Janice Ayers, 64, of Princewick, passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at home following a short illness.

Cleadith Darrell ‘Rusty’ Condie

Cleadith Darrell “Rusty” Condie, 54, passed away Nov. 17, 2008 in Maiden, N.C. following a sudden illness.

Born on February 27, 1954 in Beckley, he was the son of Bessie Martin of Fairdale.

Rusty served our country faithfully in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the trucking business as an owner and operator.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lodema Fix Martin and Cleadith Martin.

Those left behind to cherish his memory include his mother, Bessie; two sons, Cleadith Darrell Condie Jr. of Terrell, Texas and Jason Howard Condie of Tyler, Texas; a daughter, Angie Clifton Mancari and son-in-law, Frank Mancari of Beckley; grandchildren, Brandon Condie of Terrell, Texas, Abigail Mancari, Amanda Mancari and Jordan Mancari, all of Beckley. He is also survived by his companion and best friend, Mary Koliha of Maiden, N.C. Rusty also leaves behind a host of family including a sister, brothers, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by both family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Calvary Assembly of God.

Roberta Jean Hill





Roberta Jean Hill, 67, of Dorothy, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008.

She was born Dec. 13, 1940, at Sandusky, Ohio, a daughter of the late Robert W. and Mary Agnes Scheid Starr.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Charles Hill and a sister, Nancy Mae Starr.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Carl Robert and Margaret Hill of Dorothy; five daughters and their husbands: Beverly Jean and Doug Jaqua and Pamela Ann and Ronald Day, all of Collins, Ohio, Tina Marie and David Willman and Shelly Lynn and Dana Willman, all of Dorothy, Ranee Ann and Steve Walker of Prince; two sisters, Janet Marie Hilt of Toledo, Ohio and Karen Lee Hartman of Norwalk, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, Heather Day, Jamie Day, Sarah Willman, Sonie Hill, Shela Willman, Tamra Walker, Troy Jaqua, Charles Willman, Robert Willman, Mark Hill, Carl Hill, Travis Willman, Steven Walker and Coy Walker.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Dorothy Assembly of God Church, Dorothy, with the Rev. Jerry Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in the Henry Hill Cemetery, Dorothy.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at the Armstrong Funeral Home.

Patty Lou Smith Mitchem





ALDERSON — Patty Lou Smith Mitchem, age 55, of Creamery Road, Alderson, formerly of Hinton, died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at her home in Alderson, following a long illness.

Born July 11, 1953 at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Smith and the late Gladys Smith Papadotos. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee Mitchem Jr.; her grandmother that raised her, Eva Crawford Smith; and three brothers, James Smith, Mike Smith, and Billy Lynn Smith.

Mrs. Mitchem was a homemaker. She was a 1972 graduate of Hinton High School and was of the Church of God faith. She was a member of the Rainelle Chapter of the Women of the Moose and was a former volunteer at the Alderson Pre-Kindergarten. Mrs. Mitchem was an advocate for West Virginia Disabled Children for many years and collected toys for children that were in need at Christmas and throughout the year.

Survivors include her beloved husband, best friend, and companion, Michael Lee Mitchem of Creamery Road, Alderson; two sons, Michael Shawn Mitchem of Creamery Road, Alderson, and Michael Angelo Mitchem of Orient Hill; a daughter, Reginia Ann Mitchem of Caldwell; a beloved sister, Edith Smith Coffman and her husband, Steve, of Jumping Branch; two brothers, Johnnie Carlos Smith and his wife, Brenda, of Blue Sulphur Springs, and Steve Allen Smith and his wife, Dreama, of Hinton; nine grandchildren, granddaughter, Izreal “Izzie” Mitchem, that she was raising, Jalen Mitchem, Ariana Mitchem, Montana Hoke, Mackenzi Mitchem, Brittney Crookshanks, Jeremy Crookshanks, Timmy Todd, and Adrian Anna; a goddaughter, Ka-Ka; special friends, Tommy and Sue Novack/Harris of Rainelle, Ronnie and Janice Burgess of Meadow Bridge, Larry Bennett of Alderson and Phyllis Coleman of Rainelle; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Hinton, with Pastor Dale Preast and the Rev. Sam Groves officiating.

Friends may call 12 noon until 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.

Serving as pallbearers will be Teddy Bennett Jr., Junior McMillion, Larry Bennett, Michael Angelo Mitchem, Bo Baker, and Michael Kelley.

Christine Coffman Scott





SINKS GROVE — Christine Coffman Scott, 83, passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at the Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home, Fairlea, after a short illness.

Born Dec. 12, 1924, at Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Mildred Johnson Coffman.

Mrs. Scott was a lifelong resident of Sinks Grove, member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Sinks Grove, a faithful member of the CEOS (formerly Homemakers) of Ft. Spring and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert L. Scott and a sister, Emma Virginia Coffman.

Survivors include her son, Herbert E. Scott of Sinks Grove.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patrick Ferrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Coffman Cemetery, Coffman Cemetery Road, Lewisburg.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Ft. Spring, and at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be David Miller, Jim King, Willard Humphreys, Willis Humphreys, Rusty Hedrick, Mike McCarty and honorary pallbearer, Freddy Longanacre.

Sallie Garrison Shrewsbury





Sallie Garrison Shrewsbury, of 1518 Harper Rd., Beckley, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at the Lucy Bowers Hospice House.

The daughter of Arthur Clarence Garrison and Velma Holland Garrison, she was born Oct. 14, 1940, in Giles County, Tenn. She attended Middle Tennessee State University and earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Western Kentucky State University in Bowling Green. She taught business courses in the Kentucky school system for 17 years.

Sallie and her husband retired to Raleigh County in 2000. Her gracious hospitality was showcased for several years as they owned and operated the popular Merritt House Bed and Breakfast in Beckley.

An active member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, Sallie’s outstanding service as a kitchen hostess, planning and preparing meals, was a special gift to the congregation and guests alike.

She is survived by her husband Rondal B. Shrewsbury of Beckley; her brother Arthur Clarence Garrison Jr. (Buster) of Elkton, Tenn.; a daughter Cynthia Rae Hammers Prigge and her husband Thomas of Cologne, Germany; a daughter Stephanie Kaye Hammers Vandeveer of Louisville, Ky.; and two young granddaughters, Rebecca Prigge and Sydney Vandeveer. She is also survived by a cherished golden retriever “Sam Boy.”

Visitation was held 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, at Melton Mortuary and may call one hour before the service today at Melton Mortuary.

Services will be 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, December 3 in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Rd., Beckley, with Rev. Adrian Pratt and Rev. Robert Debnam officiating.

Pallbearers will be nephews Keith Garrison and Kevin Garrison, Bill Riffe, Butch Riffe, Joseph McGhee, and Anthony Mazelon. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Lewis Fox, Mr. Thomas Keyser, Mr. Robert Sayre, Mr. Charles Hardcastle, and Mr. Warren Thornhill.

OAK HILL — Judy Trickle, age 61, of Oak Hill died on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 in Fayette Nursing and Rehab Center at Fayetteville.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. William Skeldon officiating. Burial with follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Oak Hill.

R. Keith Walters





R. Keith Walters, 67, of Palm Harbor, Fla., passed Saturday, Nov. 29th, 2008, in New Port Richey, Fla.

Born April 3rd, 1941, in Gay, W.Va., he was the son of the late Cecil C. and Reva Walters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Fred C. Walters.

He was a 1959 graduate of Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg, W.Va. and a journalism graduate of Marshall University.

Keith was a sports writer for the Charleston Daily Mail in his early years and the Executive Editor of Beckley Newspapers from 1976-1987. From 1987-1995 he served as Editorial Consultant for the southeastern region of Thomson Newspapers. He was later Publisher of both the Shelby Star in Shelby, N.C. and The Journal-Tribune & Messenger in Seneca/Clemson, S.C. He returned to Florida in his retirement where he worked part-time with several marketing publications. He was a long-time Chairman of Mac’s Toy Fund, a founding director of US Coal Festivals, Inc., was instrumental in the development of Beckley Newspapers in Education program, and served on several city’s Rotary and Chambers of Commerce, along with many other varied civic organizations. He was a collector of art and photography, a beloved Brother, Uncle, Father and Grand Dad.

He leaves behind five grandchildren, Gregory Coiner of Tennessee, Celia and Celena Morales of Bourbsville, W.Va., Ely Walters of Portland, Oreg. and Sabine McMillion of Beckley; four children, Tracy Morales of Barboursville, W.Va., Christi Coiner of Centerville, Tenn., Keith Walters Jr. of Portland, Oreg. and Jennifer McMillion of Beckley; a brother and sister, Frank Walters of Clearwater, Fla. and Judy Cooper of Orlando, Fla.; many nieces and nephews, and life partner Barbara Stafford, with whom he made his home in Palm Harbor, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memorial donation be made to either: Moffitt Cancer Center, 1-800-456-3434 or Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 727-845-4004.
