Gladys Marie Abshire

MT. AIRY, N.C. — Gladys Marie Abshire, 68, of Mt. Airy, formerly of New Richmond, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at her home following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born February 17, 1944, in Herndon, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Lola Tedder Shell.

Gladys loved cooking, quilting, crocheting, and playing with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband William Henry Blankenship, and her second husband Keenan Abshire, her three brothers Benny, James, Walter, and three sisters Gertrude, Francis, and Betty, a brother-in-law Harvey Bryan, and her nephew Wayne Mosley.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Eugene Blankenship of Mt. Airy, N.C., Sharon Blankenship-Seymour of Mt. Airy, Julia Blankenship-Cox of Claudville, Va.; six grandchildren, Jessica Edwards of King, N.C., Andrew Baldwin of Mt. Airy, N.C., Amanda Lane, of Mt. Airy, Kayla Blankenship of Mt. Airy, Meosha Seymour of Mt. Airy, and Breanna Cox of Claudville, Va., and one great-grandchild Kabrey Edwards of King, N.C.; her sister, Jean Bryan of New Richmond; two brothers, Arlie Shell of Pennsylvania, Beauford Shell of Whitesville, and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

Services celebrating Gladys’s life will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dalley Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Mildred Bryan Suttle Surgeon Atchison

LEWISBURG — Mildred Bryan Suttle Surgeon Atchison, 91, of Lewisburg, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

Born May 29, 1921, at Fairlea, she was a daughter of the late Forrest Bryan and Una Laura Wyatt Suttle.

Mildred was a member of Ronceverte Presbyterian Church and was a retired X-Ray Technician from the Greenbrier Clinic and the Greenbrier Hospital in Ronceverte.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert E. Surgeon Sr., in 1947 and her second husband, Albert Atchison, in 2005. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Ann Hartman, a brother Forrest Suttle and a granddaughter, Diana Lee Rich.

Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Robert Elwood Surgeon Jr. and wife Virginia of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Jeffrey Alan Surgeon and wife Misti of Pensacola, Fla., and LeAnn Hartman Fitzgerald and husband, Steve, of Troutville, Va.; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Alan Surgeon II of Pensacola, Fla., and Kristen Fitzgerald and Katie Fitzgerald, both of Troutville, Va.; also surviving is a sister Marjorie Williams of White Sulphur Springs.                    

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte, with Rev. Youel Altizer officiating.

Special Thanks to caregiver, Janie Rutherford, ladies of Graystone Baptist Church who visited her regularly. Also, thanks to her doctor, Dr. Lynn Smith, nursing staff at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center and special friends at the Seasons, where she resided.

Betty Anne Baker

SWEET SPRINGS — Betty Anne Baker, 77, of Sweet Springs, passed away Thursday evening.

Mary F. Belcher

Tuesday, December 18, 2012, our world became a little less bright as Mary F. Belcher moved on to the next life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Aurora and Dositeo; her brother, Alec; and daughter, Lisa.

Mary left behind a mass of loved ones including her husband of nearly 60 years, Bob; an uncle, Tony Castanon, and his family; a brother and sister-in-law, Mary and Oakley Blevins; a daughter and son, Aurora and Robert; and six grandchildren, Jessica, David, Mark, Robert, Keri and Lindsey.

Mary was born on May 24, 1935. She graduated from Stoco High School, where she was homecoming queen her senior year. Mary was also a graduate of Beckley College with an Associate in Arts degree; Morris Harvey College with a Bachelor of Arts; and West Virginia College with a Master of Arts. With her degrees, Mary taught school in Raleigh County for over twenty-four years.

Mary will be remembered as an educator, a caregiver, and a champion of those too weak or poor to defend themselves. She was a pillar of love that will forever be missed by anyone who ever knew her.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Rev. Alex Lopez officiating.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bowers Hospice House, located at 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

NEOLA — Patricia Ann Brown, 58, of Ted Mac’s Campground, Neola, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Wild Meadow Baptist Church, Rt. 92, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Lowell O’Dell officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at the funeral home.

Willis Zane Brown

SUMMERSVILLE — Willis Zane Brown, 80, of Summersville, passed away Dec. 19, 2012.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville, with the Rev. Tim McClung officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery at Clay. Friends may call one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Kathleen Geneva Cales

GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS — Kathleen Geneva Cales, 74, of Green Sulphur Springs, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Cabell Huntington Hospital, following a sudden illness.

Born February 3, 1938, at Sand Lick, she was a daughter of the late James Wilbur and Sally Gertrude Woods Brown.

Kathleen was a member of the Meadow Bridge Pentecostal Holiness Church, a homemaker and had lived most of her life in Summers Co. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and especially her church family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cales Jr.; one son, Rickey Lee Cales; two brothers and seven sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Michael Rae Cales of Walnut Cove, N.C., Cathy Sue Cales of Green Sulphur Springs, Walter “Hank” Cales III and wife Kim of Statesville, N.C., and Samuel Jay Cales and wife Ina of Statesville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Bobby Brown and wife Enid of Ravenswood; and one sister, Patricia Snodgrass and husband Kenneth of Arnett.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, with Brothers Mark Spence and Bill Garretson officiating. Burial will follow in the Cales Cemetery at Clayton.

Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 11 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.

Jackie Lynn Carnifax, a native of Ramsey, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012.

PINEVILLE — Tennis “Shorty” Cook Sr., 85, of Pineville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012.

James H. Pete Dolan

CHUBBUCK, Idaho — James H. “Pete” Dolan, formerly of Ronceverte, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

No public services will be held, per his wishes. His family in Idaho will have a private memorial service at a later time.

Randolph Thomas Epperly Sr.

OAK HILL — Randolph Thomas Epperly Sr., 87, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House.

Born June 10, 1925, at Gatewood, the son of the late Earl Owen Epperly and Mary Louise (Moses) Epperly.

He was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church where he served as Deacon.

He was a WWII Navy veteran. During his military service he received the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Presidential Unit Commendation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.

After the war, he returned to Fayette County. He worked for Epperly Motor Freight Company in Fayetteville, and he served 30 years as a Deputy Sheriff in Fayette County before retiring.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Rosia Belle Epperly and two brothers Doug Epperly and Myles Epperly.

Those left to cherish his memory include three sons, Randolph Thomas Epperly Jr. and his wife Susan of Oak Hill, John Earl Epperly and his wife Clara of Richmond, Va., and Michael Wayne Epperly and his wife Kathy of Pittsburgh, Pa.; five sisters, Margarite Null of Fayetteville, Jean Hunt and her husband Keith of Hico, Barbara McGuffin and her husband Emory of Oak Hill, Betty Nahodil and her husband Bob of Jumping Branch, and Shirley Shumaker and her husband Ray of Ravenswood; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at the Oak Hill Baptist Church, 613 Lundale Drive, Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Bryan Knight and Rev. David White officiating.

Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military rites conducted by the Oak Hill V.F.W. Post 3110.

Robert A. Shuff

AMES HEIGHTS — Robert A. Shuff, 77, of Ames Heights, passed away Monday, December 17, 2012, following a short illness.

Robert was born July 3, 1935, in Lansing, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clyde Shuff and Russie Pike Shuff.

Robert was a retired roof bolter for the coal mine industry and a past employee of Class Six River Runners.

He has left behind to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Norma of Ames Heights; a daughter, Sonja Horrocks of Water Town, New York; a son, Robert Kevin Shuff of Crawley; a brother, John Shuff of Lansing; three grandchildren, Jesse Horrocks, Toni Hiatt, and Audrey Shuff; three great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Aylan and Levi.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Lansing Cemetery in Lansing, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery.

Edith Catherine Wallace

ROCK VIEW — Edith Catherine Wallace, 80, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born February 16, 1932, in Lanville, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Nickolas and Mary Eleicks Thomas.

Edith enjoyed making picture scrapbooks for her family, doing hide and seek puzzles, watching her grandson wrestle, playing Rummy with Davy on Saturday nights, and watching soap operas. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie R. Wallace, a daughter, Cathy Marie Kennedy, and several brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish Edith’s memory are her children, Dee Taylor and husband, Sherman, of Pineville, David Wallace and companion, Sheila Ammons, of Beckley and Nick Wallace and wife, Marsha, of Coal Mountain; grandchildren, Nicky Wallace and wife, Kellee, Kristy McDaniels and husband, Ricky, Heath Miller and wife, Stephanie, and Adam Taylor; great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Allison and Layne Wallace, Kash McDaniels, Rozalyn Snow Miller; two brothers, George and Paul Thomas; and two sisters, Milka Walls and Eloise Smith.

Kevin Wayne Wilson, 48, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 6, 2012.

Born November 23, 1964, in Montgomery, West Virginia, he was the son of Nancy Jean Steverson and the late David Louis Wilson Sr.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Kelly E. and Myrtle Wilson; maternal grandparents, Bettes A. and Georgie Wall; brother, Keith Wilson; sister, Lydia Ann Wilson; and two uncles Thomas A. Wall and Harold Allen Wall.

Kevin liked music, playing the guitar, camping, fishing, and loved animals.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Nancy J. Steverson of Beckley; brother, David Wilson Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; aunt, Peggy Blankenship of Atlanta, Ga.; two uncles, Bettes Lee Wall of Oak Hill and Raymond Wall of Topeka, Kan.; niece, Amber Wilson of Atlanta, Ga.; two nephews, Dustin Wilson of Atlanta, Ga., and Jeremy Wilson of Long Beach, Calif.; two cousins, Kelly Dorsett of Atlanta, Ga., and Briggette Moore of Atlanta, Ga.
