George O. Cales

George O. Cales, 84, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness. Born March 3, 1928, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Eunice Carl and Murphy Richmond Cales.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eunice Carl Cales, Jr., and James Melvin Cales, father-in-law, Earl L. Hellems, and mother-in-law, Mary Wallace Hellems, and brother-in-law, Jack L. (Buzzy) Hellems.

George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary June Hellems Cales; two sons, J.E. Cales of Beckley and George Steven Cales of Hinton; one daughter, Mary Pat Wickline and husband Steve of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Casey Cales and wife Terry of Shady Spring, Jacob Cales and wife Sara of Daniels, Joshua Stricklen and JoBeth Stricklen of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; three great-grandchildren, Cainan, Kylee, and Kate Cales of Shady Spring; sisters-in-law, Garnet Cales Hatcher and Glenda Hellems of Hinton; three nieces and nephews.

George was a graduate of Hinton High School and National Business College. He served two years in the Navy and worked at National Finance Company for 27 years and retired from Beneficial Finance. He was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, Moose Lodge, Beckley Masonic Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite and Beni Kedem Shrine.

Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, October 25, at the Beckley Presbyterian Church with Rev. John C. McKinnon and Rev. Janice M. Tiedeck officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Casey Cales, Jacob Cales, Joshua Stricklen, Gus Farris, Kent Hellems, Jack Hellems, Randy Lickliter, Frank Douglas Warren, and Jeff Osborne. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Haynes, Burton Gunter, Bob Andrighetti, Jimmy Wickline, Michael Osborne, and his Beckley Shrine brothers.

Beckley Masonic Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M. will conduct graveside rites.

PHILADELPHIA — Euva Lee Campbell, 91, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012.

Irene Lillian Corley

Irene Lillian Corley, 96, of Daniels, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, after a long and beautiful life.

Born December 31, 1915, in Palatine, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Frank Schram and Nora Schram. Her grandchildren always enjoyed hearing the story of how her parents were hosting a New Year’s Eve party when her mother went into labor.

Alongside her husband, Irene was the former owner and operator of Corley Distributing Company Inc., retiring in 1983. The couple enjoyed a lifelong dream of traveling the world in their early retirement years.

She was a faithful member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church for 44 years. She served as a Lady of St. Francis for more than half of that time and worked year round to get ready for the bazaars and bake sales that her ministry supported. She loved her church and serving her community. She was a longtime member of The Shepherd Center. She brought joy to her friends and those that she encountered along her way.

Irene had a great sense of humor and never complained. She was optimistic and hopeful. Her heart was filled with thanks and gratitude.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William C. Corley, a daughter, Maurita Corley Lilly, a brother, Frank Schram, a brother, Jerry Schram, and a sister, Dolores Schram.

Survivors include a son, William C. Corley, Jr., of Cool Ridge; three daughters, Maryann P. Matheny of Clendenin, Maureen C. Gordon of Richmond , VA, and Rosemarie C. Corley of Oak Hill, five grandchildren, Shannon Lewis of Walkersville, WV, Michelle I. Rotellini of Daniels, WV, Ashley R. Corley of Indianapolis, IN, William “Three” C. Corley, III, of Palmdale, CA, and Alicia P. Cutting of Richmond, VA, eight great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Shawn Lewis of Walkersville, WV, Isabella, Dominic and Marco Rotellini of Daniels, WV, Will Angelini of Richmond, VA, and Claire and Hannah Corley of Palmdale, CA.

The family would like to thank Irene’s wonderful caregivers, Ruby, Shelvia, Mary, Gaye and Vinnie, for their years of love and service. They truly blessed Irene on a daily basis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel Sacus, Celebrant. Entombment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Serenity in Prosperity, WV.

There will be a funeral luncheon in the church hall at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church following entombment.

A rosary will be said in the church at 10:30 a.m. prior to the start of the funeral.

RICHWOOD — Virginia Gail Diaz, 71, of Richwood, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in Richwood Christian Church, Richwood, with Pastor Benjamin Stone, Pastor Jared Johnson and Evangelist Sam Gwinn officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the church.

Thelma Louise Drennen

HINES — Thelma Louise Drennen, 82, of Hines, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the Brian Center in Low Moor, VA.

Born November 2, 1929, in Marfrance, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Audirn Burdette and Zella Gay (Williams) Burdette Arbaugh.

Thelma was a homemaker and a member of the Hines Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and had a great concern for others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Stanford Drennen, on April 14, 2001; a sister, Wilma Jean Burdette; and a brother, Kenneth Willard Burdette.

Survivors include three daughters, Vickie L. Drennen of Hines, Julie A. Haught (Gene) of Idaho, and Natalie S. Posten (J.R.) of Dawson; three sons, Jesse L. Drennen (Myrtle) of Hot Springs, VA, Edward N. Drennen (Rita) of Clintonville, and Alan W. Drennen of Hines; and a sister, Florence Ellen Drennen of Hines; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012, at the Hines Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Eisenman officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

Troy C. Lusk

GREEN BANK — Troy C. Lusk, 89, of Green Bank passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born April 5, 1923, in Alpoca, WV, he was the son of the late Perry and Nancy Jane Bell Lusk.

Troy had worked for the CCCs, worked for the NRAO, Troy helped to build Jay Rockefeller’s home in Dunmore, he worked in maintenance for Burns Motor Freight and was a self-employed master carpenter who made his mark on many projects in Pocahontas County. He was a WWII Army Veteran and was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Other than his parents, Troy was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna D. Taylor Lusk; grandson Scott Michael, sister, Bernice, and brothers, Eldon and Vancie.

Survivors include daughters, Janie E Lusk of Marlinton, Judy F. Lusk of Beckley and Deanna K. Frome of Quaker Town, PA; son, Timmy E. Lusk and wife Mary C. of Green Bank; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Pauline Sizemore of Covington, VA, and Alice Owens of Glade Springs, VA; brothers, Andy Lusk of Hedgesville and Eldrid Lusk of Port Charlotte, FL.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 26, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with a memorial service at 8 p.m. with Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating.

In honoring Mr. Lusk’s request, his body will be cremated.

Billy Loyd Nicely

Billy Loyd Nicely, age 84, of MacArthur, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2012.

Born March 1, 1928, in Mabscott, WV, to the late Lloyd Baker Nicely, Mable Nicely Porterfield, and stepfather, Clyde Porterfield.

Mr. Nicely was a 27-year employee of Mabscott Supply Company and 17 years with Nicely’s Delivery Service. He was a faithful member of Old Grove Chapel.

Jo Ellen Richmond

LOWELL — Jo Ellen Richmond, 60, of Lowell, died Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a short illness.

Born February 9, 1952, in Hinton, she was the daughter of Edward C. Halloran of Talcott and the late Betty Boyd Halloran.

Ms. Richmond was a 1970 graduate of Talcott High School. She was a former employee of Summers County A.R.H. Hospital in Hinton and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church at Talcott. She was an avid country music fan and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Besides her father, survivors include her husband of nearly 41 years, Norman Richmond. One son, Joseph Curtis Richmond of Talcott. Two daughters, Susan Belue and husband Jason of Durham, NC, and Mandi Richmond Lowry and husband Loyd of Hilldale. Two brothers, Edward C. “Eddie” Halloran, Jr., of Ballengee and Timmy W. Halloran and wife Reva of Morgantown. Grandchildren: Kristen and Alex Belue, Ashley Richmond and Matthew and Lucas Lowry.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton. Burial will follow in the Simmons Cemetery at Mt. View. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Thelma Christine Shawver

Thelma Christine Shawver, age 74, of Beckley, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at her home following an extended illness.

She was born on August 31, 1938, in Kincaid, WV, to the late Oscar Underwood and Madge Dunbar Underwood.

Mrs. Shawver was a homemaker and enjoyed reading and doing her cross word puzzles. She loved to cook and spend time with her family. Despite her illness, Thelma was a strong woman and was determined to pull through. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and will be sadly missed.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 49 years Mr. Howard Ray Shawver, at home; daughter, Debbie Hawkins (Jeffrey) of Beckley; brothers, Charles Underwood (Betty), Woody Underwood (Linda), and David Underwood (Vicky) all of Beckley; grandchildren, Dustin Hawkins and fiancée Aleasa Parker, and Erica Hawkins of Beckley; great-grandchildren, Collin Parker and Trevor Hawkins; 2 special girls that knew her as “Mamaw,” Isabella and Annabelle Browning; nieces and nephews, Taffy Hower (Chris) and their children Elijah and Kalli, Allison Napier (Tim) and their children Kassidy and Ava, all whom referred to Thelma as “Nanny,” and Robin and Drexal Harrah, and Tammy and Ralph Martin.

James ‘Jimmy’ Hartwell Smith

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — James “Jimmy” Hartwell Smith, age 68, of Charlottesville, VA, passed to a greater life on Sunday, October 21, 2012. Jimmy, born on January 27, 1944, was the youngest of five children of the late Lewis Hartwell and Sarah Catherine Krantz Smith. He was also preceded in death by his brothers-in-law D. S. Morris Jr. and Rupert M. Owens, as well as nieces’ husbands Patrick Mawyer Jr. and Robin Moore.

Jimmy is survived by one brother, the Rev. Cecil Smith, and wife Sharon of Beckley, WV, and their children Cindy Henderson (children Bryan and Shea), Terry Moore, and Evan Smith; sister, Frances Morris, and her children Kathryn Mawyer (children Sara and Cameron), Daniel “Danny” Morris III and wife Jane (daughter Shelley Brubeck, husband John, and children Brittany, Rebekah, Peter, Benjamin, Abigail and Abraham), Elizabeth “Beth” Perkins (children Sean, Laura, and Andrew); sister Doris “Dot” Wood and her husband Earl, and son E. Edward “Eddie” Wood (son Peyton); and sister Patricia “Patsy” Owens Jones and her husband Vernon “Bill” Jones Jr. In addition to his family, Jimmy leaves special friends Kim Varin and his wife Linda, Penny Ray, and Edmund “Lee” Ward.

Jimmy was a loving and attentive son, brother, uncle, and loyal friend. He loved people, treating all the same. After retirement, he enjoyed daily visiting the downtown mall. Rarely did he miss the Saturday morning Farmers Market where he “collected” many hugs along with the treats he enjoyed.

Jimmy started working at an early age, doing numerous part-time jobs along with employment for 7 years at the then downtown Red Cross building. In 1964, he began his career at the Jefferson Madison Regional Library, where he devoted himself to keeping the building in operation. He retired in the year 2000 but continued taking care of the book drop and faithfully opened the library for Congregation Beth Israel’s Sunday morning Religious School classes.

The family extends special thanks to Donna Lydon for her daily pastoral visits during Jimmy’s most recent residential care and hospitalization. Also, for their skilled and compassionate medical care, a special thanks to Dr. James Bergin of UVA Cardiology and his team, especially Dr. Jamie Kennedy and RN NP Craig Thomas, and to all the nurses and staff on 4 Central at UVA Hospital. In addition, they appreciate his longtime primary care physician Dr. J. Devon Lowdon of Internal Medicine LTD, and the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital. Finally, they wish to commend the work of the Hospice of the Piedmont, whose Hospice House staff helped ease Jimmy’s transition to eternal life as well as guiding the family as he did so.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 25, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Cecil Smith and Pastor Jim Thornton at 1 p.m. Friday, October 26, at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, 674 Woodlands Road, with burial following at Holly Memorial Gardens.

James William Taylor II

James William Taylor II, age 87, of Sophia, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Cabell Huntington Hospital following an extended illness.

Born February 23, 1925, in Covel, WV, to the late James Taylor and Eva Trent Taylor.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Simmons; and a grandson, Sgt. John D. Meador, II, “J.D.”

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Christine Taylor, at home; daughters, Sharon A. Meador and husband John of Lexington, SC, Tammie Taylor of Sophia, and Melissa Oaks and husband Jim of Beckley; grandchildren, Robbie Spires of Columbia, SC, Rodney Spires of Columbia, SC, James Meador and wife Katrinna of Pelion, SC, and Michael Meador and wife Melissa of Charleston, SC, Kessi Taylor of Sophia, Kristin Belmont of Beckley, and Abby Oaks of Beckley; and great-grandchildren, Justin Meador, Alexandra Moore, Jessica Meador, Oliva Frost, Brianna Meador, Collin Napier, Cayden Meador, Ansley Meador, Elana Meador, and Miley Waddell.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity with Rev. James L. Oaks presiding. Interment will follow.

Dale A. Thomas

STEPHENSON — Dale Andrew Thomas, 52, of Stephenson passed away on Friday, October 19, 2012, at his residence following a long illness.

Born July 19, 1960, at Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Fred J. and Grace (Sizemore) Thomas.

Dale was a former employee of Livingston Ship Building in Orange, TX, and was also formerly employed by Kraft Food as an equipment operator. In his leisure he enjoyed motorcycle riding and he especially enjoyed sight seeing.

In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Elsie Sizemore, and his paternal grandmother, Ida Mae Thomas.

Those left to cherish his memory include his companion, Zelda Graham; four brothers, Randall L. Thomas of Mount Hope, Larry E. Thomas and Alvin D. Thomas both of Statesville, NC, and Jeffery D. O’Neal of Orange, TX; four grandchildren, Abecca O’Neal, Callie O’Neal, Tammy O’Neal, and Chase O’Neal all of Stephenson; three nephews, Randall Lee Thomas, Jr., Rocky Lee Thomas, and Jason Harley Thomas all of Statesville, NC.

Services will be 12 noon Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Billy Ray Woodson

OAK HILL — Billy Ray Woodson, 71, of Oak Hill, WV, died on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at his home.

Born July 30, 1941, at Milburn, WV, he was the son of the late Charles and Helen Phillips Woodson.

He was a retired long haul truck driver and U.S. Army veteran.

A brother, Jerry Woodson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, William Charles Woodson and wife Brittany and Jerry Lee Woodson, both of Oak Hill, one daughter, Madison Woodson of Oak Hill, the mother of his children, Susan Woodson, and special friend, Iris Fortner of Oak Hill.

Also surviving are four brothers, Larry Woodson of Ohio, Ronald Woodson of Florida, Jackie Woodson of Indiana, Mike Woodson of Oak Hill, WV, and one grandchild.

Per his request, Mr. Woodson was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
