Jackie Eugene ‘Hager’ Adkins

Jackie Eugene “Hager” Adkins, age 58, of Terry, WV, passed away at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 8, 2012.

Born on December 17, 1953, at Terry, he was the son of the late Eddie Adkins and Mary Opal Hall Adkins.

Mr. Adkins was a retired coal miner, and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Terry Christian Church, and a lifelong resident of Terry. Mr. Adkins enjoyed spending time with family and friends, listening to music, and riding motorcycles.

He was preceded in death by children, Jason Adkins and Stephanie Adkins, a brother, Eddie Adkins, and by two sisters, Wilma Semsick and Ruth Gillian.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his companion of 16 years, Carolyn Sawyers; a daughter Jaclyn Adkins of Terry; Three brothers, Roy Adkins and his wife Sheila of Piney View, Johnny Adkins and his wife Brenda of Piney View, Billy Joe Adkins and his wife Lottie of Piney View. Two sisters Judy Sadler and her husband Sam of Crab Orchard, and Rose Berry and her husband Joe of Beckley.

He was a pawpaw to Trevor, McKinzie, Jayden, and Tyler. Carolyn’s children whom he thought of as his own, James Sawyers and his wife Mary of Danese, Virgil Sawyers and his wife Kristy of Oak Hill. He dearly loved his uncle and aunt, Rev. Gene Hall and the late Gladys Hall of Beckley. A sister-in-law, Linda Adkins, and a special nephew Mark, along with several other nieces and nephews, are also among his survivors.

Committal services will be conducted for Jackie “Hager” Adkins on Monday, November 12, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Terry Christian Church at Terry, WV, with Rev. Gene Hall and Rev. Ronnie Hall officiating. Burial will follow at the Adkins Family Cemetery at Terry, WV. There will be no visitation. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Ernest Clyde Bailey

BEACH CITY, Ohio — Ernest Clyde Bailey, 82, of Beach City died Thursday, November 8, 2012, at his home.

He retired from Union Drawn Steel in Massillon after 32 years of service.

Born June 27, 1930, in Glenfork, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Henry and Mabel Massey Bailey. Ernie was also preceded in death by his wife Mary H. “Libby” Bailey on October 22, 2005; sister, Nina Luger, and his brother, Juddy Bailey.

Ernie was an Army veteran of the Korean War having served his county during the beginning stages of the conflict. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Ernie will be sadly missed by his children, Cindy (Jim) Davidson of Park City, Utah, Lisa (Steve) Sprouse of Tiskilwa, Illinois, and Ernest (Debra) Bailey of Lake Dallas, Texas; sisters, Dorothy Simmons of Beckley, West Virginia, and Eunice (Vernon) Quantz of Covington, Virginia; brother, Ray Bailey of Covington; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 13, at 1 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Strasburg with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends can call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Cerling Bamon Bowling Jr.

MULLENS — Cerling Bamon Bowling, Jr., 82, of 911 Moran Ave., Mullens, WV, born July 5, 1930, in Hiawatha, West Virginia, entered heavenly eternal life on November 8, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House. He was the son of the late Cerling Bamon Bowling, Sr., and Josephine Gertrude Hale Bowling.

Known by all as “Junior,” he was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Joyce Anne Robertson Bowling, in 1992. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a firefighter in Texas, Alaska, and Washington, DC. After moving back to West Virginia, he worked predominantly as a meat cutter at Thomas Grocery before he and Joyce opened J and J Supermarket in Mullens. At the time of their retirement in 1990, they owned J and J’s and Bowling’s convenience store and restaurant. His sons consider him a great father, an avid golfer, and an excellent cook. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Up until the time of his death, he volunteered as golf ranger at Twin Falls State Park where he considered his co-workers and golf buddies his second family. He was a member of Mullens United Methodist Church, Mullens Masonic Lodge No. 151, and Admiral No. 50 of the Royal Arch Masons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Louise and Mildred Vorhees Bowling, who were killed with their father in a car accident in 1945. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother Claude Wiley and his dear brother James Robert Bowling.

Survivors include sons, Ronald Bowling and his wife Susan of Mullens, WV, Donald Bowling and his wife Debbie of Pineville, WV, and Greg Bowling and his wife Jennifer of Milton, WV; grandchildren, Lee Anne Bowling-Angle and her husband Billy of Clifton Forge, VA, Cinda Hewitt and her husband Jay of South Charleston, WV, Luke and Erin Bowling of Milton, WV, and Brett Bowling of Pineville, WV; and great-grandchildren, Savannah and Maria Angle of Clifton Forge, VA. Others survivors include a sister, Sylvia Jean Flanigan and her husband Richard of Princeton, WV, and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Scott Durham, Dr. Tony Flaim, Dave Harsh, Ken McBride, Gary Runion, David “Bugs” Stover, Robert Toler, and Mike Wikel.

A visitation will be held at the United Methodist Church in Mullens, WV, on Monday, November 12, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for family and friends and a funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with Reverend Earl Arthur and Mitch Whitt officiating. Burial services with military rites will be held at the Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens at Princeton, WV, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801, and the Mullens United Methodist Church, 118 Guyandotte Avenue, Mullens, WV 25882.

Donnie Mae Daniel Clay

Donnie Mae Daniel Clay, 78, of Beckley, passed away Friday, November 9, 2012. Born August 13, 1934, at Sandlick, WV, she was the daughter of the late Wilford and Clarcie Smith Daniel. Donnie was a retired Postmaster at Glen Daniel, WV. She was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Wilford Daniel, Jr., William Ray Daniel, and sisters, Betty Jean McGinnis and Gladys Daniel.

She is survived by her husband Calfee M. Clay; daughters, Marsha Archie and husband Steven of Harper, Sharon Adams and husband Larry of Glen Daniel; sons, Eugene Clay and wife Sandy of Dameron, WV, Gregory Clay and wife Melissa of Beckley and Brian Clay of Beckley; grandchildren, Bradley, Blake, Nicholas and Morgan Clay; sisters, Virginia Stewart of Fairdale and Margie Phipps of Ohio; brothers, James Daniel and Bobby Daniel of Sandlick.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2012, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wayne Nutter officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.

Alice Marie Marcum

KOPPERSTON — Alice Marie Marcum, 71, passed away Friday, November 9, 2012.

Born October 25, 1941, in Welch, WV, she was the daughter of Carrie Marie Cook Williams and the late French “Chubby” Williams.

Marie enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Addie Glee.

Those left to cherish her memory are her mother, Carrie Williams; her husband, Lonnie Marcum; daughters, Trena Marcum Brotherton and husband, Michael, of China Grove, NC, and Cindie Marcum Rose and Corbett of Statesville, NC; and grandchildren, Derek Rose and Hanna Brotherton.

A celebration of Marie’s life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. James Hamrick officiating. Interment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may call 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Louise B. Reeves

Louise B. Reeves, 80 years young, passed away into eternal rest on November 1, 2012, after a short illness at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born to the late Cuthbert A Gunnoe and Clara Mae Dolin, October 27, 1932, in Montcoal, WV. She lived her childhood life in Boone County, WV, with her parents and seven brothers and two sisters.

She was proceeded in death by her brother Louie Gunnoe and sister Chloe Gates.

She loved to travel, and the Gunnoe Family reunions, the one thing that she enjoyed the most was her passion for elderly care, which she did for 30 plus years.

Louise is survived by her husband Jerry; 3 daughters: Nancy Breeden, of Myrtle Beach, SC; Diane Pritchett, of California; and Jolene Durbin, of Placentia, Calif. She also is survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 4 brothers and 1 sister.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Will announce in the date, time and place on her Memorial Page. Louise’s remains are interred in Beckley, WV.

Danny L. Stafford

WYCO — Danny Lee Stafford, 55, of Wyco, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born February 8, 1957, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Stella Marie Sadler Stafford and James Ira Stafford, Jr., of Man.

Mr. Stafford was a former coal miner. He attended the Rhodell Church of God and was well loved by his family and friends.

In addition to his mother, he is also preceded in death by his grandparents, James Ira and Zenith Stafford and Leonard and Laura Sadler.

Those left to cherish his memory include his father, James Ira Stafford, Jr., and his wife, Margeret, of Man; four brothers, Michael and Patricia Stafford of Wyco with whom he made his home, Jim and Lynn Stafford of Sharon, WI, Lenny Stafford and Sherry of Pennsylvania, and Joe and Tina Stafford of Man; three sisters, Tina Heatherman and her husband, Charles, of Cyclone, Sharon Lester and her husband, Frank, of Man, and Evelyn Stafford of South Carolina; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012, at the Rhodell Church of God with Rev. Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
