Barbara Bennett

Barbara Bennett, 79, of Coal City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Matthew Allan Blair

DANESE — Matthew Allan Blair, 26, of Critchley Lane in Danese, West Virginia, passed away Monday evening, November 26, 2012, at his residence in Danese. He had formerly lived in Kent, Ohio, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Born April 28, 1986, at Beckley, WV, he was the son of Karen Critchley Blair Smith of Pulaski, VA, and his father, Jerry Randall Blair of Edmond, WV. He was preceded in death by his maternal Grandparents, Cecil and Gussie Blair, and his great-grandparents, Elsie Smith, and Buzz and Mary Critchley, and his stepfather, David Glen Smith.

Survivors include his mother, Karen Critchley Blair Smith of Pulaski, VA; his father, Jerry Randall Blair of Edmond, WV. He was also loved by his very good friend, Jenny Gunnoe; 2 brothers, John Randall Blair and David Cook, both of Pulaski, Virginia; Grandparents, John and Hilda Critchley of Danese; Uncles, Steve Critchley of Lakewood, Ohio, Tony and Nikki Critchley of Danese, WV, Robert and Tressa Critchley of Danese.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Floyd D. Bolen officiating. Burial will follow at the family cemetery. RAVENCLIFF — Betty Bowman, 66, of Ravencliff, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with the Rev. Ernest Francis officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Pretty Ridge Cemetery, Saulsville. Friends may gather with the family from noon until service time at the funeral home.

MOUNT LOOKOUT — Gladys K. Hypes, 65, of Mount Lookout, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery of Mount Lookout with Pastor Mark Hornish officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the church.

Cooper Anthony Joynes

CHARLESTON — Beloved baby boy Cooper Anthony Joynes, of Charleston, W.Va., was born on May 16, 2012, and departed this life on Nov. 28, 2012, in Morgantown, W.Va. He is survived by his adoring mother Gina (Long) Joynes, originally of Jeannette, Pa., father Dustin Joynes, originally of Mullens, W.Va., and brother Grant Joynes. The family lives in Charleston, W.Va.

He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Paula (Spino) Long, both of Jeannette, Pa.; his maternal great-grandmother, Charlotte Spino, of Latrobe, Pa.; his paternal grandparents, Joyce Chapman and Douglas Taylor of Bud, W.Va.; and Clarence “Butch” Joynes of Mullens, W.Va.

Additional relatives include his paternal aunt and uncle, Amanda and Tommy Wikel, and cousins Kody, Lexie and Thomas Wikel of Poca, W.Va.; his maternal aunt and Godmother, Marisa Long McKenney, and uncle, Matthew McKenney, of Washington, D.C.; and his maternal uncle and Godfather, Angelo Long, of Jeannette, Pa.

Cooper gave a lifetime of love in his short time on earth. A private family service took place at John V. Graziano Funeral Home in Jeannette, Pa. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Cooper Anthony Joynes may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Morgantown (841 Country Club Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505) or West Virginia University Children’s Hospital Child Life Program (P.O. Verna L. Lambert

PINEVILLE — Verna L. Lambert, 81, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012.

Lila (Lotus) Lewis

Lila “Lotus” Lewis 84, of Princewick went to be with her Lord, and to be reunited with her husband on Saturday, December 1, 2012, following a sudden illness.

Lotus was the daughter of the late Avery and Edrie Farley.

Lotus loved the Lord, and through her giving ways she showed that love through her generosity, and giving to others.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Harlen “H.B.” Lewis. Her grandson Lee Hudson, four brothers Oral, Ted, Darrel, and Kent Farley. Two sisters, Edna Dennis, and Delpha Martin.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Sheryl Carroll and husband Richard of South Carolina, her son Kevin Lewis of Arizona. Four Grandsons Kevin Lee, Phillip, Jason, and Andrew of Arizona, Three brothers Jack Farley, Bill Farley, and Frank Farley, Two sisters Earlene Hunt, and Leta McComas. Two very special nieces Kaye Roles, and Dyann Hatcher, A very special friend Charles Jarrell whom she loved like a brother, two special little helpers D’Ante and Faith Mayo, and a host of nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Coal City cemetery, where Lotus will be laid to rest next to her husband. Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of Flowers donations can be made in Lotus’s memory to Hospice of Southern West Virginia c/o the Bowers Hospice House who gave her husband such good care during his illness; she was always grateful for the care he received.

Ovid V. McMillion Jr.

RENICK — Ovid V. McMillion Jr., 82, of Renick died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg with burial in Morningside Cemetery at Renick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the funeral home.

David A. Michael

PRINCETON — David A. Michael, 64, of Princeton, ended his 15-year battle with cancer on Saturday, December 1, 2012. Ultimately the victory was David’s and a peaceful place at the side of the throne is his reward.

Born May 19, 1948, at Covel, he was the son of the late Rayburn Dailey Michael and Deulah B. Lewis Michael.

Mr. Michael was a 1968 graduate of Herndon High School. He was a tipple welder and mechanic at Herndon and was a member of the UMWA since 1969. He was of the Baptist faith, was an avid WVU fan and loved cooking a big pot of spagotts. His serenity came from spending time at the beach with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, David A. “Crockett” Michael, II, in 2006; two sisters, Lola Bailey and Billie Christian; and one brother, Harold D. Michael.

Among those left to carry on his memory are his wife of 42 years, Patricia Ratcliff Michael; one son, Robert Ryan Michael and his wife Tiffany, and two grandsons, Connor David Michael and Declan Reid Michael all of Louisa, VA; special nieces and nephews, Candida Smith of Rural Retreat, VA, Lola Ray Marsh and Billy Michael both of Mullens and Toni Michael and Wayne Michael both of NC; and several special grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Roger Lusk officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Close friends will serve as pallbearers.

Steven Andrew O’Dell

MOUNT NEBO — Steven Andrew O’Dell, 27, of Mt. Nebo, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, due to injuries sustained in a mining accident at Anjean.

Born April 30, 1985, in Charleston, he was the son of Brian Edward O’Dell of Green Valley and Valerie Michelle Arbogast Comer, of Summersville.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Andrew “Butch” O’Dell and great-grandfather Edward O’Dell.

Steven was an electrician for Alpha Mining Co., he was a member of the Mt. Urim Baptist Church of Green Valley, and had served in Iraq with the National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Caitlin Nicole McFerrin O’Dell; paternal grandmother, Peggy O’Dell of Green Valley, and great-grandmother Leda O’Dell of Green Valley, maternal grandparents Gene and Renona Arbogast of Nettie; two sisters, Cari Elizabeth Harper and husband, Douglas, of Green Valley and Britteny Danielle Taylor of Craigsville; and a nephew, Easton Brody Harper, and other extended family members Michael, Shannon, Sharon, Kenny, Shari, Robin, Maynard, Amanda, April, Callie and several other aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

A private funeral and entombment will be held at a later date.

SAULSVILLE — Steven Owens, 55, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012.

Sharon Smith

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Sharon Hendrick Church Smith, 59, of Jacksonville, NC, went to be with the Lord, Friday, November 30, 2012, at her home.

Born December 1, 1952, in Glen White, WV, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Athnel Hendrick.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She is a member of the Freedom Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at Freedom Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church, Blue Creek Road, Jacksonville, with Reverend Ernest King officiating.

Survivors include her husband of 12 years, Randall Smith of Jacksonville; two sons, Jackson Smith of Jacksonville and Matthew Church and wife Sheri of Kernersville, NC; grandson, Carson Church of Kernersville; sister, Karen Kells and husband Jack of Edgewood, KY; nephew, Brian Sturgill and wife Vanessa of Erlanger, KY; great-nephews, Tanner and Tucker Sturgill of Erlanger, KY; and several aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Maxine Burleson Tolbert

COTTAGEVILLE — Maxine Burleson Tolbert, 81, of the Evergreen Hills community, Cottageville, WV, departed this life November 30, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House West, South Charleston, WV.

She was born April 11, 1931, in Midway, WV, a daughter of the late John Husty and Gertrude Mae (Stover) Burleson. Her husband of 56 years, Richard B. Tolbert; brothers, Hugh Burleson, Charlie Burleson, and Basil Burleson; sisters, Myrtle Burleson, Mary Poe, Nora Noonkester, and Lucy Pitsenbarger, and son-in-law, Eugene Harmon, also preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and member of the Ripley Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and making quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda (Tom) Grimm of Mason, Kim (Alan) Staats of Ripley, and Karen Harmon of Evans; sisters, Wanda Green of Beckley, and Shirley Stone of Crab Orchard; grandchildren, Michelle Harris, Lorie Grimm, Stephen Taylor, Jeremy Taylor, Michael Harmon, Chad Harmon, and Andy Grimm; great-grandchildren, Brandon Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Kyle Taylor, Olivia Harris, Kaylin Taylor, Lexi Taylor, and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at the Ripley Church of Christ, 112 Jackson Avenue, Ripley, WV, with ministers Clifton McLawhorn and Brent Dewees officiating. Burial will follow in Blaine Memorial Cemetery, Cottageville, WV.

Thomas A. Wilson

Thomas Arthur Wilson, 80, of Besoco passed away on Friday, November 30, 2012, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born March 25, 1932, at Mead, he was the son of the late Arlie Don and Mary Elizabeth (Stanton) Wilson.

Thomas attended the Grassy Banks Freewill Baptist Church and a former coal miner retiring after 20 years of service. In his leisure he enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by two brothers, Arlie Gene Wilson and James Fred Wilson; and one sister, Frances Mae Underwood.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Wanda Adkins Wilson; three daughters, Mary Azmon and her husband, James, of Mocksville, NC, Patricia Hart and her companion, Jackie Sargent, of Rhodell, and Rita Shrewsbury and her husband, Pettie, of Rhodell; seven sons, Thomas Wilson, Jr., and his wife, Beulah, of Harmony, NC, Danny Wilson and his wife, Mary, of Navarre, FL, Donald Wilson and his companion, Sharlene Furguson, of Odd, Fred Wilson of Mocksville, NC, Woodrow Wilson and his wife, Sherri, of Josephine, William Wilson and his wife, Marla, of Amigo, and Jerry Wilson and his wife, Maria, of Mocksville, NC; twenty-two grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at the Wilson Family Cemetery, Besoco, with Rev. Charlie Bolen officiating.

Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery, which is on the property of Thomas Wilson at Besoco.
