Betty J. Reed

Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” On Sunday evening, Sept. 23rd, 2012, our most cherished Betty Reed received that sweet rest following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She passed away at the Bowers Hospice House. Betty was in her 84th year.

The sixth of seven children, Betty Jean Dobbins was born on August 28th, 1928, at Blue Jay. Her parents were the late Carlos Jackson and Ida Grace Dobbins. Sisters Macie Merle Coleman, Cecilia Arminta Williams, Ceretha Mae Meador and brother James Lambert Dobbins have preceded her in death. Of her original family, her sister Geneva Richmond Light and brother Jack Dobbins and his wife, Mary Kay, all of Beckley survive. Betty was a sweet sister.

Betty’s early childhood years were spent at Cool Ridge. She was a graduate of Shady Spring High School, Class of 1945. In the late 1940s Betty was introduced to Gene Reed by her brother, Jack. Betty and Gene were married on July 19th, 1948. To this union was born a daughter, Martha Jane. Betty began a career in the banking industry in 1953. She would retire from Beckley Federal Savings and Loan with 35 years of service in 1988. Betty and Gene made their home in the Maxwell Hill community since 1968. The family would worship at the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church. Betty was a member of the “Silver Saints.” Tragically, Gene died suddenly at the age of 49 on July 16th, 1978, and now, “Oh Glad Reunion.”

In addition to the Dobbins family, Betty leaves to cherish her memory her only child, Martha Hutchinson; she was the dearest “Dodo” to her granddaughters, Lauren and Lindsay; a niece, Mary Grace Richmond of Beckley, and nephew, Jimmy Meador and his wife, Doris, of Cool Ridge also survive. When asked to reflect on her mother’s life, Martha said, “Mother was a lady.”

This Tuesday evening, Sept. 25th, at 7:30 p.m. we will remember the life of this great lady with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Ken Killen of the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until the service hour. On Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Betty will be laid to rest beside her beloved Gene at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Those wishing to attend the committal services on Wednesday are asked to meet at the mortuary by 10:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be Jim Hodges, Doug Lovell, William Perry, Duane Sellards, Jimmy Sweeney and Clark Swepstson.

Jeffrey Robinette

Jeffrey Thomas Robinette, 37, of Beckley, died Friday, September 21, 2012, at CAMC Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born April 14, 1975, in Man, W.Va., Jeff was the only child of Tommy and Bonnie Robinette.

Those preceding him in death include his maternal grandparents, Densil and Trubie Cline, and paternal grandfather, Cleve Robinette.

Left to cherish his memory, along with his parents, are his loving wife of 11 years, Kelli Booten Robinette, and their 9-year-old daughter, Morgan. Kelli and Morgan were the loves of his life, his caretakers, and his reason for fighting such a fierce battle.

Deeply loved by so many, Jeff was a role model, friend, teacher, and an inspiration. Jeff was an ordained minister, and served as the Youth Pastor at Faith Community Church, where he changed the lives of many young people. Even through fighting and overcoming leukemia, his faith never wavered. Jeff’s life was a testimony. His commitment to God and others, his creativity, and his spirit define his legacy. Despite his illness, Jeff continued to live, to love, and to laugh. His sense of humor and wit will never be forgotten, and the joy he brought into so many lives will be treasured forever.

Jeff’s favorite activities included spending time with his daughter, playing fantasy football with his wife, and cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies, or whatever team was winning. Jeff notoriously “rode the bandwagon” and was quite proud in doing so.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Haddadin for his special attention and care, Dr. Michael Craig, Dr. Mehdi Hamadani, Raleigh Regional Cancer Center, and the amazing staff of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Friends may celebrate Jeff’s life with the family on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. The memorial service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jason Lowe and Pastor Sam Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers are Brandon Bennett, William Goode, Chad Hamon, Steve New, Paul Rankin, and Keith Webb. Honorary pallbearers are Travis Booten, Joe Dobbins, James Franklin, Nick Goff, Rick Hatfield, Carl Hutchens, J.R. Robinson, and Roger Smallwood.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Morgan Robinette Trust fund, c/o BB&T, 5701 MacCorkle Ave. SE, Charleston, WV, 25304.
