Betty Jean Bennett Denton
Betty Jean Bennett Denton, 76, of Oak Hill, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at CAMC - General Division in Charleston.
Born April 12, 1937, at Cunard, she was the daughter of the late Basil and Dimmie Simmons Bennett.
Mrs. Denton was a retired textile mill office secretary having worked in California.
She was a member of the Catholic faith.
Her husband, Forrest Denton preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Kevin Zamiela and wife, Ellen of Dunbar; a sister Klyde Merrell of California and a brother, James “Wetzel” Bennett of Sissonville.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Carlos Melocoton, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Elizabeth Virginia Donelson, 86, of Nettie, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, in the Ward Road Freewill Baptist Church at Nettie with Pastors Tim Scott and Ed Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Ward Road Cemetery at Nettie.

Jesse Willard Hatfield
Jesse Willard Hatfield, age 97, went to be with his Lord Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at Hospice House of Citrus County on the Nature Coast, Beverly Hills, Fla., following a long illness.
He was a native West Virginian, retiring to Florida over 30 years ago. He resided in New Smyrna Beach for many years where he was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He later moved to Beverly Hills, Fla., where he has made his home with daughter Jessie Fay and husband John Lowe for the past nine years.
Mr. Hatfield had a long career in the coal mining industry retiring in January, 1976. He was assistant Inspector-at-Large for the New River-Winding Gulf Division of the West Virginia Department of Mines, serving 20 under four governors.
He received the designation of “Distinguished West Virginian” by Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr., in recognition of his meritorious service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, NO. 138, Pineville, for over 61 years.
He was the youngest of 12 children, born April 12, 1916, in Pea Ridge, to Newman Pomp and Ella Ferrell Hatfield. Mr. Hatfield’s childhood and young adult years were spent in Man, where he met and married Edith Fay Mahone. Together they had three children.
He is preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters, three brothers, first wife of 46 years, Edith Fay Mahone Hatfield, second wife of 23 years Opha Pauline Brown Eller Hatfield, and son Rondal Willard Hatfield.
He is survived by daughters Doris Evelyn Hughes and husband Donald of Corinne, and Jessie Fay Lowe and husband John of Beverly Hills, Fla.; daughter-in-law Joan Hatfield of Midway; step-daughter, Brenda Eller James of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; step-sons, Frank Eller and wife Donna of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and Ross Eller and wife Karen, Glades Springs; six grandchildren, Deloris Reed and husband John, Michelle Keen and husband Tim, Winter Haven, Fla., Ronald Lee Hatfield and wife Debbie, Gaston, S.C., Jerry Wayne Hatfield and wife Kim, Wilmington, S.C., Kevin Brian Lowe, Sanford, Fla., Kara Clark and husband Mark, Orlando, Fla.; three step-granddaughters; one step-grandson; 11 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hatfield was a man of great integrity and humility. He was well known for his sense of humor and desire to make others laugh. He will remain beloved in the hearts of all who knew him and will be remembered as a proud WV Mountaineer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Hospice House of Citrus County on the Nature Coast. Graveside services will be held at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley, WV, Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at 4 p.m.

Phyllis Jean Howerton, 67, of Sophia, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 following a long illness.

Irene Lafferty, 74, of Bassett, Va., formerly of Ravencliff, passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2013.
Born April 1, 1939, at Bolt, she was a daughter of the late Arlie Ellis Gunnoe and the late Sarah Margaret Gunnoe.
Irene loved working crossword puzzles, playing cards and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Laffferty; a brother, Delmer Gunnoe formerly of Bolt; two sisters, Ruby Combs formerly of Glen Daniel and Thelma Simerly formerly of Glossner, Ohio.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Roy Lee Lafferty of Bassett, Va.; three brothers, Kermit Gunnoe of Eccles and Don Gunnoe of Eccles, Arthur Ellis “Cracker” Gunnoe of Eccles; and two sisters, Shirley Cox of Eccles and Pauline Collins of Ohio.
Committal services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Chapel of Peace with entombment to follow. Pastor Dewayne Hurd will be officiating.

Arthur ‘Buddy’ Marcum Jr.
It is with great sadness that we the family of Arthur Marcum, Jr. announce his passing.
Our “Buddy,” as he was affectionately known, left for “Biker’s Heaven” on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at his home in MacArthur, surrounded by family and friends that loved him so.
Born on Jan. 2, 1951, Buddy was six days shy of his 63rd birthday. Buddy had battled cancer privately for a very short time. He was seen out and about just days before his short illness.
He was the son of the late Arthur and Esther Zippith Marcum Sr. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene and a sister, Kimberley Tolliver.
A retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA, Buddy was an AVID motorcycle rider. A member of the Beckley Moose Lodge 1606, he was also a member of the “Inner Circle” at Jimmies’ Place (where all GOOD PEOPLE are a member of the Inner Circle.) He will be sadly missed by all his friends. In these later years of his life, Buddy has immensely enjoyed taking his grandson, Lyric, fishing and loving on his granddaughter, Ezra.
In addition to his beloved grandchildren, Buddy leaves to cherish his memory, his only child and mother of his grandchildren, Tiffany Bauguess and her husband, Michael; he was the fond brother of Dinah Lilly, Anita Canaday, Delessa Lytle, Lyle Marcum, and Joyceann Davidson. His good friend, Teresa Brown, survives as well. It is all just too soon, but we his family must let him go. God speed until we are all together again.
On Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. we shall remember Buddy with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour at 1 p.m.
Buddy’s close friends will be officiating at his service. He will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park. The honor of carrying Buddy has been given to Woody Pegram, Bill Shumate, Mike Black, Dick Carpender, Todd “Turtle” Kelly, Tim “Chewy” Chewning, David Heaton, and Al Sines. Christian Burks is an honorary pallbearer.
Following Buddy’s burial, there will be a repast at Jimmies’ Place, 727 South Kanawha Street, Beckley. A time of celebration, food and remembering will be had by all. Dress casually for the funeral. If the weather is good, ride your motorcycle!
And now we must say goodbye. To Buddy, short on years, long on life; a free spirit, who lived to love the simple things, trails, streams and sunsets. May you rest in peace.

Edna Lou Myles
Edna Lou Myles, age 79, of Daniels, passed away at the Raleigh Center in Daniels on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.
Born Dec. 12, 1934, in Daniels, she was the daughter of the late Phillip Lester and Elizabeth Basham Lester.
Mrs. Myles was a homemaker, and attended the Grace Gospel Church. She had made Daniels her home for most of her life.
Mrs. Myles was preceded in death by her husband, Harold K. Myles.
Survivors include her children, Harold Dean Myles and his wife Lois of Daniels, and April Sue Lesher and her husband Kevin of Beckley; two sisters, Dorothy Massie of Daniels, and Frances Chapman and her husband Jackie of Cool Ridge; three grandchildren, Jamie Sue Martin and her husband Scott, Kimberly James Stafford and her husband Christian, and Lily Myles; a great-grandchild, Colton Martin, a special friend Marybeth Chapman of Cool Ridge.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 1 p.m. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.

Robert C. Ripley, Sr.
Robert (Bob) C. Ripley Sr. , 89, of Rainelle, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, with his sons, Carl and David, as well as Dr. Haven N. Wall, Jr., M.D. by his side.
Born September 14, 1924, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late John and Ruth Carr Ripley.
Bob was preceded in death by his lovely wife of 61 years, Mary Frances Whitlock Ripley, June 5, 2009; 2 brothers Fred Ripley, September 28, 1996, and John Stuart Ripley, January 13, 2011; and one brother-in-law Merrill Whitlock, September 7, 1997.
An active member of the Rainelle United Methodist Church since 1956 until his mobility declined last year. Bob sang in the choir and was active in a variety of other capacities including serving as treasurer of the Trustee Committee for over 50 years. From 1943 through 1952, Bob worked at Johnstown Coal and Coke, Belburn and the Burnrite Coal Company. In 1953, he became a salesman at Deligne Ford and Mercury in Ansted. In 1956, he went back to work at Johnstown Coal and Coke at the No. 4 mine at Panther Creek. In 1958, he joined Dodson-Hager Ford at Rupert and was sales manager through 1963 through 1990.
Bob was one of the original directors at First State Bank and Trust of Rainelle, now City National Bank, for 25 years where he served as chairman of the board for a number of years. As a civic minded person, he was active on the Rainelle Town Council for years as well as serving on the Greenbrier County Planning Commission.
A few weeks ago in early December, Bob was recognized and honored in receiving a 45 year member pin for his dedication and work with the Rainelle Lion’s Club. He was also a 48 year member of the Midland Trail Masonic Lodge, #166.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and uncle. He cherished spending time with family and friends.
Bob is survived by two sons Robert Carl Ripley, Jr. of Arlington, Virginia and David Ripley and wife Beth of Fredericksburg, Virginia; 2 granddaughters Kristin Grigonis and husband Brandon of Gloucester, Virginia and Kaitlyn Ripley and fiance Eric Rehbein of Fredericksburg, Virginia; 1 great-granddaughter Arber Grigonis of Gloucester, VA; 2 brothers Jim Ripley (Padi) of Austin, Texas and Sam Ripley (Marlene) of Rainelle; 6 sisters Betty Blackburn of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Helen Hanson of Rainelle, Peggy Barker of New Orleans, LA, Phyllis Cool (Keith) of Ripley, Shirley Osborne (Charles) of Tampa. FL and Vivian Lusher of Rainelle; 1 sister-in-law Mary Ray Whitlock of Cornstalk; and a host of nieces, nephews, other fond relatives and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014, in the Rainelle United Methodist Church with Pastor Sam Groves officiating, assisted by Rev. Ron McCauley. Entombment will be in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville.
Friends may call Friday, January 3, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc. and one before the service on Saturday at the church.

John “Johnny, Jo-Jo” Dale White, 62, of Princeton died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at Princeton Community Hospital following a short illness.
Born Nov. 18, 1951 in Princeton, he was the son of the late John J. White and Ruby Eastburn White.
Johnny was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend who will greatly missed by all fortunate enough to have known him. He was a former coal miner who felt most at home on a coal loader. He worked for Peabody Coal Company and Bluestone Coal Corporation and dedicated the majority of his life to the UMWA and loved every minute.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years Juanita French White and an infant daughter, Leslie Adrian White and fiancée, Rita Walker.
Left to cherish his memory include his children, Laura Ashley White Nelson and husband Jason of Beckley, John Aubrey White and wife Lindsay-Ream White of Twilight, and Samantha Grace White of Princeton and her boyfriend, Kenny Williams of Wolf Creek, Va.; the one who held the key to his heart, his granddaughter, Leah Adrian Nelson; siblings, Jimmy White, Sara Burton and husband Tommy of Princeton, Debbie Belcher and husband Allen of Rocky Mount, Va. and his dearest friends, Roger and Reba Wright of Princeton.

Born Sept. 6, 1936, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Mildred Wagal Feazell.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, E.B. “Monk” Wood Jr. on Jan. 30, 1992; and a brother, Ray Feazell.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Thomas Wood and wife Vera of Harkers Island, N.C. and David Wood and wife Kate of Morehead City, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Frank Wood and Katie Wood of Harkers Island, N.C., and Laynie Cromwell of Morehead City, N.C.
