Louie Vernon Ayers

Louie Vernon Ayers, 75, of Fireco, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Graveside Rites and burial will be conducted at the Tom Lilly Cemetery at Ghent, on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Randy Sadler officiating.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel.

Betty June Dilley Brammer

Betty June Dilley Brammer, age 87 of Beaver, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born at Glen Morgan, W.Va., on May 10, 1926, where she was also raised, she was the daughter of the late Dewey Brown Dilley and Goldie Mae Bachus Dilley.

Mrs. Brammer retired in 1988 after 24 years of service in the WV State Tax Department, as an accounting auditor.

She had made her home in Beaver since 1985, and was a member of the Perry Memorial United Methodist Church at Shady Spring. Mrs. Brammer was very active in the United Methodist Women, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid reader and enjoyed many arts and crafts. She also was a 1944 of graduate of Shady Spring High School, where she was the head cheerleader.

Mrs. Brammer was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Edsel Martin Brammer, who died in 1981. 

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her children: Randall Martin Brammer of Philadelphia, Pa., and Pamela Sue Brammer Ford and her husband Larry of Shady Spring; three sisters, Jean Ann Dilley Warden and her husband David of Palm Harbor, Fla.,  Patricia Sue Dilley of Glen Morgan, and  Dr. Boots Dilley of Huntington, W.Va.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Betty June Brammer on Monday, June 10, 2013, at noon at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Rev. Scott Mayberry officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Carl Argabrite, John Batchelor, Jerry Carter, Don Crook, Garland Plumley, and Pete Torrico.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perry Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1264 Shady Spring, WV, 25918 in memory of Mrs. Brammer.

Clorine Brogan

On June 7, 2013, Clorine Brogan, a coal miner’s daughter, wife of a disabled WWII veteran, mother of four, grandmother of seven, great grandmother of eight, passed and is now in heaven with loved ones and relatives who have gone on before.

Born on August 22, 1927, in the coal camp of of Krebs, W.Va., she was the daughter of William Silas Scarbro and Mary Abigail Wriston Scarbro.

The second sister of 12 children, she was affectionately called “Sis”. Mrs. Brogan was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, and three sisters. Four of those brothers having died from the Paint Creek flood of 1932.

Mrs. Brogan married Deskar Lewis Brogan on January 4, 1947. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death in April 2007.

She is survived by their children, Billie Lorraine Wood and her husband Jim of Grandview, Millard Lewis Brogan and his wife Janie of Houston, Texas, James Lee Brogan and his wife Shery of Athens, and Roger Gale Brogan of Prosperity.

Her beloved grandchildren, William Stuart Farley Jr., Lewis Scott Brogan, Kevin Patrick Farley and his wife Rebecca, Richard Warren Brogan, Nicole Brogan-Pavleck and her husband Guy, Kelley Lorraine Brogan, and Anna Gale Brogan.

Great grandchildren are Matthew Wayne Farley, Rebecca Marie Farley, Mary Abigail Farley, Noah Patrick Farley, Jacob William Farley, Niam Juliet Pavleck, and Darcy Aurora Baugh.  Soon to arrive is Rian Noelle Pavleck.

One brother, Loie Edward Scarbro of Florida, three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Her guardian angels were Terry Rojas, Rebecca Farley, Erica Ward, Martha Goble, Mary Farley, and Nikki Guest of Hospice.

Mrs. Brogan was a lifelong member of the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. George Wood officiating. Burial will follow at the Lively Cemetery at Sod, W.Va. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service time of 1 p.m.

Her grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Virginia Katherine ‘Gin’ Goddard Fitzwater 

Virginia Katherine “Gin” Goddard Fitzwater, 84, of Coal City, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013, in Louisville, Ky.

Virginia was born on April 10, 1929, in Boomer, W.Va., and returned home to Coal City in 1984 after spending many years in Flint, Mich.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Samuel Lewis Goddard Jr. and Mabel Gertrude Davis Goddard; husband, Calvin Coolidge Fitzwater Sr., son, Calvin Coolidge Fitzwater Jr.; and brother, James Owen “Boo” Goddard.

She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Stuckenborg of Louisville, Ky.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Denise Buchanan Fitzwater of Newland, N.C.; sister, Betty Mae “Ba” Goddard Fitzwater of Beckley; grandchildren, Katherine Joyner of Louisville, Ky., Rev. Chris and Lisa Fitzwater of Charlottesville, Va., and Rebecca Armes of Louisville, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Davis, Sophia, and Olivia Joyner of Louisville, Ky.; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home, with Bishop Clarence Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Myrtle Jourdan

On Wednesday, June 5th, 2013, our most cherished Myrtle Jourdan, of Arnett, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness. She was in her 79th year. 

The third of five children, Myrtle Combs was born on Nov. 20th, 1933, at Arnett. Her parents were the late Bert and Laura Cook Combs. A sister, Delcie Wills and brothers, Dexter Combs and Kenneth Nelson have preceded her in death.

Her sister, Marilyn “Sally” Parsons and her husband, Darrell of Rock Creek survive.

Myrtle was a lifelong resident of Arnett. She was a well known and well thought of postal carrier in the Arnett-Glen Daniel area for 31 years. In her leisure time she enjoyed going to yard sales. The great joy of her life in her later years was being a grandmother and great grandmother. 

While working at the Glass House on the WV Turnpike, Myrtle met a truck driver, Ottis Jourdan from Mississippi. They would marry and be blessed with two children, Michael Eugene who is married to Diana and Debra Carol. Sadly, Debra died at the age of three. Ottis died in 1997. Myrtle was the devoted “MeMaw” to Erick Jourdan and his wife, Reva and Amanda Mauller and her husband, Jon. She was the proud great grandmother of Kyleigh Jourdan and Joseph Mauller. A sister-in-law, Mary Ann Murrow survives, as well as many friends and neighbors. 

On Tuesday, June 11th, at 1 p.m. there will be a “Service of Remembrance” at the Flat Branch Baptist Church. Pastor Donnie Russell will be officiating. Myrtle will be laid to rest in the Massey Cemetery beside Ottis and Debra Carol. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Gertrude Vera Richmond McKinney

LEWISBURG — Gertrude Vera Richmond McKinney, age 94, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, at the Greenbrier Manor, in Fairlea, W.Va., where Mrs. McKinney has resided for the past year and a half. Gertrude was just days shy of reaching her 95th birthday when the Lord called her home.

Born June 25, 1918, at Judson, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Thomas Richmond and Elizabeth Boone Richmond.

Mrs. McKinney dedicated her life to caring for others. She was a caregiver for numerous family members throughout her lifetime. She worked briefly at the Hinton Hospital, Hinton, WV, and G.C. Murphy, Beckley. She spent many years living in Beaver, W.Va., prior to moving to Hinton in the nineties and then Lewisburg in 2007.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 48 years, Deward A. McKinney; sisters, Naomi Richmond Martin and Ocie D. Richmond; brothers, Harmon D. Richmond, Emmett O. Richmond, Robert J. Richmond, Lloyd L. Richmond, Othar Hobert Richmond, Forest Owen Richmond and Leonard Curtis Richmond.

Gertrude is survived by one brother, Carrington D. Richmond of Lewisburg/Clayton, W.Va.; step-granddaughters, Glenda Queen and husband Mike, Terah Peterson and husband Bill, both of Norfolk, Va.; caregivers: (nephew), Eddie and Nancy Richmond of Lewisburg; nieces, Ruth Stafford and husband H.C. of East Bank, W.Va., Roberta Meador of Roanoke, Va., Iona “Jinx” Shawver of Mansfield, Ohio; nephews, Rodney Richmond and wife Arlis of Melbourne, Fla. and Harold Richmond and wife Ann of Beckley; step-great grandchildren, Megan and Josh Queen, Teddy, Glen and Rebecca Peterson and several great great grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton, with Pastor Roger Persinger officiating. Burial will follow at the Elk Knob Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. until time of services at the funeral parlors.

Pallbearers will be Mike Falls, Bradley Falls, Mike Queen, Josh Queen, Bill Peterson and Richard Hypes.
