Roscoe Carlos Brown Jr.
BLUEFIELD — Roscoe Carlos Brown Jr., 55, of Bluefield, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2008, in Bluefield of natural causes.
Born Sept. 4, 1953, in Beckley, he was the son of Roscoe and Ruby Acord Brown of Lester, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert and Sylvia Acord, and grandfather, Lloyd Brown.
Mr. Brown was a former coal miner working in local mines in Raleigh and Logan counties and Oklahoma.
In addition to his parents he is survived by a son, Keith Brown of Lester; two daughters, Laurie Ann Wooden and husband J.J. of Henegar, Ala., and Tiffany Skye Brown of Princeton, W.Va.; sister, Diane Loggins and husband Howard of Amigo, W.Va.; brother, Darrel Brown and wife Patricia of Glen Daniel; seven grandchildren: Ariel Brown of Palmer, Alaska, Nikki Brown of Lester, Kathryn, Beth, Madison, Jackson and Luke Wooden of Henegar, Ala.; nieces, April Dawn Sauls and husband Matt of Fairdale, Ronitta Brown of Grandview; nephew, Patrick Loggins and wife Ashley of Lester, Michael Brown of Williamsburg, Va.; and grandmother, Mabel Brown of LaPlata, Md.
By his wishes his body was cremated. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Beatrice Ruth Morrison Bryan
LEWISBURG — Beatrice Ruth Morrison Bryan passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a brief illness. She was 90 years young and still enjoyed life to the fullest extent possible.
Born July 27, 1918, at Slate, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Cecil and Clancie Ball Morrison.
Mrs. Bryan had been a resident of Lewisburg for many years, worked at the Viscos Corporation in Parkersburg, attended Alderson-Broaddus College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, worked as a substitute and homebound teacher in the Greenbrier County School system and as a special education teacher at Ronceverte Elementary until her retirement, received her master’s degree in teaching through Marshall University and the College of Graduate Studies, member of First Baptist Church of Fairlea for 42 years where she taught Sunday school and served actively in the church. She was also a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Lewisburg Lioness Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph L. Bryan Jr., whom she married on June 12, 1948, and was married 45 years until his death on Oct. 10, 1993; her twin brother, Dr. B. Ross Morrison; a sister, Gladys Carpenter, and a brother, Clark, who died in infancy.
Survivors include her only son, Dr. William J. Bryan and wife, Elisa, who was the daughter she never had, of Beaver Dam, Ky.; a grandson, Joseph L. Bryan of LaPorte, Texas; a granddaughter, Hannah E. Bryan of Beaver Dam, Ky.; a sister, Lucille Lockhart; three brothers, Cecil Morrison, Jim Morrison and Joe Morrison; numerous beloved nieces, nephews and many faithful friends.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the Shepherd’s Center, Lewisburg, and its many volunteers, to Judy Long, Lisa Raabe, Renee Clendenin and to her church family and many other special friends and caregivers who supported her so faithfully these last several years.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with her son officiating.
Graveside rites and interment will be conducted by her nephew, the Rev. David Carpenter, at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Mineral Wells, W.Va.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Gideons International for the placement of Bibles in her memory.

Edwin O. Davis Jr. of the community of Saxon passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, in a Beckley hospital. He was 76 years of age.

HOLDEN — Charlotte “Chocklate” Carol Dickens, 66, of Holden, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008.

CHARLESTON — Harold H. Griffith, of Charleston, died peacefully on Sept. 28, 2008.
A memorial service to honor the life of Harold H. Griffith will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at St. Marks United Methodist Church Chapel. Entombment will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.

Iris M. Lucas
Iris M. Lucas, 92, of Beckley, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born Oct. 12, 1915, at Pluto, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Della Richmond Adkins.
Iris was a homemaker and a member of the Pluto Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lucas; her sister, Beulah Hall; and by brothers, Arlo, Phillip and Roland Adkins. She was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County.
Survivors include sisters, Patty O. Jessup of Beckley, and Lila Hopkins of Coal City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Walls officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, Va. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to service on Wednesday.
Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Ruby Lea Morgan
PINEVILLE — Ruby Lea Morgan, 78, of Pineville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness.
Born June 16, 1930, in Pageton, McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Charles B. and Ollie Sexton Taylor.
Ruby was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County. She was a caseworker with the W.Va. Department of Health and Human Resources for 13 years. Ruby loved cats. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and feeding the birds.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud Taylor and Gene Taylor, and a sister, Ruth Aliff.
Survivors include her loving husband of 60 years, Mack Morgan; a son, Larry Morgan and his wife, Connie, of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Sherri Morgan-Ellison and her husband, Tim Ellison, of Pineville; a brother, Edmond Taylor of Pasadena, Md.; a sister, Betty Graham of Highland, Texas; two grandchildren, Larry Morgan Jr. of Richmond, Va., and Shawn Morgan and his wife, Suzanne, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a special friend, Judy Browning of Pineville.
A celebration of Ruby’s life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Doc Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
Pallbearers will be Randall Aliff, Mike Johnson, Tommy Blankenship, Roger Snow, Chris Spears and John Jeremy Jude.
Family will receive friends from noon until time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Nellie Maurine Godbey Phillips, 86, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008. She was the daughter of the late John and Ollie McCutcheon Godbey.

James E. ‘Jim’ Richardson Jr.
CONCORD, N.C. — James E. “Jim” Richardson Jr., 83, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, surrounded by his family.
Born May 7, 1925, at Glen Rogers, W.Va., Jim served in the U.S. Marine Corps fighting in the Pacific Campaign of World War II during the U.S. capture of Iwo Jima. He was a proud alumnus of West Virginia University. Following 32 years of service, he retired from E.I. Dupont in 1985.
Married 52 years, Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine G. Richardson; five children, Larry Richardson and his wife, Pat, of Roanoke, Va., Cheryl Lawson and her husband, Larry, of Phoenixville, Pa., James “Bo” Richardson and his wife, Mary, of Davidson, N.C., Jamie “Li’” Richardson of Concord, N.C., John D. Richardson and his wife, Margaret, of Newnan, Ga.; four grandchildren, Lauren Lawson and Alexa, Kelly and Jamie Richardson; and two sisters, Betty Fonner of Morgantown, W.Va., and Helen Scott of North Augusta, S.C.
A memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at the Hartsell Funeral Home’s Chapel in Concord, 460 Branchview Drive N.E., Concord, N.C.
