HINTON — Rebecca June Adkins, 61, of Hinton, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013.

Louise Baker, 93, of the Bowling Addition, Beckley, died Friday, August 23rd, 2013, in a Beckley hospital.

Phyllis Gail Sawyers Capps

BACKUS MOUNTAIN — Heaven has received another angel, Phyllis Gail Sawyers Capps, age 59, of Jasper, Ala., went on to be with Jesus on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013.

Born March 2, 1954, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, she was the daughter of Charles “Cotton” Sawyers and Betty Jane Wenger Sawyers of Backus Mountain.

Phyllis was always laughing and having fun and was friends with everyone. Phyllis had worked as a maintenance administrator for A.T.& T. She was also a graduate of Meadow Bridge High School.

In addition to her parents, those left behind to cherish her memory include her husband, Paul G. Capps of Jasper, Ala.; a sister, Vickie Zickafoose and husband, L.A. of Backus Mountain; two brothers, Darrell Sawyers of Schaumburg, Ill. and Dale Sawyers of Backus Mountain; four nephews, Charles Sawyers and wife, Kathy of L.I.T.H., Ill., Brian Sawyers of Schaumburg, Ill., Eric Sawyers and wife, Jennifer of Layland and Jason Zickafoose and friend Kristen of Backus Mountain; one niece, Amy Zickafoose and friend, Matt of Natural Bridge, Va.

Friends may gather with the family on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle. The body will then go back to New Horizon Funeral Home at Dora, Ala. and be buried at New Horizon Cemetery in Dora, Ala.

West Virginia visitation will be conducted by Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle.

Anna Maye Comer Collins

OAK HILL — Anna Maye Comer Collins , 92, of Oak Hill, died on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a brief illness.

Born November 10, 1920, at Wikle, Monroe County, W.Va. she was the daughter of the late William Arch and Emily Annie Miller Comer. As a preschooler she moved with her family to Beckley, where she was raised and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1938.

Following World War II, Maye married Francis Dewey Collins in 1946. Together they owned and operated Collins Television and Radio on Main Street in Oak Hill for 28 years. In 1963 they became members of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church where Maye was active in the Revecca Bible Class and the Women’s 3F Groups. She had a life long interest in sewing, quilting and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey “Buzz” Collins in 1993; a brother, Harry Estel Comer in 2012; and two sisters, Pauline Velma Lewis in 1980 and Virginia Helen Comer in 2006.

Survivors include two nieces, Carol Ann Zizelman of Rockford, Ohio and Jane Ellen Comer of West Palm Beach, Fla. and one nephew, Richard Lewis of Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by two sister-in-law, Bonnie Nichols of Beaver Creek, Ohio and Betty Carter of Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Dr. Charles D. Miller officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call two hours prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Richard Lewis, Ken Zizelman, David Doner, Carla Frank, Lee Ann Frank and Jim Simple with Joe Mackey honorary pallbearer.

Helen V. Coste

HINTON — Helen V. Coste, 92, formerly of Hinton, died Saturday, August 24, 2013, at her home in Lewisburg. 

Born October 2, 1920, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Lula M. Jones also of Hinton. 

Mrs. Coste together with her husband Jim were pioneers in the cable television industry, having built one of the first systems in the United States at Hinton in 1953. She was an active participant in the business until it was sold in 1988.  

Mrs. Coste was a successful businesswoman in her own right as she established Helen’s Antique and gift shop which was located on the second floor of the Hinton Television Corporation building on Temple Street. After moving to Lewisburg she opened and ran the gift shop at the Greenbrier Valley Airport and later moved her business to Helen’s Antiques and Gifts on Washington Street.

Mrs. Coste was very active and held various offices in the New River Travel Council which was established to promote tourism in the Tri-County area of Summers, Raleigh and Mercer.

Helen was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church and for many years was very active in the Catholic Daughters of America.

She is preceded in death by her husband James who passed away on June 3, 1996.

Survivors include their three children, Lynda Coste Pellegrin of Morgantown, Regina Ann Coste of Newport News, Va. and James V.  Costa of Talcott; grandchildren Helen Mary Hathaway of Spottswood, Va., Christopher E. Honaker of Morgantown, Larry East Coste of Cincinnati, Ohio and Martin James Coste Konkel of Richmond, Va. There are two great granddaughter Olivia Katelyn Hathaway of Spottswood, Va. and Amber E. Coste of Raleigh, N.C. Nieces include Mary Ellen Honaker of Hnton, Hildred Allard, Marsha Louise Schmidt, Elaine Burk Cerda, Judy Jo Scudiere and Janna Scudiere. Nephews include John Providenti, Doug Jones and Allen Houchins.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton with Father Rey Landicho as celebrant. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 noon on Wednesday at the church. Rite of Committal will be in the Coste Family Crypt at Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton.

Pallbearers will be James Costa, Christopher Honaker, Larry E. Coste, Nathan Hathaway, Martin Konkel, Gary Gurganus and Robert B. Holt, Col. Ret

William Goodson

FAYETTEVILLE — William Herman Goodson, 68, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center.

Born on December 13, 1944, at Hawks Nest, he was the son of the late Herman and Mary Perdue Goodson.

Mr. Goodson was a retired coal miner.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 49 years, Bessie Goodson; five children: Sam (Tina) Goodson, Farren (Barbara) Goodson, Chris (Judy) Goodson, Lesa (Lewis) McComas, and John (Melissa) Goodson; two brothers; three sisters; and six grandchildren: Atticus, Cyrus, Jessica, Raymond, Kenneth, and Fredrick.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Morris Nutter officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Kimberly Ann Norris

Kimberly Ann Norris, age 38, of Glen Morgan, passed away on Friday,  August 23, 2013.

Born on August 8, 1975, at Beckley, she was the daughter of Sandra Meador of Glen Morgan.

Kimberly was a former employee at the Little General Store, last working at Eisenhower Drive.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, David Ralph Meador Sr., and Viola Meador.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her daughter Rebecca Nichole Norris of Glen Morgan, a brother, David “Wayne” Meador and his wife Stephanie of Porterdale, Ga., a sister Pam Mills and her husband Arthur “Skeeter” Mills Jr. of Glen Morgan; five nieces, Samantha Clark and her husband Hugh “Jacky” Clark,  Sabrina Becker and her fiancé Jody Wills II,  April Sears, Brianna Meador, and Morgan Meador; a nephew, J.J. Becker; a step niece, LaShala Mills and her fiancé Josh Eagle; two step nephews, Tyler and Jonathan Mills; a great nephew, Tristan Clark; a step great nephew, Trey Von Eagle, a step great niece, Chay–Leigh Eagle, and a life long friend, Pamela Bailey.

A memorial service will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel on Wednesday August 28, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Fred Lovell officiating.  Friends may visit with the family 30 minutes prior to the services on Wednesday.

Hester Rose Pack

Hester Rose Pack, age 54 of Bradley, passed away at Raleigh General Hospital on Sunday, August 25, 2013.

Born on February 19, 1959, at Logan, she was the daughter of Carolyn Adkins Canterbury of Whitman Creek, and the late Raymond Canterbury.

Mrs. Pack was a homemaker, and was a retired hairdresser and electronic technician. She was of the Church of God faith and had made her home at Bradley for the past 8 years.

She loved spending time with family and caring for her dog.

Mrs. Pack was preceded in death by her daughter, Keisha Cull and by a brother Buddy Canterbury.

Surviving are her husband, Greg Pack; a brother Kenneth Canterbury and his wife Terry of Chapmanville; two grandsons, Clifford Lee and William Chase Cull.

Nephews Kenny Canterbury, and Logan and Landyn Pack, several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and father-in-law and mother-in-law,  Frank and Janie Pack of Cool Ridge a brother-in-law, Kenneth Pack of Cool Ridge.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Gary Ickes officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 5:30 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.

Barbara Phillips

Barbara Phillips, 71, of Pineville, departed her earthly life, Sunday, August 25, 2013, at her residence following a short illness.

Born August 5, 1942, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Ray Jenkins and Glenna Cook Jenkins.

Barbara had attended the Pineville Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed sewing, collecting cook books and recipes, raising her children and being with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jimmy Phillips in December 2010

Survivors include two sons, James Phillips of McClean, Va. and Stephen Phillips and his wife, Amanda of Pineville; a daughter, Tammy Hunt and her husband, Chris of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Jim Jenkins and his wife, Vivian of Princeton and Bobby Jenkins and his wife, Lynn of Pineville; a sister, Betty England of Pineville

She is also survived by two grandchildren, Lauren and Jackson Hunt and several nieces and nephews. A special nephew, Mike Johnson

At her request, there will be no services.

Peggy Jean Pridemore

ANSTED — Peggy Jean Pridemore, 82, of Ansted, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Ansted Center, following a long illness.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Hazle C. Walton

RONCEVERTE — Hazle C. Walton, 89, of Ronceverte, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte surrounded by his loving family. He joined the circle of those who preceded him in death, his beloved daughter, Dede, his parents, Floyd and Josie Walton; sister, Hughie Jones; brothers, Tommy, Glen, Basil (Tub), Johnny, Elmer, Guy Bell. Hazle was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Drennen, W.Va., but spent the majority of his life in Greenbrier County. He married his childhood sweetheart Colleen Bennett July 9, 1945, and they just recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Hazle went to work for Columbia Gas in January, 1948 and retired from Mountaineer Gas after 36 years of service in 1984. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a charter member of the Fairlea Ruritan Club. He and Colleen are charter members of First Baptist Church of Fairlea. Hazle filled many positions in the church over the years — deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher, trustee and song leader to name a few. He was known to be hard working, very generous, caring and was always available to lend a helping hand.

Hazle served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a combat crewman aboard the B-17 Flying Fortress. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Hazle and Colleen raised an army of six children with love and care. Their home was always open to friends and family and was a gathering place for kids for decades. The children are Eddie Walton (Sandie) of Fairlea, Sandi Whitaker (Ron) of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Dede Walton (deceased), Shawn Walton of Ronceverte, Jeff Walton (Deanna) of Ronceverte, Darla Fisher (Mike) of Frankford. Grandchildren are Russell Walton (Cindy), Robin Walton, Ron Whitaker (Anita), Lisa Whitaker, Dudley Walton, Drew Walton, Jennifer Walton, Brittany Fisher, Jason Fisher and great-grandchildren, Joseph and Shane Walton, Adrianna Shockley, Logan Whittaker and Nora Wilburn.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Fairlea. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. until service begins at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Ann Edwards Scholarship Fund or the Ronceverte Public Library.
