Harry Alan Amann

KEGLEY — Harry Alan Amann, 70, of Kegley, passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013.

Alex ‘Lee’ Brooks

ASBURY — Alex “Lee” Brooks of Asbury, formerly of Pence Springs, Baltimore, Md., and West Palm Beach, Fla., passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013, following a long illness of black lung.

Lee was born June 16, 1939, at Alderson. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Griffith Creek Baptist Church near Alderson.

Lee retired from Vecellio and Grogan Inc. in Beckley after many years of service as a heavy equipment operator. He was a former member of the United Steel Workers Union and the U.M.W.A Union, Districts 17 and 29. He was a U.S. Army Veteran stationed at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. - Hq Co USA Gar (7021) HDW and held the rank of SP4. Lee serviced his country which he dearly loved from 1962 to 1964 during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0200 and a former Assistant Fire Chief for about 17 years with the Talcott Volunteer Fire Department.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marlin “Kid George” Brooks in 1987 and Ronald Brooks in 1994, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Brooks, in 2003.

Survivors include one grandson which he loved and was crazy about, “PaPa’s Little Man,” Jarrod Piner of Roanoke, Va.; three brothers, Ray Brooks of Beckley, Jerry Brooks of Alderson and Paul Brooks of Asbury; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. He was also survived by special friends: Delmore Highlander and Tom Burns, and caregiver, Faye Carter.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, at Griffiths Creek Baptist Chapel with Pastor Randy Burdette officiating. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Cemetery at Alderson.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors.

Pallbearers will be David Carter, Hoppie Hopkins, Roger Harris, Tom Burns, Sheldon Carter, Little Sheldon Carter, and Leonard Carter will serve as honorary pallbearers.

BEVERLY — Easter Marie Cook, 85, a native of Skelton, formerly of Marlinton, died Aug. 21, 2013.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale, with Pastor Brian Headley officiating. Burial will follow in the Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.

Loren Jackson Fox Sr.

OAK HILL — Loren Jackson Fox Sr., 87, of Oak Hill, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013.

At his request, his body has been donated to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Oak Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Bryan Knight and Pastor David White officiating.

Brenda Pricilla Vint Johnson

LYNCO — Brenda Pricilla Vint Johnson, 71, of Lynco, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco. Howard Eugene Lane

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Howard Eugene Lane, 90, of Knoxville, formerly of Beckley, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, August 21, 2013.

He was born April 10, 1923, in White Pine, Tenn., to the late Herbert Terrell and Ethel Haun Lane. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Hazel Lane, Mary Lane Smith, Jeannie Carey; brothers, J. W. Lane and Terrell Lane.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Louise Shoemake Lane; children, Cindy Morse of Knoxville, David Lane (Kathy) of Knoxville; grandchildren, Becca (Scott Mills) Lane of Asheville, N.C.; Andy Lane of Knoxville, Katie Morese of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Adam Morse of Asheville, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Ruby Lane and Banyan Mills of Asheville, N.C. The greatest joys in Howard’s life were the times he gathered with family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Lane attended White Pine High School and played football on the 1936 championship team. He volunteered to join the Marine Corps in December of 1942 and was called to active duty in March of 1943. He served in the Pacific Theatre of World War II and returned to the states to complete his duty in the military police located in Charleston, S.C. Howard was discharged in March of 1946.

He worked with the Ralph E. Mills Company for 14 years serving as superintendent on road construction projects before joining Vecellio and Grogan, Inc., of Beckley, where he worked from 1961 to 1994. He served as Vice-President of Field Operations, managing over one half billion dollars in projects until his retirement in 1994. While living in Beckley, Howard became a member of First Baptist Church, where he faithfully served in the bus ministry for nearly 20 years.

Mr. Lane and his wife, Betty, returned to Tennessee in 1998, spending the first eight  years in Dandridge, Tenn., before moving to Knoxville.

Family and friends will meet 5 p.m. Sunday at Cofer Cemetery, Meigs County, Tenn., for a graveside service with The Reverend Dr. Bryan Wilson officiating.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Salvation Army.

Gary Roger McCoy

Gary Roger McCoy, 71, of Sophia, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013.

Beecher Meadows Jr.

Beecher Meadows Jr., 92, died on August 21, 2013 at his Rolling Meadows Farm on Little Bluestone. He was born August 6, 1921 in Hinton, WV to the late Beecher and Mary Lilly Meadows.

He worked at Carnegie Steel in Charleston and was drafted into the military on August 19, 1943. He served in the 9th Army Corps of Engineers until November 21, 1945. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, the Bronze Star and the World War II Service Medal.

After the military Beecher worked several jobs including farm labor for his nephew David Wallace, the WV Dept. of Highways and his farm on Little Bluestone. He loved farming, hunting, football and his family. He attended Bluestone Baptist Church. Beecher was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Besides his parents, Beecher was preceded in death by his brothers, Darrh, David, Donal, Doan and Finley, and sisters, Muriel Beane, Macie Day, Maude Frye, Mamie Lilly, Opal Bennett, Mattie Meador and Pauline Ballard.

Beecher is survived by his wife of 65 years, Erma Crotty Meadows; daughters, Linda Tickle of South Charleston and Mary Newsome and husband Rick of Jumping Branch; a former son in law, Steve Tickle; grandson, Richard Boda Newsome of Jumping Branch; granddaughters, Amy Tickle of South Charleston, Sara Tickle of Blacksburg, VA, Olivia Newsome of Pikeville, KY and Rebecca Newsome of Morgantown; sister in law, Theresia Meadows of Charleston; special neighbors and friends, Wilma Rodes O’Brian, Benny Basham, Jon and Maura Lindbergh and Susie Meadows and four very loved children, Anne and “Milo” Lindbergh and Claire and Nathan Fox.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Bluestone Baptist Church in Jumping Branch with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call Friday from 6-9 P.M. at the Bluestone Baptist Church and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Pallbearers: Mark Rosenquist, Glen O’Neil, David Wallace, John Jones, Richard Boda Newsome and Jon Lindbergh.

Honorary pallbearers: Richard T. Newsome, Eddie Rosenquist, Curtis Meador, Donald and Greg Meadows.

George Harold Meadows

KANAWHA CITY — George Harold Meadows of Kanawha City, in his home and surrounded by family, closed his eyes and departed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, after a short illness, bound for a rendezvous with his heavenly Father.

Born on April 2, 1928, he was 85 years old at his time of passing.

A C&O Railroad conductor for more than 36 years, Meadows served his country honorably during World War ll and in the Korean War in the United States Navy.

Having spent most of his life in and around the greater Sylvester, W.Va., (Boone County) area, the community knew George as a man of honesty, fairness and kindness.

A lover of ‘hard work’ and doing things the ‘right way,’ he enjoyed every moment life offered; for George, days that began and ended with a long walk on the treadmill were better than days that did not. A true railroader, George knew someone everywhere he went, without fail.

His father, John Harry Meadows, and mother, Vennie Victoria Meadows, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pollyanna; son, G.H. and wife Sandy; daughter, Beth and husband Jim; grandchildren, T.J. and wife Amanda; Justin and wife Lindsey; Cory; and Crista; great-grandchildren, Maci and Cohen; brothers, Barton Meadows and Don Meadows; and sister, Mary Alice Fant.

Friends may join the family to celebrate George’s life on Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Sylvester Baptist Church. A funeral service will immediately follow in the church sanctuary at 1 p.m. Internment will occur at Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, W.Va., with military graveside rites by Madison VFW Post #5578. The Rev. David Minturn will officiate and Rev. Ricky Peters will sing, while Armstrong Funeral Home will carry out arrangements.

Agnes Mills

Agnes Mills, 90, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013.

Betty Geraldine Robinson

HILLDALE — Betty Geraldine Robinson, 85, of Hilldale, formerly of Spencer, died Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

Born May 3, 1928, at Fellowsville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Dorsey and Flora White Matlick.

Mrs. Robinson was a retired clerk from the West Virginia Department of Highways. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Spencer and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Ray Robinson, and also by infant twins, Michael and Kathy Robinson; two brothers, Walter and Charles Matlick, and one sister, Mary Ellen Matlick.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Harvey and husband Tom of Pence Springs; two grandchildren, Rich Lytle and wife Cheri of Charlotte, N.C., and Krista Fix and husband Robbie of Princeton; five great-grandchildren, Colton, Cade, Cambel, Luke and Abbey. A stepgrandson, Christian Harvey of Clarksburg; one brother, John Matlick of Oregon; and one sister, Wanita Matlick Coban of Maryland.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center as well as her personal caregivers for their love and support shown to Betty during her illness.

It was Betty’s wish to be cremated.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Rev. Ken Price officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Maplewood Cemetery at Kingwood at a later date.

Ronnie Lee Taylor

ROANOKE, Va. — Ronnie Lee Taylor, 67, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Va.

Ronnie was born January 9, 1946, in Beckley, to the late Avery Walter and Gladys Mae Robertson Taylor.

Ronnie was a retired exterminator for Orkin.

Survivors include his wife, Monica Ann of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Rhonda Bennett and husband John of Warrenton, Va.; son, Avery Taylor and his wife Angel of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Brady Taylor, Cole Taylor, Chase Bennett and Ian Bennett; sisters, Brenda Lilly and companion Jerry Showalter of Shady Spring and Patricia McMillion and companion Michael Smith of Beckley; brother, Charles Taylor and wife Brenda of Crab Orchard.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, with Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

Mary Ellen Davis Thompson

AIKEN, S.C. — Mrs. Mary Ellen Davis Thompson, 78, died Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2013, at Millbrook Baptist Church in Aiken, S.C., with burial at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in Forest Hill, W.Va., at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013. Friends are asked to gather at the cemetery prior to service.

Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and a member of Millbrook Baptist Church.

RONCEVERTE — Raymond J. Toothman, 91, of Ronceverte, passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013.

Deborah Ann Wade

Deborah Ann Wade, 51, of Beckley, was called to her Heavenly home on Monday, August 19, 2013.

Born in Erwin, N.C., on June 13, 1962, she was the daughter of the late Frank R. Wade Jr. and Priscilla Amos Wade.

Deborah was a 1980 graduate of Pineville High School. She was the owner of Maid Patrol and was last employed at Tamarack in Beckley. She was an avid amateur photographer which went hand in hand with her love of nature and riding Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include her daughter, Tiffany Bloodworth and her husband, Aaron, of Sylva, N.C., sister, Demetra “Dee” A. Mullins and her husband, Layne A. Mullins, of Mt Sterling, Ky., granddaughters Kaytlynne and Destiny of Sylva, N.C., and was known as “Aunt Reese” for her shared love of Reese cups with her nephew, Ryan A. Mullins of Mt Sterling, Ky.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, August 24th, at Northgate Baptist Church 301 Pinewood Drive, Beckley.



Elma Mae Whitlock

LEIVASY — Elma Mae Whitlock, 78, of Leivasy, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Greenbrier Manor, Ronceverte, following a long illness.

Born February 12, 1935, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late French Beverly and Cecil Ruby Smoot Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin “Speedy” Whitlock, a daughter Sarah Jane Whitlock, two grandsons, Andrew Lee and Tyler Austin Whitlock, three sisters, Thelma Ray, Sally McClung and Barbara Walker, and two brothers Ralph and James Smith.

She enjoyed cooking, working in her flowers and especially being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. Elma worked as a cook, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia McDonaldson (Jerry) of Crimora, Va., Sherry Ervin of Goshen, Va., and Pamula Whitlock of Leivasy; four sons, Tim (Melinda) of Leivasy, Perry (Vickie) of Quinwood, Michael (Jessie) of Brunswick, Ga., and Jerry Whitlock (Debra) of Leivasy; one sister Mary Woods; six brothers, David, Beverly, Lincoln, Jan, Edwin and Everette Smith; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, and a best friend, Charlotte Workman.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Denver Tiller officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery at Carl, with her grandsons serving as Pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday, August 24, 2013, from noon until service time at the funeral home.
