James Evans ‘Slim’ Bandy Sr.

James Evans “Slim” Bandy Sr., 79, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013.

Born March 28, 1934, in Hayneville, Alabama, he was the son of the late James Ellis and Ella Mae Bandy.

Mr. Bandy was a retired, disabled veteran of the Korean War. He was an assistant to the Gospel Singaleers, as well as an avid fisherman and a devout Flying Eagles Basketball fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Gracie Saunders Bandy; daughter, Diana C. Bandy; grandson, Antonio Mitchell; three brothers, Eugene, David, and John Bandy; sister, Willie Ann Bandy Moss; and stepson, Jimmy L. Shannon.

Those left to cherish precious memories are three sons, James E. “Chuckie” (Trina) Bandy Jr. of Roanoke, VA, Lamont G. (Catherine) Mitchell of Charleston, WV, and Raymond L. (Carla) Mitchell of West Memphis, AR; two daughters, Angela S. (William) Nichols and Sonja R. Mitchell, both of Charleston, WV; two brothers, Cephas L. (Frances) Bandy of Indianapolis, IN, and James Ellis (Janice) Bandy III of Murietta, CA; one sister, Dortha R. Dennis of Philadelphia, PA; stepchildren, Michael Harbison of Marietta, GA, Eric Harbison of Antioch, CA, Allen Harbison of Charlotte, NC, James Harbison of Tampa, FL, Annette Harbison of Charleston, WV, Robin Harbison of Beckley, WV, and Linda Shannon of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Martha E. Bandy of Beckley, WV; twenty grandchildren; forty-seven great-great-grandchildren; loving and loyal companion, Ms. Dicie Spencer, caregivers, Glenda Wade, Lydia Spencer, and nephew, Dallas Bandy, and a host of other nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 Eighth St., Beckley, with Revs. David Allen, Thomas Bradley, and Roosevelt Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dewey Cromer, 68, of Beckley, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013.

DUNBAR — Mr. Yauncey Freeman, 56, of Dunbar, formerly of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Faith Tabernacle Church, 135 S. Court St., Fayetteville, with Pastors Byron Freeman and Sancerria Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald ‘Duck’ Lee Graybeal

KEITH — Donald “Duck” Lee Graybeal, 72 of Keith, died Friday, May 31, 2013.

A visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the Sulphur Springs, Cemetery, Franklin, Ky.

Nina R. Weakley Hooper

LEWISBURG — Nina R. Weakley Hooper, 80, of Lewisburg, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013.

Patricia Carolyn (Hicks) Lilly

On June 1st, 2013, Patricia Carolyn (Hicks) Lilly left her earthly home for her Heavenly home to be with her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.

She was born on April 8, 1948, at Slab Fork, WV.

Preceding her in death were her devoted mother and father, Amos and Nora Hicks; her beloved husband, Rev. Henry H. Lilly; her brothers, Billy, Thomas Eugene (Buddy), and Ronald; her sisters, Loretta and Serena; and her son-in-law, Oakley Blevins.

Those left to cherish her memory include her most beloved daughter, Patricia Marie (Lilly) Blevins, and her brother Larry and his wife Bonnie.

Patricia was a LPN who worked in the OB wing of BARH. She taught Sunday school at the Soak Creek Gospel Tabernacle.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Dean Adams officiating. She will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may gather with the family Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Katherine Lynn Miller, 54, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013.

Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the Adwell Cemetery, Ronceverte, with Pastor Stewart Farley officiating. There will be no visitation.

TRAVELLER’S REPOSE — Jessie Brown Beard Powell, 98, of Traveller’s Repose, died Sunday, June 2, 2013.

Thomas Barron Smallwood, 41, of Beaver, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013.

Morton G. ‘Morty’ Smith

HICO — Morton G. “Morty” Smith, 55, of Hico, West Virginia, passed away early Sunday morning, June 2, 2013, at his home in Hico, following a short illness. Born June 17, 1957, at Gauley Bridge, he was the son of the late Morton Givens Smith, Sr., and Dolores Lee Wood Violet and stepfather John H. Violet of Springfield, Ohio. Morty worked as a diesel mechanic for a utility company and was of the Protestant Faith. He loved talking on his Ham Radio, and taking scenic photos outdoors. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Frances Smith.

Survivors include his companion: Nina Bonanno of Hico and her children, and her father Hobart Rogers and wife Katherine and their children. Mother: Dolores Wood Violet and stepfather John of Springfield, Ohio. Brother: David Gorman Smith of Hico, WV. Several cousins and other extended family and many, many friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Ansted.

Entombment will follow at Chapel of Rest Mausoleum in Victor, WV.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Ansted.

David Ray Thompson (Crockett)

GLEN FORK — David Ray Thompson (Crockett), 60, passed into eternal life Friday, May 31, 2013, from a massive heart attack.

He was born April 8, 1953, in Mullens, WV, to the late Arthur and Lilly Thompson.

David was a great man to many people. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a retired union coal miner with 25 1/2 years of service at Harris Number 2 mines (Peabody Coal). David was baptized, saved, and gave his life to the Lord several years ago. He was a member of Ark of Safety Church in Glen Fork. He always made it a point to put others before himself. He loved the mountains, fishing, hunting, and going to church.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by two sons, Quentin Ray Sartin and Paul Curtis “Peewee” Sartin; a daughter, Tawnya Renee Sartin; a brother, Roger; a sister, Ethel; two grandchildren; and a beloved cousin, Tonto Bailey.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ledema Thompson, with whom he would’ve celebrated his 31st wedding anniversary on June 6th; daughters, Ila Marie Sartin and companion, Mark Waugh, of Columbus, OH, and Wendy Jude of Logan; grandchildren, Billi Jean Sartin, Samantha Sartin, Sheree Barnes, Kristian Sartin, Paul David, Ray Sartin, Tyler Workman, and Michael Barnes; great-grandchildren, Tashawna Dale, Collin, Clinton, Trenton, and Serenity; six sisters, three brothers and their spouses; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Neil Farley.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Ark of Safety Church, Glen Fork, with the Rev. Ernest Francis officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Fork Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, and Wednesday, June 5, at the church.

Pallbearers will be Paul David Sartin, Tyler Workman, Josh Francis, Paul Brown, Garrett Francis, and Allen Blankenship.
