Murl Adkins

MONAVILLE — Murl Adkins, 79, of Monaville, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan, with Pastor John E. Godby officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home.

Homer Ethan Ballard

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Homer Ethan Ballard, 83, of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Bragg

OAK HILL — Thomas Lee “Tom” Bragg, 76, of Oak Hill, while surrounded by Heavenly Angels and a loving family, drew his last breath on this earth at Bowers Hospice House at Beckley, and peacefully opened his eyes in Heaven to be with the Lord and family members who include his Mother and Father and two brothers.

Raised by Christian parents he was taught the Word of God on a daily basis and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.

Though he lives on in Heaven in a new body no longer riddled with pain he will always be remembered by all who knew him as a man of honesty and integrity and kindness. His eagerness to help those less fortunate or those in need were qualities we must all strive to achieve.

He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School. A U.S. Air Force Veteran and prior to his illness he was a heavy equipment mechanic for Pittston Coal Group at Bolt, W.Va.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of over 50 years Shirley Marie (Patrick) Bragg; two sons Thomas David Bragg and his wife Rowena of Oak Hill and Kenneth E. Bragg and his wife Kathy of Fayetteville; sisters, Anna Marie Poore and her husband John of Beckley and Mary Elizabeth Burnside of Kincaid; three grandchildren Jason Adam Bragg and his wife Betty of Fayetteville, Kenneth Andrew Bragg of Fayetteville, and James Hendrix of Oak Hill; and two great-grandchildren Austin Tyree and Madison Tyree, both of Fayetteville.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating and where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of the service. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, with military rites conducted by Oak Hill V.F.W. Post 3110.

Pallbearers will be Jason Bragg, Andrew Bragg, Austin Tyree, James Hendrix, and Timmy Bragg.

The family would like to express their thanks to the doctor, nurses and staff for the care and attention that Tom received while at the Bowers Hospice House.

Neva Burdette, 91, of Beckley, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

Charles Michael Dillon

Charles Michael Dillon, age 51, of Shady Spring, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, after a long illness.

Mike was born at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on September 14, 1961.

He was a graduate of Shady Spring High School in 1980, and was a well-known local artist and sign maker who operated his own business in the area for many years. Mike was well known and well liked by all who knew him. He was a kind-hearted and generous man.

Mike was preceded in death by his son, Eric M. Dillon, in 2009.

He is survived by his sons, Adam S. Dillon of Shady Spring, and Ryan Dillon of Coal City.

Also surviving are his parents, Charles and Ruth Miles Dillon of Shady Spring, his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Keith Cook of Roanoke, Virginia; his grandchildren, Tessa S. and Eli M. Dillon of Shady Spring, his companion Deborah Mitchell of Raleigh, W.Va., his former spouses, Anita H. Dillon of Raleigh, N.C., and Teresa S. Dillon of Coal City. Nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Son, brother, husband, father, grandfather — Your sweet memory will be with us always.

A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held at the home of his parents Charles and Ruth Dillon, 116 Bessie Lane, Shady Spring, on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at 2 p.m. for family members and close friends.

Irene Elizabeth Gutshall

RAINELLE — Irene Elizabeth Gutshall, 80, of Rainelle, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 30, 2013, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born September 21, 1932, at Sandstone, she was the daughter of the late Henry Earl and Margaret Anna Steninbeck Rookstool.

Irene was first and foremost a mother who raised her six children after the death of her husband, Glen David Gutshall. She worked at the G.C. Murphy Store before its closing and then at the Rainelle Medical Center until she retired. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.

Irene was a faithful member of the Sewell Valley Baptist Church at Rainelle. She was a graduate of Sandstone High School; a volunteer at the Rainelle Christian Academy; and led a Bible Study Ministry at Heartland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for several years. Irene blessed many with her card ministry, her apple pies and rolls and many babies are cuddled in the soft flannel blankets she made for them.

Survivors include four sons, David Gutshall and wife Lisa of Rainelle, Danny Gutshall of Petersburg, Va., Joe Gutshall and wife Susan of Rainelle, and Johnnie Gutshall and wife Janet of Summersville; two daughters, Jennifer Toler and husband Harold of Rupert and Lori Alderson and husband Rick of Crawley; 15 grandchildren, Stephen Gutshall (Amie) of Morgantown, Stephanie Ash (Shane) of Culpepper, Va., Harold Lee Toler (Andrea) of Fairfax, Va., Brad Toler (Katie) of Columbus, Ohio, Zeke Gutshall (Rachel) of Delaware, Cam Gutshall and Lynlee Gutshall, both of Petersburg, Va., Caleb, Jacob and Isaac Gutshall, all of Rainelle, Jonathan Gutshall and Jessica Gutshall, both of Summersville, Nathan Alderson, Benjamin Alderson and Lauren Alderson, all of Crawley; and nine great-grandchildren; one brother Harvey Rookstool (Pat) of Indiana; seven sisters Glenna Daniels of Dawson, Madeline Howard of Rupert, Evelyn Williams of Rainelle, Dola Harris (Ronald) of Teays Valley, Essie McGraw of Cincinnati, Ohio, Margaret Heckelman (Jim) of Norwalk, Ohio, and Carolyn Knapp (Rodney) of Alderson; and special friend Mary Beth Surbaugh of Rainelle.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 2, in the Sewell Valley Baptist Church at Rainelle.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Sewell Valley Baptist Church with Pastors B.J. Grimmett and Fred Fryar officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Boggs, Lee Partain, Wesley Johnson, Charles Surbaugh, Tyler Surbaugh, Gary Gwinn, Garret Vestal, Isiah Tuck, Franklin Tuck, Joshua Tuck, Steve Vaughan, and Kelly Vaughan.

Adam Lee Harvey

Adam Lee Harvey, 28, of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013.

Born March 6, 1984, he was the son of William and Sheryl Harvey of Shady Spring.

Adam was a machinist welder having at one time worked for WC Hydraulics. He had a love for the outdoors, enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and loved playing with his nieces and nephews.

Adam was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Gladys Harvey and Bill Pettry.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister, Melissa Williams and her husband Chris of Beckley; brothers, Thomas Harvey and his wife Jessica of Beckley and Justin Harvey of Shady Spring; grandparents, Norman and Sandy Peters of Naoma; nephews, Tyler Christian Harvey and Zachary Williams; a niece, Aislynne MacKenzie Harvey; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and family.

A celebration of Adam’s life will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Rick Metrick and Rev. Michael Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service on Sunday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent in memory of Adam to Jones Memorial Baptist Church, 401 Allen Ave., Beckley, WV 25801.

Gary Lee Hughes

LEWISBURG — Gary Lee Hughes, 69, of Lewisburg, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013.

Service will be 11  a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Community Pentecostal Holiness Church, on Brush Road in Lewisburg. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of the service at the church.

Judith Abigail Lane

Judith Abigail Lane, age 97, of Cool Ridge, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at home following a long illness.

Born on January 28, 1916, at Ellison, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elder Eli O. Lilly and Cora Clark Lilly.

Mrs. Lane was a homemaker, and was a member of the Salem Primitive Baptist Church at Mt. View. She had made her home at Cool Ridge nearly all of her life.

Mrs. Lane was preceded in death by her husband, John Lane, by grandson, Rick Lane, great-grandson Jason Propps, daughter-in-law Ann Lane, by brothers, Ralph, Carlos, and Elder Kenna Lilly, by sisters Lena Cox, Gladys Cox, Lucinda Lane, and Lola Thompson.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her son Mason Lane of Cool Ridge with whom she had made her home for the past 4 years; brothers Josiah L. Lilly of Cool Ridge, and Kelso D. Lilly and his wife Thelma of Beckley; two grandchildren, Terry Lane and his  companion Mandy of Cool Ridge, and Michael Lane and his wife Karen of North Carolina; one great-grandchild, Robert Lane and his wife Jessica of Cool Ridge, and a great-great-grandson Brody Parker Lane. A brother-in-law, David Thompson of Florida, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Judith A. Lane on Monday,  February 4, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Elder Tommy Pack officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Southern WV, PO. Box 1472, Beckley, WV, or to the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department.

Robert Vincent Lowery, 83, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013.

A funeral liturgy will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, with Monsignor Samuel Sacus officiating. A rite of committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Esculine Muncy

OCEANA — Esculine Muncy, 79, of Oceana, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born September 10, 1933, in Moree, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Dim and Marybelle Blackburn Tiller.

Esculine enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking, and spending time with her family. She fed everyone who entered her home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Beauford Tiller, Alistine Tiller, Virgie Tiller, James D. Tiller, Windell Tiller, Sandra K. Davis, and Judy Mae Hillis.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Dallas Muncy; children, Itha Dane Muncy of Oceana, Terry Muncy and wife, Juanita, of Winchester, Greg Muncy of AZ, and Ilona Muncy Stepp and husband, Emerson, of Lewisburg; brothers, Virgil Tiller and wife, Gloria, of Columbus, OH, and Danny Tiller and wife, Michelle, of Columbus, OH; and a sister, Christine DeBoard of Columbus, OH.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2013, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Entombment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Tom R. Plumley

HINTON — Tom R. Plumley, 77, of Hinton, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale, following a long illness.

Born March 15, 1935, at Glade, WV, he was a son of the late J. Amos and Nell Ward Plumley.

Tom lived most of his life in Hinton and was a 50-plus-year member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge AM&FM. He was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served as military police and was a retired conductor for CSX railroad.

He is survived by his twin sons, Tommy Plumley and wife Cheryl of Jumping Branch and Tim Plumley and wife Pam of Jacksonville, NC; three grandchildren, Jarrod, Matt and Jill; ex-wife, Wilma L. Plumley of Hinton; two brothers, Melvin Plumley and wife Vivian of Hinton and Fred Plumley and wife Rita of Hinton; and one sister, Norma Willett and husband Jim of Punta Corda, FL.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Fox Cemetery at Brooks. Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral parlors.

Hinton Masonic Lodge will serve as pallbearers and conduct graveside rites.

Bentley Domanic Powell passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013.
