Matthew T. Bounds

MT. LOOKOUT — Matthew T. Bounds, 75 of Mt. Lookout, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Glen Ferris Apostolic Church at Glen Ferris, with Pastor Aaron Bounds and Pastor David Bounds officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Glen Ferris Apostolic Church in Glen Ferris.

Samuel Elbert Brown

Samuel Elbert Brown, 73, of Timber Ridge Drive, Beckley, passed away following a short illness on February 3rd, 2014.

Born September 12, 1940, he was the son of the late Elbert and Blendine McClung Brown. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Joe Brown and Fred Brown.

Sam served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962 and was very proud to be a veteran.

He previously worked as a salesman for Boyertown Casket Company in Pennsylvania and then worked for Roadway Express Trucking Company as an operations manager in Pennsylvania and later transferred to Maryland. He also worked for Jones Motor Trucking Company as a terminal manager in Pennsylvania. His last employment was as a freelance court reporter in Beckley.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Peggy; his sister, Cheryl Kirk, and husband, Jerry; his in-laws; and good friends, Billy Redden and Charlie Coleman.

A memorial service will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley with full military honors at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014. Friends may gather with the family from 12:30 until the time of the service.

The family would like to thank the V.A. Medical Center ER and ICU staff for the excellent nursing care given to Sam during his hospital stay. A personal thanks to his nurses Cindy and Jeremy, and to Dr. Anand.

Pearlie Ann Rakes Bryan

OAK HILL — Pearlie Ann Rakes Bryan, 89, formerly of Oak Hill, died February 2, 2014 in Bossier City, La., following a long illness.

She was born April 8, 1924 in Carlisle, W.Va., to the late John Posey and Fannie Grace Adkins Rakes.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband Richard Whitt; second husband James Bryan, 10 brothers and sisters.

Pearl was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are children, Nancy Pat Whitt Smith of Bossier City, La.,  who was her caregiver and with whom she made her home, James Whitt and his wife Kristy of Marshall, Texas, Grace Ann Bryan Bowen and her husband Bruce of Fredericksburg, Va., Cynthia Bryan Canterbury and her husband Larry of Fayetteville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Randy Smith and wife Darla, Richard Smith, Eric Smith, Sonia Hartsfield and husband Tony, Julie Whitt, Kevin Whitt, Morgan Whitt, Michele Hammerle and husband Derek, Laci Nicholas and husband Mark, Leigh Ann Grim and husband Allen, Tara Bowen, Devin Bowen; brother, Charles Rakes and wife Betty of Strasburg, Ohio; sister, Deanne Robinson and husband Calvin of Republic, Ohio; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ambrose and Kitty Bryan of Oak Hill, W.Va.; sister-in-law Loretta Rakes of Oak Hill, W.Va.; 17 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with Father Roy Crist and Father Rick Rutledge officiating.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Pearl’s caregivers at Hospice of Ark La Tex.

Virginia Maxine Holt Cole

Virginia Bell (Maxine) Cole, 97 of Circleview Dr., Beckley, formerly of Pemberton and Crab Orchard, died February 3, 2014 after a short illness.

Born at Wood Bay, November 21, 1916, she was the eldest daughter of Robert Pierce and Cordella May Rowe Holt.

Always known as Maxine except for her family who called her Mickey, she was a true “Rosie the Riveter” having worked at a defense factory in Illinois during WWII while her husband was stationed with the US Army in Europe. She also was employed and retired from Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley as a nursing assistant.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Seldon Cole; a daughter, Peggy Jean Cole Davis; a son-in-law, Randy Webb; two brothers, Col. Robert Terrence Holt and Harold H. Holt; a sister, Audrey Holt Moore, a niece, Mary Josephine Moore Smith; a nephew, Terrence Paul Moore and a great-grandchild Ashley Wyatt.

Surviving her are two daughters, Elizabeth (Libby) Cole Webb of Ballard; Johnnie Sue Cole Alderson (Frank) of Leesville, La.; two sons, John Kelly Cole (Peggy) and Samuel Harold Cole (Sara Jane), all of Harper Heights; two sisters, Muriel Holt Showalter of LeRoy and Nancy Holt Stewart of Beckley; one brother, D. Neil Holt of Beckley; grandchildren Byron Webb, Allen Davis, Angela Davis Wyatt, Billy Davis, Crystal Honaker Nichols, Rachel Cole, Phillip Cole, Robert Cole and a son-in-law, Charlie Davis; great-grandchildren include Brittney Cole, John Cole, Samuel Cole, Audrey Davis, Tiffany, Michelle, Alicia and David Wyatt; Jeffery Honaker, Michael Bryson Jr., Lawson Bryson and a great-great granddaughter, Danielle Wyatt.

A commitment service will be conducted Friday, February 7, 12 noon, at Blue Ridge Mauseleum, Prosperity, with visitation prior from 11 a.m. to 12. The family will gather at 10 a.m.

Dora Jean Conner

Dora Jean Conner, age 83, of Beckley, formerly of Cool Ridge, WV, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, WV.

Born on July 24, 1930, in Buck, WV, she was the daughter of the late James Robert Pack and Florence Alice Kincaid Pack.

Mrs. Conner was a homemaker, was a member of the Mary Jane Chapel at Streeter, and was a former member of the Open Door Church at Shady Spring.

Mrs. Conner had lived most of her life at Cool Ridge, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Conner, by a grandson, Mark Robert Evans, and by an infant brother, Robert Kenneth Pack.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Beverly Elkin and her husband Bill of Cool Ridge, Benita Evans and her husband Frank of Beckley, and Beth Stafford and her husband Gary of Cool Ridge.

Three grandchildren, Heather Sturgill and her husband Jeff of Beckley, Kevin Thompson of Cool Ridge, and Brandon Worley and his fiancée Shebbie Laverdure, of Beckley. Two great-grandchildren, Natalie Sturgill, Harlee-Ann Worley.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady

Spring Chapel on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Rev. David Rumberg  officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount View Cemetery at Cool Ridge, WV. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home thirty minutes prior to the services on Thursday. Pallbearers will be Kevin Thompson, Brandon Worley, Jeff Sturgill,  Gary Stafford, Bill Elkin, and Frank Evans.

Katey Jo Adkins Eller

JENKINS, KY. — Katey Jo Adkins Eller, 67, of Jenkins, Ky., formerly of Beckley, departed this life on February 2, 2014.

She was the daughter of the late Ira Adkins and Dorothy Havens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert D. Eller.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Gail and son-in-law, Richard Briggs of Jenkins; her son, Eric and daughter-in-law, Christi Eller of Inez, Ky.; three granddaughters, Lexie Eller, Makayla Briggs, and Emma Begley; four grandsons, Brody Eller, Justin Eller, Nathan Begley, and Wesley Begley; four sisters, Irelene Adkins Settle of Salem, Va., Barbara Adkins Gray and husband, Leroy of Oak Hill, W.Va., Drema Adkins Price and husband, David of Nashville, N.C., and Deborah Adkins Fridley and husband, Gary of Beaver; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews; an uncle, Don Tate of Maple Fork and an aunt and uncle, Shelva and Bernard Crump of MacArthur, W.Va. and many cousins.

Services are 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Following the services Katey will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Olen Robert ‘Bus’ Forren

MEADOW BRIDGE — Olen Robert “Bus” Forren, 93, of Meadow Bridge, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 1, 2014 in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea.

Born January 8, 1921 at Beelick Knob, he was the son of the late Ollie Caperton and Ida Mae Petrie Forren.

Bus served six years in the US Navy during WWII and owned Forren Trucking and Contracting until his retirement in 1982.

He is preceded in death by his son Ronald C. Forren; one grandson; one great-grandchild; one brother; five half-brothers and three half-sisters.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 65 years Gloria Houchins Forren; two daughters Twana Tucker of Meadow Bridge and Jeane Blevins and husband Roby of Titusville, Fla.; a son Charles Ward and Diane of Smoot; two grandchildren Edward and Carla; four great-grandchildren Jiah, Maximus, Aliyah and Jeffrey; two sisters-in-law Peggy Day of Meadow Bridge and Joan Forren of Gridley, Calif.; two brothers-in-law Garland Houchins of Amarillo, Texas and Echols Houchins and wife Eloise “Sam” of Alderson; and several nieces and nephews.

A special thank you goes to all his lifelong friends and buddies for all the calls and visits especially during the past two years. Bus lived a little longer than expected and the family is grateful to Dr. Veerapalli and his caring staff.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 7, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc. with Pastor Steve Martin officiating. Burial will be private.

Friends may call Thursday, February 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nancy Jane Helmick

DAWSON — Nancy Jane Helmick, 72, of Dawson, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a short illness.

Born July 30, 1941, at Smoot, she was the daughter of the late Homer D. and Stella Dotson Farren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret, Shirley and Mary; five brothers, Homer, Samuel, Robert, Jim and John.

Nancy was a certified nursing assistant and had worked at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea for over 30 years, where she touched the hearts and lives of fellow employees, residents and their families.

Survivors include her husband, Robert “Buck” Helmick of Dawson; two daughters, Sherry Helmick Callison of North Carolina and Margaret Ann Helmick White (Gideon) of Virginia; a sister, Irene Rogers of Layland, W.Va.; three brothers, Joe Farren of Smoot, Charles Farren of Medina, Ohio and Cary Farren of Goreville, Ill.; and five grandchildren, Kyle and Kelsy of Virginia, Teresa, William and Joseph of North Carolina.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Meadow Grove Baptist Church on Springdale Road at Dawson, with Pastor Vince Deeds officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Meadow Grove Baptist Church.

Patricia Lee ‘Trish’ Kerbawy

Our most cherished, Patricia L. “Trish” Kerbawy, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital on February 3, 2014.

Born on August 7, 1957, Patricia was the precious daughter of the late Hubert and Helen Buckland.

Patricia was also preceded in death by a brother John Buckland and a sister Charlotte Richmond.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband Randy Kerbawy, and son, Phillip Kerbawy, daughter, Kelli Kerbawy, sons Joshua Kerbawy and his wife Jessica, Matthew Kerbawy and his wife Anna. She will be fondly missed by her grandchildren, Brandon, Maicey, Charlotte, Molly, Emmery, Merrily and Piper, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patricia is also survived by a brother, Troy Buckland, sisters, Reba Elmore and Charlotte Richmond.

A Memorial Service will be held a later date.

Sheila Raven Belcher Rinehart

ROANOKE, Va. — Sheila Raven Belcher Rinehart, 73, of Roanoke, formerly of Shady Spring, went home to be with the Lord on January 30, 2014.

Born June 9, 1940, in Welch, W.Va., Sheila was the daughter of the late Hiller and Neta Belcher.

She graduated from Welch High School and attended West Virginia Business College and Beckley College.

Sheila married John Rinehart on June 18, 1960 and served faithfully alongside him for many years of his bi-vocational ministry, and also served as the bookkeeper for Industrial Electric Corporation. An avid flower gardener, she was especially fond of roses. She also loved Christian music and enjoyed her travels on several Southern Gospel cruises. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Sheila will be deeply missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John; her daughters, Susan Rinehart Stilwell and her husband, Steve, of Roanoke, Va.; Monica Rinehart Winter and her husband, Jerald, of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Janet Rinehart Hale and her husband, Andrew, of Roanoke, Va.

Sheila was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Karis Amanda Winter in 2009, and is survived by her grandchildren: Scott Stilwell, Sarah Stilwell, Olivia Winter, Adam Hale, and Asher Hale.

Sheila leaves behind a host of extended family who loved her dearly, including her siblings and their spouses, Alvin and Ethel Belcher, Tommy and Linda Belcher, and Cherry and Steve Titus.

The family gratefully acknowledges the staff at Brandon Oaks Rehabilitation Center for their tender care, as well as the many friends and family who visited and faithfully prayed for Sheila.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley, will host visitation on Friday, February 7, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Saturday February 8, 2014 with the Revs. Robert Lane and Don Deel officiating.

 Irene Mildred Taylor

 Irene Mildred Taylor, age 87 of Shady Spring, passed away at her home on Tuesday,  February 4, 2014.

Born on August 24, 1926 at Shelbyville, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Pearlie and Louise Polly Deweese.

Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith. She had lived at Shady Spring most of her life. Mrs. Taylor enjoyed camping, bowling, bluegrass music, and playing bingo. Mrs. Taylor also provided foster care for many young children several years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Taylor in 1981, her longtime companion, Glenville Richmond in 1997, by her daughter, June Barnett in 2006, and  by a brother, Harold Deweese.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Tommy Jay Gassaway of Carson City, Nev., Robert Schmahl of Shady Spring, Virginia York and her husband Mark of Decatur, Ill., Susie Havener and her husband Leonard of Decatur, Ill., Chris Cernuto and her husband Mike of Crab Orchard, a foster son, Joey Redden of Beckley.

The family would also like to recognize her long time partner and friend, Hubert Richards of Shady Spring, a special tribute to Irene’s caregiver Sharon Holdren of Shady Spring, to whom the family gives much thanks.

Grandchildren, Travis Gassaway and Troy Gassaway of Nevada, Robert Schmahl Jr. and his wife Katie of Kansas, Nikki Schmahl of Florida, Vanessa McClelland and her husband Brett of Illinois, Kyle York and his wife Laura of Illinois, Shelley Gregg and her husband Tom of Illinois, Tricia Norman of Florida, Butch Canant and Chuck Canant of Oklahoma.   Great grandchildren, Xavier, Siane, Matt, and Rosemarie Schmahl, Brittany and Brandon McClelland, Emma York, Rachel and Sarah Barter, Colton Kolbeck, Kaitlin Havener, Emy and Bella Gassaway, Chance and Shylee Schmahl. Her special pet, her dog Bailey.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 3 p.m., with Rev. Bob Stoddard officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum  at Prosperity, W.Va.  Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Paul Thurmond Whitaker

UPLAND — Paul Thurmond Whitaker, 83, of Upland, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at his home following a short illness.

Born April 29, 1930 in Rainelle, he was the son of the late John L. and Adeline Prater Whitaker.

Mr. Whitaker was a retired steelworker for Bethlehem Steel Corporation and was a member of Elk Knob Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Orval, Ernie, Lawrence and John Whitaker and also by seven sisters, Marie Buchanan, Mae Goddard, Myrtle Waugh, Mary Whitaker, Grace Whitaker, Beulah Foster and Letha Wills.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis G. Whitaker; four sons, Paul E. Whitaker, Jack Whitaker and John S. Whitaker, all of Hinton and David Gary Whitaker of Baltimore; two step-sons, Benny Allen and wife Cheryl of Hinton and Rudy Allen and wife Teresa of Forest Hill; one brother, Ted Whitaker of Jefferson, Md. Six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2014 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Benny Allen and Ray Klaiber officiating. Burial will follow in the Upland Cemetery at Upland. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be, Jarrod, Jayme, Teddy and David Whitaker, Doug and Cecil Grimmett and Ron Foster.
