Mildred Faye Johnson Acord

OCEANA — Mildred Faye Johnson Acord, 85, of Oceana, WV, gained her wings on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, WV.

She was born March 21, 1928, at Clear Fork, WV, the oldest daughter of the late Mac Conrad and Lula Bailey Johnson.

Mildred was a homemaker, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW post 8364, Wyoming County FXT Homemakers, Ocean Band Boosters, member of the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, and the Missionary Women’s. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Aunt. With her gift of gab she never met a stranger.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years Lloyd Clinton Acord and one son Danny Lee Acord, sister Narcissa Hatfield, and brothers James and Darrell Johnson.

She is survived by her son Lloyd Curtis Acord and wife Judy of Ghent, four daughters, Brenda Louise Lovins and her husband Michael of Oceana, LaDonna Sue Acord of the home, Doris Ann Reed and her husband Mickey of Bolt, Bonita Faye Sayre and her husband Douglas of Daniels, a daughter-in-law Terry Acord of Oceana, siblings Wayville Johnson and his wife Carol of Bolt, Conrad Johnson of Hoquaim, WA, Frankie Johnson of Des-Plains, IL, Doyle Johnson and his wife Phyllis, Virginia Stafford, Genevie Laxton, and Patricia Johnson all of Oceana. Grandchildren Rita Atha, Todd Lovins, Jennifer Bragg, Steven Lovins, Christie Cline, Cynthia Nutter, Katrina Acord, Jessica Reed, Jared Reed, Travis Surratt, Makaila Lovins, Anita Stewart, Aren Dodge, and Jayna Sayre. Great-grandchildren, Lloyd Nickolas Acord, Hannah Atha, Amber Nutter, David Nutter, Brooke Nutter, Brenton Lovins, Brooklyn Lovins, Keisha Crum, Abby Crum, Tori Crum, Austin Cline, Caitlin Cline, Cassidy Cline, Trevor Birchfield, Kylee Birchfield, Logan Surratt, Thomas Stewart, Alison Dodge and a host of other loving family and friends.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, Kopperston, WV, with Pastor James Hamrick, and Rev. Jerry Cook officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV.

Friends may gather with the family at 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014, at the church and also 2 hours prior to the services.

Tony Mike Bowyer, 57, of Beckley, died on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Fred Lovell officiating.

Burial will be at Pax Community Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary Lee Coffey, 97, of Edmond, passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, Gatewood, with Pastor Rick Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at the Coffey Family Cemetery at Edmond.

Virginia Cole, 97, of Daniels, passed away on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014.

Dora Jean Conner

Dora Jean Conner, age 83, of Beckley, WV, formerly of Cool Ridge, WV, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, WV.

Born on July 24, 1930, in Buck, WV, she was the daughter of the late James Robert Pack and Florence Alice Kincaid Pack.

Mrs. Conner was a homemaker, was a member of the Mary Jane Chapel at Streeter, and was a former member of the Open Door Church at Shady Spring.

Mrs. Conner had lived most of her life at Cool Ridge, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Conner, by a grandson, Mark Robert Evans, and by an infant brother, Robert Kenneth Pack.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Beverly Elkin and her husband Bill of Cool Ridge, Benita Evans and her husband Frank of Beckley, and Beth Stafford and her husband Gary of Cool Ridge.

Three grandchildren, Heather Sturgill and her husband Jeff of Beckley, Kevin Thompson of Cool Ridge, and Brandon Worley and his fiancée Shebbie Laverdure, of Beckley. Two great-grandchildren, Natalie Sturgill, Harlee-Ann Worley.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Rev. David Rumberg  officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount View Cemetery at Cool Ridge, WV. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home thirty minutes prior to the services on Thursday. Pallbearers will be Kevin Thompson, Brandon Worley, Jeff Sturgill,  Gary Stafford, Bill Elkin, and Frank Evans.

Mary Margaret Crawford

Mary Margaret Crawford, 66, of Beckley, passed away at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

Born on March 6, 1947, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Adkins and Thelma Adkins.

Mrs. Crawford was a former employee of the Beckley City Police Department. She was a member of the Mabscott Holiness Church, and had lived in Beckley all of her life. 

Mrs. Crawford was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie James Crawford, by brothers Floyd “Bucky” Adkins and Paul Adkins, and by a sister Barbara Adkins McGrady.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Freddie Light Jr. of Beckley, and Mark Light and his wife Linda of Stafford, Va.; two granddaughters, Kayleigh Faith Light, and Kendal Grace Light, both of Stafford, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Mary Margaret Crawford on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Mabscott Holiness Church with Rev. E.G. “Buzz” Keller officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Vernon Ballard Elmore

Vernon Ballard Elmore, 71, of Pickaway, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Home following a long illness.

He was born Feb. 2, 1943, on Eads Mountain, Second Creek and was the son of Walter Ballard and Ruth Jane Vance Elmore.

Mr. Elmore was a farmer all his life.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Bonnie Flack, Mary Sue Poage and Ruby McNeely, and five brothers, Leroy Vance, Lewis Elmore, Earl Elmore, Dallas Elmore and Jim Elmore.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Ann Elmore; one son, Gregory Elmore (Laura) of Pickaway; three daughters, Barbara Berry (Chris) of Connellys Springs, N.C., Tina Wickline (Chuck) of Pickaway, and Karen Moody (Dean) of Morgantown, N.C.; five grandchildren, Casey Elmore (Sarah) of Ronceverte, Christopher Wickline of Pickaway, Brandon Stevens of White Sulphur Springs, Santana Elmore of Lewisburg and Hannah Berry of Connellys Spring, N.C.; one great-grandchild, Chael Elmore of Ronceverte; four sisters, Betty Morrison (Jim) of Ronceverte, Carolyn Erskine (Jesse) of Ronceverte, Nancy Morgan (John) of Nags Head, N.C. and Rose Mann (Michael) of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Oral Elmore (Brenda) of Union and Tom Elmore (Ellen) of Second Creek.

Services for Mr. Elmore will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte with Pastor Timothy Dillon officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery in Second Creek.

The family will receive their family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at the funeral home.

Margaret Louise Fannon

Margaret Louise Fannon, 79, of Ballard, passed away at a Christiansburg, Va. hospital on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

Born on April 13, 1934, at Winding Gulf, WV, she was the daughter of the late Rigg Heath and Nora Myrtle Cadle.

Mrs. Fannon was a homemaker, and a member of the Dry Pond Baptist Church. She had made her home at Ballard for the past several years.

Mrs. Fannon was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Fannon.

Surviving is her son, Johnny Mack Brown of Ballard.

Audrey Odell Farley

Audrey Odell Farley, 92, of Cool Ridge, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley on Sunday, February 2, 2014 following a short illness.

Born on March 12, 1921, at Ellison, he was the son of the late William Matthew Farley and Eliza Irene Meador Farley.

Mr. Farley was a former saw mill employee, log truck driver and construction worker. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran having served as an anti-aricraft gunner in the European Theater. Mr. Farley was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

“Every year dad raised a sizable vegetable garden and always shared his harvest with friends and family. He was known as an excellent carpenter, timberman and sawyer.

“Dad was a wise and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather.”

Mr. Farley was preceded  in death by his wife of 56 years, Nellie Farley, in 2002; by sons, Hartzel in 2003, Kenneth in 2006 and Steven Farley in 2010; by brothers, Zina, Jason, and Hollis Farley and by a half-sister.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his sons, Archie Dale Farley and his wife Kathy of Glen Morgan, John Farley of Polk, Neb., Tim Farley and his wife Dorothy of Cool Ridge, and Jesse Farley and his wife Teresa of Mt. View; his daughters, Betty White of Shady Spring, Macie Farley of Beckley, and Kathy Webb and her husband Wayne of Charleston; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Elder Tommy Pack officiating.

Burial will follow at the Drewry Farley Cemetery at Ellison Ridge. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends, nephews, and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Charles William Forrest, 78, of Hinton, formerly of Columbia, Ky. went home to be with the Lord Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

At his request he has been cremated and a memorial service will be conducted in Kentucky at a later date.

Burbege ‘Dickie’ Marcum

Burbege “Dickie” Marcum, 75, of Whitesville, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his home in Whitesville after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 20, 1938, in WV, a son of the late Willie and Evia Porter Marcum.

He was retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local No. 6608. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with over eight years of service.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Faye Marcum; two brothers, Willie Marcum Jr. and Edward Charles Marcum.

He is survived his son, Dean Marcum and wife, Melissa of Kenna; grandchildren, Dylan, Daulton and Douglas; Ronnie  Williams III and Billi Williams; five sisters, Lillian Marcum of Dingis, Dollie Belcher of Ky., Wanda Curry of Ky., Marie Walden of Tenn., Juanita Norwood of Tenn.; five brothers, Lonnie Marcum of Kopperston, Ernie Marcum of Sara Ann, Jackie Marcum of Williamson, Billy Marcum of Tenn., Tony Marcum of Matewan; caregivers, Connie Rose and sisters and brother in law, Dennis and Dotty Aliff, Becky and David Pettry, Joyce and Eugene Spurlock, Sandra and Pat Montgomery and several half brothers and sisters and his little dog Rocky who he loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at 1 p.m. in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, WV, with Rev. Eugen Spurlock officiating. Interment will follow at the Pineview Cemetery in Orgas, WV.

Visitation will be two hours before the service.

 

Betty Leigh McVey

Betty Leigh McVey, 87, of Ansted, departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, in Charleston.

Betty was born October 30, 1926, in Nicholas County and was the daughter of the late J. Mack Linkenhoker and Bertha Hypes Linkenhoker.

Mrs. McVey was a member of the Church Of The Redeemer of Ansted. She had worked many years as a drug store attendant for the Linkenhoker Drug Store in Ansted and was a homemaker.

Betty is survived by two daughters, Jordon T. McVey of Ansted and Helen Leigh Wood of Ansted; two sons, Thomas E. McVey of Hanover, Pa. and Joseph F. McVey of Ansted; and one sister, Webber Copley of Kanawha City.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at the Church of the Redeemer in Ansted with Father Roy Gene Crist officiating.

Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

There will be no visitation. Mrs. McVey was cremaeted per her request.

Donald Lee Page, 83, of Beckley, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2014.

John Riley Reggi, 90, of Stanaford, died on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 and his son, Randall A. Reggi, 59, of Raleigh, NC, formerly of Stanaford, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

Dwight Wayne ‘Pedro’ Ricks

Mr. Dwight Wayne “Pedro” Ricks, 54, of Beckley, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House of Beckley after a courageous battle with Lymphoma.

Born May 16, 1959, in Beckley, he was a beloved son of the late Gladys Whittenburg.

“Pedro” attended primary, secondary and high school in Beckley. A 1978 graduate of WWHS, he furthered his education at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a “naturally gifted artist” and had a passion for art and music.

He attended God’s House of Miracles UHC, in Beckley, where he relished faith, fellowship, and service.

Pedro worked in the hospitality field for most of his adult life with a resume that included “Morton’s of Chicago” in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Atlanta, Ga., the “Fox Theater” and Ted Turner’s “The Omni” in Atlanta, Ga. Upon returning to Beckley, he was employed at “Black Knight Country Club” and Pinecrest Hospital until his illness.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Roy P. Whittenburg in June 2013; aunt, Mrs. Fannie “Vinnie” Coles; three uncles, James Whittenburg, Joe Dean Whittenburg and Rev. Lucious Whittenburg and cousin, Joyce Whittenburg.

Left to cherish many fond memories are his brothers, Francis (Peggy) Whittenburg of Gaffney, S.C., Samuel “Nick” Whittenburg of Norfolk, Va., and Leondus “ Leo” Whittenburg of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Brenda W. Halsey of Gaffney, S.C., Christine  (John Sr.) Gallman of Chester, S.C., Diana (Joseph) Johnson, Gloria (Rushon) Ricks-Colin, Judy (Larry Sr.) Patterson, all of Beckley, and Lisa Whittenburg of Charleston; uncle, Douglas Whittenburg of Asheville, N.C.; special nieces, Kesha Mason, April Greene and Maia Patterson and a host of other nephews, nieces, relatives, and “very special” close friends.

Conrad Albert Roehling

Conrad Albert Roehling, of Sterling, Va. passed on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in the loving presence of his family, at the age of 81.

Born September 22, 1932, to parents Viola Jane Moffit and Charles Henry Roehling of Washington, D.C., Conrad served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Reserve and as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, until 1957. 

Before his discharge, he married his lifetime love, Barbara Lee Wright, of Beckley, and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage. 

Conrad was the first in his family to graduate from college, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Benjamin Franklin University. 

Conrad was preceded in death by his sister Carlotta Pizzuto and survived by his sister Cathy Starbuck, his devoted wife Barbara, his children Theresa Kay Polk of Potomac Falls, Va., Charles Henry Roehling II of Ashburn, Va., Denise Michelle Johnson of Sterling, Va. and his six granddaughters Katie, Amber, Morgan, Samantha, Nicole and Emily. 

His legacy will continue to shine bright in the unwavering love of his wife, children and grandchildren who count him as the greatest man on Earth.

A memorial service with gravesite military honors was held at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Va. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014. 

Memorial donations may be made to his lifelong charity, Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, in his name.

M. Kent Roop, 84, of Beckley, passed away at the Beckley VA Medical Center on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014.

Paul Edward ‘Bolt’ Seabolt

Paul Edward “Bolt” Seabolt, 58, of Richwood, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014.

Per his request he will be cremated. There will be memorial services at a later date.

Viola Sheets

Viola Sheets, age 82, of Beckley, died January 28, 2014. She was born on July 28, 1931, in Montebello, Va. She was the daughter of the late B.H. Campbell and Nellie Layton Campbell.

Viola attended schools in Bramwell, and retired from G.C. Murphy Co. with 30 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ray Sheets. They were residents of Stephenson, W.Va., for more than 50 years until his death in 2008. Also preceding her in death, her son-in-law Alan Holliday. Brothers and spouses, Hunter and Edna Campbell, Ralph and Betty Campbell. Sisters and spouses Louise Franklin, Frances and Clarence Whittaker, Jane and Frank Fernandez, and many of her Sheets family.

Viola is survived by her daughters, Brenda Sheets Benedum and husband Jim Benedum of Bridgeport, W.Va., and Kathy Holliday of Beckley, with whom she made her home. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jaimie Benedum-Scott and Walter, Alan J. Holliday II and Jill, Courtney Benedum, Michael Holliday and Cristal, and Kelsey Benedum. Also her great-grandsons Tyler Holliday, Walt Scott IV, Grayson Holliday, Myles Ray Scott, Landan and Dylan. She is also survived by her sister Evelyn Bailey and husband Paul Bailey, sisters-in-law Ruby Suits and Roy and Hazel Hollars, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Mother’s legacy will be her unwavering faith in God and her unconditional love for her family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Tommy Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton, W.Va.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Wayne Gail Smith, 75, of Ronceverte, passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, peacefully in his sleep at home.

He was born Nov. 2, 1938, in Crichton.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gail Smith and Dama Smith Whitt, and his sister Patsy Legg.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Mary Smith of Ronceverte; his children, Christine Guettler (Mark) of Brown Summitt, Gibsonville, N.C., Susan Smith-Linton (Chris) of Ronceverte, Elizabeth Smith of Ronceverte, Christopher Smith (Lisa) of Bridgeport; his grandchildren, Brandius Smith of N.C., Amber Dorsey of Lewisburg, Brianna McClung of Columbus, Ohio, Steven Smith of Ronceverte, Sierra Smith of Bridgeport, Christa Smith of Bridgeport, Coy Linton of Ronceverte; his great-grandchildren, Jaden Dorsey of Lewisburg, Grayson Smith of Gibsonville, N.C. and Gavin Satterwhite of Lewisburg; his brother, Gary Smith (Jean) of Crawley; and his sister, Joan Paitsel (Edward) of Pilot Mountain, N.C.

Wayne was on the Admiral’s Staff Comcrudesflot Two of the U.S. Navy; he was a member of the Ronceverte Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Wayne’s biggest pleasure in life was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Ronceverte Baptist Church in Ronceverte with Pastor Andy Howdock officiating. Entombment will follow in Rosewood Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be sent to Ronceverte Baptist Church for the James Holiday III special equipped van fund at 617 Main Street, Ronceverte, WV 24970.

Johnny J. Soos

Johnny J. Soos, 79, of Leslie, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, following a long illness.

Born Nov. 22, 1934, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Lawrence L. and Anna Marie Molnar Soos.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ursley “Betty” VanMeter Soos in 2008; one sister, Clara Soos; and three brothers, Bill, Lawrence “Larry,” and Alex Soos.

Survivors inlcude two daughters, Brenda Stump (Rex) and Karen McClung (Bruce); one sister, Irene Laughorn; two brothers, Frankie Soos and Jimmie Soos; three grandchildren, Tara, Wesley and Jamie; five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Adam, Emily, Alyssa and Khole; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be private family services only. Burial will be at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, WV.

Tammy Margaret Stafford

Tammy Margaret Stafford, 44, of Salem, Va., formerly of Fanrock, WV passed away on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Rev. Norman Gray officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Morgan Cemetery, Indian Creek, WV.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, until time of service at the funeral home.

Rhonda Kay Tomes, of Beaver, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

Rhonda’s request was for creamation.

Clara Ellen Webb

Clara Ellen Webb, 71, of Cool Ridge, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born on July 22, 1942, at Mt. View, she was the daughter of the late Clemon Otis Wood and Willie Isabelle Lilly Wood.

Mrs. Webb was former employee of Four Star Tool in Rosemont, Ill. She was also a former employee of Shaw Frank Engineering in assembly work.

Mrs. Webb had made her home in West Virginia for the past eight years. She was an excellent cook.

Mrs. Webb was preceded in death by her sister, Lena Bell Farley, and by a half-brother Charlie Wood.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 51 years, Charles Wayne Webb;  her daughter, Kimberly Lynnette Widmaier and her husband James Peter of Bristol, Wis., Tommy Wayne Webb and his wife Monica of Berkley, Ill; three grandchildren, Robert Widmaier, Brandon Webb, and Anthony Webb.

The family extends special thanks to the Bowers Hospice House for their excellent care of Mrs. Webb.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be family members and friends.
