Mary E. Ayers

Mary E. Ayers, 92, of Beaver, formerly of Surveyor, WV, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2013.

Born February 22, 1921, at Green Sulphur Springs, WV, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Andrew Hicks and Leona Hicks.

Mary loved reading, sewing, cooking, and spending time with her friends and family. She was a member of the United Methodist Temple, Beckley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Ayers; three sons, Lloyd, Keith and Jerry Ayers; and a daughter, Janet Gray; a grandson, Art Gray.

Those left to cherish her memory include her five children, Wilda Wood and husband, Wayne, of Hurt, VA, Alice Boggs and husband, Bill, of Beaver, WV, James W. Ayers of Nashville, TN, Linda Passer and husband, Jake, of Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming, and Kay Neumeister and husband Robert of Reston, VA; a brother, Dennis Hicks of Battle Mountain, Nevada.

She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Following the service Mary will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, James T. Ayers, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Family and friends will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Monday, July 1, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

Edward Gail Clark

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Edward Gail Clark, 73, formerly of Princeton, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013.

A celebration of the life of Edward Gail Clark will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 1, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory, on the Athens Road in Princeton, with the Rev. David Damewood officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Missions Committee at Suntree United Methodist Church Inc., 7400 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, FL 32940; Multiple Myeloma Foundation or the American Heart Association.

George Douglass

George Douglass, 90, of Beckley passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013; he was the son of the late George and Goldie Douglass.

George was a Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served overseas during WWII. George was a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge; he worked at The Greenbrier Resort and the Black Knight Country Club as the maitre d’. George also worked for Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens and at the Beckley Wal-Mart for eleven years.

George is preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Shirley Douglass.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Carl Douglass of Beckley; daughter, Michele B. Bruno of Ronceverte; and other family members.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Don Pfleger officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard, of Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Billy Glinden Harrah

Billy Glinden Harrah, 88, of Beaver, passed away at his home on Thursday, June 27, 2013.

Born on December 13, 1924, at Cranberry, he was the son of the late Jesse Harrah Sr. and Evelyn Buckland Harrah Adkins, and was the stepson of the late Luther Adkins.

Mr. Harrah was a retired coal miner, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He had made his home at Beaver for the past 13 years, having lived most of his life at Cranberry.

Mr. Harrah was a member of the UMWA, and attended the Beckley Church of God.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Deeds, by a brother Harry Harrah, and by grandchildren Steven Brown and Cheryl Harrah.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years Sally Bolen Harrah; the mother of his children, Norma Raines of Crab Orchard; four sons, Billy Glinden Harrah III and his wife Donna of Danville, Va., Richard Harrah and his wife Veronica of Sprague, David Harrah of Beckley and Jesse Harrah and his wife Shelia of Conway, S.C.; two daughters, Brenda Heath of Crab Orchard and Jackie Crouch of Lorain, Ohio; a stepson, James R “Jim” Ball of Daniels; his special care-giver and Jim’s companion Ruth McMillion of Daniels. Nine grandchildren, including two whom they help raise, Emily Suddreth, and Abigail Suddreth, and a host of great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, July 1, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Bishop F.D. Sexton officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va. American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be family members.

CALDWELL — Frances D. Honaker, 86, of Caldwell died June 28, 2013.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Adwell Cemetery near Ronceverte. There will be no visitation.

UNION — Jerry A. Lowe, 70, of Union, passed away June 25, 2013.

At his request, his body was cremated and there will be no visitation or services.

Etta Jewel Martin

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Etta Jewel Martin, 89, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Morning Side Assisted Living in Hanover, Maryland.

Born March 2, 1924, in Lester, WV, to the late George Wesley and Mary Elizabeth Webb Martin. Etta was employed by the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Maryland, for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by sisters Macie, Rachel, Willa, and Alice as well as brothers Josh, Woodrow and Jimmy. Survivors include 16 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Vondie L. Cook, II, officiating. Burial will follow in the Webb Cemetery in Maple Meadow. Friends may visit with the family from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 1, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in her honor be made to Trap Hill High School Alumni Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 179, Harper, WV 25851.

Betty Lou Miller

RALEIGH, N.C. — Betty Lou (Meadows) Miller passed away peacefully in Raleigh, North Carolina, on January 5, 2013, as the result of a stroke. Betty moved to the Raleigh area in 2005 to be near her older daughter after retiring from a long career in nursing and nursing education.

Betty, the daughter of the late Violet (McKinney) and Roy Meadows, was born and raised in the Pax, West Virginia, area and graduated from Mullens High School in 1952.

Betty obtained an R.N. degree from Saint Mary’s School of Nursing in 1955, and over the years went on to earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, all while raising a family. She most recently worked as the Coordinator of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, North Carolina. Betty was an active member of Christ The King Lutheran Church in Cary, North Carolina, and a devoted Thursday volunteer at the Dorcas Shop, a community-supported thrift store.

Betty is survived by her three daughters Diana Goodwin of Cary, North Carolina, Pamela Meadows of Sacramento, California, and Jane Miller of Marietta, Ohio, beloved grandchildren Gordon, Dana, Sierra, and Alexa, great-granddaughter Marley, and sister Kitty McTyre and brother Grady Sweeney.

An open Remembrance Gathering in Betty’s name will be held in the Pax Community Cemetery in Pax, WV, on Saturday, July 6th, at 10 a.m.; all are welcome.



Barbara Jean Morris

OAK HILL — Barbara Jean Morris, 73, of Oak Hill passed away Friday, June 28, 2013.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home, where the visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and where the funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Carolyn Diane Parker

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Carolyn Diane Parker, of South Charleston, entered the presence of her Lord on Thursday, June 27, 2013, surrounded by a loving family at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Carolyn was an active member of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston, and 46-year wife of Robert F. Parker II.

Born into the family of the late Lilly and Leo Smith in Wheeling, Carolyn attended Concord College, and is a graduate of Morris Harvey College with a B.S. in Business Administration. Continuing her education at West Virginia College of Graduate Studies in Public Administration, Carolyn found great fulfillment working for the State of West Virginia Department of Welfare in the Division Crippled Children Services, the Maternal and Children Health Division, and Primary Care of the West Virginia Department of Health.

Carolyn’s life, a mere preparation for that moment when she left to go before God  — greater with her love of food, musicals, poetry and cats, was one of family and service. Retiring after 30 years of service, Carolyn continued to assist in fundraising for the March of Dimes, to participate in social service organizations, and to serve in her church.

She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Robert “Bob” F. Parker II; their children, Elizabeth “Beth” Ann Parker and Robert “Robbie” F. Parker III; a grandson, Nicholas “Nick” Wallace Hatcher; sister-in-law, Sandra “Sandi” Ann Parker; and a brother, Richard Smith.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston, with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie officiating. Entombment will follow at Mount Olivet Catholic Mausoleum, Charleston.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 1, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Sidney Edward Roberts

Sidney Edward Roberts, age 70, of Harper, WV, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born on March 14, 1943, in Norton, Virginia, he was the son of Henry E. Roberts Jr. and Kathleen L. Stafford Roberts of Fairdale.

Mr. Roberts was a retired coal mine electrician, and was a member of the UMWA. He was of the Church of God faith, and had made his home at Harper for the past 17 years.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marcella Cline Roberts.

Two daughters, Kathleen Lucille Roberts of Harper, and Della Raechell Allen and her husband Shawn of Crab Orchard.

Two sons: Kevin Roberts of Gibson, Florida, and Shawn Roberts of Barrett, WV.

Three brothers, Terry Roberts and his wife Barbara of Bolt, Ralph Roberts and his wife Eva of Fairdale, and Doug Roberts of Bolt.

Two sisters: Leta Redman of Hanover, Va., and Gaynell Triggs and her husband Richard of Beckley.

A grandchild: Brittany. A great-grandson, Levi.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mel Jamison officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion Post 32 Honor Guard.

Betty Rose ‘Dolly’ Syner

EDMOND — Betty Rose “Dolly” Syner, 83, of Edmond entered into a new life Tuesday, June 26, 2013, at her home. Born February 1, 1930, at Beckley, the daughter of the late Henry Mann and Lucy Wiseman Mann.

Dolly was a member of Graydon Baptist Church. She touched the lives of many children through her children’s ministries in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. She loved to teach Sunday School and was the director of many Vacation Bible Schools. She loved to cross-stitch, sew, and enjoy the flowers from her front porch.

She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Lucy Mann, brothers and sisters Ronald Mann, William Mann, Carl Mann, Glen Mann, Edna Blake, Beatrice Rollyson, and Maxine Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 64 years Rev. Paul G. Syner; three children Larry Syner and Patricia of Edmond, Gregory Syner and Rebecca of Marietta, OH, and Paula Murdock and W Ray III of Oak Hill; grandchildren Larry Paul Syner, John David Syner, Carrie Brock and Alan; Sarah Syner, Audrey Saylor and Damien, and W Ray Murdock IV; great-grandchildren Michael, Christna, Josh, Dillon, Lillie, Rose, Daisy, Mcailyn, Cassidy, and Stephanie; and sister Jean Smith and Leroy.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home where the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Dennis Cherry officiating and where the family will receive friends from noon until time of service. Burial will follow in Nuttall Cemetery.

Sis Thomas

MULLENS — Deloris Jean Dorman “Sis” Thomas, 72, of Mullens passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Born December 13, 1940, at Cannelton, she was the daughter of the late Roy Lee and Beulah Schoolcraft Dorman.

Sis was a former postmaster at Wyco and Corinne post offices and was also a part-time employee for the Mullens post office. She was a member of the Welton Bible Chapel in Allen Junction, was an avid Mullens High School and WEHS fan, and she was recognized for her outstanding service, spirit, and dedication at WEHS.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Earl Thomas; and infant twin sisters, Brenda and Linda Dorman.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving and devoted husband and caregiver of 55 years, Earl Thomas; a son, Jerry Wayne Thomas and his wife, Sheree, of Mullens; a daughter, Vickie Thomas Caldwell and her friend, Rick Bradshaw, of Falls Mills, VA; seven grandchildren, Jana Caldwell and her fiancé, Jared Morrison, Allison Powers and her husband, Vince, Kristen Caldwell, Kara Thomas Brown and her husband, Josh, Brooke Thomas Bailey, and her husband, Matt, Andrew Thomas, and Carrie England and her husband, Nathan; nine great-grandchildren, Addison Powers, Dylan Powers, Ethan Powers, Rileigh Mullins, Kinsley Brown, Mason Bailey, Kelsey Green, Nick Green, and Jackson England; two sisters, Kathy Wills of Cannelton and Athleen Estep and her husband, Ronnie, of Longs, SC; three brothers, Danny Dorman and his wife, Brenda, of Longs, SC, Leroy Dorman of Longs, SC, and Frank Dorman of Atlanta, GA; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with David Pollock and Nick Biggs officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Garden Mausoleum of Peace, Beckley.

Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
