Helen H. Evans

DELTONA, Fla. — Mrs. Helen H. Evans, age 89, of Deltona, Florida, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2013, at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Orange City, Florida.

Helen was born January 30, 1924, in Kinsale, Virginia, the daughter of Frank A. and Roberta V. Hardwick.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Robert Evans Sr., brother Frank Hardwick and sister Maryanne Baker.

Survivors include her two daughters, Janet L. Montgomery (husband Danny) of Deltona, Florida, and Cindy R. Fowler of Daytona Beach, Florida, and one son, Robert W. Evans Jr. (wife Kathy) of Frederick, MD; as well as six grandchildren (Tiffany and Evan, Shaun and Erin, and Corey and Cody); one great-granddaughter (Sophia), and her brother, Snowden V. Hardwick of DeBary, FL.

Helen was a retired banker from Citizens Bank of Maryland and Raleigh County National Bank in West Virginia. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and bringing laughter into people’s lives.

She was a blessing to those who were fortunate enough to have her in their lives and will be dearly missed.

Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, December 28th, 6 to 8 p.m. at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held Sunday, December 29th, 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Chaplain David Meyer officiating.

Edith Halstead Lilly

Darling Edith Halstead Lilly, age 92, of MacArthur, died at the Bowers Hospice House in Cranberry on Dec. 25th, 2013.

Edith, affectionately known as Bunny by her family and friends, was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend and a Child of God.

She was the widow of Roger Merrill Lilly and the mother of Mason R. Lilly of MacArthur, Mark A. Lilly and wife, Brenda Kay Lilly, of Beckley and grandmother of Henry and Melinda Lilly of Beckley and Jay and Sarah Lilly of Berea, KY, sons of Mason Lilly. Although grandsons were often interchangeable with her sons, her love for family knew no discrimination or order.

Edith was one of fourteen children born to Charles A. and Cordia Ann Lilly Halstead. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Mason, Tennis, William (Bill), Paul and Charles Halstead, and six sisters, Mildred Aliff, Nora Adkins, Blanche Martin, Edna Nowlan, Ruby Crooks, and Ann Halsey.

Those left to cherish her memory are Lois Banks and husband, Dr. James W. Banks, of Union and Mary Rodgers of Charleston.

Although Edith made everyone feel special, she will be missed by her special niece, Cordia Halstead of Beckley, and many other surviving nieces and nephews.

Edith was a faithful member of Sovereign Grace Chapel and a Christian sister to many.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, Dec. 29th, at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Walter Pendleton will be officiating. Interment will be at the Sunset Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Henry and Jay Lilly, Jerry Pegram, David Shrader, Casey Shrader and Paul Pendleton.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Bowers Hospice House for their care and compassion of our beloved Bunny in her final days. The family urges that any donations be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Cecil Ray Murdock

Cecil Ray Murdock, age 87, of White Oak, West Virginia, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Tuesday, December 24, 2013.

Born on August 14, 1926, in Middleton, WV, he was the son of the late Milton Murdock and Nannie Winston Murdock.

Mr. Murdock was a retired coal miner with 43 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA and was a U.S. Navy Veteran during WWII.

Mr. Murdock was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dempsey Greer, Dolphus Greer, Johnny Greer, and by a sister Helen McDaniel.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years in which he passed away on their anniversary, Lois Ruby Thompson Murdock.

A son Phillip Murdock and his wife Jo Ellen of White Oak, WV, five daughters, Anna F. Murdock, Regina Murdock, and Mary Yvonne Murdock all of White Oak, Elizabeth “Libby” Blair and her husband Buster “Dick” of Jemison, Alabama, and Michelle Ratcliff and her husband Shawn of White Oak.

Five grandsons, Joseph Blair, Joshua Blair, Stephen Amon, Zachary Amon, Colten Helmandollar, and a granddaughter Heather Ratcilff.

Six great-grandchildren, Jade and Madison Amon, Joseph “Lil Man” Blair, Vicki Blair, and Cayden Helmandollar, and Elijah “Eli” Amon.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, December 29, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Benny Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Lola Lively Nester

LEWISBURG — Lola Lively Nester, 83, died Dec. 26, 2013.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rick Brown officiating. A graveside ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at Cunningham Cemetery in St. Albans.

Marie Tolliver Shumate

MORGANTOWN — Marie Tolliver Shumate, 90, of Morgantown, formerly of Sophia and Saulsville, died peacefully Friday, December 27, 2013, in the Westover home of her daughter Rose Marie Bell.

She was born August 12, 1923, in Maben, daughter of the late James Amos Tolliver and Rosa Elzina Perry Privett Tolliver Shumate.

Marie graduated from Mullens High School and completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in various educational fields at Concord (College) University, University of Charleston (Morris Harvey), Marshall University, and the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. She often shared memories of her father tutoring her and encouraging her to pursue higher education. She taught elementary classes at many Wyoming County schools, including Sabine, Maben, Glen Fork, Glen Rogers and Pineville. She was one of the first teachers to bring Title I Reading services to Wyoming County students.

After retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, including Hawaii and Alaska where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Some of those travels were in the company of area square dancing clubs. Others were with family and friends. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Marie and her husband also earned their State VIPP (very important park person) badges.

In addition to her parents Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Hursie C. (Shorty) Shumate. She was the last of 16 siblings: Thursey Jane Tolliver, John Tolliver, Levi Tolliver, James H Tolliver, Berdine Tolliver, Walter E. Tolliver, Jesse Tolliver, Susie Tolliver Phillips, Obed Thomas Tolliver, Amanda Privett Shumate, Roscoe Privett, Virgil Privett, Arthur Privett, Lillie Privett Kincaid Gunter, Zada Privett Nolan Tolliver, and Alva Privett.

Marie is survived by her son, Rudy Donnell Shumate and wife Dreama of Bluefield, VA, her daughter Rose Marie Bell of Morgantown, grandson Paul Michael Gunter and wife Laura of Morgantown, grandson Terry Bell and wife Kara of Morgantown, granddaughter Sharon Ann Putnam and husband Russell of Garner, NC, great-grandchildren Brandon Gunter, Lauryn Gunter, and Lizzy Bell of Morgantown, Megan Robertson and Zach Robertson of Louisburg, NC.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice Care in Morgantown and a special thanks to Estela, Michelle and Kara who steadfastly and lovingly cared for Marie.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Linda Lee Stiffler

Linda Lee Stiffler, 66, of Beckley, WV, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 26, 2013. Linda was a genuine Christian who always had a kind word, a warm smile, and motherly advice for all who had the privilege to know her.

Linda was born on February 15, 1947, in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

The daughter of Herbert and Verna Dysard Cunningham of Coalport, Pennsylvania, Linda  met a young man, Jim Stiffler, who would become her high school sweetheart. Shortly after high school graduation, her sweetheart answered the call to serve his country. Upon his return stateside the two were married February 10, 1967.

After moving their young family to West Virginia, Linda began a career at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. After being diagnosed with Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis and unable to continue her career, Linda retired after more than 20 years of service. Linda's lung disease eventually led her to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she received a double lung transplant in November of 2010. Her post-transplant time was not always easy. During the difficult times she relied on faith, scripture, and family. One of her favorite scriptures was Matthew 7:25. Her husband Jim, daughter Traci and son-in-law Mike Sweeney were extraordinary in her transplant journey. Linda and her entire family was and will always be eternally grateful to the donor family that made the decision to donate the gift of life.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Verna Cunningham, sister Katherine Hoover, and her best friend and sister-in-law Lydia Cunningham.

Those left on earth to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted husband Jim of 46 years; her son Troy and wife Stephanie of Meadow Creek, WV, Bishop Todd Stiffler and wife Sheri Stiffler of Pulaski, VA, and daughter Traci and husband Mike Sweeney of Shady Spring, WV.

Her most precious gifts are her 7 grandchildren TJ, Trenton, Tristan, Tanner, Tripp, Taelyn, and Tab. Extended family include her loving brother Dave Cunningham of Sorrento, FL, her nephews Byron Hoover, Davey Cunningham, and Brandon Hoover; her nieces Lori Faust, Amy Cunningham-Blank, Sarah Fink, and Amanda Cunningham.

Pallbearers will be sons Troy and Mike, grandsons TJ, Trenton, and Tristan, Chris Fink, Ryan Neal, David “Boog” Reed Jr.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Beckley Church of God with Bishop Todd Stiffler officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. God is love — He cares for us the way we love our kids. Life is precious. Keep God in your heart and always ask Him to guide. You will see him working in your life, if you don't know Him invite Him into your heart. God loves you and he will take care of you.”

Michael Dale Wells

LILLYDALE — Michael Dale Wells, 53, of Lillydale, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Bishop Randy Bowles officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 11 a.m. until service time Monday, Dec. 20. He will be laid to rest in Highland Memory Gardens, Pecks Mill.
