Richard Cecil ‘Dick’ Vaughn

NIMITZ — Richard Cecil (Dick) Vaughn, 89, of Nimitz, went home to his Heavenly Father on December 13, 2013.

Born in Otsego, W.Va. on January 17, 1924, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II at age 17 where he became a tail gunner on a bomber in the European theater of operations. Richard survived one of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the Army Air Corps at that time, completing 50 missions before returning stateside.

He met and married Yvonne Marcella Thery in May, 1944 while on temporary duty assignment in Illinois. Yvonne and their baby, Margaret Rose, tragically died in childbirth, leaving him a widower at age 22.

After completing his overseas tour, he returned to the U.S. where he continued to move up the ranks, becoming a Master Sergeant and charter member of the newly renamed US Air Force. Richard was assigned to his home state of West Virginia, and served as a recruiter in Hinton. It was there that he met the beautiful Virginia Lee Fix, who was to become his wife of 44 years before she passed away in 1996. Virginia brought to the marriage her three daughters, Rebecca (Becky), Catherine (Kitty), and Andria (Andi). She and Richard added another three daughters, Teresa (Teri), Cynthia (Cindy), and Tamara (Tami) to the family.

Richard attended Officer Candidate School in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he received his commission. He served in a number of interesting positions in military intelligence including a stint with the famous “Operation Blue Book” before being assigned to Strategic Air Command Headquarters in Bellevue, NE where he completed his twenty-two years of distinguished service. During many years in the military, his daughters have fond memories of traveling all over the U.S. and Newfoundland.  Six daughters crammed into a wood-paneled station wagon with overnights in national parks across the country provided hours of comic relief and joy. From losing the tent stakes (and carving new ones out of branches) in Dunes State Park (IN) where he set up camp only to discover that his family of six daughters were in the middle of the Boy Scout Jamboree, to Virginia almost setting the woods on fire in Squaw Valley National Park (CA) with pitch pine on the fire pit.

He retired as an Air Force Major in 1966 to be closer to his and Virginia’s parents in Forest Hill, WV. Richard purchased a home Nimitz, where he first worked for the employment service in Beckley and later led the creation of the Jumping Branch Public Service District, which provided the first centralized system of water.  He was a volunteer plant operator for the system for several years. He also served as President of Summers County Board of Health.

Richard was very active in the Nimitz Missionary Baptist Church, serving as Treasurer and a devoted attendee of Sunday and Wednesday services.  Richard was a self-made man and a credit to his community. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow into adulthood, and his guidance and humor will be greatly missed by all of them. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, and golf. He particularly enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team - the Atlanta Braves.

Richard was a talented guitarist, spending a great amount of time entertaining friends and family, and passing along his love of music and skill as a guitarist to his family. He painted exceptional nature scenes, was an accomplished upholsterer, and wrote short stories and poetry.

Left to cherish his memory are his six daughters, Rebecca Huffman and husband L.J. Huffman of Salem, Va., Catherine Coleman and husband Joseph Coleman of Roanoke, Va., Andria Adkins of Forest Hill, W.Va., Teri Clark and companion John of Hinton, W.Va., Cynthia Vaughn of Nimitz and Tamara Nutter and her husband Raymond Nutter of St. Augustine, Fla.

Richard’s 17 grandchildren include: Lori Morita (Kauai, HI); Bret Huffman (Kauai, HI); Kerry Yeatts and husband Toby (Roanoke, VA); Brian Coleman and wife Dawn (Aurora, CO);  Patrick J. Coleman (Austin, TX); Hilary Gidelson and husband Jason (Trooper, PA); Adam Adkins (Hinton, WV); Emily Adkins (Forest Hill, WV); Chris Hatcher (Hinton, WV); Ginny Hatcher and husband Bryan Coulter  (Hinton, WV); Noah Clark (Hinton, WV); Colin Vaughn (Nimitz, WV); Tyson Willey and wife Crista (Longwood, FL); Chase Willey and partner Steve Peters (Charleston, WV) Hawken Nutter and Gavin Nutter, St. Augustine, FL. His 12 great-grandchildren include:  Lilli Morita (Kauai, HI); China Huffman (Kauai, HI); Owen Coleman (Aurora, CO); Grace Coleman (Aurora, CO); Ashlee Yeatts (Roanoke, VA);  Benjamin Gidelson (Trooper, PA); Oliver Gidelson (Trooper, PA); Lexy Meadows (Hinton, WV); River Hatcher (Hinton, WV); Alesia Clark (Hinton, WV); Vaughn Willey (Longwood, FL) and Ty Willey (Longwood, FL).

In addition to Yvonne and Virginia, Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Gideon and Rosa Vaughn, brothers Roy Vaughn, Elmer Vaughn, Buford Vaughn and Raymond Vaughn, and beloved grandson Jason Adkins.

He is survived by his brothers Clarence Vaughn, Dillard Vaughn, Clyde Vaughn, and Carlos Vaughn and his sisters Shirley Lilly and Audrey Edwards.

The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton.
