Dollie Long Ellison

PETERSTOWN — Dollie Long Ellison, 95, of Peterstown, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.

Durward Paul ‘Pete’ Fox

EDMOND — Durward Paul “Pete” Fox, 88, of Edmond, passed away at his residence Saturday, January 26, 2013, following a long illness.

Born March 27, 1924, he was the son of the late Howard and Maymie Meadows Fox.

Mr. Fox proudly worked as a union coal miner, operating most mining equipment working for more than 40 years. He was a member of the UMWA, and was of the Baptist faith and was baptized at the Beauty Mountain Baptist Church in 1950. He also loved working in the garden, driving his car and talking about the early days in the mines, but most of all, he loved his family.

Other than his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and James Fox; and one sister, Glenna Lively.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Rhoda Gilkerson Fox; one son, Paul E. and wife Glenna Fox of Edmond; Two grandsons, Paul E. Fox II and wife Debbie and John Fox both of Edmond. One granddaughter, Carol Winkleman of FL; three great-grandsons, Paul Fox III, Joshua Fox and Seth Fox all of Edmond.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the Nuttall Cemetery, Edmond, with the Rev. Freddie Parkins officiating.

Friends and family may gather with the family on Monday evening at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Ansted, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Clarence ‘Buck’ Gibson

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Clarence “Buck” Gibson, 90, of Christiansburg, Va., formerly of Lynco, passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, at the Bright Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, Cyclone. Buck will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the church.

Ruby Fern Hendricks

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — Ruby Fern Hendricks, 87, of Gallipolis, Ohio, formerly of Whitesville, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. 

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the Sylvester Baptist Church, Sylvester, with Pastor David Minturn. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

TSgt. USAF Ret. Ralph Jack Mosley

TSgt. USAF Ret. Ralph Jack Mosley, 76, of Holly Hills, Fairdale, WV, and Buckeye, AZ, died Sunday, Jan 20, 2013, slipping peacefully away at 5:20 p.m. in the arms of his wife Margaret while a patient at the VA Medical Center, Beckley, WV.

He was born to John and Violet Stewart Mosley on Nov. 15,1936, at Ravencliff, WV, and was raised there. Many a trip he made to Glen Rogers, McGraws, Pine Grove Hollow, or just running the mountains of WV.

Jack attended Glen Rogers High School and received his Associate’s in Business from Polk County Community College in central FL. A disabled veteran, he traveled the world for the federal government, proudly serving his country for 44 years. He retired after 24 years in the Air Force plus 20 years of civil service at Robins AFB, Ga. He had many stories to tell about those years and liked to say he was a true lifer, a U.S. Government Issue (GI). He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 11307, Bolt, WV, a lifetime member of DAV, and a member of the American Legion. Jack loved life, being happy, the Air Force, the WV mountains, his family and baseball.

In addition to his parents John and Violet he was preceded in death by his first wife Gwen Henry, 2 brothers Ted and Bill, 1 sister Lucille Hall Mosley and 1 sister-in-law Barbara.

Left to mourn their loss are his wife Margaret of Holly Hills, Fairdale, WV, and Buckeye, Ariz.; 8 children including 5 sons: Curtis (Tammy) of Athens, Ga., Doug (Debra) of Martinsville, Va., Robert (Kathy) Watson of Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas (Sherry) of Wittmann, Ariz., and SSgt. Sam (SSgt. Kathryn) Miller of Fayetteville, Ft. Bragg, N.C.; 3 daughters Anita MacKowski and Tammy (A.P.) Garcia of Warner Robins, Ga., and Pam (Tim) Underhill of Byron, Ga.; 2 Brothers Roy (Marilyn) of Glen Rogers, WV, Jerry (Barbara) of Bassett, Va.; 2 sisters, Dixie (Tony) Ferber of Clifton Springs, N.Y., Alice (Francis) Knute of Newark, N.Y.; 2 sisters-in-law Mary of Newark, N.Y., and Shirley (Estil) Bailey of Holly Hills, Fairdale, WV, 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren with 32, 33 and 34 on the way, lots of cousins, a host of special friends and neighbors especially Rodney Brendle.

Jack will be remembered in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, WV, at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, with military honors. A celebration of his life follows, officiated by the Reverends DeWayne Hurd and Harry Lafferty. Come visit with the family at 12 noon until time of service.

Opal Neva Reed

Opal Neva Reed, age 88, of Lanark, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013, at her home following an extended illness,

Born February 7, 1924, in Grandview, WV, to the late James Hendricks and Heddie Marshall Hendricks.

Mrs. Reed was a homemaker and enjoyed working her jigsaw puzzles. She also attended Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Raleigh M. Reed; grandparents, Elijah and Virginia Marshall; brothers, Emory, Bill, and Wannie Hendricks; and sisters, Ethel Martin and Helen Hughart.

Those surviving include her children, Carolyn Hitt (Clifton) of Ripley, WV, Helen Stover (Jimmie) of Goodview, VA, Dean Reed of Lanark, and Raleigh Reed (Pam) of South Port, NC; grandchildren, Emily, Melanie, Johnette, Matthew, Michael, Bill, Racheal, Kathryn, and Shannon; 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside rites and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Sunset Memorial Park on Harper Road in Beckley with Pastor George Wood officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Heather and Cookie of Hospice of Southern WV and also to their neighbors.

Thelma Mae Pozzie Vance

OAK HILL — Thelma Mae Pozzie Vance, 87, of Oak Hill, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at CMC Memorial.

Thelma was born June 30, 1925, at Longacre, WV. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Oak Hill Apostolic Holiness Church for 40 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five of six siblings, and her husband William Vance.

Those left to cherish her memory include all her children, Mary Jane Wood of Belle, WV, Paul Pozzie and his wife Suzanne of Charleston, WV, David Lee Pozzie and his wife Reyna of Costa, WV, Anna K. Pozzie of Culloden, WV, Stephen L. Pozzie and his wife Carolyn of Oak Hill, Melissa Hubert and her husband Chris of Lake Station, Indiana, and Michael Prather; sister Mary L. Sparkman of Crown Hill, WV; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where the funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday, with Pastor Carlos Lewis and Rev. Fuller officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Mildred Ellen Walls

Mildred Ellen Walls, age 95, passed away on January 25, 2013, at her home after several years of failing health.

Born March 9, 1917, in Gilbert, WV, to the late Rush Elkins and Mary Ellen Elkins.

Mildred was a lifelong homemaker. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, flower gardening, and reading. She was especially fond of family history and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her only sister Charlotte Olsen and brothers Okie, Omar, Dwight, Delmas, Walter, and Malcolm Elkins.

In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emick R. Walls; a son, Ray M. Walls.

Those surviving include her children, Roland K. Walls of Beckley, Darold T. Walls (Linda) of Jamestown, ND, Nadine Mossner (Ralph) of Saginaw, MI, Dr. Russell Walls of Morganton, NC, Ritchie Walls (Barbara) of Mount Hope, and Lorin Walls (Carol) of Sophia; 26 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Ken Killen officiating and Pastor Phillip Farrington assisting. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held the same morning from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel.

Her family wishes to send a special thanks to Roland Walls, who devotedly and tenderly cared for her since her husband’s passing in 1974. Also, thanks to Maxwell Hill Baptist Church, where she was also a longtime member. Her grandchildren Alex Walls, Michelle Treadway, and Deborah Underwood who have taken turns taking care of her, and to Barbara Walls who cooked her meals for the last several years. Finally, thanks to Hospice who has also provided excellent care for her.

Julia Lynn Cochran Webb

Julia Lynn Cochran Webb of Beckley went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 25, 2013.

Born January 6, 1950, to the late William and Velda Cochran of Pax.

She was a graduate of Mt. Hope High School and the Raleigh County ACT LPN program. She worked as a nurse in WV and NC. She enjoyed crocheting and attending Stanaford New Beginnings Christian Church.

She married the love of her life and husband of 22 years, Donald M. Webb. In addition to her loving and devoted husband she leaves behind a daughter, Renee Griffin and husband Brian of Graham, NC; son, Wayne Collier and wife Jennifer of Leesburg, NC; five grandchildren, B.J., Chelsey, Jared, Greg, and Nate all of NC; brother, Billy Cochran of Mt. Hope; sister, Crystal Brewer of SC; sisters-in-law, Pat Smith and Ruth Ann Hess of Beckley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Pamela Webb of Glyfada, Greece; and several nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
