Thomas ‘Tom’ E. Ball and Deborah S. ‘Debbie’ Ball

Thomas ‘Tom’ E. Ball, age 61, and Deborah S. ‘Debbie’ Ball, age 59, both of Shady Spring, passed away within hours together both following short illnesses.

Tom was born on September 13, 1952, in Mullens, W.Va., to Dolly Sizemore of Rhodell and the late Robert Ball. Debbie was born on July 13, 1955, in Beckley, W.Va., to Margaret Long of Beaver and the late Averil Long Sr.

They were married December 17, 1974, in Pearisburg, Va. They have been together since high school. Tom’s hobby was collecting coins and memorabilia. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed old antique and muscle cars. Debbie enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and being outdoors. She also enjoyed country/ western music and played the clarinet.

In addition to their fathers, they were preceded in death by a son, Christopher Robert Ball; and Debbie’s brother, Delmar Ray Long.

In addition to their mothers, survivors include their daughters, Cheryl Ball of Beckley, and her children, Hunter Thomas Bowling from Shady Spring, and Nicole Raye French, of Church Hill, Tenn.; and Cynthia Lilly and husband Jason and their children Makinzie Lynn and Daniel Charles of Beaver; Tom’s brothers, David and Harry Ball of Beckley; Debbie’s sisters Sandra Lilly and husband Lannie of Daniels, Cathy Earl and husband Jim of Philadelphia, Pa., her brother, Earl Long of Beaver; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Services to celebrate the lives of Thomas and Deborah Ball will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Prosperity with Rev. Michael Vernatt officiating. After the services are concluded, they both will be cremated.

Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family will graciously accept donations at the funeral home.

Betty June Mounts Browning

LITTLE CREEK — Betty June Mounts Browning, 75, of Little Creek, W.Va., received her wings on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

She was born January 21, 1939, in Mohawk, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clarence and Pearlie Justice Mounts.

Betty was a member of the Oceana Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a son Curtis “Bud” Browning Jr.; a grandson Jonathan Browning; two brothers Donald Mounts and Luther Mounts; and a sister Charlene Mounts.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years Curtis Browning of Little Creek; a daughter Delores (Larry) Arbogast of Bluff City, Tenn.; a son Randy (Tena) Browning of Fairdale; two sisters Eunice Stone of Charleston, and Billie (Roger) Cline of Smith Mountain, Va.; three grandchildren Holly (Steven) Trent, Natasha (John) Cook, and Cory (Alina) Browning; seven great-grandchildren Kameron, Konnor, Kahne, Charley, Julian, Maricel, and Aja; a special niece Tammy (Johnny) Vanover; and a special nephew Roger (Jessica) Cline Jr.; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, March 29, 2014, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Jackie Grimmett officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may gather with the family from 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the funeral home.

Georgia Leah Williams Barr Christian

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. — Georgia Leah Williams Barr Christian, 91, of Royal Palm Beach, departed this life March 23, 2014.

Georgia was born February 3, 1923, in Sophia, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marigold Basham and William Walter Williams, and two brothers, Earl and French Williams.

Georgia is survived by two daughters, Myra Kay Barr Hornsby, Royal Palm Beach, and Sandra Sue Barr Brown, DeLand, Fla.; four grandchildren, James F. Freeman III, Michael G.  Brown, Kristi L. Elliott and Stephanie A. Wolford; seven great-grandchildren, Ashlie Elliott, Conor and Tristan Brown, William, Alexandra and Jeremiah Wolford and Savannah Freeman.

Georgia was an avid bowler in several leagues in Beckley until moving in 2010. She loved socializing with family, her sorority sisters and friends. Georgia will be very deeply missed by all.

Services will be held Monday, March 31, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. at the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church in Sophia. Interment will follow service at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

LILLYDALE — Alvin Cole, 83, of Lillydale, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014.

Jason Harold Dillon

KOPPERSTON — Jason Harold Dillon, 37, of Kopperston, died suddenly Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his home.

He was born December 8, 1976, in Beckley, and was a lifelong resident of Kopperston.

Jason was most proud of his employment on an ambulance team during which time he received National Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Jason attended Delilah United Methodist Church and was a member of the choir. In 2013, he took membership in the church and rededicated his life to the Lord. He had an incredibly sharp memory and never forgot an occasion or date. He was very proud of family heritage and will be sadly missed by family and friends. Jason was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Lloyd E. Sr. and Inez Cook, paternal grandfather, Harold Z. Dillon, father Samuel C. Dillon, and uncle, Jack Bailey.

Family members still living include his mother, Jeannette Cook Dillon; brother, Samuel Clay Dillon; nephew Samuel Konnor Dillon; Uncle Charles L. Cook (Ann), all of Oceana, W.Va., Uncle Carlos W. Cook (Sharon) of Kingsport, Tenn., Uncle Lloyd E. Cook Jr. (Kay) of Wichita, Kan.; paternal grandmother, Edna Mae Dillon of Kopperston, Aunt Susan Dillon Lusk (Leon) of Kopperston, and Uncle Harold Stephen Dillon (Kathy) of Gautier, Miss., along with many cousins who will miss him. He also leaves behind his beloved pets, Bella, Punkin, and Izzy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the Delilah United Methodist Church, Oceana, with Pastor Stan Lowery officiating. Entombment services will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny, W.Va. Jason will be placed to rest near his father.

Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until time of service on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the church.

Pallbearers will be family and friends and Samuel Konnor Dillon will be honorary pallbearers.

Velma Jane Flint

Velma Jane Flint, age 70, of Stanaford, W.Va., passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, on Thursday, March 27, 2014.

Born on April 18, 1943, in Laurel Creek, she was the daughter of the late Roy Smith and Mary Osborne Smith.

Mrs. Flint was retired from Bob Evans Restaurant in Beckley as a waitress. She was a member of the First Brethren Church of Oak Hill, W.Va. Mrs. Flint had made her home at Stanaford for most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Verna Smith Ewing, and by three brothers, Leroy Smith, Lloyd Dale Smith, and Andrew Smith.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 17 years James Flint, a son, Mike Pomeroy and his wife Kim of Beckley, stepchildren, James Flint Jr. of Manassas, Va., Ralph Flint of Culloden, Tina Ebert and her husband John of Nebraska, Douglas Flint of Oak Hill, Charles Flint and his wife Kristi of Mount Hope, and Michael Flint and his wife Traci of Oak Hill. A brother, James Smith and his wife Deloris of Clawson, Mich.; two sisters, Violet Ewing of Prince, Nila Rondina of Sterling Heights, Mich.; two grandchildren, Ian Michael Pomeroy, and Logan Birchfield of Beckley; 23 stepgrandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren also survive. Several nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, Betty Smith of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., and Rhonda Smith of Prince, also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Daniel Legg officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be her son and her stepsons.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, in memory of Mrs. Flint.

BRADENTON, Fla. — Era Ruby Kemp,  89, of Bradenton, formerly of Clay, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014.

Mazie Lane

BUD MOUNTAIN — Mazie Lane, 90, of Bud Mountain, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Princeton Community Hospital following a long illness.

Born September 17, 1923, at White Oak, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary McComas.

Mazie was a lifelong resident of Bud Mountain and a homemaker. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, cooking, and quilting. Mazie loved spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, Mazie is preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Amos Lane; two brothers, Luther McComas and Auldie McComas; a son-in-law, Roy Hagy; and a grandson, Jimmy Burrell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her nine children, Annie Hagy of Mullens, Ruby Burrell and her husband, Paul, of Princeton, Shirley Coffman and her husband, James, of Princeton, Mart Lane and his wife, Barbara, of Bud Mountain, Estel Lane and his wife, Phyllis, of Lashmeet, Joann Lester and her husband, Patton, of Bud, Jerry Lane and his wife, Janet, of New Richmond, Laura Lusk and her husband, Ronald, of Bud Mountain, and Debbie Tolliver and her husband, Buddy, of Hotchkiss; two sisters, Laura Lane of Bud Mountain and Nannie Adkins of Key Rock; 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William O. Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow in Mullins Family Cemetery, Bud Mountain.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
