Jonathan Lee Bibb

OAK HILL — Jonathan Lee Bibb, 18, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at C.A.M.C. Memorial Division from injuries received in a vehicle accident.

Born April 21, 1995, at Beckley, the son of Michael Ray Bibb, Sr., of Oak Hill and the late Sherry Lee Buckland Bibb Greene.

He would have been a Senior this fall (2013 - 2014) at Oak Hill High School, where he was a member of the JROTC from 2009 - 2012 and the ROTC from 2012 - 2013.

He attended the Dothan Baptist Church.

He enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, and hunting.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his mother Sherry Lee Buckland Bibb Greene; his stepfather Donnie Greene, his grandfather John A. Bibb, Jr., and his grandmother Rose M. Buckland.

Those left to cherish his memory include his father Michael Ray Bibb, Sr., and his stepmother Rhonda Adams of Oak Hill; his brothers and sisters Michael Ray Bibb, Jr., of Oak Hill, Levi Fenton of Page; Emily Bibb of Pineville, and Haley Bibb of Maple Fork; his grandmother Debbie L. Bibb of Oak Hill; his grandfather Lee Buckland of Scarbro, and his stepgrandmother Judy Buckland of Scarbro.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, where the funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday with Pastor Robert Morey officiating and where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

JoAnn Bika Blake

JoAnn Bika Blake, 74, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at her home in Beckley.

She was born on September, 9, 1938, in Skelton, W.Va., to John and Sylvia Catherine Perdue Bika.

JoAnn married Leaborn Averette (Pete) Blake in 1956. They were happily married for 57 years. Shortly after their marriage, JoAnn and her husband, Pete Blake, relocated to Baltimore, Md., where she enjoyed a rewarding career, a loving family and lasting memories. While in Baltimore, JoAnn worked at Maryland National Bank and Commercial Credit Equipment Corporation. Upon returning to Beckley, JoAnn continued her career at Commercial Credit and retired after 34 years of employment from United National Bank as Assistant Vice President. She attended the Oak Grove Christian Church.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents John and Catherine Perdue Bika, her brother James (Jimmy) Bika, sisters Shirley Faye Bika Puckett and Julia Bika Thompson.

JoAnn is survived by her husband Leaborn Averette (Pete) Blake of Beckley; her son Gary J Blake of Charleston, W.Va.; her daughter Gina Mahaffey and husband Allen of Mt. Hope, W.Va.; sister Debbie Bika Frey; a special grandson Allen Mahaffey II and wife Ashley Rizzi Mahaffey, grandchildren David, Jesse and RaDonna; special sister-in-law Bea Farley; brother-in-law Tommy Thompson; nieces; nephews; her extended loving family in Maryland, special lifelong friends Joe Kinnicki and Nellie Kern, formerly of Baltimore, Md., and numerous other relatives.

Visitation will be held at Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home, 1901 South Kanawha Street, Beckley on Saturday, August 10, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Funeral Services will be conducted at Rose & Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, August 11, at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Kelly Gowen officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery, 273 Oak Grove Road, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Allen Mahaffey II, Nick Rizzi, Steve Tanner, Kim Reed, Allen Mahaffey, Gary White.

Charles K. Connor Jr.

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. — Charles K. “Charlie” Connor Jr., 89, of Treasure Island, Fla., formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, July 21, 2013.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Beckley Presbyterian Church, South Kanawha Street. Friends may gather with the family beginning at 1 p.m. A reception will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at the church.



Azie Goff

On Tuesday, August 6th, 2013, our most cherished, Azie Gay Rollins Goff of Randolph Street, Beckley, passed away from complications of the heart. A patient at the University of Virginia, Azie was 83 years of age.

Born on Sept. 21st, 1929, at Glen Rogers, she was the daughter of the late Gussie “Bud” and Hallie Elswick Rollins. Her sisters, Margaret Bilbrey and Versie Davis, and her brothers, Pete, Paul and Claude “Pud” Rollins, have preceded her in death.

Azie was a beloved mother and grandmother. Her daughters Judy Goff, Rhedas Taylor and sons Thomas and Terry M. Goff have preceded her in death, as well as a granddaughter and grandson, Erica and Michael Goff, and a son-in-law, Robert Taylor.

Those left to cherish her memory are her surviving children, a son, Gilbert Goff and his wife, Kathy, of Eccles, Ricky Goff of Beckley, Pamela Tilley and her husband, James, of Waynesboro, VA, and Donna Wood and her husband, Kenneth, of Broadway, VA; there are twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Azie will be sadly and deeply missed by all.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 11th, at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Earl Snuffer will be officiating. Azie will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be: Kenneth Wood, James Tilley, Scottie and Stacy Taylor, and Angel Wood.

Cora Buchanan Halsey

Heaven has a new angel. Cora Buchanan Halsey went home to be with our Lord, Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House of Beckley, West Virginia. She was loved by her family, neighbors, and friends for 102 and a half years; kept house by herself; making pickles two weeks ago — active and alert until a week ago, going strong. 

Cora was born February 4, 1911, in Wyoming County, WV.

She was the daughter of the late Tom and Louisa Buchanan.

She loved her family and friends; her favorite pastime was cooking for family and friends. She especially loved spending time with her granddaughters, Tammie and Vanessa, and talking to her sister Marie on the phone multiple times of the day.

She is survived by her daughter Barbara Hager and her husband Jerry of Pineville, W.Va.; Sandy (Sandra) Akers and her husband Bill of Saraland, Ala.; two granddaughters, Tammie Hager-Melek and her husband Steve of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; Vanessa Hager of Pineville, W.Va.; one sister Marie Stiles of Glen Fork, W.Va.; one brother Jackie Buchanan and wife Linda of Whitesville, W.Va.; Alex Akers whom she considered to be her great-grandson, his mother Stephanie Adams of Pineville, W.Va.; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and dear neighbors, Gene, Freda and Jeff Brewer.

In addition to her parents, Cora is preceded in death by her husband, Cash Walter Halsey, brothers Emmett, Thomas Harding, Jack and Howell Buchanan, her sisters Sadie Olson, Pearl Halsey, Ethel Johnson, Sylvia Hurt, Eva Halsey, Ada Carroll, Ruby Munsey, Lucy Cook and Billie Mathena.

Friends may visit with the family Friday, August 9, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and additionally from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. to celebrate her life and legacy at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, West Virginia. Services will be conducted by Elder Bryce Phillips and Rev. Keith Reed. Burial will follow at the Halsey-Brooks Family Cemetery at Coon Fork, West Virginia. Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Pastor John Ed Lilly, 67, of Cool Ridge passed away at home after a short illness. He went to his heavenly home on Thursday, August 8, 2013.

Born November 26, 1945, he was the son of the late Robert Lilly and Helen Hatcher Lilly of Cool Ridge.

John was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Earlyn Lilly, and sister, Jean Ann Lilly.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen Mae Phillips Lilly; two daughters, Jennifer E. Lilly-Muktar, husband AbdelBagi, of Beckley, and Janel Ellen Lilly, of Cool Ridge. John was the proud grandfather of Muktar, Haju, and Ryan Muktar of Beckley. His sister, Thelma Lilly Okes, husband Tom, of Cool Ridge.

John Ed was a coal miner for approximately 10 years in various mines of southern WV. He then became a school bus driver for another 10 years with the Raleigh County Board of Education.

John’s passion was in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. His goal was for all who heard him to come to know his Lord. John was the pastor at Mountain Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Odd, WV, for 20 years. He was currently the pastor at Clifftop Missionary Baptist Church, Beaver, WV, for the last 6 years. His love for his congregation was a prime example of serving the Lord.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2013, at Clifftop Baptist Church in Beaver with Mr. Warren Shrewsbury officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday Evening at the church. Burial will follow at the Earlyn Phillips Family Cemetery on Blue Jay Six Road in Cool Ridge. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Gillie Bethleen McCoy

RENICK — Gillie Bethleen McCoy, 89, of Renick, WV, went to be with the Lord Thursday, August 8, 2013. She was born Sept. 4, 1923, and lived all her life on Leonard Cordova Road, Spring Creek, WV.

What a special day it was nearly 90 years ago when God gave you life and, through you, gave us life. Although hearts are broken, we are thankful for the time we had to share with our mother. Throughout these years, mom devoted her life to caring for those she loved. She dedicated her life early to the Lord; her door was open and a meal prepared for all who came.

Bethleen was the daughter of the late George and Lula Bell Baldwin Lewis and was raised by her grandparents Frank and Mary Crouse Lewis.

Other than her parents and grandparents she was preceded in death by Tom McCoy, her husband of 67 years, stepmother Ethel Crane Lewis, daughter-in-law Peggy, grandson Keith, brothers James, Lacy, Melvin, Hobert, Orville, Harry, Henry and a sister, Lula Bell.

Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Eveleenia (Pastor Marshall Cochran), sons Hobert (Mickey), Eugene (Nadine), Darrell, Dale (companion Anna Bell), sisters Wanda (Don), Mary (Wilburn) brothers Sidney, Bradford, Robert, sister-in-law Samuella, 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Frankford with Rev. Marshall Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellis Chapel Cemetery, Brushy Flat.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

Florence Ann Morris McQueen

PAGE — Florence Ann Morris McQueen, 83, of Page, WV, died on Thursday, August 8, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.

Born October 30, 1929, at Montgomery, WV, she was the daughter of the late Eugene R. and Yula Faye Robinson Morris.

Mrs. McQueen was a member of the Page Church of God. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Eddie B. McQueen; sisters, Norma Hall, Hazel McClanahan, and Julia Ramsey; and brothers, Eugene Morris and Robert Morris, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Gail Robertson of Fayetteville, Debbie Kay Butner of Oak Hill and Beverly A. Hayes of Virginia; sisters, Betty Griffiis of Indiana, Edna Shrewsbury of Virginia, Virginia Phillips of Oak Hill and Gloria Mooney of Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Monday, August 12, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Delmas Wolfe and Pastor Jim Elmore officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Anna Fontana Payne

Our devoted wife, mother and sister, Anna Fontana Payne, 85, of Beckley, WV, left this world for a better place on Thursday, August 8, 2013, at Heartland of Beckley, where she had been a resident for six years.

Born August 21, 1927, at Herndon, WV, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Maria Massara Fontana.

Anna was a retired supervisor for Hills Department Store in Beckley.

A graduate of Mount Hope High School, she lived most of her life in Mount Hope and was a member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church.

Anna's husband, Lester Payne, preceded her in death in 1960. She was also preceded by six brothers, Lee Fontana, Mike Fontana, Pat Fontana, Nick Fontana, Thomas Fontana and Johnny Fontana, and three sisters, Mary Benedetto, Josephine Pishner and Camilla Spadaro.

Survivors include one daughter, Rita A. Schreiber and husband, Richard, of Richmond, VA; one son, Theodore E. Payne and wife, Pamela, of Morris Plains, NJ; one brother, James Fontana of Columbia, PA; three sisters, Esther Chamberlain of Vancouver, WA, Carolyn Troitino of Mount Hope and Eleanor Fontana of Mount Hope; three grandchildren, Catherine Schreiber, Alex Payne and wife, Mary, and James Schreiber; and several nieces and nephews.

In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Payne was cremated. Her cremains will be interred with her husband Lester at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Rev. Richard C. Allen officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

Floral tributes will be accepted; however, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1601 Second Avenue, Charleston, WV 25387.

James ‘Jim’ McKinley Richmond Jr.

James “Jim” McKinley Richmond Jr., age 39, of Crab Orchard, WV, passed away at his home with his wife Tina by his side on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, following a long illness.

Born on January 25, 1974, in Beckley, WV, he was the son of Carol Ossmann Richmond of MacArthur, WV. He was also the son of the late James M. Richmond Sr. and his wife Deanna Richmond of Bolt, WV.

Jim was a former construction worker, and had lived at Crab Orchard for most of his life. He grew up at Crab Orchard and had spent a lot of his time on Freezeland Mountain. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. His late father was his best friend.

Survivors include his wife Tina Sears Richmond and son Cody Sears of Crab Orchard, a brother, Bill Richmond of MacArthur, Stepbrothers, Craig Cobb of Beckley, Thomas Cobb of Seymour, Tennessee, and a stepsister, Lori Lester of Beckley. His mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jean and Curtis Sears of Crab Orchard, WV. Five nephews including two special nephews, Bobby Sears and Dylan Lester, Five nieces, including special nieces, Tiffany and Nikki Lively. A sister-in-law Sherry Lively and Bill, and a brother-in-law Curtis Sears and wife Angela. Two special aunts, Aunt Rachel and Aunt Sharon. Jim also had many friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Chris Waddell officiating. Burial will follow at the Richmond Cemetery at Freezeland Mountain, WV.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Sunday.
