Mary Catherine Abbott
Mary Catherine Abbott of Beckley died on Wednesday, December 25, 2013, following a short illness.
Born in Beckley on March 16, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Nancy Nucitaja Abbott.
Mary was a Roman Catholic and a lifelong active member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Beckley. At St. Francis, she was an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, minister of the sick, a member of the Ladies of St. Francis, the Bereavement Committee, and served on the St. Francis de Sales Catholic School Board.
Mary graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and received bachelor degrees from St. Mary of the Springs College in Columbus, OH, and Concord College in Athens, WV. She received a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from West Virginia University and did advanced studies at the University.
Mary was an educator having taught at Rhodell, Stoco and Hollywood Elementary Schools. She served as curriculum supervisor for Raleigh County Schools for 28 years and served on numerous committees on the County, State and National levels.
Mary retired from the Raleigh County School system in 1988 and became active in the West Virginia and Raleigh County Associations of Retired School Employees, was a West Virginia State volunteer for AARP serving as the West Virginia Retired Educators Liaison, was a Prisoner Visitation and Support Volunteer at the Federal Correctional Institution of Beckley, a member of the Woman’s Club of Beckley serving as the president in 2008-2010, Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society for teachers, and a member of the Raleigh County Democrat Executive Committee.
Mary is survived by her best friend and loving sister Katherine Holt of Hinton. She is also survived by special nephews, Okie Thompson and his wife Carolyn of Crab Orchard, John L. Thompson of Norfolk, VA; two special nieces, Kimberly Abbott of Beckley and Nancy Jean Truman and her husband Tom of Beckley; great-nephews, John Michael Thompson and his wife Marissa of Norfolk, VA, and Frank Thompson of New York; great-nieces, Leslie Karen Tyree and her husband Scott of Teays Valley, WV, Kelly Dawn Thompson of Fenton, MI, and Samantha Truman of Beckley. Mary is also survived by her loving companions, Panda and Tabitha and Kali and Kali too.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Frank Abbott; sister, Santa Marie Thompson; brothers-in-law, Okie Thompson of MacArthur and Jack E. Holt of Hinton; and a best friend, Earl Riner. She was also preceded in death by her constant and loving poodle, Rusty.
A funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel Sacus officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home where a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. led by Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

Sibyl Louise Ball of Beckley died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013.

James E. ‘Wootie’ Beasley
HINTON — James E. “Wootie” Beasley, 67, of Hinton, WV, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013, following a short illness.
Born February 5, 1946, at Hinton, he was the son of the late Jim Beasley and Hallie Grimmett Beasley.
Wootie was a 1964 graduate of Hinton High School and later achieved his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Bluefield State College. He was employed as a guard at the West Virginia State Prison at Pence Springs. He was an employee of Meadows Furniture Company and Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors for many years. Wootie served as a Summers County Magistrate for 12 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, and rafting, as long as his health permitted.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his special aunt and uncle, Mildred and Milton “Nookie” Arrington.
Those left to cherish his memory are one daughter, Jamie Leigh Bragg of Hinton, and two grandsons, Tyler and Hunter Bragg. Also left to cherish his memory are his close friends, Drew Caldwell, Joe Garcia, and Becky Clinebell. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the many caregivers throughout the years.
Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. December 30, 2013. At Wootie’s request, following the services, his body will be cremated.

DENVER, N.C. — Mildred Loretta Canterbury, 86, of Denver, NC, formerly of Jesse, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013.
Born August 9, 1926, at Keyrock, she was the daughter of the late William Harrison Jewell and Virginia Lee Halsey Jewell.
Mrs. Canterbury was a member of the Denver Baptist Church, Denver, NC.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Clinton Canterbury.

TIOGA — Herbert “Pikie” Murl Curry, Jr., 86, of Tioga, WV, died Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Born December 12, 1927, at Tioga, he was the son of the late Herbert “Buck” Sr. and Lucinda Tyler Curry.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty J. Grizzell Curry, and his sister, Helen Jarvis.
He was a Baptist, Korean War Veteran, and retired coal miner.
Survivors include his son, Herbert Curry III and wife Janette; grandson, Jason (LeeAnn); granddaughter, Miranda (Matt) Owens; great-grandson, Jayden Curry, all of SC; daughter, Angela Miller and husband Steve; granddaughters, Stacy (Wes) and Cassie; great-granddaughter, Brynnelee Waters; grandson, Garrett; sisters, Thelma and Hugh Peal of LA, Onalee Dempsey of Shady Spring, WV, and Carol Dillon and husband Gary; brother, Hilbert Curry and wife Janice, all of Tioga.

DELTONA, Fla. — Mrs. Helen H. Evans, age 89, of Deltona, Florida, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2013, at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Orange City, Florida.
Helen was born January 30, 1924, in Kinsale, Virginia, the daughter of Frank A. and Roberta V. Hardwick.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Robert Evans Sr., brother Frank Hardwick and sister Maryanne Baker.
Survivors include her two daughters, Janet L. Montgomery (husband Danny) of Deltona, Florida, and Cindy R. Fowler of Daytona Beach, Florida, and one son, Robert W. Evans Jr. (wife Kathy) of Frederick, MD; as well as six grandchildren (Tiffany and Evan, Shaun and Erin, and Corey and Cody); one great-granddaughter (Sophia), and her brother, Snowden V. Hardwick of DeBary, FL.
Helen was a retired banker from Citizens Bank of Maryland and Raleigh County National Bank in West Virginia. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and bringing laughter into people’s lives.
She was a blessing to those who were fortunate enough to have her in their lives and will be dearly missed.
Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, December 28th, 6 to 8 p.m. at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held Sunday, December 29th, 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Chaplain David Meyer officiating.

Kathleen Delilah (Dickens) Fraley
Kathleen Delilah (Dickens) Fraley, 86, of Dorothy, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 23, 2013, at home with her family by her side.
She was born in Cove Creek, WV, November 22, 1927, the daughter of the late Sarah R. Cook and William “Bill” Dickens.
She is also preceded in death by her stepfathers, Aldie Combs and Aldie Cook; sister, Alene Wills; brothers, Gene Combs and Sonny “Max” Cook; first born son, Robert Dean Fraley; and grandson, Kenneth Wayne Fraley.
Kathleen was employed by Olgle Bay Norton Company Store, Marfork, WV, for approximately 7 years and Fraley’s Grocery, Dorothy, WV, for approximately 8 years. She then decided to be at home to raise her three wonderful children.
She was a member of the Colcord Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and elder, a member of the church choir, Ladies Association, and participated in Bible Studies. She also visited other churches as a guest soloist.
Thorough the years, she was involved with the PTA, Athletic Association, and Band Boosters of Clear Fork High School, as well as an avid fan of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed working in the Elections, serving as a poll worker for decades. Kathleen enjoyed walking in God’s beautiful nature and, most of all, serving her Amazing God.
Those left to cherish her memories are her beloved husband and caretaker of 62 years, Roger Dean Fraley; son, Roger Dwight (Sherry) Fraley of Rock Creek, WV; daughter, Kathleen Denese (Tim) Dillon of Brook Park, OH; grandchildren, Jennifer Sue (Tommy) Williams of Selma, NC, Kelli Dawn (Matt) Williams of Colcord, WV, Roger Dwight II (Pam) Fraley, Adam Joseph (Amanda) Fraley, and Emily Leeanne Fraley, all of Rock Creek, WV; Kelly R. Dillon (Randy) Abood of Olmsted Township, OH, Matt (Angie) Dillon of Lima, OH, and Audrey Elizabeth Dillon of Brook Park, OH.
Great-grandchildren, Caleb Adam and Kate Elisabeth Fraley of Rock Creek, WV, Tyler Matthew and Kaylee Ann Dillon of Lima, OH, and Braydon Scott Abood of Olmsted Falls, OH; sister-in-law, Margaret Lois Young of Richlands, IN; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and a “special daughter,” Diana Dillon-McClure.

Herbert Curtis Graham
SKIN FORK — Herbert Curtis Graham, 85, of Skin Fork, WV, went home to be with the Lord on December 24, 2013, at Wyoming Continuous Care, New Richmond, following a long illness.
Born November 23, 1928, at Herndon, WV, he was the son of the late William McKinley Graham and Letha Lusk Graham.
Herbert was a 40-year employee of Itmann Coal Company, from which he retired. He was a member of UMWA and was a veteran of the Korean War. Herbert was a member of Cooper Memorial Baptist Church, Skin Fork. He loved going to church, being with family and friends. He was an avid coon hunter who loved his dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Wilma Lee Graham; a sister, Ada Cook; and three brothers, Alvis, Willie and Oley Graham.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wanda McNeely Graham; 2 daughters, Elizabeth Dian Kennedy and her husband, Terry, of Harper Heights, Beckley, and Rebecca Sue Brown and her husband, David, of Skin Fork; 5 sisters, Lola Snow of Bristol, VA, Elsie Cooper and her husband, Billy Joe, of Skin Fork, Carol McNeely and her husband, Wandas, of Cross Lanes, Joyce Lilly and her husband, Ira, of Jumping Branch, and Retha Mobley and her husband, Jerry, of Cincinnati, OH; 4 grandsons, Greg Brown and his wife, Lisa, Johnny Brown and his wife, Racheal, Donald (Donnie) Kennedy and Terry Kennedy, Jr.; A granddaughter, Billie Nicole Kennedy; 3 great-grandsons, Remington, Matthew and Jaxton Brown; 2 great-granddaughters, Angel Scarbro and RyLee Brown. HINTON — Alice Faye Lilly, 66, of 402 Cedar Ave., Hinton, died Monday, December 22, 2013, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville following a long illness.
Born September 17, 1947, in Hinton, she was the daughter of Clarence Ashby Wiseman of Hinton and the late Goldie Marie Rakes Wiseman.
Alice was an aide at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale and also worked as a waitress at Pipestem State Park. She was a member of Little Wolf Creek Baptist Church at Buck.
She was preceded in death by a son, Timmy Blevins.
Survivors include her husband, Cline Lilly. A brother, Charles Wiseman and wife Ruby of Hinton. Three sisters, Norma Gunter and husband Bob and Sherry Gwinn and husband Chuck both of Hinton and Debbie Wiseman of Beckley. Several nieces and nephews, including Ellen Samples, Victoria Pickett, Charlene Wiseman, Dana Whittaker, Demi Whittaker, Elaina, Chassity and Bailey, and an adopted daughter, Amber Brandon.

Over 2,000 years ago the world celebrated the birth of a child, Jesus Christ, the hope of the world. Also, 91 years ago another sweet child was born, Thelma Lively, a woman that would be the inspiration for many. She was raised on Sewell Mountain, the daughter of Toby and Daisy McClung. Later, she became a successful business woman in Rainelle. For over 40 years she owned and operated many businesses, namely Thelma’s Restaurant in Rainelle, Thelma’s Chicken Hut and the Tastee Freeze in Charmco. She touched so many lives with her hard work ethic, sweet spirit, bright blue eyes and cheerful smile.
On Christmas morning, surrounded by her children and grandchildren she went to see Jesus and celebrate her new life, her eternal life, the best Christmas gift of all!
She is joining her husband Arnold B. Lively and son Carl “Butch” Lively and many family members in heaven.
Those left to honor her memory are her sister Bernice “Bunny” Calkins. Her daughters, Myrna “Jeanie” Smith (Gary E. Smith), Lynda Sue Johnson (Charles Piner), and son Arnold D. Lively (Millie Lively) and daughter-in-law Jane M. Lively. Grandchildren Crystal White (Tim White), Steve Smith, Shelly Brown (Luke Brown), Tim Lively, Scott Lively, Marshall Lively, Jeff Johnson (Tracie Johnson), Lori Johnson (Paul Baucom) and stepgranddaughter Leah Taylor (Greg Taylor). Great-grandchildren Bethany Shetler (Jim Shetler), Timmy White (Jessica White), Justin White, James Alvis, Garrett Alvis, Noah Brown, stepgrandson Logan Brown, Cailyn Lively, Sam Johnson, Ava Johnson, stepgrandsons Korbin Taylor and Kaden Taylor and great-great-grandson Jackson Shetler.
The family would like to thank all of Mom/Nanny’s caregivers, especially Sandy, for their love and special care they provided all these years. Thank you also to the extended family and friends for your thoughts and prayers throughout Nanny’s illness. They are appreciated and felt.

Frankie McClung Meadows
RUPERT — Frankie McClung Meadows, 83, of Rupert, WV, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley after a very brief illness.
Born on September 12, 1930, in Rupert, she was the daughter of the late Oather H. and Nina I. McClung of Rupert.
Frankie was a very special, genuine lady to all who knew her. You never had to wonder what she was thinking. If you were in her presence, she would tell you! She loved spending time with her immediate and extended family and her incredible “cooking skills” were known far and wide, especially the “chicken dumplings” and “sweet rolls.” Frankie had a deep based faith in the Lord and traveled often to listen to gospel music about the Lord she loved.
In addition to her parents, Frankie is preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses C. Meadows, and three siblings: Oather H. McClung, Jr., Dennis McClung, and Dorothy McClung.
Survivors include two daughters: Tanya Meadows Duke and spouse Bruce of Hillsville, VA, Lori Meadows Moller of Bloomingdale, OH; five grandchildren: Christopher Duke with the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart, GA, Justin Meadows of Las Vegas, NV, Flor Moller of Atlanta, GA, Jennifer and Jonathan Moller of Bloomingdale, OH; four sisters: Frances Cales of Winchester, VA, Florence Anderson of Ravenswood, WV, Naomi Pittsenbarger and husband Bill of Summerville, SC, and Martha McClung of Rupert, WV; four brothers: Don McClung and wife Deanna of Prosperity, WV, David McClung and wife Terry of Sebastian, FL, Delmas McClung and wife June of McLeansville, NC, and Larry McClung and wife Janey of Murrells Inlet, SC; ten nieces, eleven nephews, and many great-nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will precede the services from 11 to 1 on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle. Services will be 1 p.m. at the church with Pastor Fred Fryar officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Cecil Ray Murdock
Cecil Ray Murdock, age 87, of White Oak, West Virginia, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Tuesday, December 24, 2013.
Born on August 14, 1926, in Middleton, WV, he was the son of the late Milton Murdock and Nannie Winston Murdock.
Mr. Murdock was a retired coal miner with 43 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA and was a U.S. Navy Veteran during WWII.
Mr. Murdock was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dempsey Greer, Dolphus Greer, Johnny Greer, and by a sister Helen McDaniel.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years in which he passed away on their anniversary, Lois Ruby Thompson Murdock.
A son Phillip Murdock and his wife Jo Ellen of White Oak, WV, five daughters, Anna F. Murdock, Regina Murdock, and Mary Yvonne Murdock all of White Oak, Elizabeth “Libby” Blair and her husband Buster “Dick” of Jemison, Alabama, and Michelle Ratcliff and her husband Shawn of White Oak.
Five grandsons, Joseph Blair, Joshua Blair, Stephen Amon, Zachary Amon, Colten Helmandollar, and a granddaughter Heather Ratcilff.
Six great-grandchildren, Jade and Madison Amon, Joseph “Lil Man” Blair, Vicki Blair, and Cayden Helmandollar, and Elijah “Eli” Amon.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, December 29, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Benny Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Maxine Raye Martin Pendleton
Maxine Raye Martin Pendleton, 81, of Beaver, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House after a brief but brave fight against liver cancer.
Born September 3, 1932, in Glen Morgan, she was the daughter of the late Carlos and Nora Smith Martin.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Benjamin Sweeney, her second husband, Morton Pendleton, and her son, Terry Sweeney.
Survivors include her 3 daughters, Deborah Salango and her husband, Ronnie, of Daniels, Benita Wiseman and her husband, Steve, of Shady Spring, and Angela Pendleton and her husband, Timmy, of Shady Spring; her brother Jennings Martin (Patty) of Glen Morgan, and 2 sisters, Connie Ward (Don) of Glen Morgan, and Arlene Yarbrough of South Carolina.
She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Tim Salango of Morgantown, Ben Salango (Tera) of Charleston, Kristy Salango-Smith (Matt) of Charleston, Patrick Joseph Salango of Charleston, Doug Wiseman of Beaver, Kim Meador (Jesse) of Cool Ridge, Natalie Wiseman of Shady Spring, and Ayrella and Garren Armentrout of Shady Spring; 3 great-grandchildren, Morgan Salango, T.J. and Caden; and all of her pets.
Maxine worked for 20 years for Wheat First Securities in Beckley; she enjoyed working with animals, painting, sewing, and traveling. She loved spending time with her family. Maxine attended the Camp Creek Community Church.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Russell Ellison officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may gather with the family Friday from 12 to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dr. Darrell Prater
Doctor Darrell Prater went to be with his Lord on December 24, 2013. Darrell was a wonderful Man of God who loved his family, his church, community and his job. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Darrell was preceded in death by his Father Walter Prater, his Mother Herma Jordan Prater, his sister Beulah Prater Fewell, and his brother Pat Taylor.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Joyce Overbaugh Prater, his son Keith Prater and his wife Tracy, his son Reverend Mark Prater and his wife Teresa, his grandchildren Nathan, Michael, and Cora, his brother Pete and sister Belinda, as well as many other family members.
The family asks that you join in the celebration of his life and legacy. We know that he is rejoicing with all his many family and friends that have gone before him. We know this is not the end but just the beginning for his eternal reward and we will see him again.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 28, at High Lawn Funeral Chapel, Oak Hill, with Darrell’s son Rev. Mark Prater officiating, assisted by Randel Kinder. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

John Lawrence Puckett
LANSING — John Lawrence Puckett, 77, of Lansing, WV, departed this life Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley from complications of Parkinson’s disease, surrounded by his family.
Born August 9, 1936, at Lansing, he was the son of the late John and Thelma Puckett Kincaid.
Mr. Puckett was raised in Lansing, lived and worked for 48 years in Charleston, then returned to his home place after retiring from CAMC, and Self Employed Master Carpenter.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Juanita Gray and Mary Clark, and brother Robert Puckett.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years Mary M. Puckett; two daughters and three grandchildren, Sandra Lynn Roberts and son Frank M. Roberts IV of Florida, Melissa Gwen Taylor and daughter Katy P. Taylor and son, Augustus B. Taylor, and Melissa’s fiancé, Aaron L. Smith, all of Charleston, and five sisters: Delma Bailes of Florida, Annabelle Hodge of Lansing, Erma Shannon of Buffalo, WV, Barbara Marty of Victor and Linda Arbaugh of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Lansing Cemetery in Lansing. Burial will follow at the cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Hayes officiating.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 27, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
