Helen Keith Lowe Killman
Jan. 18, 1939 – Dec. 10, 2013
Helen Keith Lowe Killman, the blond-haired blue-eyed beauty who turned heads wherever she went, departed this temporal earthly realm for everlasting life and peace on December 10, 2013.
Helen was born to William and Thelma Lowe on January 18, 1939, in Beckley. She was predeceased by her parents, her only sibling, Donald Earl Lowe, and by her dear husband, Samuel Henry Killman III. Those left to cherish her include three children, Sam Killman IV of Wilmington, N.C.; Sharon Drennan (Rob) of Charlotte, N.C.; Jack Killman (Rachelle) of Matthews, N.C.; four grandchildren, Sam Killman V and Jesse Killman of Wilmington, N.C., Aaron Killman, USMC, and Avery Killman of Wilmington, N.C.; many beloved cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Helen never met a stranger; she made friends easily and maintained lifelong relationships over time and distance. She created a swathe of joyful fun from her childhood in Beckley, to her life in Charlotte where she married Sam in 1957, put herself through college and practiced nursing at what was then Charlotte Memorial Hospital. At CMH, she cared for newborn babies and then served as Head Nurse of the Psychiatric Unit. From there, Helen and Sam moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where she continued her education, this time in Fine Arts. She was a multimedia artist, painter and accomplished photographer. Finally, Helen and Sam settled in Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington where she enjoyed a life of retirement enriched by her family, friends, neighbors and involvement in community arts and activities.
Through it all, Helen put her family and others first, being Sam’s biggest fan and supporter of his policing career, concerned for the happiness of her children and grandchildren and committed to fair treatment of all people.
For a while, there were many perfect days filled with sunshine, sea breeze and music. But after cancer took Sam away, this earthly life became ever more difficult until it became impossible. Helen died peacefully at home as her elder son sat vigil.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 College Road, Wilmington, N.C. Family will receive visitors one hour prior. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive.
Her children would like to thank our mother’s doctors, neighbors and extended family for their care, love and prayers. If anyone is moved to remember Helen with a gift, please contribute to your local Humane Society for animals.
