Eula Edith Woolwine Barnhouse

ANSTED — Eula Edith Woolwine Barnhouse, 93, of Ansted passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Pastor Ron George and Preacher Jack Eades officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum at Victor. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel.

Louise Boothe

PETERSTOWN — Louise Boothe, 93, of Peterstown, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Appalachian Christian Center, Peterstown, with Pastor Michael Biggs officiating. Burial will follow at the Peterstown Cemetery, Giles County, Va. Friends may call from noon until time of services at the church.

Betty Lura ‘Lou’ Brumfield

BRUNO — Betty Lura “Lou” Goodman-Brumfield, 87, of Bruno, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 6, 2012, after a long illness.

She was born August 5, 1925, at Christian, a daughter of the late James Edward and Lottie Toler Goodman.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Clayton “Zeke” Brumfield; two sons, Howard Lee Brumfield and Joe Randolph Brumfield; four grandsons, Scotty Spears, Calvin Stewart Spears, Johnathan Dene Miller, and Joe Brumfield; five brothers, Harry Goodman, Robert Bud Goodman, Eugene Goodman, Elmer Goodman, and Bill Goodman–McQuithy; six sisters, Nina Grimmett, Nellie Likens, Sybil Plymale, Alberta Combs, Mabel Goodman, and Tressie Goodman.

Betty was of the Pentecostal Faith and an avid member of the working community with various job titles. Her performances were at Nuttin Fancy Restaurant, Colonial Room Restaurant, Browning Dust, and Arlie’s. Her favorite trade was child care. She touched many young lives by teaching them to love, forgive, and cherish family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are her five children, William R. (Geri) Brumfield of Sterling Heights, MI, Lila Brumfield of Oceana, Tishie Ann (Larry Dene) Brumfield-Miller of Oceana, Clayton E. (Belinda) Brumfield, Jr., of Christian, and Craig (Gail) Brumfield of Bruno; one brother, Bob Goodman of Newark, OH; one sister, Lola Goodman of Christian; two daughters-in-law, Anna Brumfield of Howell, MI, and Dorothy Brumfield of Logan; 27 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren all of whom were cherished and close to her heart; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man with Pastor Rick Proffitt officiating. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services also.

Pall Bearers will be Clayton Brumfield, Jr., Hunk Goodman, Chris Stone, Chantz Trent, Clay Brumfield, Thurman Goodman, Jr., and Troy Goodman.

Betty’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to her granddaughters that took special care of her, Tishie Michell Brumfield-Stone and April Brumfield-Browning. The family would also like to thank Dignity Hospice, ARH Home Health, Dr. Michael Muscari, and Jennifer Stewart, PA of Family Healthcare Associates, and to everyone that has supported and prayed during this critical time.

Nadine Gardner

MAPLE FORK — Nadine Gardner, age 67, of Maple Fork, WV, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

Born on April 11, 1945, at Slab Fork, WV, she was the daughter of the late Doris Cozart and Charlotte Minerva Acord Cozart.

Mrs. Gardner was a homemaker, and was a member of the Terry Independent Christian Church at Terry, WV. She had made her home at Maple Fork for the past year, having previously resided at Prince, WV. She enjoyed the outdoors in her spare time and loved flowers.

Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by siblings, Florence Collins, Richard and Alvin Cozart, and Charlotte Cozart.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 28 years, Donald Gardner. Her children: Tammy Ann Beckett of Shady Spring, Virginia Sauls of Maple Fork, Robin Meadows and her husband Andy of Cool Ridge, Deborah Tolliver and her husband Walter, of Pineville, WV.

Brothers, Frank Cozart of Michigan, Sheldon Cozart and his wife Frances of North Carolina, and Leo Cozart of MacArthur, WV.

Sisters, Mary Hutchinson and her husband Cody of MacArthur, Yancy Charlene Roark and her husband Roger of Beaver.

Grandchildren, Bobby Sevey, Samantha Haney, Sarah Beckett, Nicole Blevins, Justin Blevins, Jessica Massie, Tabitha Sauls, James Sauls, Nadine Bailey, Kristen Davis, Kayla Adkins, Tyler Meadows, Morgan Meadows, Madison Meadows, Whitney Shrewsberry, Kimberly Smith, and Shawn Tolliver. Great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Hannah, Conner, Jacob, Seth, James, Wilton, and Hunter.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at noon with Rev. Gene Snuffer and Rev. Ronnie Hall officiating. Burial will follow at the Harrah Cemetery at Backus Mountain, WV. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Charles Edward Garten

November 14, 1948 ~ October 1, 2012

DUDLEY, N.C. — Charles Edward Garten, 63, of Dudley passed away at his residence Monday morning surrounded by his family. He is the son of the late Herman and Edith Arthur Garten, and was the husband of Roy Ann Garten. Mr. Garten was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mt. Olive, and a member of The Riders of The Cross motorcycle club.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 13, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Doug Bartlett and Pastor Glenn Mills officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Garten is survived by 2 sons, David Garten and wife, Melissa, of Surf City, NC, and Chris Clark and wife, Stephanie, of Mullens, WV; a daughter, Lori Suzanne Panos and husband, Brett, of Moncks Corner, SC; a brother, Kenneth Garten of East Orange, NJ; three sisters, Patty Garten of Beckley, WV, Gloria Hager of Oak Hill, WV, and Clara Ayers and husband, Bill, of Indiana; a special niece, Pamela Lilly of Oak Hill, WV; 15 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

James Houston Harris

James Houston Harris, 88, of Sullivan Road, Glen Morgan, passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012.

Drema E. Stevens Madera

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — Ms. Drema E. Stevens Madera, 61, of Willimantic, CT, formerly of Beckley, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012.

Born October 12, 2012, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Catherine E. Stevens of Beckley and the late Robert L. Stevens.

A 1969 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, she loved arts and crafts and writing books. Her first book “Three Wishes for Christmas” was published in November 2007. Her lifelong passion was to write children’s books.

In addition to her mother those left to cherish precious memories are her siblings, Rose M. French, Shirley J. Hassler and Ronald L. Stevens, all of Beckley; nephews, Keith P., Sean M. and Timothy L. Stevens, all of Beckley, and Twyman Hunt of Canton, OH; niece, Clarice Cosby of Whipple, WV; five great-nieces; best friend, Luz Gonzalez of Willimantic, CT; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at the Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel with Rev. Abner Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral parlor.

Kenneth ‘Tommy’ Martin

Kenneth Martin, 60, of Beckley passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012.

A memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 11 at the Lester Church of God with Pastor Ernest Francis officiating. Friends may gather from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Mary Filipek Peelish

Mary Filipek Peelish, age 93, of Glen Morgan, WV, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2012, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels, WV.

Born on July 19, 1919, in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Anton and Nellie Byk Filipek.

Mary was a devoted homemaker, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter “Bill” Peelish, a brother, Joseph Filipek, a sister, “Jenny” Humphrey, and a grandson, Michael Marinch.

Those left to cherish her memory include three children, Florence Marinch and her husband Steve of Battle Creek, Mich., Walter Peelish and his wife Kay of Shady Spring, and Ronald Peelish and his wife Jennifer of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Five sisters, Stella Novak, Lilly Janice, Rosie Bozo, Blanche Champer, and Stephanie Steele. Four brothers, Walter, Eddie, Theodore, and Andrew Filipek. Eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins are also among her survivors.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at the St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Samuel Sacus as the Celebrant. A Rite of Committal will follow at the Mount Calvary Addition of Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may call at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, where a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. with Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Francis deSales Catholic School, 614 S. Oakwood Avenue, Beckley, WV 25801, in memory of Mrs. Peelish.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Floretta Smith

Floretta Souder Smith, 95, passed away at Bowers Hospice House on Saturday, October 6, 2012. She was born at Long Branch, Fayette County, West Virginia, on September 15, 1917. Mrs. Smith was one of thirteen children born to the late Rev. James I. Souder and Lula Hendrickson Souder.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1936. She attended Beckley College and worked in the office of Prosecuting Attorney Warren Thornhill. A resident of Beckley since the age of 8, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beckley and the Joyful Life Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Howard Smith, owner of Beckley Cabinet Company, and her wonderful daughter-in-law Nancy Moore Smith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by brothers Kelly, Fred, Hallie, Jack, Clyde and Eugene Souder and sisters Lena Humphrey, Ollie Richmond, Mabel Slemp, Daisy Hewlett, Eloise Meadows, and Maxine Whitlow.

Those left to cherish her memories are her son William K. Smith and companion Tennis Parrish of Beaver, and daughter Cathy Taylor and companion Bob Matson of Smyrna, Ga. Also two grandchildren: David Smith (Traci) and Kelly Bragg (Reuben) and four great-grandchildren: Patrick and Victoria Smith and R.J. and Colby Bragg. She also leaves behind sister-in-law Anna Marie Smith who provided comfort and care in her final days and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their appreciation for care given by the staffs at Bowers Hospice House, Raleigh General Hospital, and Heartland. A special thank you to caretaker Edie Miller.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Phil Smith officiating. Visitation will take place 2 hours before the funeral. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Bowers Hospice House, the First Baptist Church of Beckley, Joyful Life Baptist Church, or the Raleigh County Public Library.
