Allaine Rae Allen Arbaugh

Allaine Rae Allen Arbaugh, age 85, of Raleigh, WV, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House.

Born on February 17, 1928, in Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late Charles Allen and Cora Brogan Allen.

Mrs. Arbaugh was a retired employee for the Raleigh County Board of Education, where she served as a cook for Stratton Junior High School, and last from Shady Spring Elementary School.

She attended the Raleigh Baptist Church, and had made Raleigh her home for most of her life.

Mrs. Arbaugh was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Arbaugh, by brothers, Sidney, Claude, Lee, C.F. “Jake,” and John Allen, and by sisters Bertha Gill, Juanita Boley, Goldie Lewis, and Edith Vest.

Survivors include her children, Roy I. Arbaugh and his wife Brenda of Castalian Springs, TN, Donna Harmon and her husband William of Daniels, Diane May and her husband David of Sevierville, TN, Becky Arbaugh of Beckley, and Lora Jarrell and her husband Tim of Rock Hill, SC.

A brother, Ernest “Rusty” Allen of Shady Spring, and a sister Lorraine Lacek of Daniels.

14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at 8 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Allen officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 7 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Tammy Sue Blankenship

GILBERT — Tammy Sue Blankenship, 43, of Gilbert died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2012.

Funeral will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Rev. Ronnie Blankenship officiating. To honor her wishes she will be cremated. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

James H. Blume Sr.

FOREST HILL — James H. Blume, Sr., age 79, had his faith turned into sight when he departed this life and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday morning, September 1, 2013. Jim died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Forest Hill, West Virginia.

Born at Lookout, West Virginia, April 7, 1934, Jim moved to Forest Hill at age 12. He graduated from Forest Hill High School in 1953. He then joined the United States Navy, serving on the carrier USS Valley Forge, and was honorably discharged in September 1958.

Returning to Hinton, Jim settled into family life with his high school sweetheart, Emma “Pat” Tilley, whom he married on December 9, 1954. He began working in sales at the O.R. Grimmett Motor Company, then moved to Brown Tractor, Inc., the local Massey Ferguson dealer located at Willowwood. Jim eventually bought the franchise, moved it to Forest Hill, and grew it into one of the largest and most successful agricultural businesses in West Virginia. During this time, he also worked in several other businesses, providing many services to the residents of Summers County and surrounding areas. He was a charter member of both the Hinton Jaycees and the Summers County Farm Bureau.

Jim was a great athlete in his day, being a key member of his beloved Forest Hill High School basketball and baseball teams. Committed to giving back to the community through sports, Jim was involved for many seasons coaching basketball, baseball and football.

Jim was elected Sheriff of Summers County in November 1980, and served two terms from January 1981 through December 1988. Shortly after, he accepted a position as a Field Auditor for the Treasurer for the State of West Virginia, which he continued to hold at the time of his death.

Jim strove to live out his Christian faith. He was an active and faithful member of Countryside Baptist Church in Forest Hill.

Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert of Crystal River, FL, and Basil of Fayette County, as well as his dearly loved son-in-law, William “Willie” Shank.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Emma “Pat” Tilley Blume. Three children, Dr. James H. Blume, Jr., and wife Sally of Forest Hill, Cathy Elizabeth Shank of Forest Hill and Paul A. Blume and wife Robin of Fairdale, WV. Eleven grandchildren, James H. “Jamie” Blume and wife Melanie, Chris Blume and wife Tiffany, Mindy, Alandra, Stephanie, Bryanna, David, Peyton and Bria Blume and Nicole and Amber Harvey. Three great-grandchildren, Jake, Natalie and Emma Blume.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Brother James L. Jones officiating. Private interment ceremony will be held at the family cemetery near Forest Hill. Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Chris, Jamie and David Blume, Tommy Harvey, Gary Browning, Charlie Fleshman, Bill Jeffries and Ricky Ford. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Roop, Bill Mitchell, Conrad Graham, Paul Blankenship, Tom and Elmer Wykle, Ferrell Burdette and James Ford.

James Mason Cockerham

PETERSTOWN — James Mason Cockerham, 90, of Peterstown, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2013.

Glen Lee Cook

With his family by his side, Glen Lee Cook, 71, of Soak Creek, went to be with the Lord on August 31, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House after an extended illness.

Glen was born in Beckley on July 30, 1942, to the late William L. Cook, Sr., and Lillie Howerton Cook Rakes.

A retired coal miner from Slab Fork Coal Company, Glen loved to hunt, fish, enjoyed watching the Mountaineers and spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish his memory are Glen’s sons, William Cook and wife Michele of Shady Spring, Brian Cook and wife Brandy of Beaver; grandchildren, Shannon Blevins and husband Greg of Beckley, Belinda Godby and husband Dustin of Cool Ridge, Grant Joynes of Beaver; great-grandchild, Madison Blevins of Beckley; brothers, Larry Cook and wife Rachel of Coal City, William Cook, JR, of Washington, D.C.; sister, Marquita Richmond and husband Joe of Crab Orchard; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home with Rev. Kenny Sauder officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Patsy Ann Gray Massey Keaton

HINTON — Patsy Ann Gray Massey Keaton, 66, of Tug Creek, Hinton, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born June 6, 1947, at Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Willard G. and Alice F. Bowles Gray.

Patsy was a 1965 Hinton High School graduate and a former driver for the Hinton Taxi Company. She loved the Lord and was of the Baptist faith.

Patsy was a lifelong resident of Summers County who loved her family dearly. She was always friendly to others and willing to help in any way she could.

Other than her parents she is preceded in death by first husband, Steve Massey; second husband, Dewey Keaton; and one nephew, Christopher Gray.

Those left to cherish her memory include four children, Mike Massey and wife Patty of Front Royal, VA, Prescilla Blankenship of Tug Creek, Roger Massey of Tug Creek, Becky Weiss and husband Jimmy of Nimitz; five grandchildren, Michael Massey, Heather Graham, Joshua Miller, Cory Miller, Roger Massey; one great-granddaughter, Jasmine Monroe; one sister, Mary Cales of Pembroke, VA; two brothers, Jimmy Gray of Tug Creek and Curtis Gray and wife Dottie of Hinton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel. Burial will follow in the Fox Cemetery at Brooks. Friends may call from 6 to 8 Wednesday at the funeral parlors. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Robert Dean ‘Spiderman’ Manning

SCARBRO — Robert Dean “Spiderman” Manning, age 54, of Scarbro, WV, died on Saturday, August 31, 2013, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Born December 16, 1958, in Charleston, WV, he was the son of Charles Robert and Ina Pearl Massey Manning of Scarbro, WV.

Robert was a disabled coal miner, was a NASCAR fanatic, WVU football fan and animal lover. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Bailey and Robin Manning, by a niece, Rachel Meadows, and brother-in-law, Ted Lively.

Surviving are his wife, Linda D. Garrett Manning of Scarbro, one brother, Jeff Manning and his wife Sherry of Fayetteville, WV, three sisters, Linda Lively of Shady Spring, WV, Brinda Willis and husband Bill of Edmond, WV, and Sandra Comer and her husband Frank of Oak Hill, WV.

Also surviving are his father-in-law, James Garrett of Oak Hill, WV, his mother-in-law Dimmie Warden of Oak Hill, WV, brother-in-law, Carl Garrett and his wife Cyndi, and a sister-in-law, Joyce Bragg and her husband Pete of Fayetteville, WV, and a niece Amber Treadway. He is also survived by aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Lum Toney and Pastor L.T. Jordan officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

As per his wishes Robert will be cremated following services and his ashes will be buried in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV.

Emory Coye ‘Jack’ Maxwell

SPEEDWAY — Emory Coye “Jack” Maxwell went to be with his Lord and Savior at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at the age of 84.

Jack was born May 1, 1929, at Stotesbury; he was the son of the late Noah John and Evelyn Ayers Maxwell.

Jack served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He earned a Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars, United Nations Service Medal and he declined to accept a Purple Heart Medal for his injuries.

After the military he moved with his family to Bensalem, PA, where he was employed by Patterson Parchment Paper Company.

Jack married his loving wife Maxine in 1962 and was blessed with two children Emory and Lora Ann.

He moved to West Virginia in 1982 and retired from Celanese Corporation in Narrows, Virginia, in 1992. Jack received a precious gift of a heart transplant in April of 1995.

After his transplant he rode in the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Bike-a-thon sponsored by Painters Chapel United Methodist Church of which he was a member. Over an eight-year period he rode 200-plus miles and raised approximately Ten Thousand Dollars.

He enjoyed the Thursday night visitation program with Painters Chapel. Jack was also a big supporter of Bible in the Schools program.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Claude and his wife June.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 51 years, Maggie “Maxine” Gunter Maxwell; Children Emory Maxwell and wife Cami of Speedway and Lora Ann Alvis and husband Russ of Princeton; Three grandsons whom he adored: Adam Casey Maxwell, Zachary Maxwell Alvis and Sean Emory Maxwell; Siblings Gene Maxwell and wife Adeline of Ocala, FL, Dale Maxwell and wife Mary Lou of Levittown, PA, Bob Maxwell and wife Bea of Ocala, FL, Dorothy Ann Hinde and husband Ed of Ocala, FL; A host of loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Jack Maxwell will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Randy Sargent and Eddie Via  as speakers. Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery in Athens and military honors given under the direction of the Mercer County Honor Guard.

Friends may visit with the family Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
