Stanley O. Blake

COTTLE — Stanley O. Blake of Cottle, formerly of Prosperity, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 21, 1934, in Orlando, W.Va., he was the son of the late Vayden and Ruth (Tenney) Blake.

Stanley was a United States Navy veteran who served in the Korean Conflict. He was a past Commander of the American Legion and VFW.

His favorite pastime activity was hunting on his family’s farm in Braxton County.

For many years, he was employed as the shop manager for Norwood and later retired from Mountain State University as postmaster.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Randy Blake, and brothers Robert, Vernon, and Junior Blake.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Laura (Rogers) Blake; sons, Stanley and his wife Janet of Athens, Steve and his wife Peggy of Columbus, Ohio, John and his wife Concetta of Webster Springs, Danny and his wife Jill of Crab Orchard; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Patty Mudge, Betty Crites, Jean Hornbeck and Leota Rose; brothers, John Blake and Larry Blake; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Graveside memorial rites will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 3110.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Theodore R. ‘Ted’ Brown

Mr. Theodore R. “Ted” Brown, 95, of Beckley received his call from God to come home on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House following an extended illness.

Born April 12, 1913, to the late Roy and Beatrice Brown, he was the first black male to be born in the town of Lester.

Mr. Brown was a member in good standing of St. Paul Baptist Temple, where he attended regularly until his health prevented him. His faith in God never waivered.

He worked in the shipping yards of Norfolk, Va., the coal fields of W.Va., and was the first black Deputy Sheriff in Raleigh County. He retired from the Raleigh County Courthouse as superintendent of the janitorial department. “Ted” obtained another job after retirement at Richmond Cleaners.

His passions included cars, fishing and he was an avid bowler, rightfully earning much respect at Leisure Lanes receiving numerous trophies, awards and recognition in several divisions.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; brother, Morris Brown; and sister, Rhea “Toot” Smith.

Mr. Brown leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and very devoted special friends, Daisy Kessler and Tami Kessler-Vaughan.

Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at St. Paul Baptist Temple, 129 Rice St., Beckley, with Rev. Walter Leach, Rev. Nathaniel Carey and Rev. Ronald Dyer officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Margaret Rose Chapman

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Margaret Rose Chapman, age 91, of State College, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the Mt. Nittany Medical Center, State College.

Born April 11, 1917, in Teaberry, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Light Leroy and Mary Ethel Leighton Anderson.

She retired from the medical records department of Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, W.Va.

She was the widow of David E. Chapman.

Surviving are three sons, David A. of State College, Thomas A. of Lexington, Ky., and William E. of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a sister, Mary LeGrand of Independence, Mo.; two brothers, Marvin Anderson and Leighton “Andy” Anderson, both of Hinton, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mechanicsburg Cemetery with the Rev. Lucretia Hurley-Browning officiating.

Rose Alberta ‘Bertie’ Coffman

TERRY — Rose Alberta “Bertie” Coffman, age 99, of Terry, W.Va., went home to be with Jesus on Sept. 28, 2008, after a brief illness.

Bertie was born Sept. 6, 1909, at Rock Creek, W.Va., to the late Celia Clementine and William Sherdan Price.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Lee Coffman Sr.; one daughter, Evelyn Mae Kershner; three sons, Fredrick Lee Coffman Jr., Danny Keith Coffman and Herman Sherrill Coffman; three grandsons, Jackie Joe Coffman II, Troy Daren Lambert and Mitchell Brian Lambert; one granddaughter, Sheila Jean Dunlow; and one great-granddaughter, Rachel Kershner. She will be sadly missed by her children, Jackie Joe Coffman of Minden, W.Va., Brenda Sue Kuhn of Buckhannon, W.Va., and Linda Lou Lilly of Spanishburg, W.Va.; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 38 great-great-grandchildren, and six great-great-great-grandchildren.

Bertie was a devoted Christian wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed cooking for her family. She loved working in her flowers and reading her Bible. Her favorite thing to do was feed the flocks of birds that descended in her yard and watch them for hours.

Memorial service will be 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Ghent Church of God. Food will be provided for family and friends by Ghent Church of God immediately following the service. Rev. Phillip Farrington will be officiating.

BROOKS — Edwin Gerald Goddard, 82, of Brooks, died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at his home, following a long illness.

Born March 29, 1926, at Katherine, he was the son of the late Lonnie and Erma McClannahan Goddard.

He was retired from the CSX Corp. with 43 years of service where he worked as a welder and in track maintenance.

Preceded in death by his wife Mildred Fox Goddard and one son, Aubrey Gale Goddard.

Survived by one son, Edwin Gerald Goddard Jr. and wife Carolyn of Jumping Branch; one grandson, Edwin Gerald Goddard III of Jumping Branch; three granddaughters, Tabitha Faith Goddard of Jumping Branch, Crystal Dawn Baker and husband Chris of Renick and Melissa Renee Joline Stanley and husband Jason of Clayton; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nina Van Milligan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Arnetha Kay Goddard of Red Springs.

CHARMCO — Rita Dare Loudermilk, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a long illness.

Born Aug. 21, 1923, at Williamsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Hiram Ross Dove and Nellie Evelyn Wyatt Dove.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Earl Loudermilk, and her brother, Earl Pershing Dove.

Survivors include two daughters, Lorena James and husband, Paul, of Rainelle, and Patricia Wilson and husband, Bill, of McRoss; three grandchildren, Michael James and wife, Georgane, of Clintonville, Donna Mahaffey and husband, Doc, of Charlotte, N.C., and Lisa Morgan and husband, Jason, of Ronceverte; and five great-grandchildren, Myka James, Chris James, Justin Saunders, Garrett Mahaffey and Ally Mahaffey. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Bob Scharnhorst officiating and Pastor Keith Shumaker assisting. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

LOCHGELLY — Rebecca Rae Plasha, 58, of Lochgelly, W.Va., went to be with Jesus and her mommy and daddy on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Dec. 8, 1949, at Kingston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Betty Lou Nicholls Plasha and John James Plasha.

Becky had been a beloved resident at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill for a number of years. She had been a member of the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene since she was a child. Her church family received numerous blessings throughout the years because of her. Her sister Bonnie wishes to express her gratitude to the wonderful congregation at the church for all the love, support and devotion they have shown.

She was preceded in death by an older sister, Sharon Kay Plasha.

Her younger sister, Bonnie Gay Plasha of Maple Fork, survives.

Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. She will be entombed beside her parents at the High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Oak Hill.

RIPLEY — Thelma Louise Ratliff, 82, of Ripley, formerly of Corinne, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Jackson County General Hospital in Ripley. She joined in Heaven her departed husband, Clifford Junior Ratliff; their son, Rondal Dale Ratliff of Kansas City, Mo.; her brother, Roger Cook of Virginia Beach, Va.; her brother, Luther Thompson of Bluewell; her sister, Geneva Dotson of Bluewell; her grandson, Ricky Horn of Emporia, Va.; and her friend and neighbor, Ray Edwards of Corinne.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1926, at Iaeger, McDowell County, and was the daughter of the late Richard and Dollie Mullins Cook.

She worked for many years at Peerless Cleaners in Mullens, and was also a Route Manager for the Beckley Post Herald in Wyoming County. She attended the Amigo Baptist Church and Mullens Wesleyan Church. She was a lifelong resident of Corinne in Wyoming County.

She is survived by her four children, Jimmy Ratliff and wife Jenny of Baltimore, Md.; Brenda Milam and husband Mike (whom she considered a son) of Ripley; Roy Horn and wife Carla of Welch.

She was the loving and adored grandmother of grandchildren: Andrea Nolin of Mechanicville, Md.; Rebecca Horn of Hagerstown, Md.; Brandi Johnston of Ripley; Michael (Spud) Milam of Morgantown; Tonya Ratliff of New York City; Christi Ratliff of Greenville, N.C.; and Natasha Ratliff of Kansas City, Mo. She had six great-grandchildren: Ricky Horn; Ryan, Alec and Christian Nolin; Presli Milam; and Lauren Ratliff.

She is also survived by her loving sisters, Elsie Dotson and husband Perry Dotson of Chesapeake, Va., and Carrie Wethington of Virginia Beach, Va.; and also her best friend and neighbor, Jane Lusk of Corinne.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Mark Wethington officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

CROZET, Va. — Mary Eleanor Sears, 86, of Crozet, Va., died at her residence on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 24, 1921, in Hominy Falls, she was the daughter of the late John Edgar and Susie McClung McCutcheon.

She retired from Con-Agra in 1989.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ohlan Nathan-iel Sears, and two sons, William Jennings Shawver and Larry Gene Sears.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Shawver Hutsenpiller of Rainelle; a son, James Ohlan Sears of Crozet, Va.; a sister, Ida Lee Viers of Quinwood; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Michael James Streho Jr.

Michael James Streho Jr., of Purity Hill, Eccles, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at his home of cancer. He was 67 years of age.

Born at Glen Rogers on Feb. 13, 1941, he was the eldest of four children born to the late Michael James and Maude Fanning Streho.

Michael spent his early years in Cleveland and Bolt before his family settled in Eccles. A graduate of Trap Hill School, Class of 1959, he entered the U.S. Air Force where he served his country for over 25 years. His duty tours included Germany, Vietnam, Greenland, North Dakota, California and Michigan. Among his many citations, decorations, and medals, he was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; two Bronze Stars, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster; and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. He retired in 1984 with the rank of SMSGT. Michael eventually returned to his childhood roots at Eccles and began a career with the Internal Revenue Service. He was of the Christian faith.

The devoted husband of Sarah Grace Tunno Elia Streho; he was the beloved father of Andra Streho of Stafford, Texas, and Dottie Matlock and her husband Steve of Gretna, La.; the doting grandfather of 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; the dear brother of Helene Hill and her husband Jim of Fairfax, Va.; Valerie Shrewsbury and her husband Frank of Crab Orchard; Victoria Way and her husband Jim of Beckley; the fond stepfather of Richard Elia of Beaver Falls, Pa., Rocco Elia and his wife Cathy of Lancaster, Ohio, Debbie Weese of Rochester, Pa.; the kind brother-in-law of Yvonne Biega and her husband Bernie and Louise Dunham and her husband Paul, all of Darlington, Pa.; Joe Tunno and his wife Maxine of Koppel, Pa.; Richard Tunno and his wife Shirley of Lewis Run, Pa.; and Robert Tunno and his wife Sandy of Smethport, Pa.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Melton Mortuary with the Rev. Richard Sellards officiating. Michael will then be laid to rest beside his parents at the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday evening, at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

The Oak Post 3110 , Veterans of Foreign Wars, will conduct military rites at the gravesite.

ZION MOUNTAIN — Frances Marie Dustin Turner, 83, of Zion Mountain died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in Summers County A.R.H., Hinton, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 30, 1924, at Clendenin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Tilden James Dustin and Lula Mae Estep Dustin McDonald.

Frances was a homemaker and member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church on Zion Mountain.

“Our mother will be sadly missed. She was a devoted and loving Christian wife, mother and grandmother. Everyone that knew her loved her kind and gentle heart, and admired her devotion to the Lord.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Preston Turner Jr.; one son, Richard Dean Turner; grandson, Darrell Ray Turner Jr.; two brothers, Roscoe and Wilbur Dustin; and two sisters, Rosalie Frame and Vada Statts.

HINTON — Barbara J. “Jackie” Young, 75, of Hinton passed away at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation at Hilldale following a long illness.

Jackie was born Oct. 23, 1932, to the late Jasper Jackson and Nina Palmer Allen.

She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church at Powley’s Creek.

Preceding her in death were her sister, Ardella Allen Meadows, and her brother, Thomas Allen.

Survivors include a brother, Jacob Lee Allen of Hinton; nephews, Philip Meadows and wife Debbie of Hinton, Terry Meadows on Monroe, N.C., and Thomas Jay Allen of Hinton; nieces, Kendra Meadows of Beaver, Marcella Kinder and husband George of Charleston, Dyneal Garten and husband Jeff of Talcott, and Nina LaGaye Wills of Talcott; sister-in-law, Barbara Allen of Hinton; special friend, Wilma Angotti of Hinton. Jackie is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at the Allen Cemetery on Willowwood Road near Hinton with John McCain, Minister of the Hinton Church of Christ, officiating. There will be no visitation.

Pallbearers will be Philip Meadows, Johnny Richards, Willie Hilton, Art Sanda, Gary Browning and Arnold Lee Johnson.
