BECKLEY — Palmer Blair

KOPPERSTON— Palmer Blair, 81, went home in the arms of Jesus Monday, October 25, 2010, from Logan Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born August 19, 1929, at Johnson County, Kentucky, a son of the late Ross and Minnie Octavia Honaker Blair.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer, Lamar, Dexter, Willard, and Tildon Blair; one sister, Rouie Faye Lucas; one son, Teddy Rakes; and one stepson, Timothy Brewer; second wife Mildred Rae Pridemore Blair.

Palmer was a member of Bible Baptist Church at Kopperson, where he also served as trustee and was known as Papaw to all the church. He a was retired coal miner and a member of UMWA. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 14 years, Alma Jean Spaulding Blair of Kopperston; his first wife Betty Curry of West Hamlim; three sons, Palmer David (Imogene) Blair of Neibert, Jackie Ray (Penny) Blair of Monaville, and Darrell Gene (Patty) Blair of Accoville; five daughters, Brenda Gail Rowe of Ravenna, Ohio, Christina Lea (Jimmy) Dorton of Roseboro, N.C., Ernestine (Randall) Steele of Hanover, Delana Kay (Mike) Wingler of Accoville and Leona (Ed) Blair of Man; two step sons, James Carlos Brewer of Crum and Dale Brewer of Kopperston, two step daughters, Regina (Richard) Tilley of Lynco and Tracy (Ricky) Lewis of Hampton, Va.;  two brothers, Dallas Blair of Ill. and Ted Blair of Danville, Va.; one sister, Bobbie Jean Scites of Woodbridge, Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2010 at Bible Baptist Church at Kopperston with the Rev. Earl Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.

Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the church and one hour prior to services. Pall bearers will be family and friends.

RICH CREEK, Va.— Dillie Ellen Thornton Blankenship, 91, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010.

Graveside Services and burial will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, in the Elgood Cemetery.

PICKAWAY—Gary Leon Bostic, 55, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at home after a long illness.

 Evelyn Cox Chappo, 82, of Beaver, passed away Monday, Oct. 25, 2010. Services will be held at the Beaver United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. Private graveside rites will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

SUMMERSVILLE — Agatha Pearl Crookshanks, 81, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at her home.

Services will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010, in the White Funeral Home, Summersville, with Pastor Jim Brown officiating.

In keeping with her wishes the body was cremated.

FAYETTEVILLE — Gladys Jones, 91, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010.

Mary M. Nichols, 67, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 at Raleigh General Hospital.

SUMMERSVILLE — Melda Mae Riddle, 84, died Monday Oct. 25, 2010, at her home. Funeral services will be Friday Oct. 29, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville.

Raymond Jay Shuck

Raymond Jay (RJ) Shuck, of Coal City and Lester, passed away and is now with the Lord after a sudden illness at Raleigh General Hospital on Friday morning October 22, 2010. He was 24 years of age.

R.J. was born November 11, 1985, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley. He was the son of Raymond W. Shuck of Coal City and Kimberley D. Shumate Graham and husband William of Lester, WV.

R.J. was a certified master plumber and was employed by Modley’s Plumbing & Heating in Beckley.

R.J. was preceded in death by both of his grandmothers Frances L. Cadle Shuck and Shirley J. Nichols Shumate and his beloved uncle Ronnie Dale Shuck.

Survivors include his grandfather Melvyn Shumate of Sophia, loving brothers Ronnie Ray Shuck of Lester and Coal City, Scott Shuck and wife Angie of Jefferson, Ga., Jeff Shuck and wife Teresa of Loganville, Ga. and Melvyn E. Graham of Lester, two loving sisters Shirley C. Lane and Jessica Graham of Lester. Great aunts Patsy Sears of Coal City and Sheila Shumate of Arizona, Great uncles Joel Shumate of Shady Spring, Jim Shumate of Akron, Oh., Berry Shumate of N.C. and Jackie Shuck of Coal City. Four loving aunts Teresa Hart and husband Mike of Forest Hill, Michelle Hart and husband Randy of Yorktown, Va., Diana Shuck and Lisa Shuck Vance of Coal City, and uncle Ricky Shuck of Stafford, Va.

Cousins he dearly cherished Jeremy D. Shuck of Beckley, Angel Copeland of Bethlehem, Ga., “LiL’ Billy Farrish and wife Samantha, Trina Farris, Carli “Lil Sis” Shuck Vance of Coal City, Jason, Sarah, Hannah Hart of Forest Hill, Olivia Morgan, Faith Hart of Yorktown, Va. and “Lil” Rick Shuck of Stafford Va.

Nieces and nephews Arianna, Alecia, Ian Copeland of Bethlehem, Ga., Brittany, Courtney Shuck of Laganville, Ga., and Jordan, Jaylin Shuck of Jefferson, Ga.

His loving friends who were like family to him Robert ‘Bob’ Modley of Beckley, Scott Stephens of Fitzpatrick, Carl Hogston of Midway, Kevin Williams of Lester and Lee Cozort of Crab Orchard.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday October 28, 2010 in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow in the Shumate Cemetery at Hoo Hoo Hollow in Lester.

Janice Swimm

Janice Swimm, 79, of Pineville, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Wyoming Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, New Richmond.

Born Dec. 7, 1930, at Twin Branch, she was the daughter of the late Kathleen Fleenor and was raised by her grandparents, the late Sink and Annie Mounts.

Janice was an active member of the Pineville Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed reading her Bible, was an accomplished seamstress and cherished and enjoyed her extended Bowman’s Bottom family.

In addition to her mother and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Howard Blake Swimm; three infant daughters, Mildred Ann, Vickie Lynn and Peggy Sue Swimm; two sisters, Margaret Moore and Lucille Smith; a brother, Raymond Mounts; and mother-and father-in-law, Aubrey and Versa Swimm.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Lou Cook and her husband, Larry Vaughn Cook, of Pineville and Rhonda Loving and her husband, Howard L. Loving II, of Pineville; six grandchildren, Christopher Scott Cook, Lori Anne Payne, Rebecca Dare Blaine and her husband, David, Howard Lacy Loving III, Norman Wyatt Loving II and his wife, Nikole, and Clayton Vaughn Cook; ten great-grandchildren, Tyler and Anthony Cook, Kaden Loving, Daryan Thompson, Blase and Steele Payne, Adam, Carly and Brian Blaine, and Malorie Lusk; a brother, Howard Mounts and his wife Gladys; sisters-in-law, Helen Gillespie and Sandra Parker; brothers-in-law, Eugene “Bosco” Swimm and his wife, Margarette, and Ronald Parker; nieces, Debbie Marsh, Cheryl Willis, Tinna Bauer and Kay Gillespie; and cousins, Steve and Lou Moore, Brenda Witherspoon, Sue Ellen Sizemore and Patti Westerfield.

A special thank you to the staff of Wyoming Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for their care.

A celebration of Janice’s life will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at the Pineville Presbyterian Church with Minister Steve Acord officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, and Terry Acord and Mike Lynch.

Family will receive friends Thursday from noon until time of service at the church.

BALLARD— Charlene Faye Vaughn, 43, formerly of Pads Fork, passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at her home.

Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va.
