BECKLEY — Helen Vipperman Bryant Cline

Helen Vipperman Bryant Cline, 91, of Sophia, our loving mother and grandmother, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014, surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home in Crab Orchard, WV. Born June 11, 1922, in Sophia, WV, she was the daughter of the late Meldon and Maude Conner Vipperman.

Helen was a member of Sophia First Baptist Church where she was active in the choir, Women’s Circle, and Women’s Sunday School Class. Our mother’s legacy will be her unwavering faith in God and her unconditional love for her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by first husband, Richard S. Bryant, daughter, Edith Cunningham, son, Richard Wayne Bryant, grandson, Frank Cunningham, Jr., sons-in-law, Buddy Lozier and Frank Cunningham, Sr. She was also preceded in death by second husband, Bernard L. Cline, and stepsons, Don Cline and Michael Cline.

She is survived by daughters, Lois Lozier of Beckley, Shirley Shupe and husband, Donnie, Terri McCargish and husband, Alan, son, Pat Bryant and wife, Patty, all of Crab Orchard; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by stepdaughters, Lydia Galbreath of Panama City, FL, Nancy Anderson and husband, Sam, of Daniels, stepsons, Bernard Cline and Charlie Cline, both of Beckley; 10 stepgrandchildren, 19 stepgreat-grandchildren and 5 stepgreat-great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces and nephews who held a very special place in her heart. She also leaves behind special friends, Bettie Aliff, Margie Richards and Phyllis Lambert (caregiver).

Our family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Hospice of Southern WV for their compassion and support.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Sophia First Baptist Church, 222 First Street, Sophia, WV, with Pastor Charles Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow at Hot Coal Cemetery in Sophia. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Tuesday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Ruby Conley

HENLAWSON — Ruby Conley, 74, of Henlawson passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill. Friends may call on the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mary Margaret Crawford

Mary Margaret Crawford, 66, of Beckley, passed away at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

Born on March 6, 1947, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Adkins and Thelma Adkins.

Mrs. Crawford was a former employee of the Beckley City Police Department. She was a member of the Mabscott Holiness Church, and had lived in Beckley all of her life.

Mrs. Crawford was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie James Crawford, by brothers Floyd “Bucky” Adkins and Paul Adkins, and by a sister Barbara Adkins McGrady.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Freddie Light Jr. of Beckley, and Mark Light and his wife Linda of Stafford, Va.; two granddaughters, Kayleigh Faith Light, and Kendal Grace Light, both of Stafford, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Mary Margaret Crawford on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Mabscott Holiness Church with Rev. E.G. “Buzz” Keller officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

INDIAN CREEK — Dorothy Victoria England, 78, of Indian Creek, WV, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, WV.

She was born June 19, 1935, in Delbarton, WV, a daughter of the late William John and Mae M. Milam Pennington.

Also preceding her in death were her loving husband of 19 years Emmett Lee England; three brothers Richard Pennington, Johnny Pennington, and Troy Pennington.

Survivors include a daughter Monica (Chuck) Massey of Indian Creek; a son Foy Willis “Buddy” (Loretta) Watson III of Cross Lanes, WV; a sister Shirley (Stan) Karpinski of Spartanburg, SC; two brothers Clifton Pennington of Brooksville, FL, and Billy (Judy) Pennington of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren Miranda (Derrick) Saul, Chuck Massey, Jr., and fiancée Bobbi Justus, and Jerid (Destiny) Massey; one great-grandchild Talon Massey and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2014, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Stewart officiating. Dorothy will be laid to rest beside her husband in Stewart Cemetery, Matheny, WV.

Gary Ray Ewing

HINTON — Gary Ray Ewing, 62, of Hinton, went to be with his heavenly Father on February 6, 2014, at CAMC Memorial Division following a short illness.

Born July 19, 1951, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Frazier Ray Ewing and Imogene Cooper Ewing Lester.

Gary was a self-employed contract plumber in the Beckley area for over 40 years. He was well known for his gentle nature and helping hand to those who needed him. He attended First Baptist Church in Hinton.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Hannah Ewing. Two sons, Steven Eric Ewing of Shady Spring and Jerod Ray Ewing of Hinton. A brother, Richard Lee Ewing and wife Nellie of Talcott. A niece, Tonya Keaton and husband Bill of Hilldale, and nephew, Brandon Ewing of Hinton. Aunt, Margie Mock of Hinton, uncle Jerry Cooper and wife Janie of Hinton. Two very special cousins, Fred Mock of Nashville, TN, and Frazier Steven Ewing of Charleston, WV. Many other loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

By Gary’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral services open to the public. Interment will be at Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton. A private family farewell to honor his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Hinton with Pastor Jeff Canterbury and Rev. Al Gwinn officiating.

Harry R. ‘Rocky’ Farley Jr.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Harry R. “Rocky” Farley Jr., 61, of White Sulphur Springs, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Julie ‘Judy’ Mae Acord Gunnoe

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. On Sunday, February 2, 2014, Julie “Judy” Mae Acord Gunnoe of Rock Creek passed on at her home following a short illness.

Born at Arnett, WV, on July 1, 1949, Judy was the daughter of the late Andrew “Doc” and Vacey Lafferty Acord.

Judy was a graduate of Marsh Fork High School and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. She was a member of the Dry Creek Freewill Baptist Church. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, in her leisure time Judy was an avid reader, quilter and gardener. She enjoyed hunting with her husband and any activity that allowed her to be outside or spending time with her animals: Shiloh, Tiny and Brother.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband and best friend for 47 years Delbert Gunnoe, her daughters Tina Ayers and husband Charles and his two sons, Charles “Bub” and Luke, of Beckley and Lisa Worley and husband Andy of Bolt and her one and only most-loved grandson Phyllip Deeken Worley of Bolt. She is also survived by her siblings Lettie Watson of Rock Creek, Nancy Milam of Daniels, Ivan Acord and wife Cathy of Beckley, Jack Acord and wife Barbara of Beckley, sister-in-law Nancy Tolliver of Rock Creek as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her godchildren Roger, Adam and Emily Fraley of Rock Creek.

The family would like to acknowledge some special people whose generosity and compassion were greatly appreciated during Judy’s illness: Sherry Fraley, Ernie and Sharla Cobb, Jessie, Melinda, Miranda and Eli Ayers and Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Reverend Dewey Lowe officiating. Friends may gather at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia or St. Jude Miracle Network.

Harry Halsey, 92, of Prosperity, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014.

Dennis Jade Haynes

Dennis Jade Haynes, 43, of Beaver, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.

Born February 9, 1970, in Hamilton, OH, he was the son of Patrick and Gayle Lyons Haynes of Beaver.

Dennis held a Master’s degree in Education. He was a teacher for the Academy of Vocal and Musical Arts and the Raleigh County Board of Education. He was a member of Prosperity First Baptist Church, AWANA Director, and teacher for the teen Sunday school class. He was involved in sound and recording at the church. He directed an annual community play to benefit Carpenter’s Corner.

In addition to his parents Dennis is survived by his wife, Deborah McCarty Haynes; son, Robert Haynes; daughter, Kelsea Haynes; and sisters, Stephanie Adkins and Lori Haynes.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at Prosperity First Baptist Church, Prosperity, WV, with Pastor Gary Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Hoskins, Keith Janney, Lanny Lilly, Ronnie Bratton and Perry McKinney.

Charles Leroy  ‘Charlie’ Rollins

CRANY — Charles Leroy “Charlie” Rollins, 75, of Crany, WV, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at his home.

He was born April 7, 1938, in Crany, WV, a son of the late Roy and Dollie Bailey Rollins.

Also preceding him in death was his loving wife of 47 years Dovie Elswick Rollins.

He was a member of the Oceana Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter Paula Acord and husband Eddie of Lynco, WV; a son Charles “Chuck” Rollins Jr. and wife Kathy of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren Chafin Rollins, Andrew Rollins and Theodore “Shorty” Acord; two sisters Freda Smith and husband Everett “Bud” and Mary Johnson and husband Bill all of Crany, WV; two brothers Cecil Rollins and wife Donna of Crany, WV, and Bob Rollins and wife Donna of Hinton, WV; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at the Oceana Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Jackie Grimmett officiating. Charlie will be laid to rest beside his wife in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV.

Sarah Emmaline Sexton

FAYETTEVILLE — Sarah Emmaline (known as Emma) Sexton, 97, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the Barbara Kinley Personal Care Home in Oak Hill, W.Va.

Emma was born on February 21, 1916, to the late John Henry Sexton and Rosa Victoria Barker Sexton.

She was a nurse for more than 40 years and retired from Logan General Hospital in 1982.

Left to cherish her memory are one sister, Rosella Goss and her husband, Bob, of Jackson, Mich., and 18 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Willia Sexton Epperly and Zella Frances (Della) Epperly, and three brothers, Rev. Willis Sexton, Arnold Sexton, and Delmar Sexton.

A celebration of Emma’s life will be held Monday, February 10, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the High Lawn Funeral Chapel, 1435 East Main Street, Oak Hill, with Rev. Richard Midkiff officiating.

Visitation will be prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. until time of service. Interment will follow in Huse Memorial Park at Fayetteville.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Barbara Kinley and the personnel at her Personal Care Home for their excellent care of Emma since 2009 and for their love and compassion expressed toward her and her family.

Mr. Sean Christopher Shivers, 42, of Beckley, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Rev. Clara Snuffer

On Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, the Rev. Clara Opal Snuffer of Rainelle, formerly of Eccles, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the Bowers Hospice House.

Born March 14, 1931, at Mabscott, Rev. Snuffer was one of nine children born to the late Rev. Ulysses Grant Stevens and Clara McAdams Stevens.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Rev. Thomas L. Snuffer and her brothers, Charles, Ellsworth, and Garfield (Babe) Stevens, and sisters, Annabelle, Louise, Pauline, and Grace.

In addition to her family, she was preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Cathie and Barbra Snuffer.

Those left to cherish her memory are her brother Harry Stevens of FL, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces, nephews, a large extended family and many friends.

Mrs. Snuffer was a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Ordained minister in the Church of God, Cleveland, TN. She and her late husband were the pastors of several local congregations such as the Bradley Church of God and the Marfrance Church of God just to name a few. The beloved mother of Evelyn Chatham and David, of Thomasville, N.C., Thomas Snuffer and Anita of Grandview, Robert Snuffer and Connie, of Cool Ridge, James Snuffer and Janet, of Lester, Wesley Snuffer and Teresa, of Eccles, Douglas Snuffer and Sue, of Newark, Ohio, and Kevin Snuffer and Molly, of Rainelle; the dear grandmother of 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Bishop Michael Davis and Bishop John Keeling officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the Snuffer Cemetery, at Bolt, WV.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary and one hour before service Monday.

Bobbie Elchard Waddell Sr.

Bobbie Elchard Waddell, Sr., age 79, of Beckley, WV, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born on  May 18, 1934, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Allen David Waddell and Wadie Haga Waddell.

Mr. Waddell was a retired employee of Greenbrier Valley Vault Company at Ronceverte, WV.

He was a member of the Crab Orchard Gospel Tabernacle Church, and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Mr. Waddell was a member of the West Virginia Boxing Hall of Fame. He spent his childhood at Skelton, and had been a lifelong Beckley resident.

“Bob” was a a beloved family man who enjoyed gardening, trout fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sons, Jimmy Waddell and David Allen Waddell, by brothers, Cecil, Carl, Fred, Ted, Wilburn, Raymond, Rev. Billie Waddell, and Rev. Tommy Gene Waddell.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lois Waddell.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 43 years, Ruby Gay Bailey Waddell, four sons, Bobby Waddell and wife Sharon of Shady Spring, Frank Waddell of Beckley, James Elder and wife Lori of Pemberton, five daughters, JoAnn Parsons and fiance Kenny Maggard of Beckley, Debbie Waddell-Welp of Beckley, Cindy Lowery and husband Robert of Lexington, SC, Rhonda Akers and her fiancé R.B. Kirk of Proctorville, Ohio, Bobbie  Lisa McVey and husband James of Beckley.

A sister, Phyllis Waddell Baldwin of Crab Orchard, and a brother Arvil Waddell and his wife  Barbara of Stanaford.

22 Grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Billy Waddell Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Davis Cemetery at Mt. Tabor, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Pallbearers will be Freddie Waddell, Brandon Waddell, Frankie Waddell II,  Seth Gunnoe, James McVey, and Zach Messervy.
