Louella O. Saunders Amar

Louella O. Saunders Amar, 82, of 221 Glen Ave., Beckley, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, following a long battle with cancer.

She was born Jan. 28, 1930, in Cabell County, Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Lucy Ann Elizabeth Saunders and Harry E. Draper.

Louella attended Morton Reeves Elementary and Stratton High School. After graduating, she furthered her education at Bennett College for girls, then graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bluefield State College, majoring in Education where she became a member of A.K.A. Sorority along with other various activities. She was the first black civilian to teach on a military base school in Fort Polk, La. She taught elementary school in Helen, Glen White and Piney Oaks; during this time Louella continued her education and became a certified Social Worker and retired from DHHR as a job developer. She spent many years as Ambassador for Christ and a community activist. She was instrumental in groups such as NAACP, Prayer Warrior and Southern WV Multicultural Center, Beckley. Louella was a faithful member of St. Paul Baptist Church, she loved the Lord and worked diligently in church organization; also she was an avid and dedicated member.

Louella was preceded in death by one aunt, Mary Jane Quicksey; two brothers, Roy (Apple-Daddy) Robertson and William (Sonny) Fullen; and one grandson, William N. Abrams.

Louella leaves to cherish her sweet memories: her husband, Samuel N. Amar; two daughters, Sharon Abrams and Carolyn (Schotzie) Amar; two sons, Grady and Bernard Amar, all of Beckley. Grandchildren: Leteshia Abrams, Kenyata Amar of Beckley, India Hutchinson of Detroit, Mich., and the special pumpkin pie the only great-grandchild, Ke’Yleauna Amar of Beckley; former son-in-law, Leonard (Robin) Abrams of Raleigh, W.Va.; and a former daughter-in-law, Rosalind Amar of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Shirley Pannell of New York, N.Y., and Loraine Fullen of Bronx, N.Y.; nephew, William (Sonni Boy) Fullen of Texas; two nieces, Gina Fullen of Bronx, N.Y., and Ivy Fullen and her son of New York, N.Y.; two cousins, Gregory and Geoff Thomas of Detroit, Mich.; and a host of friends and family.

We would like to thank Hospice of Southern WV and Vickie Olliver for the care of our Mother.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at St. Paul Baptist Church, 129 Rice St., Beckley, with the Rev. Walter M. Leach officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.

The family will meet friends at 103 Grant Avenue in Beckley.
