RONCEVERTE — Hazle C. Walton, 89, of Ronceverte, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte surrounded by his loving family. He joined the circle of those who preceded him in death, his beloved daughter, Dede, his parents, Floyd and Josie Walton; sister, Hughie Jones; brothers, Tommy, Glen, Basil (Tub), Johnny, Elmer, Guy Bell. Hazle was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Drennen, W.Va., but spent the majority of his life in Greenbrier County. He married his childhood sweetheart Colleen Bennett July 9, 1945, and they just recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Hazle went to work for Columbia Gas in January, 1948 and retired from Mountaineer Gas after 36 years of service in 1984. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a charter member of the Fairlea Ruritan Club. He and Colleen are charter members of First Baptist Church of Fairlea. Hazle filled many positions in the church over the years — deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher, trustee and song leader to name a few. He was known to be hard working, very generous, caring and was always available to lend a helping hand.

Hazle served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a combat crewman aboard the B-17 Flying Fortress. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Hazle and Colleen raised an army of six children with love and care. Their home was always open to friends and family and was a gathering place for kids for decades. The children are Eddie Walton (Sandie) of Fairlea, Sandi Whitaker (Ron) of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Dede Walton (deceased), Shawn Walton of Ronceverte, Jeff Walton (Deanna) of Ronceverte, Darla Fisher (Mike) of Frankford. Grandchildren are Russell Walton (Cindy), Robin Walton, Ron Whitaker (Anita), Lisa Whitaker, Dudley Walton, Drew Walton, Jennifer Walton, Brittany Fisher, Jason Fisher and great-grandchildren, Joseph and Shane Walton, Adrianna Shockley, Logan Whittaker and Nora Wilburn.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Fairlea. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. until service begins at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Ann Edwards Scholarship Fund or the Ronceverte Public Library.
