SUMMERS COUNTY — Erma Lee Brogan, 69, of Summers County, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at the Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley, following a long illness.

At her request, her body has been cremated. Memorial service will 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church at Hilldale with Pastor Lance Yost officiating. The family will receive friends after 1 p.m.

Patricia Carol Burnside, 75, of Dorothy, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, after a long illness.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1933, at Belle, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clyde E. and Ruby Mae Jarrell Smith.

She attended the Sycamore Free Pentecostal Church of God at Colcord and was a dedicated worker for the Raleigh County Democratic Party.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carmel C. Burnside; a sister, Peggy Ann Smith; a brother, Clyde Smith Jr.; two stepdaughters, Roberta Browning and Judy Kouns; and two stepsons, Norman and Arthur Burnside.

She is survived by her son, William Humphrey and wife, Veronica, of Dorothy, who were her caregivers; her daughter, Sandra Armstrong and husband, Jim, of Whitesville; two sisters, Beulah Hamm of Defianc of Ohio and Barbara Jane Smith of Harrisburg, Pa.; three brothers, Charles Edgle Smith of Anitoch, Calif., Walter Smith of Portland, Ore., and Larry Smith of Hillsboro, W.Va.; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Clay of Granite Fall, N.C.; three stepsons, Carmel C. Burnside Jr. of Hickory, N.C., Joe Burnside and Carlos Burnside, both of Dry Creek, W.Va.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Service will be noon Friday at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree and the Rev. Cecil McClellan officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Elder James Arthur Claytor





INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — Elder James Arthur Claytor, 61, formerly of Fayetteville and Beckley, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 2, 2008, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews, N.C., after a long illness.

Born on Sept. 24, 1947, he was the son of the late Richard Giles Claytor and Willie Mae Claytor.

He was a graduate of Bluefield State College in Bluefield, W.Va., and was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps who defended his nation with honor during the Vietnam War. He was the former pastor of Gospel Lighthouse Church of Fayetteville, and a member of the Blessed Assurance Church of Monroe, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his aforementioned father, mother and brother, Ricky Lee Claytor.

He leaves the following to cherish his memory, wife, Estella Claytor; sons, Terry Manns (Helen) of Hampton, Va., and Terrence Manns (Mia) of Phenix, City, Ala.; daughters, Sondra Williams-Brooker, Latonja Williams and Ursurla Claytor, all of Indian Trail, N.C.; brothers, Roger Claytor of Petersburg, Va., Robert Claytor of Salem, N.C.; sisters, Jessie Smith of Gary, W.Va., Jeanette White of Petersburg, Va., Regina Hawthorne of Bragenton, Fla., and Deborah Tye of Petersburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Tre’Quan Williams, Natalya Claytor and Jasha Brooker, all of Indian Trail, N.C., Jordyn Manns of Hampton, Va., and Delone Manns and Matthew Manns of Phenix City, Ala.; five godchildren, Justin Henry, Brandon Henry, Brandon Hall, Inchantiss Stroud and Marcus Saunders.

Homegoing service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Gospel Lighthouse Church, Fayetteville, W.Va., where friends may call beginning at noon. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park of Beckley, where military graveside service will be conducted.

Robert Clarence ‘Jack’ Frost Sr.



Robert Clarence “Jack” Frost, Sr., 89, of Glen White, departed this world for a better place on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008.

Born Aug. 18, 1918, at War Eagle, W.Va., he was the son of the late Claude V. and Nora Helen Kinser Frost.

He was a retired UMWA member with 50 years of service at Eastern Gas and Fuel.

Our father was a WWII veteran and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. He served in the U.S. Army, serving

in the Guadalcanal Campaign Jan. 10 - Jan. 26, 1943; also served at Schofield BKS TH during the Japanese attack on Island of Oshu, Dec. 7, 1941. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign ribbon, American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Other than his wife, Macie, his other great loves were the Cincinnati Reds, cars and music.

He raised his children to be proud and strong individuals. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Macie Frost and their son, Fredrick James (Jimmy) Frost; he will be buried by their side at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens; and by two brothers, David A. “Hoot” Frost and Charles L. “Pete” Frost.

He is survived by five children, Robert C. Frost Jr. and wife, Pam, of Xenia, Ohio, Deanna L. Gwinn and husband, David, of Bolt, Carolyn J. Richmond and husband, Jarrell, of Beaver, Nancy Lee Null and husband, Russell, of St. Augustine, Fla.; and Joe Friday Frost of Glen White; grandchildren, Robert A. Frost, Michael Frost, Kari Tate, Edward R. Tate, Donna L. Metzger, Samantha J. Frost and Joe Friday Frost Jr.; great-grandchildren, Kaelah R. Madden, Bailey M. Madden, Candi Keith, Autumn R. Frost and Levi C. Frost; great-great grandchildren, Taylor, Keith and Baby Frost; one sister, Betty Jane Sturgill of Oak Hill; and one brother, C. L. Frost of Sullivan.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Pastor Kenneth Parent officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Herman Sturgill will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Mr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Harris, 75, of Pilot Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County, Mount Airy, N.C.

He was born May 6, 1933, in Crab Orchard, W.Va., to the late James R. and Vada Goode Harris.

Mr. Harris served his country in the U.S. Air Force, worked and retired as a coal miner with U.S. Steel and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in King, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Cochran, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Brenda Harris of Fairdale, and Mitchell and Regina Harris of Mead; one daughter and son-in-law, Tabbetha and Jeffrey Glover of Youngsville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Alisha (Darrell) Hughart, Sarah (Stephen) Smith, and Jonathan (Sara) Harris; four great-grandchildren, Auston, Benjamin, Sierra and Spencer; one sister, Nellie Cochram of Midway.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Broyhill and the Rev. Scott Vernon officiating, with interment to follow at Skyline Memory Gardens with full military honors by V.F.W. Post 2019 of Mount Airy and V.F.W. Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at Calvary Baptist Church.

LYNCO — Cora Lee Stamey Harvey, 84, of Lynco, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Cora Lee was born June 14, 1924, in Morganton, N.C., a daughter of the late Walter and Elsie Stamey.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Kopper City Bottom Full Gospel Tabernacle.

Her loving husband, James Howard Harvey; a daughter, Debra Lee “Debbie” Belcher; and two brothers, Roy and Carl Stamey, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Eloise Thomas and husband, Ira, of Burnsville, N.C.; a sister, Wyonnie Clark of Morganton, N.C.; two granddaughters, Tina Matelski and husband, Dennis, and Sheryl Giganti and husband, Vincent IV; a great-grandson, Vincent Giganti V; several sisters and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral service will be noon today at the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with the Rev. Firg Proffitt officiating. Cora Lee will be laid to rest beside her husband in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

William David Holliday Jr.





William David Holliday Jr., 64, of Beckley passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born on Dec. 2, 1943, in Beckley, he was the son of Betty Lou Weaver Holliday of Beckley and the late William David (W.D.) Hol-

liday. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Don Phelps Holliday.

Mr. Holliday was a life long resident of Beckley and vice president of Beckley Welding Supply Co. He was also a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by eight children: W.D. Holliday III of Margate, Fla., Teresa Dawn Holliday of Beckley, Cynthia Miller of Oak Hill, Melissa Bartusiak of Scarbro, Michelle Lou Phillips of Beckley, Dee Dee Lynn Holliday-Reynolds of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Greg Holliday of Shady Spring, and Candi Holliday of Florida; 14 grandchildren; and two sisters, Delores Jean Haines and Diann Ellen Srednicki, both of Beckley, also survive. David will be sadly missed by his entire family.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Wright and Mr. Danny Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley.

LYNCO — Johnathan “Browning” Johnson, 31, of Lynco, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in Pennsylvania from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Aug. 18, 1977, at Man, W.Va., a son of Curtis “Bud” Browning Jr. of Clay, W.Va., and Donna Johnson Fox of Kissimmee, Fla.

Johnathan was a coal truck driver and a 1995 graduate of Oceana High School.

Survivors also include his stepmother, Missy Browning of Clay; grandparents, Curtis and Betty Browning of Oceana, Arvis Johnson of Oceana and Bertha Taylor of Kissimmee, Fla.; a sister, Tonya Ortega of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Cory Browning and wife, Alina, of Kissimmee, Fla.; two nieces, Aja Browning and Maricel Ortega; a nephew, Julian Dewey; uncle and aunt, Randy and Tina Browning of Oceana, aunt and uncle, Delores and Larry Arbogast of Bluff City, Tenn.; cousins, Natasha “Tash” Browning Cook of Fairdale, Holly Runyon of Oceana and her children, Kameron, Konnor and Kahne; and a host of other loving family and friends.

DANESE — Nona Irene Kincaid, 80, of Crickmer Road, passed away late Monday evening, Nov. 3, 2008, at her home, following a short illness.

Born Feb. 15, 1928, at Kathryn, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred Harrison and Bessie Mae Goddard Fox. She was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church at Crickmer, and also attended the Chestnut Knob Christian Church of Layland.

Mrs. Kincaid was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a homemaker.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Alfred Kincaid, in 1985; two daughters, Irene Kincaid and Wilma Armstrong; a brother, James Harrison Fox; and a great-grandson, Caleb Nathanael Mullins.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Lilly and husband, Bill, of Layland; two sons, Alfred Kincaid of Meadow Bridge and Richard Kincaid of Danese; a son-in-law, Waymen Armstrong of Corliss; a sister, Hattie Walker of Danese; five granddaughters, Shiela Davis and husband, Mike, of Clarksville, Tenn., Juanita Mullins and husband, Marvin, of Layland, Lisa Crookshanks and husband, Randy, of Loops Road, April Rozell and husband, Chris, of Layland and Rebecca Evans and husband, Charlie, of Scarbro; a grandson, William Gene Lilly Jr. of Layland; four great-granddaughters, Kindra Felver, Hannah Crookshanks, Megan Evans and Kierston Rozell; three great-grandsons, Joey Crookshanks, Kobe Rozell and Cody Evans; two step great-granddaughters, Hannah and Kriztina Davis; and two step great-grandsons, Chuck and Travis Evans.

MULLENS — Frederick R. Shutt Jr., 80, of Mullens, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1927, at Wyco, he was the son of the late Frederick R. Shutt Sr. and Fern Ramsey Shutt.

Mr. Shutt was a salesman for coal mining supplies with over 30 years of service, having worked for Persinger Supply and Austin Powder Company.

He was a lifelong member of the Mullens United Methodist Church, a member of the Mullens Masonic Lodge No. 151 A.F. & A.M., Beni Kedem Shrine Temple of Charleston, Mullens Moose Lodge No. 750, Fraternal Order of Eagles of Beckley, The National Association for Amateur Radios and a lifelong member of Mullens American Legion Post No. 106. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, having served during WWII.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Janet Meredith Shutt; and a sister, Peggy Hill.

Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Danakee Clegg and her husband, Randy, of Beaufort, S.C.; a son, Ricky Shutt of Mullens; a step-grandson, Jacob Clegg of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Reginald Conrad Shutt and his wife, Merita, of Alabama; and a special niece, Konnie Ann Shutt Bell of Statesville, N.C.

Service will be noon Friday at the Mullens United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Garland Egram Sisk Jr., 77, of Coal City, died at his residence, Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, following a long illness.

Born June 30, 1931, at Garwood, W.Va., he was the son of the late Garland Egram and Marie Cole Sisk Sr.

He was a retired coal miner from Amigo Smokeless Coal, a member of the UMWA and a former member of the Sophia-Midway VFW and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Garland was a U.S. Army veteran and had been a resident of Raleigh County for the past 30 years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Kay Sisk; brothers, Willis Sisk, Gideon Sisk, Frankie Ball and Billy Ball; sisters, Lilly Green, Bernice Carter and Rosie Ball.

Survivors include his companion, Beverly Colvin; sons, Roger Sisk of Oak Hill, James Sisk of Winston-Salem, N.C., Danny Sisk of Oak Hill and Daniel Sisk of Sullivan; daughters, Sandra Pino of Oak Hill, Tina Adkins and Lisa Sisk, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers, Roy and Ray Sisk of Deleware; sisters, Evelyn Sisk O’Niel of Deleware, Julia Ford of Mabscott, Margaret Stafford of Man, W.Va., and Nancy Ball of Florida; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dwayne Hite and Pastor Garry Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Calfee Cemetery at Mount Tabor. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110.

Eugene S. Wright





PRINCETON — Eugene S. Wright, 92, of Princeton, formerly of Lashmeet, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Ridgecare Assisted Living in Princeton.

Born Nov. 20, 1915, at Lashmeet, he was the son of the late Daniel Wright and Myrtle Wheeler Wright.

Mr. Wright was a retired coal miner, starting his service in 1935. When he retired, he was a superintendent for Wright Coal Co. He also worked for the West Virginia Liquor Commissioner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze service stars, Arrowhead Bronze Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze service stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Church, where he was the oldest member of the church. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Montrosse Wright, in 1996; one brother, Okley Wright; and one sister, Gertrude Thompson.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. William Hill and Larry Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, where military honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council and the WV National Guard Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Chapel Church, 2059 Wright Mountain Road, Rock, WV 24747.
