Barbara Bennett

Barbara Bennett, 73, of Coal City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Meredith Keith Blevins

CLAYTON — Meredith Keith Blevins, 74, of Clayton, formerly of Tonawanda, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Roger Persinger officiating. Burial will follow at the Blevins Family Cemetery, Clayton. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the funeral home.

Bobby Ray ‘Buck’ Buckland

Bobby Ray “Buck” Buckland, 78, of Shady Spring, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer with his family by his side.

Bobby was born in Pemberton, W.Va., on Sept. 17, 1934, to the late Kermit Buckland and Mollie Loyd Buckland.

After completing his GED, he then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served in the Vietnam War and then retired after 22 years of service. He then came home to West Virginia, where he worked a short while for Sparks TV and Appliance and Eastern Coal Company’s Affinity Mine.

Bobby then started his own business, Bucks Appliance Service, which he operated for many years. Later in life he went to work for National TV and Appliance as the warehouse manager through June of this year.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Billie, Gene and Jerry Buckland, and two sisters, Katherine and Rebecca Buckland.

Those survivors left to cherish his memories are his three children: Bobby Buckland of Shady Spring, Colleen Buckland of White Oak, and Lou Ann Cook and her husband, Bob Cook, of Beckley; former wife and mother of his children, Ellen Buckland of White Oak; his four grandchildren, Nicholas Buckland of Dublin, Ohio, Patrick Buckland and wife, Sarah, of Pennacle, N.C., Travis Buckland of Fall River, Mass., and Leslie Cook of Beckley; one great-grandson, Patrick Buckland Jr.; his four sisters: Faye Ames of Golden, Colo., Patsi Trail of Lexington, S.C., Linda Moran of Beckley, and Nancy Benge of Beckley; a brother, Jackie Buckland and wife, Barbara, of Waynesville, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Betty Buckland of Crab Orchard, and Lillian Buckland of Midway. Also very dear to his heart were his many nieces and nephews and close friends and family.

In keeping with his wishes he has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at Bible Baptist Church in MacArthur, in which he had been attending with his family. Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Wayne Holder and Pastor Thomas Sheppard officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m., in which services will follow after.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Bible Baptist Church — Bible Printing Ministry Christmas Offering in his memory. You can send donations to P.O. Box 1433, Beckley, WV 25802.

The Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 will conduct Military Final Rites after the memorial services at the church.

Ruth M. Malagrida

Ruth M. Malagrida, 86, of Crab Orchard, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Calfee Cemetery at Mount Tabor.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Raleigh County Humane Society, 325 Grey Flats Road, Beckley, WV 25801.

Anthony ‘Toney’ McDonald

Anthony “Toney” McDonald, age 59, of Daniels, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, following a sudden illness.

Born April 9, 1953, in Beckley, to Mrs. Edith Louise Ellis McDonald and the late Alden McDonald.

Toney enjoyed going to the movies, walking his dog, and going shopping. He was currently employed with Kingston Mines.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Larry E. McDonald; and a nephew, Shaun McDonald.

In addition to his loving mother, those left to cherish his memory include his brothers, Alden McDonald and wife Terri of Missouri, Gary McDonald of Beaver, and Mike McDonald of Elizabeth, N.C.

A celebration of Toney’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel, with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. There will be no burial. At Toney’s request he will be cremated after the services.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. and last until time of services on Saturday.

Dorcas Jane Akers Meadows

Dorcas Jane Akers Meadows of Beckley, daughter of the late Sanford and Jane Lilly Akers, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at the age of 92.

She was born in Dunns, W.Va., on June 9, 1920.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband C.B. (John) Meadows; son, Carl R. Meadows; siblings, Sherman, Coolidge, Huey, Andrew, Mary Meadows, Reba Lilly, Helen Grahan, Virginia Lilly, and Julia Cadle.

Survivors include her daughter Linda Meadows Hornby and husband Bob of Gloucester, Va.; son, Jim D. Meadows and wife Fran of Partlow, Va.; daughter-in-law, Barbara Bowling Meadows of Saluda, Va.; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of the life of Dorcas Meadows will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Interment will follow at Dunns Cemetery in Dunns, W.Va.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Ruth Ann Williams Meadows

Ruth Ann (Williams) Meadows, age 31, of Bradley, passed away Monday, November 26, 2012, following a sudden illness.

Born October 25, 1981, in Beckley, to Earl Williams and Carmella Preston Williams of Bradley.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carlos and Ruth Williams and Irene Preston.

In addition to her parents, those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Larry Meadows; sons, Triston and Tyler Mills; brothers, Earl Williams Jr. and wife Amanda of Beckley, and Brandon Williams of Bradley.

In keeping with Ruth’s wishes, she was cremated and there will be no services.

Tessie Kathleen ‘Tennessee’ Rife

OCEANA — Tessie Kathleen “Tennessee” Rife, 82, of Oceana, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born February 20, 1930, in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late John and Polly Mullins Rife.

She attended the Oceana Freewill Baptist Church for over 60 years, and was an inspiration and Godly example to all who knew her. She touched many people singing the praises of God and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Thurmond Rife; her stepfather, Martin Whitt; a brother, Cletus Rife; five sisters, Bonnie Sue Rife, Brenda McMillan, Retha Walker, Judy Blankenship, and Shelby Coleman; two sons-in-law, Danny Belcher, and Troy Cole.

Survivors include four daughters, Pat Belcher of Oceana, Terenia (Greg) Moody of Knoxville, Tenn., Tonya (Danny) Osborne of Cyclone, and Melissa (Steve) Blankenship of Oceana; five grandchildren, Shawn Codie Miller of Oceana, Samantha Miller of Oceana, David Schumann of Knoxville, Tenn., Jon Schumann of Knoxville, Tenn., and Trey Osborne of Oceana; three brothers, Russell (Molly) Rife of Abingdon, Va., Roland (Wilma) Rife of Wytheville, Va., and Andrew (Janice) Rife of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Ellen Walker of Oceana; Carson and Anna Blankenship who were like her grandchildren; special friends Darlene Hurley and D.J. Davis; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Jackie Grimmett and the Rev. Johnathon Cresong officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2012, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Upper Laurel Ambulance Staff.

The family would like to thank Upper Laurel Ambulance Service, Dr. Suleiman, FMA Dialysis Center, Westside Pharmacy, and Cassie Street, the nurse at Hospice of Southern WV, and all of their staffs.

Earl Frederick Shrewsbury, 73, of Coal City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Clarence E. Slatton Jr.

BARGER SPRINGS — Clarence E. Slatton Jr., 72, of Barger Springs, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born on November 17, 1940, in Warrior, Ala., he was the son of the late Clarence E. Slatton Sr., and Clarabelle Simmons McAlpine Slatton Greene.

Mr. Slatton was employed by the WV DNR as a Fire Warden in Wyoming County, a car salesman, and a real estate salesman. He also served his community as a Notary Public for 35 years. He enjoyed listening to Bluegrass music, camping, fishing, and living life to the fullest.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul McAlpine and Chester McAlpine, and two sisters, Willadene McAlpine Stewart and Josephine Slatton Stewart.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol Sue Bragg Slatton of Barger Springs; two sons, Tim Slatton (Ann) of Forest Hill, W.Va., Ricky Lee Slatton (Kathy) of Lindside, W.Va., and one daughter, Clara Slatton Mitchell of Hilldale, W.Va.

He is also survived by one granddaughter, Yvonne Slatton, and six grandsons, Anthony Slatton (Laura), Brandon Mitchell (Carrie), Ricky Ray Slatton, Bradley Mitchell, Steven Slatton (Sarah), and Jessy Slatton (Alisha); one brother, Joseph McAlpine, two sisters, Magdalene McAlpine Stewart, and Geraldine Slatton Maag (Bill); nine great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; his extended family in Alabama and the Deep South; and a special friend, Johnny Mack Brown.

In keeping with his wishes, he has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Nancy Louise Toler

ROSEDALE, Va. — Nancy Louise Toler, 76, formerly of Kopperston, departed this life Monday, November 26, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born May 26, 1936, at Hemphill, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Isabelle Sullins Ritter.

Nancy was a homemaker, a member of Kopperston Freewill Baptist Church for 45 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Ray Toler.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Gary Ray Toler and wife, Patricia, of Ridgeway, Va., and Henry Paul Toler and wife, Claudine, of Eden, N.C.; two daughters, Deborah Eileen Atwell and husband, Robert, of Rosedale, Va., and Michelle Annette Rose and husband, Danny, of Bishop, Va.; a brother, Michael Ritter and wife, Kathy, of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Peggy Joe Phelps and wife, Roger, of Bristol, Va.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2012, at Kopperston Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Raybon Cook and Rev. Charles Tilley officiating. Nancy will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
