Robert Johnson Ashworth
Robert Johnson Ashworth, 99, of 206 Elkins St., Beckley, died Oct. 2, 2008, at The Villages at Greystone.
He was the son of the late Dr. Robert A. Ashworth and Dorth-ula Johnson Ashworth of Mounds-ville, W.Va. He was born in McDowell County, W.Va., on May 8, 1909.
Mr. Ashworth was a graduate of Moundsville High School and the West Virginia University Law School with a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence. Admitted to the bar on June 10, 1931, he practiced law in Beckley for over 65 years.
Robert Ashworth was appointed Judge of the Circuit Court of Raleigh County in 1988 to finish C. Berkley Lilly’s unexpired term. During his lengthy legal practice he held partnerships with his brother, Judge John C. Ashworth, and Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick. He also served 40 years as Fiduciary Commissioner.
Mr. Ashworth was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was active in Republican politics, serving as Raleigh County chairman for several years and was a delegate to one Republican National Convention. He was an honorary life member of Beckley Lodge 1452 B.P.O.E., serving as Exalted Ruler and District Deputy of Grand Exalted Ruler and a member of Beckley Lodge No. 1606 Loyal Order of Moose. He was a 50-year 32nd Degree member of the Masonic Lodge No. 95, Beni Kedem Shrine and former member of Lions International. He was a charter member of the Flat Top Lake Association and served 24 years as a director and three terms as President of the association.
Mr. Ashworth also served as Police Judge of Beckley and City Attorney of Beckley. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and a part owner and president of Richmond Cleaners and Laundry.
He was a most loyal Mountaineer and an avid West Virginia University football fan who witnessed the very first and last games in the old Mountaineer Field and the first game in the current Mountaineer Field; and in between saw games involving the Mountaineers in 17 other states. Mr. Ashworth also loved hunting, fishing and a good game of poker.
Preceding him in death were brothers, Dr. Harold B., Charles V., and John C. Ashworth; and sisters, Betty Fulkerson and Dorothy Howell. His first wife, Virginia Hill Ashworth, died on Sept. 7, 1986.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Blanche Woods Ashworth; two daughters, Nancy Lee Sanderbeck and her husband, Jack, of Concord, N.C., and Joan Ashworth of Beckley. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Karen Greer and Virginia Blosser, both of Beckley, and Beth Ellen Sanderbeck of Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandsons, John Scott San-derbeck of Houston, Texas, and Robert Jay Sanderbeck of Ocala, Fla.; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Robert Stoddard officiating, with a eulogy by Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home in Beckley.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Raleigh County Bar Association.
Pallbearers will be Tom Truman, Jack Roop, C.O. Smith, Bill Leadbetter, Hadge Hissim, Bill O’Connor, Robert Sayre, Bruce Lazenby, and Larry Frail.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Methodist Church, 217 S. Heber St., Beckley, WV 25801, and Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Dorothy Louise Bowling, of Albany, Ga., formerly of Marfrance and Rupert, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in Georgia.

Johnny D. Crouch
Johnny D. Crouch passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008.
Born Jan. 23, 1940, in Sanger, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry and Annie Crouch.
Johnny was a people person. He never met a stranger. He was a very sweet person. If he thought someone needed anything, he would give what he had. Johnny loved to go hunting and fishing and was an avid race fan. He loved any and every sport. Johnny was the manager of Shooters for 17 years. There was not one person that didn’t like Johnny. He made ever-yone feel comfortable.
Johnny loved his family. He had so many special friends and he will be sadly missed.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Tammy Crouch of Cranberry; a son, Brian Crouch of Cranberry; grandsons, Austin Crouch of Crab Orchard and Tray Crouch of Crab Orchard; a granddaughter, Kapelyn Crouch of Crab Orchard; brothers, Carlos Crouch and wife Linda of Beckley, Pat Crouch and wife Patricia of Beckley, and James “Herbie” Crouch of Beckley; sisters, Linda “Susie” Mays and husband Rod of Beckley and Roseanna Anglin of Cranberry; uncle, William Roman and wife Hazel of Mount Hope; Sue Crouch, the mother of his children; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Cranberry Baptist Church, with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church.

Charlotte C. Dicken, 66, of Holden, departed this life Saturday morning, Oct. 4, 2008, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Charlotte L. Duncan
BALLARD — Charlotte L. Duncan, age 74, of Ballard, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at the Summers Nursing and Rehab Center, Hinton, W.Va.
Born Sept. 20, 1934, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late James and Sadie Redden.
Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker, a member of the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, a former member of the Lindside Ruritan Club, and served as a volunteer with the Cherith Ministry.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Duncan; and a son, Larry Duncan.
Survivors include two sons, Vernon Duncan and wife Becky of Taylorsville, N.C., and Kenneth Duncan and wife Karen of Harrisburg, Pa.; two daughters, Dr. Marlyn Boyd and husband Dr. Robert Boyd of Columbia, S.C., and Sandra Hardin and husband Dr. Kevin Hardin of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Curtis Redden of LaMesa, Calif., Sherman Redden of Crab Orchard, W.Va., and Roy Redden of Mabscott, W.Va.; two sisters, Barbara Brown of Berlin, Md., and Shirley White of North Myers, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, Oct. 5, 2008, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, with Rev. Jimmy Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Bradley Cemetery, Lindside, W.Va.
Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Lucy May Adkins Estep, 77 years old, of Comfort, W.Va., passed away on Oct. 3, 2008.

David Lee Gilkeson
David Lee Gilkeson, 50, of Rupert, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a short illness.
Born on July 19, 1958, at Rupert, he was the son of the late John and Virgie Hunter Gilkeson.
David was known in the work force as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He was a member of the Smoot Baptist Church. His most important challenge and joy was raising his son, Waylon Matthew, and his daughter, “Ginnie” Virginia Marie.
Other survivors include a brother, Paul R. Gilkeson and wife Sharon of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Mark Gilkeson and wife Anne of Fayetteville; a sister, Susie Kanode and husband James of Rainelle; a special cousin, Tom Patterson and wife Karen of Smoot; two uncles, Bob Gilkeson and wife Freda of Woodbridge, Va., and Charles Gilkeson and wife Sharon of Talcott; an aunt, Faye Patterson of Smoot; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be 3 p.m. today at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Jim Luchsinger officiating. Burial will follow in the McElhenny Cemetery at Grassy Meadows.
Friends may call one hour before the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to the children in care of Paul Gilkeson, 5528 Consul Drive, Roanoke, VA 24019.

Tildy Roseanne ‘Annie’ Stewart
Tildy Roseanne “Annie” Stewart, 44, of Rainelle, formerly of Bud, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2008, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a long illness.
Annie was born on April 4, 1964, in Detroit, Mich.
She worked as a CNA at Pinecrest in Beckley for many years. As much as she enjoyed her work with the patients she attended to, nothing was more precious to her than her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Russell Smailes; a son, Danny Patton at home; two daughters, Jillraye Anderson at home and Salinda Anderson of Florida; two stepsons, Michael Smailes and companion Loretta Stroud and Mark Smailes and companion Denise Smelcer, all of Danese; a stepdaughter, Mindy Reed and husband John Jr. of Clintonville; a sister, Lovely Harbath and husband Kenneth of Bud; and eight stepgrandchildren, Tyler, Hannah, and Russell Lee Smailes, Donnie and Donita Smelcer, and Valerie Smailes, all of Danese, and Chelsea and Savanah Reed of Clintonville.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in the Sims Cemetery on Loops Road, Rainelle, with Pastor Bennie Kenney officiating.
There will be no visitation.
