Robert H. ‘Bob’ Cline

BRENTON — Robert H. “Bob” Cline, 70, of Brenton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 2, 2014, following a sudden illness.

Born January 18, 1944, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Howard and Evelyn Johnson Cline.

Bob was a 1962 graduate of Baileysville High School; following school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force; while in the service he attended the University of Alaska in Anchorage; following his service to his country he attended Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, where he earned an associate degree in mining engineering; he served in various capacities in the construction industry. He specialized in road, bridges, and earth-moving projects throughout the U.S. One of his proud achievements was Supervising the construction of the Coalfields expressway, and was looking forward to helping build the next 2-mile segment of this road. Bob was a faithful member of the Brenton Baptist Church, and Bob loved serving the Lord.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his Mother and Father-in-law Ralph and Ora Short Cook.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 47 years Naomi Sue Cook Cline, his children whom he loved dearly Carla Michelle Cline Thomas and her husband J.C. Thomas, Joshua Robert Cline and his wife Talina Irene Allen Cline. Bob was blessed with four grandchildren, Siara Brooke Watson Pope, Taylor Grace Thomas, Jackson Parker Thomas, and Sophie Marie Cline, and his great-grandson Denver Clay Pope. His sisters Thelma Lester and her husband Arden, Charlotte Rose, Patricia Hatfield and her husband Junior, Susan Toler, and Sharon Cline and her husband Tom, his brother Christopher Mark Cline. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, co-workers, and countless friends whom he loved dearly.

Services celebrating Bob’s life will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Brenton Baptist Church with his Pastor Tommy Knotts officiating; the family request that if you have cowboy boots wear them to the service in honor of Bob. Following the service he will be laid to rest in the Cook Cemetery with military honors by the Wyoming County Honor Guard. Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Bob’s memory to the Baileysville Community Center.

The family would like to thank those that responded to help Bob during his sudden illness.

Ina Coffman

HINTON — Mrs. Ina Coffman of Hinton left this earth peacefully January 3, 2014, at 8:45 p.m. in the Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hilldale, WV.

Ina, the daughter of Alpha Alonzo Martin and Grace Dona Cox Martin, was born September 18, 1913. The Martins had 10 children, Ethel Irene Cooper (deceased), James Edward Martin (deceased), Bertha Frances Goddard (deceased), Robert Alonzo Martin (deceased), Russell William Martin (deceased), Johnnie Henry Martin (deceased), Nannie Marie Sifers, Harry Wade Martin (deceased) and Alice Lee Woods.

Ina married Thomas Carl Coffman April 4, 1934; they have one son, Thomas Dean, who married Dalene Alderman. “Granny” has two grandchildren, Joel (wife Sara), Joanna (husband Chris), and four great-grandchildren, Chloe and Nate Coffman, Kaitlyn Grace and Isaac Rogar. She has 28 nieces and nephews.

Ina was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hinton and was active within Sunday School Class and Ladies Mission Circle. She was a nurse’s aide with Hinton Hospital as well as Summers County Hospital. After retiring, she continued to do private sitting for families. Her hobbies were quilting on the wooden frames her husband, Carl, had made, crocheting, baking and sharing recipes as well as the finished products.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Reverend Warren Gilpin officiating. Burial will follow at the Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Jackie Adkins, Greg Vandall, David Quisenberry, Franklin Bowles, Jeff Chambers, Joel Coffman and Chris Rogar.

Doris LaVain ‘Vannie’ Cook

OCEANA — Doris LaVain “Vannie” Cook, 57, of Oceana, WV, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Welch Community Hospital, Welch, WV.

She was born January 8, 1956, in Pineville, WV, a daughter of the late Edward Doris and Hanner Merl Massey Cook.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brother Edward Leo Cook.

Survivors include her three nieces Hope Walker, Mica Walker, and Krystal Cook all of Oceana; two nephews James Cook, and Josh Walker all of Oceana; a sister Teresa (Mike) Walker of Oceana; two brothers Robert Cook, and Mike Cook all of Oceana; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV, with the Rev. Timmy Brewster officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Cook Cemetery, Oceana, WV. Friends may gather with the family from 11 a.m. until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.

Carol A. ‘Pinky’  Harvey

Carol A. “Pinky” Harvey, 63, of Beckley, WV, died at home January 3, 2014, after a short illness.

Born April 22, 1951, in the Wyoming General Hospital in Mullens, WV, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Cassie Smith Grant.

She graduated from Mullens High School in 1969. After twenty years, she retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Willie B. Grant.

Those left to cherish her memories are her two sons, Anthony and Michael Harvey, both of Beckley; two brothers, Danny and Samuel Grant, both of Beckley; three sisters, Thelma Cave of Beckley, Pamela (Jackie) Smith of Columbus, Ohio, and Pamela (Zachary) Woodson of Oak Hill, WV; a special friend, Dennis Burks, a special niece, Shawanna Wright, and a special caregiver, Lisa Mitchell, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Hazel Josephine Horwath

Hazel Josephine Horwath, 100, of Beckley, passed away January 4, 2014.

Born June 23, 1913, in Lester, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Elizabeth Hawley Ellison.

Besides her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Horwath; a son, Louis Everett Horwath; brothers, Otie, Andrew, Arvel and Edward Ellison; and a sister, Mildred Webster Ferguson; and two grandchildren.

Hazel was a longtime member of Memorial Baptist Church where she helped with the nursery, enjoyed singing with the senior choir and loved taking trips with her friends from church.

Survivors include her sons, Edwin Horwath of Holly Springs, MS, Jimmie Horwath of Granada Hills, CA, Richard Horwath of Beaver, WV, and David Horwath of Stonington, CT; daughters, Ellen Dunford of Mabscott, WV, Fran Dawson of Warren, MI, and Sue Cantley of Beckley; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at Calfee Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Dr. Charles Bright will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.

Bruna Rezzonico Kaufmann

CAPALOGA, Switzerland — Bruna Rezzonico Kaufmann, 92, of Capaloga, Switzerland, passed away on December 23rd, 2013, after a short illness.

Bruna was born on March 20, 1921, in Mullens, WV, and is the daughter of the late Enrico Rezzonico and Rosa Lepari Rezzonico.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Max Kaufmann, and two brothers, Bill and Louis.

Bruna graduated from Mullens High School in 1939 and from Marshall University in 1943. She taught school in Wyoming County for 30 years, the last one being Mullens High School before moving to Switzerland. She kept her home in Mullens and came in twice a year for many years and then changed to once a year. She was a faithful member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Mullens and the Catholic Church in Capaloga, Switzerland.

Surviving are two nieces, Ann Rezzonico Toler of Mullens, WV, and Granella Bassetti Bamis of Sementiva, Switzerland; two nephews, William “Rick” Rezzonico and wife, Lea Rezzonico, of Mullens, WV, and Gianfranco Bassetti of Carina, Switzerland; two great-nieces, Amy Toler and Kealy Toler of Mullens, WV; one great-nephew, Nick Rezzonico of Huntington, WV; and few cousins, Jane Houck and family and sister-in-law of 65 years, JoAnn Rezzonico of Mullens, WV.

The funeral memorial Mass will be at a later date at St. John’s Catholic Church in Mullens, WV.

Buran E. Meadows

MANASSAS, Va. — Buran E. Meadows, 91, of Manassas, VA, formerly of Hinton, died Friday, January 3, 2014, in the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Born October 14, 1922, at Brooks, he was a son of the late Henry and Edna Cales Meadows.

Buran was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He retired from C&O Railway following many years of service. Buran enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Buran was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Jane Cox Meadows; three brothers and three sisters.

Those left to cherish his memory include three daughters, Gale Meadows Holcomb and husband Tom of Manassas, VA, Sharon Kay Meadows of Maxwelton and Pamela Whorton and husband Mike of Manassas, VA; two grandchildren, Brian Adkins and Brad Adkins; three great-grandchildren, Dakota, Karensa and Braxton.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2014, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. A private burial will follow. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Bradley O’Dell

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Bradley Wayne O’Dell, 78, passed away January 1, 2014, at Diamond Health Care, Simpsonville.

He was the son of the late Tad and Icie O’Dell of Rainelle, WV. Bradley was born and raised on the family farm in Leivasy, WV, a coal mining community.

Though confined to a wheelchair since age 27, he was a very active athlete and community volunteer for many years. He was a member of Glendale Baptist Church, Mauldin, SC.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; a daughter Debra Robinson of Nicholas County, WV; three brothers, Clay of Rainelle, WV, Gordon (Garylee) of Leivasy, WV, and Kenny (Julie) of Simpsonville, SC; a sister, Camilla Smith (James), of Hines, WV; four grandsons, B.J. Robinson, Justin Robinson, Robert O’Dell, and Joshua O’Dell, all of WV, and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son David Wayne O’Dell (Jill) of Victor, WV, and oldest brother Harvey of California.

Our special gratitude goes to the wonderful staff of Diamond Health Care, especially to nurse Robbie Evans, who cared for Bradley for over four years.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in West Virginia.

Rachel Marie Smith Richmond, 96, of the Villages of Greystone, formerly of Russell Street, Beckley, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.

ROANOKE, Va. — Dane Davis Riffe, Jr., born December 6, 2013, passed away January 1, 2014, in Roanoke, Va.

He was the son of Dane Davis Riffe, Sr., and Kristal Dawn Willis of Roanoke.

Hilda Marie Smith

Hilda Marie Smith died January 3, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House after a long illness. She was born June 11, 1927, at Lillybrook, WV. Hilda was the daughter of George (Bud) and Ether Archer.

In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Raymond Smith, and also a sister, Irene Thompson of Mt. Hope.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Freda Almond of Beckley; sons, Jim and wife Linda, David and wife Debbie, Bill and wife Robin all of Coal City; 5 grandchildren, Sandy, Jeff, Jim Ray, Stephen and Brandon; 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Hilda worked at Coal City Elementary as a teacher’s aide for years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #136 Coal City Chapter having received her 50-year pin this past summer. She enjoyed crocheting and making Afghans for her family to enjoy. She loved cooking large family dinners on special occasions. She also enjoyed gardening, vegetable as well as flowers.

As requested by Hilda, there will be no visitation or formal funeral.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2014, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum # 2 with Nina Bays officiating.

Steve Allen Smith

HINTON — Steve Allen Smith, 57, of Hinton passed away Friday, January 3, 2014, at his home following a long illness.

Born September 14, 1956, he was a son of the late Jessie and Gladys Phillips Smith and reared by his grandmother the late Eva Smith.

Steve was of the Baptist faith and had lived most of his life in Summers County. He was a construction worker who enjoyed fishing, shooting pool and spending time with friends and family.

Steve was preceded in death by four brothers, James Smith, Mike Smith, Johnnie Smith and Billy Lyn Smith, and one sister, Patty Lou Mitchem.

Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter, Gladys Smith and companion Brian of Mechanicsville, MD; six grandchildren, Nyla, Ashlyn, Daelyn, Amari, Devin and Byron; last surviving sister, Edith Coffman and husband Steve of Jumping Branch, and several nieces and nephews. In his life Steve had two special women, Drema Smith and Bev Cordial, and a special friend, Jimmy Gore.

Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2014, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors with Pastor Josh Southern officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m.

At Steve’s request the body will be cremated following the services.

NEOLA — Mary L. Wade, 77, of Neola died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs with Pastor Gerald Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Mountain Grove, Va. The family will receive their friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home.
