Edith Allen, 56, of Raleigh, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Elizabeth Josephine Baker
HARLEM HEIGHTS — Elizabeth Josephine Baker of Harlem Heights, 80, crossed over after a long illness on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.
Mrs. Baker was born on Aug. 9, 1928, at Kaymoor, W.Va., the daughter of the late Waverly and Sally Matthews.
She accepted Christ at an early age at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Garten, W.Va., under the leadership of the Rev. A.W. Woods.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Harlem Heights, serving as director of the choirs, past superintendent of the Sunday School, past teacher of the Sunday School and always studying the Bible. She was a member and past president of the New River Associate Deacons’ Wives, board member of the Women’s Convention of New River, member of The Community Choir, West Virginia Baptist State Chorus, The New River (District) Music Convention and past director of the New River Youth.
She worked outside her home as a nanny and also a nurse’s aide at a nursing home in Fayetteville and was active in her church and community.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Lewis Baker; a daughter, Rosalyn Baker; two brothers, two sisters and a daughter-in-law.
Those left to cherish her memories are two sons, Gerald Baker of Toledo, Ohio and Paul Baker (Jada) of Oak Hill; four daughters, Vera Jones (Homer) of Adelphi, Md., Rita Scott (Quinton) of Dallas, Texas, Carla Stephens (Walter) of Dallas, Texas, and Paula Jackson (Calvin) of Snellville, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, Tamara Baker, Christopher Jones (Toni), Carmen Baker, Amber Baker, Tramaine Scott, Quinton Scott II, Charita Scott, Leslie Reddish, Kimberly Baker, Regina Baker, Brianna Baker, Josiah Baker and Kaitlyn Baker; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Baker, Tyler Baker and R’son Baker; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Robert Matthews (Pat) of Delaware, Ohio; six sisters, Christine Ramey of San Antonio, Texas, Clarice English of Cleveland, Ohio, Eva Weaver of Newark, Ohio, Flora Redd (John) of Beckley, Ruby Davis of Cleveland, Ohio, and Geraldine Griffin (Charles) of Takoma, Wash.; one aunt, Margaret Matthew of Oak Hill. Also left to cherish her memories are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Harlem Heights, with the Rev. Paul Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church.

Othella Meeks Belcher
Othella Meeks Belcher, 90, of Beaver, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008.
Born Feb. 6, 1918, she was the daughter of the late James and Pearl Meeks.
Othella was a school teacher for the Fayette and Raleigh County Board of Education. She started teaching at Pax and then at Clear Fork. Othella retired from Sophia Jr. High School. She enjoyed reading about local history and church history. She attended WV Tech for four years and received a Master’s degree from West Virginia University.
She was of the Presbyterian faith and attended the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shady Spring.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Everett “Boots” Belcher.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Rebecca Belcher of Beaver; son, James Belcher and wife, Willa, of Ghent; grandchildren, James Belcher II of Ghent, and William Belcher of Charlotte, N.C.; stepgranddaughters, Melissa Petrey of Odd, and Denise Wood of Oak Hill.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

JUDSON — Leona Nora Richmond Boone, 90, of Judson died 11:44 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, following a long illness.
Born Sept. 3, 1918, at Ramp, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Leona Nora Ward Richmond.
Mrs. Boone was a homemaker and a charter member of the Tempa Baptist Church. She recently became a member of the Hinton Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, W.R. “Buster” Boone; and nine brothers and sisters.
She is survived by four daughters, Kitty Vandall of Hinton, Mary Jones and husband, Frank, of Willis, Va., Elsie Williams and husband, Alonzo, of Judson and Goldie Folds of Hinton; two sons, Willard K. Boone and wife, Vivian, of Forest Hill and Perry Boone and wife, Linda, of Judson; one brother, Hobert Richmond and wife, Bernice, of Stokesdale, N.C.; two sisters, Gloria Kelly of Sparta, N.C., and Lucy Thomas of Judson; 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton with John McCain, minister. Burial will follow in the Tempa Baptist Church Cemetery.

PINEVILLE — Sherry Cline, 45, of Pineville, passed away Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Ohio.
Sherry was born Oct. 27, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Roy Cline of Indian Creek, W.Va., and Charla Cline of Beaver, W.Va.
She was a loving mother and a graduate of Pineville High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Keith Graybeal; stepfather, Jackie Ray Tilley; and brother-in-law, Barry Graybeal.
Survivors include a daughter, Candice Cline of High Point, N.C.; three sons, Brad Graybeal, Jesse Graybeal and Ernest Cline, all of Pineville; a sister, Bianca Cline of Charleston, W.Va.; two brothers, Jeffery Cline of Morgantown and Charles Cline of Arkansas; five grandchildren, Issiah Graybeal, Kaidance Nashae Cline, Trey Monroe, Christopher McLendon and Tori Allen; dear friend, Robert Hatfield; and a host of other loving family and friends.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Erma Lee Zickafoose Felts, 79, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.
Born on May 24, 1929, at Lawn, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Stella Duncan Zickafoose.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Arzy Goddard and Jim Felts; a sister, Aretta Jane Delmas; a brother, Azel Ford Zickafoose; five half brothers and four half sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Vandall and wife, Jean, of Meadow Bridge and Hobert Goddard and wife, Carole, of Medina, Ohio; three daughters, Oleta Perpar and husband, Joel, of Medina, Ohio, Opal Wiester and husband, Gary, of LaGrange Township, Ohio, and Linda Frueh and husband, David, of Columbia Station, Ohio; three sisters, Ethel Zickafoose of Lawn, Ruby Holliday of Crawley and Nina Emmerling and husband, Kurt, of Clintonville; three brothers, Shadrach Zickafoose and wife, Frances, of Indianapolis, Ind., Morgan Zickafoose and wife, Ellen, of Springdale and Elbert Zickafoose and wife, Jo Ellen, of Lincoln Park, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

CYCLONE — Patricia Louise Yates Gibson, 69, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family following a long illness.
Born April 6, 1939, in Cabin Creek, she was the daughter of the late James Robert Yates and Virginia Katherine Holbrook Yates.
Patricia was a homemaker and a member of Cooper Memorial Baptist Church, where her husband has pastored for the past 28 years.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 53 years, the Rev. Seldon Gibson of Cyclone; her mother, Virginia Katherine Yates of Carlsbad, N.M.; two sons, Stevie Gibson and his wife, Sylvia, of Statesville, N.C., and James Gibson and his wife, Janet, of Elberton, Ga.; two daughters, Vicky Lawson and her husband, Nick, of Cyclone and Deanza Phillips and her husband, Paul, of Kings, N.C.; four brothers, Larry Yates and his wife, Kay, of Pawnee, Okla., Archie Yates and his wife, Pam, of San Diego, Calif., Bruce Yates of Carlsbad, N.M., and Russell Yates and his wife, Kathy, of Carlsbad, N.M.; five sisters, Lavera Gibson of Elberton, Ga., Carol Boyd of Carlsbad, N.M., Marsha Dudley and her husband, Les, of Carlsbad, N.M., Aloha Colt and her husband, John, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Barbara Boatwright and her husband, Steve, of Carlsbad, N.M.; eight grandchildren, John Carl Calvert, Jason Gibson, Joshua Gibson, Kelli Echegaray, MaryAnn Clements, Victoria Lawson, Wiley Phillips and Morgan Lawson; five great-grandchildren, Colby Vargas, Abigail Clements, Jacob Clements, Jaret Echegaray and Kaitlyn Echegaray; several nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.
A celebration of Patricia’s life will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bright Prospect Missionary Baptist Church at Cyclone, with the Rev. Jackie Lusk, the Rev. Lucian Brown and Billie Joe Cooper officiating. Patricia will be laid to rest in Brown Cemetery, Cyclone.
Casketbearers will be Joshua Gibson, Jason Gibson, Juan Echegaray, Earnel Lusk, Alan Clements, Rex Osborne and Dean Osborne.

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. — Mabel Ruth Graham, 79, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008.

William Ryan ‘Billy’ Hopkins
William Ryan “Billy” Hopkins, 29, of Beckley, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 11, 2008, in an automobile accident at 9:14 p.m.
Born May 31, 1979, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, he was the son of William D. and Beverly Sharon Ford Hopkins.
Billy grew up with his family at 1612 Maxwell Hill Road, Beckley. He married Jennifer Michelle Lively on Sept. 15, 2007. They resided in Lewisburg and then recently moved to 120 Bava Drive, Beckley. He attended Maxwell Hill Elementary School and later went to Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated in 1997. He attended Beckley College for a while. During high school, he was active in drama and played a lead character in the play Juvie. He also played the role of Dracula in Mount Hope with the Princess Play House. He loved music. During high school, he played with the band Warfair. They did several shows around the county. He wrote a short story in the 6th grade that was published in a National Publication, Highlights Magazine. While at Woodrow, he painted the character Spawn. While he enjoyed writing stories and poems, his first love was music and performing on stage.
He spent time after high school at Subway, then Kroger’s; a couple of years at Lowe’s, and then at ResCare. He enjoyed sports, but he was too kindhearted to hunt and shoot game.
He leaves behind his kind and loving wife, Jennifer Michelle Lively Hopkins; his mother, Beverly Ford Hopkins; his father, William D. Hopkins; brother, Shaun D. Hopkins and wife, Brandy Lee Hopkins; his niece, Ellie D. Hopkins; grandmothers, Marian Hopkins and Myrtle C. Ford; aunt and uncle, John and Barbara Yurick of Beckley; and cousins, Alice, Nick and Sam Yurick; Phil Ramsey and wife, Tammy, of Peterstown, P.D. Ramsey and wife, Kelly, of Roanoke, Va.; and numerous other relatives.
Friends may gather with the family 5 p.m. until the time of the memorial service Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. A memorial service will be 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Maurice L. Howells
MCLEAN, Va. — Maurice L. Howells departed this life after a short illness on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2008, two days after his 88th birthday.
Born in Pennsylvania, Maurice was the last survivor of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gwen and David Howells; his sister, Rachel; brother, Melvin; and his devoted wife of 55 years, Lillian Reed Howells, passed away nearly two years ago.
Maurice was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country during World War II. His respect for veterans and their families led him to a distinguished career with the Veterans Administration. He was honored for his exceptional service, and became field director for the East Coast. Maurice worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for service men and women. Maurice had a quick wit and keen sense of humor which he used making speeches to veterans organizations. Education was a top priority. He was one of the first in his immediate family to attend college. His strong work ethic had him working for the VA so he could attend night school. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Wilkes College now University with high honors. He completed graduate classes from Wharton’s School of business, where he was class president.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son, David Howells of McLean, Va., with whom he resided; and his daughter, Deborah Lee Bush of Oak Hill his son-in-law, Steve Bush, whom he considered a son; and his beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Lee Bush and David Michael Bush of Oak Hill. His grandchildren gave him an endless amount of joy and he was extremely proud of their accomplishments.
Family left to cherish his memory in Pennsylvania includes cousins, nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much. Throughout his career, Maurice made lifelong friends with whom he shared a special bond. Dearest friends include Chuck Lucas and Betty Nahadill.
Maurice was many things to many people: devoted husband, mentor, loving grandfather, trusted friend. He was a man of integrity who could be depended on to do his best whatever the task. In a world that is confusing, Maurice represented stability. The lives that Maurice touched can gain strength from his example and will one day hear, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”
His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with funeral service at 7 p.m., with the Rev. David Snead officiating. Military grave rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 3110.

Karl Krumholz
Karl Krumholz, 74, of Daniels, went to be with his Creator on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at the Cabell Huntington Hospital following surgery.
Karl was born on Dec. 12, 1933, in Detroit, Mich., and was the son of the late Agnes Case Krumholz and Louis Krumholz.
He is survived by his wife, Jessie Cox Krumholz of Daniels; three daughters, Julie Milam and husband, Eugene, of Alderson, Cindy Sperling and husband, Alan, of Boca Raton, Fla., Clarissa Binkley and husband, John, of Vero Beach, Fla., and the treasures of his life, his five grandchildren, Sarah, Abby, Alexandra, Jordan and Andrew; two stepsons, Mel Cooper and wife, Jeana, and their daughter, Tiffany, of Daniels, Randy Mullins and Shelli of Cool Ridge; his mother-in-law, Sylvia Cox of Pine Lodge Nursing Home; brothers-in-law, Joe Cox and wife, Katie, Russell Cox and John Lowe; sisters-in-law, Betty Scarbrough, Mary Ann Milam and husband, Donald; and a very special niece, Shelly Brewer and husband, Gab, of Morehead, Ky.
Karl retired in 1995 from General Motors in Pontiac, Mich., and then moved to West Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shady Spring.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, with Pastor Delvin D. Elwell Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Clayton Baptist Church Cemetery, Clayton.
Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Alan Sperling, John Binkley, Eugene Milam, Randy Mullins, Mel Cooper and Gab Brewer.

Lois Marian Clements McLean
Lois Marian Clements McLean, 83, of Beckley, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, in a local hospital following a long illness.
Born July 6, 1925, in Indianapolis, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Phil and Margaret Clements.
Lois graduated from Purdue University and wrote about Mother Jones’ association with the United Coal Miners. She met and married William D. McLean while working as an entertainer of Armed Forces personnel stationed in Germany.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. William D. McLean; sons, John David McLean and his wife, Marianne, of Providence, R.I., Paul Joseph McLean of San Francisco, Calif., and Marc Andrew McLean and his wife, Danielle, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; grandchildren: Madeline, James and William (Will) McLean; sister, Phyllis Barrett and her husband, Bill, of Indianapolis, Ind.; brothers, Marc Clements and his wife, Evelyn, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Ted Clements and his wife, Barbara, of Indianapolis, Ind.; favorite brother-in-law, Robert McLean of Beckley.
A funeral liturgy will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel S. Sacus the celebrant. A rite of committal will follow in St. Sebastian Cemetery.
Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Calfee Funeral Home, where a rosary led by the Rev. Mr. Don Wise will be 7 p.m.

Robert Lee Persinger
ALDERSON — Robert Lee Persinger, 78, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at his home after a long illness.
Born Dec. 10, 1929, in Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Opie and Blanche Persinger. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Persinger was a resident of Alderson and was formerly of Ronceverte, member of Baptist Church and was retired from Mulligan Lumber in Ronceverte.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sarah Persinger; and one son, Buddy Wayne Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Crystal M. Persinger of Alderson; seven daughters, Tabatha Moore and husband, Keith, of Columbus, Ohio, Dianna Craft and husband, Danny, of Alderson, Phyllis Richmond and husband, Noah, of Jumping Branch, Vickie Price and husband, Bill, of Asbury, Sandra Wurm and husband, Jim, of Pence Springs, Edwina Mullins of Daniels and Diane Price of Ronceverte; a son, Joseph M. Persigner of Alderson; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Ft. Spring, with Pastor Stewart Farley officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church Cemetery, Alderson.

HOLDEN — Jack L. Porter, 74, of Holden passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008.

Donnell Byerly Portzline
FAYETTEVILLE — Donnell Byerly Portzline, 71, of Fayetteville, entered into Life Eternal Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
Born on Nov. 23, 1936, at Sunbury, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter F. Portzline Sr. and Minnie K. Coryell Portzline.
Mr. Portzline was a professor emeritus at West Virginia Institute of Technology, Montgomery, with 34 years of service. He directed the Upward Bound Program and he was the former director of Teacher Education. He attended the Fayetteville United Methodist Church and he did volunteer work for the American Red Cross.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Skinner; and one brother, Walter F. Portzline Jr.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ruth Ann Ratcliff Portzline of Fayetteville; two daughters, Peggy Lynn Ayers and husband, Jeff, of Roanoke, Va., and Patricia Ruth Conover and husband, Dave, of Holland, Pa.; three granddaughters, Bethany Conover, Sophia Conover and Greta Conover; one niece, Kathryn Barker of Piney View; great-niece, Hannah Barker of Piney View; two brothers, Ralph Portzline of Columbus, Ohio, and Jack Portzline of Richmond, Ind.; and several other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fayetteville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating.
The family will receive friends in the Friendship Hall of the church 12:30 p.m. until time of the memorial service Saturday.

Ricky Allen Shrewsbury
Ricky Allen Shrewsbury, 52, of C&O Shop Road, Glen Morgan, died peacefully at home Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008.
Born on Nov. 8, 1956, in Mabscott, he was the son of Vivian Farris Shrewsbury of Iron Station, N.C., and the late Willard Shrewsbury. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Anne Brubaker.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Brooks Shrewsbury of Beckley; a daughter, Nicole Richmond and spouse of Shady Spring; a son, Anthony Cantley, his wife and new daughter of North Carolina; four sisters, Eliza Reynolds and husband, Wheeler, of South Daytona Beach, Fla., Melissa Young and husband, John, of Iron Station, N.C., Brenda Allen and husband, Clyde, of Raleigh, N.C., and Jennie Bennett and husband, Dale, of King, N.C.; and four brothers, Jesse Shrewsbury and wife, Betty, of Vale, N.C., Ray Shrewsbury and wife, Sue, of Scarbro, Dale Shrewsbury and wife, Goldie, of Raleigh and Darrell Shrewsbury and wife, Lisa, of Raleigh. He is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be noon until 4 p.m. Friday at his home on 257 of C&O Shop Road, Glen Morgan.

MEADOWS PLACE, Texas — Richard Earl Spade, 64, of Meadows Place, Texas, passed away Nov. 10, 2008, with his family by his side.
He was born Dec. 26, 1943, in Kilsyth, West Virginia, to John and Mae Lewis Spade.
Richard will be sadly missed by his wife of 45 years, Patty; daughter, Susan Rogers and husband, Kevin; son, David and wife, Jennifer; five grandchildren, Justin, Meagan, John, Emily and Sarah; brothers, George and wife, Joyce, Bill and wife, Barbara, and Howard; sister, Helen Suttle; and numerous nephews, nieces and dear friends.
A visitation with the family will 5 to 7 p.m. today at the chapel of Earthman Funeral Directors Southwest, with the funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. Interment will be private.

PINEVILLE — Sherry Cline, 45, of Pineville, passed away Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Ohio.
Sherry was born Oct. 27, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of Roy Cline of Indian Creek, W.Va., and Charla Cline of Beaver, W.Va.
She was a loving mother and a graduate of Pineville High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Keith Graybeal; stepfather, Jackie Ray Tilley; and brother-in-law, Barry Graybeal.
Survivors include a daughter, Candice Cline of High Point, N.C.; three sons, Brad Graybeal, Jesse Graybeal and Ernest Cline, all of Pineville; a sister, Bianca Cline of Charleston, W.Va.; two brothers, Jeffery Cline of Morgantown and Charles Cline of Arkansas; five grandchildren, Issiah Graybeal, Kaidance Nashae Cline, Trey Monroe, Christopher McLendon and Tori Allen; dear friend, Robert Hatfield; and a host of other loving family and friends.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco. Sherry will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
