Linda Lou McDaniel Bowles

PRINCE — Linda Lou McDaniel Bowles, 70, of Prince, passed away on March 4, 2014 at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born May 4, 1943 in Piney View, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Johnny Mays McDaniel and Rosie Helen Greer McDaniel.

Linda enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family, and listening to gospel music. She was passionate about her garden including roses and dahlias.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 35 years, David Clyde Bowles Sr.; precious son, David Clyde Bowles Jr.; infant sister, Martha Virginia McDaniel; two brothers, Vernon and Johnnie McDaniel; niece, Debbie McDaniel Chapman; nephew, John Fox; and a special brother-in-law and friend, Tommy Bowles.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Michael Alan Bowles and wife Liley of Backus Mountain, Robert Steven Bowles and wife Diane of Mumford, Tenn., and Douglas Bowles; brothers, Lee McDaniel and wife Linda of Brookeville, Ind., Charles McDaniel and wife Phyllis of Mabscott, and Paul Joey McDaniel and wife Kim of Piney View; sisters, Glenna Coleman and husband Neil of Norfolk, Va. and Nila Hazelwood and husband Floyd of Stanaford, and Joanna Thomas and husband Wayne of Piney View; special sisters-in-law, Shirley McDaniel, Rose McDaniel, and Loraine Bowles; grandchildren, Bethany, Kayla, Analise, Samantha, Brandon, Riley, and David Bowles; great grandchildren, Amber Smith, Alexis Labour, Farrah Bowles; step-grandchildren, Kelly Pugh, Josh Boston, Kyle Waldon, Brooke Waldon, Ryan Waldon, and Ellianna Waldon; also a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends will mourn her passing.

A celebration life service for Linda Bowles will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jesse Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Her nephews, James, Steven, Brad, Shane, Jonathan, and Jeremy will serve as her pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Prosperity.

Jewell Catherine Boyden

Jewell Catherine Boyden, 88, of Beckley, died Monday, March 3, 2014.

Born October 2, 1925 in Absher, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Financial and Nonie Harman McWhorter.

Mrs. Boyden was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Beckley.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester R.Boyden, sons, Leslie G. Boyden and Glen D. Boyden, brother, Financial McWhorter Jr.

Left to cherish precious memories are her son, Ray E. Boyden of Cedar Grove, N.C.; daughters, Veronica L. Borders- Pettiford of Beckley, Shelia J. Boyden of Missouri City, Texas and Jacqueline E. Boyden of Mebane, N.C.; five grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2014 at New Hope Baptist Church, 304 Worley Road, Beckley, with Rev. Nathaniel Carey and Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

FAIRLEA — Doris Kay Brown, 60, of Fairlea, formerly of Ronceverte, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

STONY BOTTOM — Stanley Ray Carroll Sr., 61, of Stony Bottom, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014.

Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2013 at Lantz Funeral Home in Buckeye with Rev. Julian Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Stony Bottom Cemetery at Stony Bottom.

Glenna Fay Hudson Coleman

MOUNT HOPE — Glenna Fay Hudson Coleman, age 82, formerly of Mount Hope, died at her home in Elkridge, Md., on Thursday, February 26, 2014.

Born January 10, 1932 at Mount Hope, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Ethel Hudson.

Glenna was retired from Mariner Nursing Home in Laurel, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester James “Buster” Coleman Jr. who was a son of the late Chester and Veda Smith Coleman of Dothan. Sons, Kevin Lee Coleman, John Steven Coleman and Ricky Dean Coleman; daughters, Lois Coleman and Susan Elizabeth Coleman Deithorn; a grandson, Brian; brother, Galen and two sisters, Nona Gay and May also preceded her in death.

She is survived by five sons, James M. Coleman Sr. and wife, Peggy, Randall N. Coleman and wife, Kathy, Timothy R. Coleman Sr. and wife, Sue, Charles Bartley Coleman Sr. and wife, Jody A. and Leslie W. Coleman; son-in-law, Shane Deithorn; 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Glenna also leaves behind many family members and friends in Fayette County. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

At her request, Mrs. Coleman was cremated. There will be no service. Her cremains will be interred beside her daughter and grandson at Pine Grove Cemetery, Mt. Airy, Md.

Darrell Dawson

Dennis Darrell Dawson, 81, of Beckley died Sunday, Feb. 23rd, 2014.

Committal services will be Sunday, March 9th at 4 p.m. in the Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Melton Mortuary. Those wishing to attend the committal services are asked to be at the mortuary by 3:30 p.m.

Gracie E. ‘Stover’ Golden

Gracie E. “Stover” Golden, 64, born Aug. 8, 1949, died Feb. 28, 2014.

Gracie was formerly of Packsville on Coal River, and was a 1966 graduate of Marsh Fork High School.

Gracie (Stover) Golden, who went home on Feb. 28, 2014, certainly left her legacy. All the websites and genealogy research, all the people she helped with their own ancestry. That is a great part of what she left behind.

She also left behind family and friends who loved her dearly. She left lots of memories of Packsville and Coal River, W.Va., where she grew up and of Wichita, Kan., where she spent the last period of her life.

This was my little sister. We played. We fought. Most of all, we loved one another and our family. We later loved our children and grandchildren and all the other nuts that fell out of the family tree.

We did our best living our lives. We must say goodbye for now. See you later Gracie. I sure do love you.

Norma Hagamon Green

PINEVILLE — Norma Hagamon Green, 86, of Pineville, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the Wyoming  Nursing and Rehab Center, New Richmond, W.Va.

Born May 30, 1927 at Clearfork, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Thelma Walker Hagamon.

She was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, David Green; a sister, Beatrice Phillips and three brothers, Rex Hagamon, J.E. Hagamon and Donald Hagamon.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse Green of Pineville; son, Ronald Green and his wife, Darlene Foster of Lenoir, N.C.; four brothers, Jimmy Hagamon of Glen Fork, W.Va., Darrell Hagamon of Mercer, Wis., Bob Hagamon of Pineville, W.Va. and Richard Hagamon of Salmon, Idaho; two granddaughters, Carla Dengler and Andrea Sowler and their mother, Connie Galloway; two great-granddaughters, Nichole Quincy, Summer Patterson; a great-great grandson, Thomas Hunter Stone.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 7, 2014 in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Keith Reed of the Cook Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville, officiating.

The family will receive family and friends in the chapel of Calfee Funeral Service one hour prior to the service.

Janice Irene Gunnoe

In the evening hours of Monday  March 3, 2014, our beloved sister and aunt, Janice Irene Gunnoe was delivered into the arms of our Lord.

Born on March 1, 1929 at Bolt, she was the daughter of the late Anthony Acord and Stollie Dickens Acord. Mrs. Gunnoe was a homemaker and had lived her life in Bolt. Until declining health she attended the Shiloh Community Church in Saxon, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Ray Gunnoe in April 2000, by sister Laura Acord, and by two brothers, Dennis "Bill" Acord and Ronald Acord.

She is survived by three sisters, Connie Samples and her husband Kenny of Bolt, Eunice Gunnoe and her husband Kermit of Bolt, and Drema Hurst of Waynesburg, Pa. Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday March 8, 2014 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating, and with Rev. Dean Adams as a soloist. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, from 11 a.m.  until 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

A special thank you to the staff of the ICU and 1st floor of the Plateau Medical Center.  You treated not only her but the family with such respect and kindness. May God bless you.

Eli K. Hatfield

COAL MOUNTAIN — Eli K. Hatfield, 79, passed away Monday, March 3rd, 2014.

Born January 25th 1935 in Guyan, W.Va., he was the son of late Kelly and Lessie Hatfield of Coal Mountain.

In addition to parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Hatfield.

Those left to mourn his passing are his sons, Tony and wife Terena Hatfield and their daughter Madison of Coal Mountain, Bradley Hatfield of Brenton; grandchildren Lyndsie Suttle, Haleigh Banther, and Gregory Meadows; brothers and sisters, Hubert Hatfield of Coal Mountain, Grethel Dixon of Virginia, Travis and wife Bonnie Hatfield of New York,  Opal Bailey of Rockhouse, Donna Lavender of New York, and Lizzie and husband Gerald Lester of Coal Mountain.

William Joseph Kesner

HINTON — William Joseph Kesner, 67, of 213 12th Ave., Hinton, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at his home following a long illness.

Born December 30, 1946 in Hinton, he was the son of the late William and Nina Parker Kesner.

Mr. Kesner was a former employee of the trailer manufacturing industry. He retired to Hinton and was a loving father, grandfather and brother.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elwood and Brother Kesner, two sisters, Tina Gill and Mary Raia, five half-brothers, Lacy, Tommy, James, Jim and Ernie Simmons and a half-sister, Lena House.

Survivors include two sons, David Kesner of Hinton and Gary Kesner of Harrisonburg, Pa.; one daughter, Paula Kesner of Harrisonburg, Pa.; two sisters, Betty Adkins and Dorothy Adkins, both of Hinton; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Kesner Cemetery at Upland near Hinton.

Harold Albert ‘John’ Massie

ALDERSON — Harold Albert "John" Massie, age 63, of Alderson, formerly of Ronceverte, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at his home in Alderson, following a long illness.

Born February 23, 1951, in Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Susie O. Massie.  

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Rosa Mae Holt; brother-in-law, Floyd Allen "Frog" Carter; and a nephew, Gregory Scott Carter.

Mr. Massie was the retired owner and operator of Massie’s T’s of Fairlea and Alderson, and the former Massie’s Wholesale of Alderson. Prior to his self-employment, he was a heavy equipment operator for several years with W & H Construction Company, Bluefield, W.Va. He loved to play music and played the flat top rhythm guitar and enjoyed showing muscle cars. Mr. Massie loved to spend time with his family and close friends, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Phyllis C. Massie of Alderson; two daughters, Stephanie C. Massie and her companion, Robert Keith Heaton, of Alderson, and Darla Massie Reed and her husband, Jerry Reed, of Alderson; two brothers, Harry L. Massie and his wife, Brenda, of Ronceverte, and Danny S. Massie and his wife, Alicia, of Alderson; two sisters, Henrietta S. Carter of Ronceverte, and Mary Massie Terry of Vinton, Va.; four grandchildren, Taryn D. Zimmerman, Skyler J. Giese, Kirsten C. Heaton, and Jerry R. Reed Jr.; very special friends, Bobby and Robin Wilson of Alderson; and numerous aunts, uncles, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

Funeral services will be Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with Pastor James L. Combs officiating. Burial will follow at the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson. Friends may call Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.

James Grant Richmond

James Grant Richmond, age 84 of Beckley, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Born on August 27, 1929 in Blue Jay, he was the son of the late Gilbert F. Richmond and Cora Pack Richmond.

Mr. Richmond was a retired truck driver for National Mine Service. He was a member of the Calloway Heights Baptist Church, and had attended the Bethel Baptist Church in Florida. He was a former deacon and member of the Skelton Freewill Baptist Church.

Mr. Richmond was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer sports fan.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Irene Smith, Elsie Richmond, Wilma Elliott, Fawn Kincaid, Florence Copley and Eva Lykins.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years,  Irene Ballengee Dunn Richmond; his sister Grethel Copley of Daniels, W.Va. His children: Bonnie Scott and her husband Martin of Ontario, N.Y., Doug Richmond and his wife Linda of Fort Mill, S.C., Martha Lynn Bosley of Webster, N.Y., Robert Ballengee and his wife Ethel of Shady Spring, and Tommy Dunn and his wife Juanita of Flat Top; 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday March 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Luther Richmond officiating, with Rev. Jeff Canterbury and Bill Campbell singing.  Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David Craddock, Ron Lombardo, Ira Lee, Charles Goins, Don Wood, and Wesley Bosley.   Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Wood, Mason Smith, and Bradley Bosley.
