Janice Curtis Walker

In the early morning hours of Thursday, January 2nd, 2014, that calm and sweet spirit of Janice Walker took flight to see her Savior “Face to Face.” Janice had been in declining health since September.

The first of two children, Janice Gayle Curtis was born in Beckley. Her parents were the late Ewell and Mary Fernandez Curtis. Born on April 3rd, 1940, she was 73 years of age. Janice was the dear sister of Gene Curtis and his wife, Linda Mahaffey Curtis, of Emerald Isle, NC.

Janice spent her childhood at Oak Grove. She was a 1958 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Janice furthered her studies at Concord College where she received a degree in elementary education. A dedicated school teacher in the Raleigh County School system, she retired in 1999, with 37 years of service, last teaching at Stanaford Elementary. Janice was a faithful member of the Carriage Drive Church of Christ. Family was everything to Janice. She tenderly looked after her parents in their declining years. Married to Wesley Walker for many years, they made their home at Stanaford. Wes preceded her in death in 2006.

The light of her life was her two daughters, Tina and Rebekah. As the girls recall their mother, it was these words, “Loving and Calm,” that always came to mind. “Everything is going to be alright.”

Tina is married to Joe Lowery, they reside in Oak Hill, and Rebekah Walker lives in the Curtis home place at Oak Grove. The great blessing of being a grandmother has been the birth of her grandsons, Will age 14 and Logan age eight. According to Ma Maw, “They could do no wrong.” Her extended family includes her brother, Gene’s daughter, Tara Hopkins, and her family; several cousins, among them, Randy Fernandez who has gone out of his way to check on Janice. As her health began to fail, caregiver and companion Patricia Hairston and “adopted daughter” her summertime caregiver Julie Firebaugh entered her life. They were so kind to Janice. The family wants to publicly acknowledge the Hidden Valley Center for their exceptional care.

Janice was a great lover of animals. The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Humane Society of Raleigh County Inc., 325 Gray Flats Road, PO Box 115, Beckley, WV 25802.

On Sunday, January 5th, at 2 p.m. we will honor the life Janice Curtis Walker. “The Service of Remembrance” will be held at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Scott Hamilton will be officiating. Janice will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.

And so now, we give Janice back to God. “She will be the swift uplifting rush, when we awake in the morning’s hush. She will be one of those quiet birds in circle flight…. one of those soft stars that shine at night…” May she forever rest in peace.

Condolences may be sent to the family’s guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary and Cremation Center, Beckley.
