George William Benfield

George William Benfield, 82, of Sophia, passed away Friday, October 12, 2012.

Kay Ann Brown

Kay Ann Brown, 69 of Sandlick, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the Raleigh Center in Daniels, following an extended illness.

Born at Pine Knob, W.Va., to the late Boyd Bonds and Mary “Ellie” Combs Bonds.

Kay was a homemaker and also graduated from Trap Hill High School Class of 1961.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death her beloved son, Gregory Allan Brown; brother, Billy Harve Bonds; sister, Stella Baldwin; grandson, Mickey Brown; and a great grandson, Hunter Deck.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Robert Edgar “Pig” Brown, at home; sons, Randall Brown and Barry Brown, both of Old Eccles Road; stepchildren, Robert “Laris” Brown and wife Shirley of Dameron, Yvonnia Griffith and husband David of Ghent, and Ryan and Keith Phipps of Sandlick; loving sisters, Brenda Brown and husband Noel Sr. of Glen Daniel, Nella Johnson and husband Charles, and Kathy Bonds, all from Richmond, Va.; loving brother, Robert “Bobby” Boyd Bonds and wife Mary Beth of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, whom were the joy of her life, Dakota Brown, Shanda Brown, Trissa Brown, Maria Brown, and Jamie Smith; four great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; special nieces, Susan “Kay” Daniel and Sandra Stanford of Glen Daniel; special nephew, Noel Brown Jr. of Crab Orchard, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and other family.

A celebration of Kay’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with her nephew, Rev. Bruce Brown, officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral chapel.

JUSTICE — Jerry Roland Cline, 62, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012.

TALBOTT, Tenn. — LaVerne Cisco Douglas, 66, a native of Mingo County, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012.

Kenneth Carl Goodson Sr.

OAK HILL — Kenneth Carl Goodson Sr., 75, of Oak Hill passed away Friday, October 5, 2012 at Bowers Hospice House.

Born May 17, 1937 at Oak Hill, the son of the late Clyde Miranda and Ella Mae Goodson.

Kenny was raised in Fayetteville, but also attended Oak Hill High School. He was a carpenter, builder and businessman owning several businesses throughout the Oak Hill and Fayetteville area. He served as member chairman of the Oak Hill zoning board. He was a member of Moose Lodge #1664 in Oak Hill, and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was of the Baptist faith.

Kenny joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country. He married the love of his life, Drema Carol Dunivant Allen, in 1981 and they shared a wonderful happy life together. Kenny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Kenny was preceded in death by a daughter Ann Saheh; grandson Seth Justus; five brothers Clyde Miranda, Jimmy Miranda, Charlie Reed, Harold Miranda, and Earl DeQuasie; and two sisters Mryna Miranda and Ruth Strote.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Drema Carol Goodson; Mary Ellison (the mother of his children); six children Teresa Lilly Peters of Beckley, Kenny Goodson, Jr. and Rachel of Fayetteville, Debbie and Sonny Craft of Oak Hill, Michael Todd Goodson and his fiancee Juanita Jones of Oak Hill, Mike and Genie Allen of Houston TX, and Fred and Judy Allen of Houston TX; 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; also his sisters and brothers Loretta Wyche of Vero Beach FL, Juanita Gillespie and Kenny of Neese SC, Carol Burgess and Junior of Grandview WV, Barbara Antill and Randy of Newon Falls OH, Joyce Kralik and Larry of West Farmington OH, Russ Miranda and Jena of Windom OH, Jim Lee and Marilyn of Medina TN, Millie Merrison and O.J. of Newton Falls OH, Linda Spain of Niles OH, Donna-Rita Brown and Bob of Oklahoma, Charles Dunivant and Denise of Glendale AZ, Bernard Dunivant of NC, and Kerry and Judy Hamel of Michigan; many nieces and nephews; and best friends Virgil and Sissy Ivy of Oak Hill, Fred Allen Senior of Texas, and Billie and Fran Popp of Tennessee.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the Staff at Bowers Hospice House for all their wonderful help with Kenny; also to Pastor Eric Smith, his wife, and all the church members for all their prayers; thanks to Sonny and Debbie Craft for all their help and prayers; to Kenny and Rachel and Reverend Barker thanks for all the prayers; and to our neighbors Nick and Carmen Deangelo thanks for all they have done for us. To the Staff of High Lawn thank you for the wonderful way you took care of us, you were caring and considerate of our feelings, and you helped us in many ways.

In keeping with Kenny’s wishes, he was cremated.

Kenny is not forgotten. He will always be in our hearts! Remember all the good thoughts! He is free from pain now and he is walking with Jesus.

A Time of Remembrance will be held 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle, 124 Oyler Avenue, Oak Hill, with Pastor Eric Smith officiating.

SWEET SPRINGS – Leonard Hamilton Howard, 74, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012.

FAYETTEVILLE — Barbara Jean Wallace Korn, 70, of Rt 1 Fayetteville, died on Thursday, October 11, 2012.

LOGAN — Mary Francis Leake (known as Mary Jo), 82, of Logan, died Friday, October 12, 2012.

Diana Ann Murphy

FAYETTEVILLE — Diana Ann Murphy, 56, of Fayetteville, danced her way to heaven on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House following a brave battle with cancer.

Born August 25, 1956 at Chillicothe,  Ohio, the daughter of the late Teddy Erskine and Eleanor (Davis) Erskine.

Diana was full of “life and love” to all of those around her. In all things, she demonstrated determination, strength, and was admired by many. She was everyone’s Mammaw. Diana and Mammaw will be sorely missed. Heaven just became sweeter to many.

Diana recently retired as a District Claims Manager with the West Virginia Insurance Commission, where she dedicated 15 years of service. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Fayetteville W.Va. Diana enjoyed dancing with her friends at the Beckley Moose Lodge where she was also a member.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Teddy and Eleanor Erskine, as well as nephew Merle Erskine.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Tracy Murphy of Charlotte NC, Stacey Brown of Oak Hill, Lee Ann and her husband Steve Elkins of Oak Hill and Chassity Young of Fayetteville W.Va. Her beloved and precious grandchildren Randy Murphy of Charlotte NC, Kyle and Kayla Hobbs of Fayetteville W.Va., Jessica Brown of Oak Hill, and Jackson Young of Fayetteville W.Va.

She is also survived by five brothers Teddy Erskine, Terry Erskine, Tommy Erskine, Timmy Erskine, and Tobby Erskine, and one sister Kathy Erskine.

Diana will be missed by those near and dear to her heart. The family would like to thank those who helped with her care during this courageous battle — her sister-in-law Kathy Murphy, her special niece Shonnet Bair, brother-in-law Timmy Murphy, David and Jordon Horrocks, Carla and Averee’ (Stinky) Torres, David, Mookie, Bo and Mike Cox, Mike and Kim Bone, her best friends Don and Linda Price and Patty Woods. A special thank you to Heather Brown and Nurse Debbie at the Bowers Hospice House of Southern West Virginia and her Prince Charming Doctor Maurice Smith at Beckley ARH and Tara Neil, RN.

Lorine Ellen Bell Young

Lorine Ellen Bell Young, age 73 of Beckley, formerly of Princewick, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born on January 9, 1939 in Woodpeck, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lewis F. Bell and Lizzie Phlegar Bell.

Lorine was a caregiver for PineLodge Nursing Home in Beckley and was of the Baptist faith. She had made her home at Princewick for most of her life.

Lorine loved crocheting, quilting, and canning.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Glen, Claude, Clifton, and Clyde Bell and a sister Lois Bell Walker.

Lorine was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her children; Lawrence L. Young and his wife Julie of White Oak, Detzel A. Young and his wife Debbie of Soak Creek, Charlene Young of Orlando, Florida, Darlene Hodges and her husband Rick of Beckley, Arlene Stewart and her husband Mark of Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina,  Belinda Sears and her husband Michael of Cool Ridge, WV, and a daughter Ann Griffith and her husband Steve of Beckley,  she was raised by Lois and Harry Walker.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Lorine Young on Sunday October 14, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Elder Willard K. Mills officiating. Burial will follow at the Thompson Cemetery at Coal City.

Friends and family visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.
