Eunice Alexander




MOUNT HOPE — Eunice Alexander, 78, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Zala B. Ames




GATESVILLE, Texas — Zala Ballengee Markin Ames, born January 23, 1912 in Sandstone, W.Va. to Mary Alice and Amos Ballengee, went to be with The Lord on September 29, 2008 at the home of her beloved daughter, Debbie Seidler, with Debbie by her side. After years of remaining single in order to stay at home and care for her ailing parents until their passing, she was employed at Pinecrest Sanitarium in Beckley, where Zala cared for tuberculosis patients. Later, she worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Md. Zala became the wife of Ebbie Markin from 1948 until his death in 1978. Upon learning of the needs of an abandoned toddler, the child of an acquaintance of Ebbie’s, Zala did not hesitate in coming to the rescue, eventually becoming the proud mother of adopted daughter Deborah Ann in 1963.

Before rejoining Debbie toward the end of her life, Zala resided at Manor House in Beckley, for 20 years. Enjoying some of the happiest times of her 96 years, she developed many lasting friendships there and gained great popularity among the many residents. She was very independent and active well into her nineties. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, General Andrew Lewis Chapter, Zala also attended United Methodist Temple in Beckley. Greatly loved and respected by all those fortunate enough to grace her path, Zala was known for her generosity and wonderful sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by first husband, Ebbie Markin; second husband, Glenis G. Ames; brothers, Columbus Lee Ballengee, Carson William Ballengee and wife Elsie, Lawrence Everett Ballengee and wife Frances; sisters, Lottie May Ballengee Cales and husband Clyde, Ina Faye Ballengee Chandler and husband Merritt, and Mable Ballenge.

Zala is survived by her daughter, Deborah Ann Markin Seidler and husband Harold, as well as many family members and friends who loved her dearly.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Arthur G. Dixon Jr., age 85, passed away on Oct. 9, 2008.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Wujek-Calcaterra and Sons, Inc. (Shelby Township), 54880 Van Dyke and 25 Mile Road. Visitation will be Sunday evening, Oct. 12, 2008. Michael Dallie Goff




MOUNT HOPE — Michael Dallie Goff, 40, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Born December 7, 1969, he was the son of Hazel Goff and the late Dallie Allen.

Michael enjoyed riding his Harley. He was self employed as a Tree/Trimmer Worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Hazel Goff of Mount Hope, W.Va.; brothers, Joshua Earl Hunter and wife Tiffany of Mohawk, W.Va., Teddy Allen of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sister, Judy Beursley and husband Rick of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sons Matthew Goff and Robert Allen of Daytona Beach Fla.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2008 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Burial will follow at Allen Cemetery, Bolt, W.Va.

Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Violet Marie Harless




MOUNT HOPE — Violet Marie Harless, 91, formerly of Mount Hope, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 9, 2008. At the time of her death, Mrs. Harless resided in the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Salem, W.Va. She was born October 29, 1916, a daughter of the late Leonard and Nell Cook Acord.

She was the wife of Leland B. Harless, who passed away November 3, 1981.

Violet is survived by her daughter, Betty Lilly and her husband Rev. Gene Burnside, Nutter Fort; her son, Jack Harless and his wife Joyce, Durham, N.C.; four grandchildren, Tomi Davis and her husband Bill, Morgantown; Timothy Lilly and his wife Donna, Goochland, Va.; Jeremy Harless and his wife Elizabeth, and Bradford Harless, all of Raleigh, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Stephen Davis and his wife Kristina; Stacy Hollar and her husband Brad; Alex Lilly; and Amy Lilly; and great-great-grandchildren, Rylie and Evan Hollar.

Violet was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Acord Cook; and brothers, Willis Acord, Jack Acord, her twin Vernon Acord, and Bill Acord.

Violet was a member of the Nutter Fort Baptist Church before residing in Mount Hope.

Henry W. Hylton




BUD MOUNTAIN — Henry W. Hylton, 76, of Bud Mountain, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008 in a Beckley Hospital following a short illness.

Born August 9, 1932 at Bud, W.Va., he was the son of the late Sam Hylton and Lilly Bishop Hylton.

Mr. Hylton was a long time resident of Bud Mountain, an active member of the Guyandotte Baptist Church, a volunteer for the Itmann Food Bank, a former coal miner with over 15 years of service having worked at Slab Fork and Alpoca, a member of UMWA and was a very proud disabled U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

In addition to his parents he is also preceded by a daughter, Melinda Kay Hylton; a sister, Allie Mae Green and her husband Clarence; and a sister in law Bobette Hylton.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Olia Bell Hylton; one daughter, Anna Marie Hylton of Mullens; one son, William Stacy Hylton and his wife Cheryl of Bud Mountain; six sisters, Mary Isom and her husband Robert of Beckley, Sadie Bishop and her husband David of Delaware, Goldie Jacobs of Princeton, Sylvia Hill of Virginia, Virginia Ward of Princeton and Dora Sizemore and her husband Harrison (Junior) of Princeton; two brothers, Donald Hylton and his wife Carrie of Bud Mountain and Robert Hylton and his wife Joyce of Bud Mountain; three grandchildren, William Eric Hylton and his wife Melissa Dawn and their children William James and Tabatha Dawn of Statesville, N.C., Amie Hylton and Elizabeth Hylton, both of Bud Mountain and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Guyandotte Baptist Church, Herndon Heights with Elder Nathan Lane and Rev. William O. Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow in the Lusk Cemetery at Herndon Heights.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Rob Hylton, Bradley Hylton, Mark Hylton, Brian Stanley, Tony Mullens and Bruce Bachmeier.

Patsy L. Cox Lowe




Patsy L. Cox Lowe, age 78, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born on June 7, 1930, at Flat Top, she was the daughter of Sylvia Moye Cox of Shady Spring and the late Columbus (Lumie) Cox.

Mrs. Lowe was a former employee of the G.C. Murphy Co. in Hinton, before she moved to Michigan, where she lived for 30 years. She returned back to West Virginia to make her home since 2000.

Mrs. Lowe was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, Mich., and attended the Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley.

She was the first granddaughter of the late and Mamie Moye.

Mrs. Lowe was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Cox.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Johnny K. Lowe of Beckley; a daughter, Shirley Kay Richmond of Charleston; three sisters, Jessie Mae Krumholz and husband, Karl of Daniels, Mary Ann Milam and husband, Donald of Alderson, and Betty Scarbrough of Beckley, and brother-in-law, Chick Scarbrough; two brothers, Russell Cox of Glen Morgan, and Joe Cox and wife, Katie of Stanaford, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Paul Blizard officiating. Burial will follow in the Moye Family Cemetery at Flat Top.

Friends may call two hours prior to the services.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Eugene Milam, Dewayne Milam, Mel Cooper, Randy Mullins, Joey Cox and Jeff Cox.

VICTOR — Jason Stanley Pritt, 36, of Victor, passed away at his home Thursday October 9, 2008 following a sudden illness.

Mr. Pritt was born January 26, 1972 in Montgomery and was the son of Stanley R. Pritt of Turkey Creek and the late Emma Jean Ramsey Pritt.

Mr. Pritt was a self employed Heavy Equipment Operator and attended the Ansted Baptist Church in Ansted.

Other than his father he is survived by his wife Briana Potter Pritt of Victor; one daughter Sarah Jean Pritt at home; one sister Jeweia Jones and her husband Steven of Dixie and one brother Jonah Pritt and his wife Melissa of Victor.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at the Chapel Of Rest Mausoleum at Victor with Pastor Warren Gilpen officiating. Burial will follow in the Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor. There will be no prior visitation.
