Olivia Shannon Burley

OAK HILL — Olivia Shannon Burley passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital at birth.

A memorial service to commemorate her birth will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church, Oak Hill, with Sharon Hughes officiating. Private burial will be held by her mom and dad.

Raymond L. Burnett

MEADOW BRIDGE — Raymond L. Burnett, 87, of Meadow Bridge went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 28, 2013, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels following a long illness.

Born September 20, 1926, at Lawton, WV, he was a son of the late Frank P. and Matilda A. Harmon Burnett.

A member of the Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church where he enjoyed attending Sunday School and Church as long as his health permitted, Veteran of the United States Navy, he served his country in the Pacific during the Pearl Harbor invasion. Raymond retired from Union Carbide after 35 years of service.

Preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Grimmett Burnett; two sisters, Doris Ann Burnett and Garnett S. Holliday; and three brothers, Ray, Roy and Ralph Burnett.

Those left to cherish his memory include one sister, Eula Vire Tread of Virginia; one brother, Robert F. Burnett and wife Peggy of Hilltop; one stepson, David Olen Grimmett of Virginia; one sister-in-law, Peggy Burnette of Meadow Bridge; several stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Mike Whisman officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from noon until time of services on Monday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Nola Elizabeth Carpenter

SISSONVILLE — Nola Elizabeth Carpenter, 79, of Sissonville, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.

Services to celebrate the life of Nola will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at the Long and Fisher Funeral Home Chapel in Sissonville with the Rev. Robert Legg officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Garden of Memories in Sissonville. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Long and Fisher Funeral Home.

Marion Ruth Carte

HICO — Marion Ruth Carte, 92, of Hico entered into Heaven on Wednesday, November 27th, 2013.

She was born on August 4th, 1921, at Clifty.

She was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church where she attended for 85 years. She loved making quilts and working puzzle books. She loved her family passionately and cherished every moment with them.

She was the last surviving sibling of her immediate family. She also was preceded in death by two sons: Franklin and Kenneth.

She is survived by her daughter: Eilene Campbell and husband Robert, two sons, Donald Carte and wife Dora Ann and Richard Carte and wife Rose, all of Hico. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Barbara Weston of Deltona, Florida, Carol Carte of Fayetteville, Teresa Stephenson of Hico, Rob Campbell of Hico, Kevin Carte of Fayetteville, Travis Carte of Hico, Tammy Knox of Fayetteville, and Mindy Carte of Hico. She also is survived by 17 great-grandchildren and she was awaiting the birth of her first great-great-granddaughter. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted with pastor Freddie Parkins officiating. Burial will follow in Legg Cemetery on Stringtown Road.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Edith Collison

Edith Collison, 83, of Greystone Drive, Beaver, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Phyllis Arthur Crosier

WAITEVILLE — Phyllis Arthur Crosier, 76, of Waiteville, passed away Nov. 28, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at the New Zion Church at Waiteville, with the Revs. Bob Ratliff and Mark Smearman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union.



Wallace Deal

SUMMERSVILLE — Wallace Deal, 79, of Summersville died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013.

Mary Ruth Freeman

EAST DUBLIN, Ga. — Services for Mary Ruth Freeman, age 79, of East Dublin, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013, at the First Independent Methodist Church. Rev. Paul Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Freeman was born in Clifftop, WV.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Persinger and Mary Evelyn Persinger, siblings, Loretta Myles, Nora Dooley, Richard Persinger, Harold Persinger, and David Persinger.

She was a member of First Independent Methodist Church and was a homemaker. 

Survivors include children, Linda (John) Davis of Dublin, Jackie Hedrick of East Dublin, Danny Daniel of East Dublin, Mary Wall of East Dublin, Crystal Ingram, Steve (Kim) Rogers, of East Dublin, Robin Jones of East Dublin, Greg Ward of East Dublin, Richard Ward of York, PA, siblings, James (Kay) Persinger, Connie Edwards, Barbara Lavender, and Melissa Persinger all of Oak Hill, WV.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church.

Norman Stanley Gunter

MEADOW BRIDGE — Norman Stanley Gunter, 81, of Backus Mountain, Meadow Bridge, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at his home following a short battle with cancer.

Born October 24, 1932, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Lundy and Jessie Roark Gunter.

Stanley served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. He loved his work on the water and so he went to the Great Lakes working on barges hauling iron and steel. Stanley enjoyed repairing watches, guns, and knives and enjoyed fishing.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Steve Gunter.

Surviving him are his wife of 57 years, Norma Harmon Gunter; his 6 children Larry (Sharon), Robert (Christi), Chris (Jamie), Patrick (Leslie) and Misty Gwinn (Nicky), all of Meadow Bridge, and Warren (Brenda) of Dawson; 1 brother Garth and his wife Drema of Hump Mountain, Lockbridge; 10 grandchildren Ashley, Stanley, Christopher, Emily, Kaitlyn, Cameron, Gus, Kinsely, Gage, and Alexis; and 2 great-grandchildren Jacob and Landin.

There will be no services at this time. As per Stanley’s request, the body was cremated.

George Edwin Gwinn

RED STAR — George Edwin Gwinn, 64, of Red Star, WV, died at his home on Thursday, November 28, 2013.

Born September 23, 1949, at Red Star, WV, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Charlotte Bell Gwinn.

George was a drywall contractor. He was a member of the Carlisle Church of God and the Mount Hope Lions Club. He was a 1968 graduate of Mount Hope High School.

Preceded in death by sisters, Louise Bell, Patricia Bowen, and Susie Sarver; one brother, Lawrence Gwinn.

Survivors include one daughter, Denise Crookshanks of Princeton, WV; one son, Adam Gwinn of Lewisburg, WV; four grandchildren, Ethan, Raelyn, Mason and Brayden; one brother, Gary Gwinn and his wife, Sharon of Kilsyth, WV; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Hope with Rev. Richard Allen officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call Sunday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Richard Wayne Heath

Richard Wayne Heath, age 61, of Sophia, West Virginia, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 27, 2013.

Born on December 16, 1951, in Beckley, he was the son of Dolly Farley Heath and Billy Heath of Midway.

Mr. Heath was a disabled building construction employee, and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3226 at Midway-Sophia.

Mr. Heath attended the Oak Grove Christian Church, and was a member of the Brothers of the Wheel, Highlands Chapter.

In his spare time he enjoyed motorcycle riding.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene Vandall Murry Heath; His children, R.J. Heath and his wife Angie of Sophia, a daughter Alyson Nicholas of Romney, WV. Stepdaughter, Amber Murry of Sophia, Stacey Murry, of Beckley, and Tashawna Vandall of Beckley. Three granddaughters, a grandson, six stepgrandsons, and three stepgranddaughters. Three brothers, Johnny Dwayne Heath of Midway, Kyle Heath and his wife Sharon of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, and Billy Heath Jr. of Midway. A sister, Patricia Strader and her husband Rennis of Midway.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Barry Clyburn officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Kyle Heath Jr., Luke Heath, Billy Heath Jr., Oscar Hughes, David Caldwell, and Timmy Asbury. Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle and Johnny Heath.

Minor Redden

Minor Redden, age 82, of Grandview, WV, passed away at his home on Monday, November 25, 2013.

Born on July 21, 1931, at Table Rock, he was the son of the late Herbert Redden and Ada Harrah Redden.

Minor was a former sawmill employee and a farmer. He was a member of the Crow Baptist Church, where he enjoyed attending his church. Minor enjoyed gardening, attending church, and talking to his friends.

Surviving are a niece, Betty Toney of Beckley, and nephews, David and James Toney of Beckley, and a nephew who was raised with him as a brother, Roy Redden and his wife Joanne of Cleveland, Ohio. Two great-nephews and a great-niece also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Burks officiating. Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery at Grandview, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

William F. ‘Bill’ Sams

OCEANA — William F. “Bill” Sams, 80, of Oceana, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 25, 2013, at his home.

He was born October 24, 1933, in Glen Morrison, WV, a son of the late Grant and Edith Fisher Sams.

He was a Korean War Veteran where he received a purple heart. He was a state mine inspector, and he worked for Eastern Coal Corp. where he retired. He was the last constable voted in for Wyoming County on November 7, 1972. He attended and was a member of Family Praise and Worship Center of Oceana. He attended Oceana High School.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son Timothy Sams; two brothers Honas Poe, and Hames Sams; and a sister Agnes Tilley.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Drema Lewis Sams of Oceana; three daughters Kim (David Lee) Green of Oceana, Heather (Joe) Webb of Lexington, NC, and Kellie Sams of Oceana; a son James Sams of Oceana; grandchildren Ashlee Gibson, TJ (Jordan) Sams, Jacob Sams, Sarah Sams, Toni Sams, Samantha Sams, Timbo Sams, Nate Sams, Mia Webb, Lyndsi Webb, Joey Webb, Christian Sams, Seneca Evans, and Blake Evans; a brother Joseph Sams of Ghent; a sister Tish Dekraker of Fairfax, VA; and a multitude of extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV, with Rev. Ricky Browning, and Bro. Ricky Proffitt officiating. He will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV. Pall Bearers will be family and friends.

Friends may gather with the family on Sunday, December 1, 2013, from 2 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice of Southern WV for taking such good care of Bill, and a thank you to all the nurses at Raleigh General Hospital.
