On Tuesday, May 28th, 2013, our most cherished, Jacky Lee “Jack” Chapman, of  Shady Spring, passed away at Pine Lodge following a short illness. He was shy one day of his 77th birthday.

Born at Beckley, he was the oldest of two sons, born to the late Raymond Edward and Thelma Irene Shanks Chapman. His brother, John Earl Chapman and his wife, Glenna of Eustis, Fla. survive.

“Jack” as he was affectionately known, spent his childhood at Beckley, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1955. After graduation, he entered the US Air Force, where he served four years.

Jack was of an entrepreneurial spirit. His first venture was with General Heating, he then became a flight instructor with Buddy Cottle’s company, Air Transport, eventually becoming a corporate pilot for Elgin International. Jack owned his own construction company, Design Industries. Intrigued by radiant heat, he became a factory rep with Reflect-O- Ray and Space Ray. Jack was very successful in these ventures.

For the past 54 years, Jack has been married to the former Ann Burton of Kentucky. Jack and Ann were blessed with four children, Karen Sue Maynard and her husband, Roger of Hardy, Va., Raymond Keith Chapman and his wife, Bev of Palmyra, Va., John Kevin Chapman of Jumping Branch. Sadly, their youngest, Mitchell Kent died in 2001 at the age of 26. Jack and Ann worshiped at Daniels Bible Church. They have made their home in Shady Spring since 1979. Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was the doting grandfather of John, Joseph, Kendra, Carrie, Chelsa, Zac and Tyler.

Jack was very fond of Ann’s family, the Burtons and his extended family. Among his relatives, he had a high regard for his first cousin, Betty Harvey who passed away in 2012.
