Gladys Marie Abshire
MT. AIRY, N.C. — Gladys Marie Abshire, 68, of Mt. Airy, formerly of New Richmond, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at her home following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born February 17, 1944, in Herndon, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Lola Tedder Shell.
Gladys loved cooking, quilting, crocheting, and playing with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband William Henry Blankenship, and her second husband Keenan Abshire, her three brothers Benny, James, Walter, and three sisters Gertrude, Francis, and Betty, a brother-in-law Harvey Bryan, and her nephew Wayne Mosley.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Eugene Blankenship of Mt. Airy, N.C., Sharon Blankenship-Seymour of Mt. Airy, Julia Blankenship-Cox of Claudville, Va.; six grandchildren, Jessica Edwards of King, N.C., Andrew Baldwin of Mt. Airy, N.C., Amanda Lane, of Mt. Airy, Kayla Blankenship of Mt. Airy, Meosha Seymour of Mt. Airy, and Breanna Cox of Claudville, Va., and one great-grandchild Kabrey Edwards of King, N.C.; her sister, Jean Bryan of New Richmond; two brothers, Arlie Shell of Pennsylvania, Beauford Shell of Whitesville, and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
Services celebrating Gladys’s life will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dalley Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Mildred Bryan Suttle Surgeon Atchison
LEWISBURG — Mildred Bryan Suttle Surgeon Atchison, 91, of Lewisburg, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1921, at Fairlea, she was a daughter of the late Forrest Bryan and Una Laura Wyatt Suttle.
Mildred was a member of Ronceverte Presbyterian Church and was a retired X-Ray Technician from the Greenbrier Clinic and the Greenbrier Hospital in Ronceverte.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert E. Surgeon Sr., in 1947 and her second husband, Albert Atchison, in 2005. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Ann Hartman, a brother Forrest Suttle and a granddaughter, Diana Lee Rich.
Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Robert Elwood Surgeon Jr. and wife Virginia of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Jeffrey Alan Surgeon and wife Misti of Pensacola, Fla., and LeAnn Hartman Fitzgerald and husband, Steve, of Troutville, Va.; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Alan Surgeon II of Pensacola, Fla., and Kristen Fitzgerald and Katie Fitzgerald, both of Troutville, Va.; also surviving is a sister Marjorie Williams of White Sulphur Springs.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte, with Rev. Youel Altizer officiating.
Special Thanks to caregiver, Janie Rutherford, ladies of Graystone Baptist Church who visited her regularly. Also, thanks to her doctor, Dr. Lynn Smith, nursing staff at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center and special friends at the Seasons, where she resided.
