Lula A. Tyree Barr

SUMMERSVILLE — Lula A. Tyree Barr, of Summersville, passed away on June 10, 2014.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 13, 2014, in Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville. Friends may call one hour before service time at the funeral home.

Bessie Marie Bodkin

OAK HILL — Bessie Marie Bodkin, 97, of Oak Hill, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born on July 7, 1916, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Washington Richard and Minnie Alonzo Nugen Richard.

Bessie was a hard working homemaker, farmer, and loved tending to her flower gardens. She was the last survivor of her siblings.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther E. Bodkin in 1994; her infant son; four brothers, and seven sisters.

Left to cherish her memory includes her two daughters, Betty Gale Bodkin and Patricia Ann Bodkin; three sons, Thomas Edward Bodkin, Daniel Lynn Bodkin, and James Dale Bodkin; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2014, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Morris Nutter officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Broadway Avenue, Oak Hill.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral on Friday at the funeral home.

Hazel V. Forbes

MULLENS — Hazel Virginia Forbes, 89, of Mullens, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born January 18, 1925, in Herndon, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Avery Garfield and Mary Ruth (Huggins) Lipfird.

Hazel was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Mullens, volunteered as a foster grandparent, and in her earlier years was employed as a Telephone Operator.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Forbes; a son, Kenneth Forbes; a sister, Lois Irene Lane; and a brother, Billy Lipfird.

Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Lynda Wimmer and her husband, Lane of Boones Mill, Va., Jerri Massie and her husband, Jesse of Beckley, and Patsy Reed and her husband, Elza of Beckley; a special daughter-in-law, Shirley Forbes and family of Herndon; one son, Cecil Forbes and his wife, Judy of Beaver; one sister, Edna Smith of Mountain City, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to friends, Charlene Cook, Linda Maynard, Harless and Sonia Shrewsbury, and Delilah Adkins for their kindness over the years.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Roger Lee Franklin

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Roger Lee Franklin, 68, passed away last week at his home in Martinsville.

Born January 11, 1946, in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of the late George H. Franklin and Florence T.  Franklin.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert G. Franklin.

He is sadly missed by his two daughters, Rima Franklin and husband Jeff Chanat of Richmond, Virginia, and Carley Franklin Hughes and husband Jason Hughes of Beacon, New York. Roger had two adoring grandchildren: Ella and Theo, ages 5 and 6 respectively.

Roger attended the Lawrenceville School and Boston University, and worked for the U.S. Postal Service from the 1980’s until his retirement several years ago. He was devoted and loving father and an avid organic gardener who had made the move “back to the land” in the seventies. He made his home in Monroe County, West Virginia, until he moved to Martinsville in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at Wright Funeral Service, 1425 Greensboro Road, Martinsville, Va., at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 13th. The service will be followed by luncheon at the Dutch Inn in Collinsville. Interment will take place at Ewing Cemetery, Ewing Township, New Jersey.

Edward Ray Goddard

RAINELLE — Edward “Eddie Ray” Goddard, 79, of Rainelle, passed away, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

Born September 3, 1934, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Otto and Truma Fox Goddard.

Eddie was a veteran of the Korean War. He was the pastor for 11 years of the Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle, where he established Rainelle Christian Academy School in 1978. Eddie spent the last 30 years as a missionary for the Mount Pisgah Scripture Printing Ministry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore and a sister, Betty Jean Goddard.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorrine Meadows Goddard; daughter, Linda Goddard Wise and husband Dean of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; son, Jonathan Goddard and wife Lafaye of Chattanooga, Tenn.; son, Joshua Goddard of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Stacy and Ian Norkin of Tampa, Fla., Jennifer Wise, Joel Wise of Tarpons Springs, Fla. and Jalen, Jonah and Jakobe Goddard of Chattanooga, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Jackson Trembath; sister, Karen Forren of Lewisburg.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Sewell Valley Baptist Church, with Pastors Mike Whisman, Fred Fryar, Jerry Cline, J.D. Surbaugh and Bennie Kenney officiating. Pastor Yule Altizer will be arranging the music.

Friends may call Friday, June 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a celebration service at 5:30 p.m. at the church.  

The family would like to thank Kanawha Hospice Care, Greenbrier Division for their kindness during Eddie’s illness.

Essie Juanita Payne Goode

 Essie Juanita Payne Goode died on June 9th, 2014, almost 93 years old, after a long courageous battle with leukemia and other severe respiratory problems.

Essie was born on June 20th, 1921, at Mountain City, Tenn. She was the daughter of Issac “Pop” and Vada Johnson Payne. Essie’s stepmother was Cora Mae Dyson Payne.

Essie was one of a family of 17 brothers and sisters. There is one living sister, Lacie Cress of the Mt. City, Tenn. Her deceased brothers and sisters are Rod and Ralph Payne, Bertha Walker, Gertrude Ellis and Myrtle Rodriguez. There were ten half brothers and sisters. Robert, Samuel, Bill and Bud Payne, Eda Mae Payne Parson, Dorothy Payne White and Mary Payne Morton are deceased. Barbara Payne Belcher, Maggie Payne Anthony, Geraldine Payne Swift are surviving.

In 1943, Essie married Guy G. Goode at Elkton, Md. Guy would die in 1973. She was the loving mother of seven children from this marriage. Guy G. “Jerry” Goode Jr., is deceased. Those living are David P. Goode, James E. Goode, John F. Goode, S. Benita Goode, Delores A. Goode Vaughan and Vada Denise “Susie’ Goode Bowles.

Essie was the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren. They are Adam Goode, Michelle Goode, Jennifer Goode, Caitlin Goode, Lisa Goode Clark, Sashia A. Pundzak, Ashley A. Lilly Kendrix, Amber A. Lilly Holtzclaw, Michael Goode, Sarah Goode, Susan Davis, Christina Bowles and Laura Bowles.

Essie was also blessed with 15 great grandchildren, Leslie, Bentley, Mykenzee, Maddox, Maddigan, Myles, Ryan, Taylor, Noah, Alexander, Carter, Cierra, Jonathan, Serena and Markayla.

Also surviving are many wonderful neices, nephews, great neices and nephews. Among them is a special neice, Ruth Delmoro.

Essie’s professinal career began in 1941, when she served our country as a “Rosie Rivitor.” She was a detenator specialist for 3 1/2 years durning WWII in Elkton.

After her children were born, Essie became a professional day care provider in her home at 107 Vale Street here in Beckley. She continued to work until she was 75 years old.

Essie has made her home for the past 24 years with her daughter, Benita Goode on Crescent Road in Beckley.

There will be a “Service of Remembrance” on Friday, June 13th, at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley. Pastor, Dennis Epperly and Fr. Penumaka Manikyalarao will be officiating. Essie will laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m.  until the hour of the service.  

Essie will be honored and sadly missed by many, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others whom she cared for.

Randy Layton Ingram

OAK HILL — Randy Layton Ingram, 57, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, at his home.

Randy was born on March 5, 1957, in Mossy, to James Randolph Ingram Jr. and Mary Juanita Ingram Graham.

Randy was the owner/operator of River Authority Transit for 12 years, but more recently was a bus driver for the Fayette County Board of Education as well as a delivery driver for Eastern Ice. He was of the Baptist faith and will be sadly missed by a host of friends and family.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by brother, Jackie Ingram and grandparents Huey “Pappy” and Jennie Wriston and James Randolph and Virginia Ingram.

Those left to cherish his memory include wife, Georgeanna Wills Ingram, daughters, Christina Jarrell and husband, Louie, Tara Williams; sons, Jason Williams, David Ingram, Roger Ingram; grandchildren, Brandi Owens, Jacob Burdette, Jamie Jarrell, Autumn Ingram, Adam Jarrell; great-grandchild Emma Crawford; mother, Mary Juanita Graham; brothers, James Ingram, Frankie Ingram, Larry Ingram, John Peters; sister, Susan Stover and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at High Lawn Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Russell W. ‘Rusty’ Light

OAK HILL — Russell Wayne “Rusty” Light, 67, passed away, Saturday, June 7, 2014, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

Born on July 19, 1946, at Garten, he was the son of the late William Henry and Isabel Henly Light.

Rusty was a member of the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene and a member of the New River Humane Society. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War.  He was a retired Boiler operator with Elkem Metals and a part time employee at Fayetteville Wal-Mart.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Sam Light, Walter Light, Billy Light, and Guy Light; and sisters, Geneva Green and Virginia Henderson.

Left to cherish is memory include his wife, Linda Neff Light; daughter, Karrie  (Bill) Young; son, Jason (Mandi) Light; six brothers, Tom (Kathy) Light, Larry (Sharon) Light, George (Betty) Light, Jack Light, Ronnie (Pat) Light, Charles Don (Helen) Light; two sisters, Helen (Bill) Bryant and Ruth Vegg; brother-in-law, Steve Neff; sister-in-law, Pam Marks; four grandchildren, Nathan, Ashley, Tyler, and Grayson; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene, Oak Hill, with Pastor Benjamin Bleish and Dr. Randy L. James officiating. In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday before the funeral at the church.

Eva Mae Fisher Napier

LEWISBURG — Eva Mae Fisher Napier, 86, of Lewisburg, a native of Union, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Lewisburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Cromer and the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg.

Patricia Sue Oaks

Patricia Sue Oaks, 71, of Beckley, passed away at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital on Monday, June 9, 2014.

Born on May 21, 1943, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late George M. Coalson and Eunice Lucille Linkous Coalson.

She was former co-owner and operator of the Pets-N-Things pet shop in Beckley, and attended the Beckley Church of God.

Mrs. Oaks lived most of her life in Beckley.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 52 years, Rev. James L. Oaks, her son, James M. Oaks and his wife Melissa of Beckley, granddaughter, Abigail, the love of her life, her loving brother, George Coalson and his wife Phyllis of Hoffman Estates, Ill. Four nephews and their families, several brothers-in- law, sisters-in-law, and many cousins and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 11 a.m., with Bishop F.D. Sexton officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Chad Carden, Robert Hinkle, Mike Blair, Tyler Carden, Mike Naylor, and Mitch Corey.

Hannah Marie Radcliffe

“Hannah Marie, Sweet As Can Be.” Hannah Marie Radcliffe, two-year old infant daughter of Joshua and Amber Kyzer Radcliffe of Shady Spring, departed this life to be safe in the arms of angels on Saturday June 7, 2014, in Clearwater, Fla.

Hannah was preceded in death by her great grandparents, Rev. Virgil and Alma Radcliffe, and Ray Kyzer.

Hannah was born on June 19, 2011, in Beckley. Other than her parents, Hannah is survived by her beautiful sister, Tzipporah Radcliffe, who will blossom into maturation. She resides with her mommy and daddy at home. Her paternal grandparents, Mark and Angela Morgan Radcliffe of Shady Spring; maternal grandparents, Matt and Cindy Rupani Kyzer of Clearwater, Fla.

Great-grandparents, Bill and Judy Morgan of Shady Spring, and Patricia Kyzer of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Carl Rupani of Mt. Airy, Md., and Sandra Borsos of Atlasburg, PA. and great-great grandparents, Harold and Violet Zweifel of Columbus, Ohio.

Aunts and uncles, Alexandra and Sarah Kyzer, both of Clearwater, Fla.; Seth Radcliffe, Bethany DeGrave and her husband EliYaHu and their children, EliYaHu, EberYaHu, and YeshaYaHu; Caleb Radcliffe, Isaac Radcliffe, and Judah Radcliffe, all of Shady Spring.

BROAD RUN, Va. — Jennings Edward Wood, of Broad Run a native of Braxton County, W.Va., passed away June 6, 2014.
