Arthur C. Ayers

HINTON — Arthur C. Ayers, 81, of Hinton, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House, following a long illness.

Gilmer Ray Ayers

On Monday, April 8th, 2013, our most cherished, Gilmer Ray Ayers, passed away at his home on Fortuna Lane in Eccles, following a short illness. He was 69 years of age. 

The first of three children, Gilmer was born on January 4th, 1944, at Beckley. He is the son of Gilmer Adrion and Rujean Bragg Ayers of Eccles. In addition to his parents, Gilmer leaves his brother Charles Ayers and his wife, Naomi of Eccles and Kenneth Ayers and his wife, Helen of Lester. 

Gilmer spent his childhood at Eccles. He was a graduate of Trap Hill School, Class of 1962. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Gilmer was a coal miner, retiring from Pittston Coal. He had 38 years in the mining industry. 

Gilmer loved the woods. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time at the Ayers Camp on the Greenbrier.    

From a previous marriage Gilmer had three children, Chuck, Randy and Lisa Ayers. There are several grandchildren. This family resides in North Carolina. 

On August 6th, 1982, Gilmer married Patricia Sue Keener. To this union was born Mollie and Adrian. Mollie is married to Brandon Coleman and they make their home at Bolt; Adrian is engaged to Olivia, he makes his home at Fairdale. There are three grandchildren, Gavin, Keaton, and Kyler. Sadly, Patricia died on June 8th, 2003. Patricia leaves her daughter Melanie Hinzeman and her husband, Brandon and their children, Jeremy, Dana, Rebecca and Samuel.  

Gilmer will be deeply missed by his family. May He Rest In Peace. To Mollie and Adrian he was the touchstone to their mother.   

On Friday, April 12th, at 3 p.m. there will be a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Garry Hall officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour. Gilmer will be laid to rest at the Oak Grove Cemetery near his beloved Patricia.

Virginia Helen Fitzpatrick Cales

HAMPTON, Va. — Virginia Helen Fitzpatrick Cales, age 92, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013. She was a native of Hinton, W.Va., and a resident of Hampton for 28 years. 

Virginia worked as a housekeeper for 24 years with Summers County Hospital, and she was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Virginia was preceded in death by her daughter, Anna L. Proffit; son, Donald W. Caudell; brother, Robert Fitzpatrick; and granddaughter, Kathy Smith.

She is survived by her son, Richard Caudell; daughters, Susan Bartgis (Kay) and Dorothy Smith (Robert); eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Herbie Fitzpatrick; and sisters, Neda Walker, Patricia Black, and June Lombag.

A celebration of Virginia’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Columbarium. 

Memorial contributions may be made to any animal shelter of your choice.

YORKTOWN, Va. — Walter Clyde Clay, 77, of Yorktown, formerly of Meadow Bridge, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013.

Carlos Crouch

Carlos Lee Crouch a.k.a. Guido, 75, of Beckley, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013. 

Born March 27, 1938, he was a son of the late Harry and Annie Crouch of Cranberry.

Carlos served in the U.S. Army and worked as a mason, but was best known as “The Bread Man” for Flowers Baking Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Crouch; daughter, Margaret Crouch; and brother, Johnny Crouch. 

Guido enjoyed bowling, bingo, mowing his brother’s grass, spending time with his grandchildren, going to church with his son and sister, and spending summers on the lake.

Those left to cherish his memory include daughter, Vicky Toney and husband, Ken of Mechanicsville, Va.; daughter, Missy Crouch and fiancé Roger Fleshman of Beckley; son, Jeff Crouch and wife, Heather of Shady Spring; daughter, Kelly Elkins and husband, Rodney of Beckley; son, Bill Crouch and fiancé Amy Petrosky of Beckley; grandchildren, Ashley Sanchez, Seth Toney, Sara Toney, Allison Reid, Emily Crouch, Haley Elkins, Elija Lively, Michael Crouch, and Bella Crouch; sisters, Linda “Susie” Mays and Rosanna Anglin; Brothers, Pat Crouch and Herbie Crouch; and special Aunt Dorothy Clay. 

Friends and family may gather Thursday, April 11, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. and the funeral will be Friday, April 12, 2013 at 1 p.m., both will be held at Cranberry Baptist Church with Pastors Roger Pauley and Doug Holley officiating. Larry Clay Gill

NIMITZ — Larry Clay Gill, 61, of Nimitz, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at his home following a long illness. 

Born February 15, 1952, at Hinton, he was the son of the late Otis C. and Jessie Rader Gill.

An employee of Briers Furniture Co. for 25 years where he worked in delivery and appliance maintenance, he enjoyed singing, playing music and spending time with his family and friends. 

Larry gave his heart to the Lord Jesus on Sunday, April 7, 2013, and is now enjoying the glory of heaven.

Preceded in death by his son, Larry Gill Jr. and one grandson, Randy L. Cales.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sharon Gill of Hinton; two daughters, Melissa Workman and companion Curtis and Kimberly Salmon; two stepchildren, Brian Gill and wife Gail and Kathy Cales; five grandchildren, Brandon Workman, Tea Workman, Brandon Cales, Hannah Sizemore and Kara Ramsey; two great grandchildren, Travis Morton and Savannah Myles; six brothers and sisters, Shirley Sampson and companion Hayward Cales, Patricia Ralbusky and husband Roger, Dinah Palmer and husband Glen, Ivan Gill and wife Becky, Steve Gill and Weldon “Bear” Gill and wife Sherri and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m.  Friday, April 12, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Chaplain Bobby Meadows and Kenny Martin officiating. At Larry’s request the body will be cremated following the services.

KEYSER — Rev. Alvin Lee Guyon, age 81, of Keyser, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

EAST PETERSBURG, Pa. — Lois Beckler Showalter Herr, 87, of East Petersburg, formerly of Lewisburg, W.Va., died Monday, April 8, 2013.

Eddie Highlander 

Charles Edward “Ed” “Eddie” Highlander, 70, of Beckley, passed away at Hospice House of Beckley, April 8, 2013, he was surrounded by his sons and loved ones. 

Eddie is survived by son Sean Edward Highlander of Gibsonville, N.C., Michael Shane Highlander of Charlotte, N.C. and Chris Shannon Highlander of Park City, Utah and Huntington, W.Va., brother William Highlander of San Jose, Calf., loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Eddie was a loving father, grandfather and friend to all. 

Ed was born October 16, 1942, to Ronald William Highlander and Lucille Bland of Beckley.

He enjoyed sports especially football but his favorite was baseball which he played as a child and passed down to his sons. 

The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Hospice House of Beckley for their loving care and support, as well as Raleigh General Hospital.

The family will see visitors at Melton Mortuary, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, W.Va. at 5 p.m. with a service to follow at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2013.

Laura Beatrice Hood

PINEVILLE — Laura Beatrice Hood, 84, of Pineville, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

Born September 24, 1928, in Matheny, she was the daughter of the late Crawford and Laura Stewart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Hood and two siblings, Donald Stewart and Ernestine Stewart Fletcher.

Laura is survived by two children, Ronald Hood Sr. of Pineville and Penny Hood of Freeport, Texas; a brother, Kennis Stewart of Matheny; three grandchildren, Ronald Hood, Jr. of Trap Hill, Angela Gravley of Cyclone and James Hood of Saulsville; eight great-grandchildren, Dakota, Nicholas, Savanna, Lani and Braden Hood, all of Saulsville, Christopher and Jonathan Gravley of Cyclone and Kylie Hood of Trap Hill.

At Laura’s request, she will be cremated. A memorial service will not be held.

SCARBRO — Viola Ledford, age 89, of Scarbro, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Hidden Valley Health Care Center at Oak Hill.

Carrie Eileen Mann

Carrie Eileen Mann, age 88, of Daniels, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels.

Born on July 16, 1924, at Abraham, she was the daughter of the late C.O. Smith and Flora Arthur Smith.

Mrs. Mann was a homemaker and a dedicated mother to her family. She had made her home in Daniels for most of her adult life.

Her husband, Fred F. Mann; a son Roger B. Smith, and several brothers and sisters  preceded her in death.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her children; Rodney Smith and his wife Debbie of Bristol, Va., Sue Lilly and her husband Fred of Shady Spring, Margaret Vandall and her husband Randy of Shady Spring, Fred Mann and his wife Beth of East Bend, N.C., Nancy Ellison and her husband Jim of Flat Top. A daughter-in-law, Drema Smith of Beaver; two special friends, Lucille Adams of Beckley, and Janet Cooper of Daniels. A brother, C.O. Smith Jr. and his wife Norma of Dry Hill Road, Beckley, a sister Rachel Richmond of Greystone Village, Beaver. Numerous grandchildren and great–grandchildren  are also among her survivors.

Committal services will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Jack Barber officiating.  Burial will follow at the Cemetery.

Friends may call at the mausoleum from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

Robert Minnick Jr. of Beaver, W.Va., passed away Monday, April 8, 2013.

Mack Wayne Morgan

Mack Wayne Morgan, 87, departed this life on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, after a sudden illness.

Born January 10, 1926, he was the son of the late Alton and Susie Morgan of Clear Fork, W.Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ruby Lea Morgan.

Mack was a mechanic, repairing equipment for Island Creek Coal Company before his retirement. He was an avid car enthusiast and was a fixture at many car shows across West Virginia and Virginia with his truck, “Ole Blue” or his classic ’67 Dodge Polara. He will be missed by the many friends he has made through the years.

Mack enjoyed farming, his cats and was well known for raising some of the largest vegetables in the area. He was a guitar player and kept the tunes of classic country music alive. He was also active at city council meetings in Pineville before his illness, and worked alongside his son-in-law, Mayor Tim Ellison in the construction of the new Pineville City Hall. 

Survivors include his son, Larry Morgan and his wife, Connie of North Chesterfield, Va.; a daughter, Sherri Morgan Ellison and her husband, Tim of Pineville; two grandsons, Larry Morgan Jr. of North Chesterfield, Va. and Shawn Morgan and his wife, Suzanne of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He is also survived by his neighbors and good friends, Ernie and Judy Browning.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

The family will receive friends from noon until time of the service at the cemetery.

Robert Browning Jr., Roger Snow, Mike Johnson, Herbie Graham, Shawn Tilley and Jason Laxton will serve as pallbearers.

Russell Robert O’Neal

Russell Robert O’Neal, 97, of Crab Orchard, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013, in a local nursing center.

Born November 7, 1914, in Crab Orchard, he was the son of the late Howard and Daisy Snuffer O’Neal.

Russell was a retired accountant for Carolina Supermarket. He was minister for the Church of the Brethren at Crab Orchard and Oakvale as well as serving as chaplain at Pinecrest Hospital.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel O’Neal and daughter, Karen O’Neal.

He is survived by three nephews, Larry Priddy and wife Janie of Crab Orchard, Don Priddy and wife Vicky of Prosperity and Max Priddy and wife Glenna of Crab Orchard; close family friends, Jim and Sue Campbell and caregivers, Linda Muncy, Joe and Karen Birchfield, Sue Lilly, Delores Lowe and Christy Googe.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor David Shumate and Pastor Owen Stultz officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Friday.

Pallbearers will be Larry, Don, Max and Scott Priddy, Jim Campbell, Joe Birchfield and Mike Westmoreland.

Dorothy Eladene Pickle

Dorothy Eladene Pickle, 91, of Beckley, began a new life in a better world on Monday, April 8, 2013, following a stroke. She died peacefully at The Greystone Inn where she had made her home for the last few months.

Eladene was born on September 27, 1921, in Princeton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Ina Pickle.

She was a member of the Sophia United Methodist Church where she served as church treasurer for many years. Eladene began her working career at Raleigh Smokeless Coal and then on to Columbia Gas where she worked until her retirement. Eladene loved playing bridge. She enjoyed being a member of Circle No. 6 and Beta Sigma Phi.

Eladene was preceded in death by her parents Ina Bales Pickle and James Elbert Pickle. A sister, Melba Trumon Pickle Henderson and her husband George B. Henderson.

Those left to cherish her memory include her nephew, George Elbert Henderson of Cleveland, Ohio; cousins Fred Bales of Richmond, Va. and Patsy and Elgie Crouse of Marion, Va.; her two caregivers Kathy Baker and Linda Hart.

Services will be 2 p.m. today, Thursday, April 11, 2013, in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ernie Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
