LINDSIDE — Thelma Francis Booth, 84, of Lindside, passed away Sept. 25, 2008.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Wickline Funeral Home in Lindside. Burial will follow at Bradley Cemetery in Lindside. Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Samuel Lee Burns, 62, passed away in Miami, Fla., on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2008, at the St. James United Methodist Church in White Sulphur Springs. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the service Monday at the church.

Bobbie Ann Lyons Cantley
Our loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend, Bobbie Ann Lyons Cantley journeyed home to be with the Good Lord and her mother, Joyce Ann Lyons (1993), Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, following a long illness.
Bobbie was a current resident of Daniels where she lived a long and very happy life. She was a blessing to all and a friend to many. In her time here, she enjoyed fishing, camping, spending time with her family and most of all being a loving mother and grandmother not only to her two children and her grandbabies, also to her newest prized possession her cat, Onyx.
Those left to cherish her memory are her father, Bob E. Lyons and his wife, Barbara, of Beckley; her four sisters, Terrie Ellen Lyons of Daniels, Kathie Anita Lyons and her two daughters, son, and grandchildren of Beckley, Tammie Annette Chapman, her husband, Mark, and two children of Shady Spring, Debbie Elaine Lilly her husband, William, their daughter, and grandchildren of Ghent. Also left to cherish her memory are her two sons and their families Michael Ray Cantley and his wife, Annette Coley, their children, Autumn Nevaeh Cantley, Stephan Michael Sipes and his fiancee (Tally) Julia Natalia Parrazal, Matthew Robert Sipes and Felicia Grace Sipes, also her great-grandchild, Natalie Annette Sipes of Concord, N.C.; her other surviving son, Anthony Lloyd Cantley, and his son, Shane Anthony Cantley of Scarbro. She also left behind many great-nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers will be Carl Lester, Steve Cantley, Stephen Sipes, Matthew Sipes, William Lilly, Mark Chapman, Brian Lyons and Justin Chapman.
She will be laid to rest today, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at E.L. Philips Cemetery on Blue Jay Six Road in Cool Ridge at 2 p.m. Graveside rites will be by the Rev. Tom Ellison. There will be no visitation. Friends and family are invited to gather after the burial at the Chapman Shelter on Cherry Creek Circle Road, directly after.

Clyde B. Cousin, 85, of Lanark, passed away on Sept. 25, 2008, at the Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Jackie L. Fitzwater
QUINWOOD — Jackie L. Fitzwater, 72, of Quinwood, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, in Charlottesville, Va., following a long illness.
Born April 25, 1936, in Red Oak, Webster County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Mahone B. and Glenda Mae Skidmore Fitzwater.
He worked for 41 years as a miner, and was a member of the UMWA and a Mason. He was a spec-4 in the U.S. National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Fitzwater of Quinwood; two daughters, Vanessa Pardue and husband, Eddie, of Boomer, N.C., and Jennifer Quillen and husband, Darrell, of Leslie; a foster sister, Dinah Rhodes and husband, Chuck, of Dawson; a brother, Donald Fitzwater of Barboursville; four grandchildren, Jackie McDorman of Flat Top, Shalyn Smith of Cool Ridge, Seth Avis of Boomer, N.C., and Jeremy Quillen of Leslie; and five great-grandchildren, Christopher Collier, Logan McDorman, Cole Smith, Zack Smith, and Serenity Avis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Pastor David Moore and Pastor Roger Thornton officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.
Friends may call from 12 (noon) until 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at the funeral home. There will be no evening visitation.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Quillen Jr., Jeremy Quillen, Eddie Pardue, Seth Avis, Darrell Copen, and Duane Fitzwater.

RAINELLE — John Edward Fitzwater, 70, of Rainelle, passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at his home following a long illness.
There will be a private graveside service.

Philip K. Gartin
Philip K. Gartin, 62, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Division after a long illness.
Born May 5, 1946, he was a son of the late Myrtle and Everette Gartin.
Phil was also preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Earl and Louise Hudson.
He was a retired state trooper, 22 years, and also a retired guard at the Sumper County Prison in Florida.
He leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Lisa Hudson Gartin, and a special dog, Max, two cats, Prissy and Cody; three daughters, Tammy, Sandy and Dawn; three brothers, Doug, Curtis and Ron; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and sister and brother-in-law.
He will be forever loved and cherished.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Racine Baptist Church at Racine with Pastor Pete Scott officiating.
Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the church.

James Linzie Lilly
STOKESDALE, N.C. — James Linzie Lilly, age 65, of Stokesdale, N.C., formerly of Besoco, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at his home in Stokesdale.
Born Aug. 26, 1943, he was the son of the late Henry P. and Gladys M. Woods Lilly.
James enjoyed hunting and fishing and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Pete, Sonny, Lonzie, and Johnny; one brother-in-law; and one sister-in-law.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mary Lilly of Stokesdale, N.C.; three children, James Gary Lilly and wife Cheryl, Mary Lynn Gills and husband Mathew, all of Walnut Cove, N.C., and Thomas Henry Lilly and wife Tina of Stokesdale, N.C.; six grandchildren, Krystle, Courtney, John, Tess, Tiffany and Tracy; great-granddaughter, Keira; five sisters, Mary Meadows of Columbus, Ohio, Polly Lester and husband Jimmy of Huntington, Dottie Gilkerson and husband Harvey of Wayne, Norma Lilly of So-phia, and Zelphia Gilkerson and husband Melvin of Wayne; and one sister-in-law, Rita Lilly of Rhodell.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Rev. Orville Setliff and Rev. Donald Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the Hannah-Lilly Cemetery, Odd.
Arlie Wilson, Kenny Lilly John Lilly, Tim Lilly, Mick Lilly, Allen Meadows, Tommy Wilson, and Don Kelly will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the funeral home.

Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade
Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, a tireless advocate for senior citizen rights and founder of National Grandparents Day, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, Sept. 26, 2008, at Hilltop Center, Hilltop. She was 91 years old.
Services will be on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. David Sneed and Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.
Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Her family also asks that in honor of Marian McQuade’s work on behalf of the elderly, please pass on family histories to grandchildren, visit with the elderly or volunteer at a local nursing home. Michelle Louise Lilly Miller of Jasper Lane, Soak Creek, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at her home. She was 40 years of age.

Hershel Lee Mitchem Sr.
ROCKVIEW — Hershel Lee Mitchem Sr., 80, of Rockview, passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, in Raleigh General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1927, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Stewart and Izorah Hawks Mitchem.
Mr. Mitchem was of the Christian faith. He attended many churches in the area. He enjoyed fishing and carpentry. Mr. Mitchem loved being around his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Robert Moore.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Priddy-Mitchem of the residence; two sons, Hershel Lawson “Tony” Wray and his wife, Marilyn, of Union City, Ind., and Hershel Lee Mitchem II and his wife, Nichole, of King, N.C.; two daughters, Melissa Lee Mitchem Gallutia and her husband, Scott, of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Elizabeth Bilita Banbber and husband Paul of Baltimore, Md.; five stepchildren, Dennis Moore and his wife, Carolyn, of North Carolina, Carlotta Shaw of North Carolina, Linda Ballard of Fort Recovery, Ohio, Sootie Hudson and her husband, Mark, of Washington and Greg Moore and his wife, Bonnie, of Florida; 28 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Hershel’s life will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with Bishop F.D. Vaught officiating. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the funeral home.

Mabel L. Snuffer
Mabel L. Snuffer, age 79, of Lester, passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital.
Born Jan. 24, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Beulah Cooper Birchfield.
Mabel was formerly employed at Slab Fork Coal Company and the Lester Post Office. She was a member of the Glen White Missionary Baptist Church. She was a very loving and giving person who always thought of others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Ray” Snuffer; and one sister, Evelyn McMillen.
Those left to cherish her memory include one brother, Fred Birchfield and wife Judy of Hurricane, W.Va.; one sister, Jewell Light and husband Ken of Marion, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Anna Lee Fraley.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Kenneth Parent officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may gather with the family two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers, Karen Birchfield, Carol Cook, Carol Martin, Carol Fraley, and Betty Saunders.
