LOGAN — Kleta Allen, 62, of Logan, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at Nighbert Memorial United Methodist Church.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — Franklin C. Blake, 58, of Elizabethtown, a native of Beckley, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008.
A graveside service will be noon Friday at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Ky.
Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today and will continue after 9 a.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home.

Hallie Marie Bland
LEWISBURG — Hallie Marie Bland, 77, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness.
Born Aug. 19, 1931, at Sistersville, she was the daughter of the late Harrell and Marie Richardson Coffman.
Mrs. Bland had been a lifelong resident of the Ronceverte area, member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, Lewisburg Lioness, homemaker and retired from the Greenbrier Manor at Fairlea.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pat E. Bland Sr.; and a son, Pat E. Bland Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Harrell Bland of Lewisburg, Richard Bland of Fairbanks, Alaska, Kevin Bland and wife, Jennifer, of State College, Pa.; two sisters, Nellie Tuckwiller of Asbury and Sarah Morris of Ronceverte; two brothers, Richard Coffman of Lewisburg and John Coffman of Ronceverte and grandchild, Geoffrey P. Bland of State College, Pa.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with the Rev. Joseph Kenaston and the Rev. Jeffrey Kanode officiating. Burial will follow in the Coffman Cemetery, Coffman Cemetery Road, Lewisburg.

Sylvia Bradford Bone
Sylvia Bradford Bone, born Sept. 2, 1910, who lived most of her life at Dry Creek of Raleigh County, passed into the arms of the Lord on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at the age of 97 years and 361 days.
She was the daughter of William “Bill Pap” Bradford and Rebecca Jane “Aunt Dane” Clay Bradford.
She was raised on a farm, plowed fields with a horse and plow along with her many sisters. She continued doing farm work, raising vegetables and apples and doing home canning. She made apple butter outside and carried on the traditions of her farm life. She was a Christian all of her life, as she remembers. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dry Creek.
She and her late husband, Sidney Albert Bone, a timber man and coal miner, raised a family together on Dry Creek, where most of her relatives resided. She received her eight-year education in a one-room school house, “The Muddy Lynn,” at the forks of Dry Creek. She loved her family and maintained a Christian home.
Among her hobbies were raising and caring for her collection of growing house flowers. She was a very spiritual person, enjoyed church, learned sewing and quilting there and recited Bible verses. To the delight of others, she was known for reciting the alphabet backwards as fast as most say it forward.
As a widow, she continued to raise two boys, Bill and Lloyd, who alternated taking care of her in her elder years. She had a gentle way about her and yet had a profound effect on many who knew her. She was especially blessed with a long life, as did her mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney, in 1957; her parents, William (1944) and Jane Bradford (1964); her brothers, Billy and Joe; a half brother, Bob; her sisters, Ada, Carrie, Icie, Sarah; and half sisters, Jessie, Rusha, Annie, Clara, Lilly and Dora; Sylvia’s daughter, Artie Price; and Sylvia’s sons, Philip Glen, Marvin Albert and Lloyd Wayne Bone.
She is survived by her sister, Naomi Carver of Johnson City, Tenn.; her son, William David Bone and his wife, Marsha, and daughter, Katilyn, all of Elkview-Pinch, W.Va.; her daughter, Shirley May Burnside and her husband, Bill, of Beverly Hills, Fla.; Sylvia’s living grandchildren, Allen, Deloris, Diane, Dwatta, Jerry “Gary,” Kaitlyn, Kenneth, Philip, Ruth, Sharon, Vincent and Wanda; 29 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Marsh Fork Presbyterian Church at Dry Creek, with the clergy David Pettry, CLP, officiating. Burial will follow in the Cooper Cemetery at Dry Creek.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville.
Pallbearers will be Del Ray Alderman, Danny Alderman, Danny Cantley, Timmy Cantley, Jerry “Gary” Bone and Vincent Burnside.

Belinda Sue Legg Ferrell
RUSSELLVILLE — Belinda Sue Legg Ferrell, 53, of Russellville, was called home to be with the Lord on Sept. 1, 2008, following a long illness.
Born May 24, 1955, in Nicholas County, she was a daughter of Laddie and Lorena Legg of Russellville.
She was the loving wife of Roger “Dennis” Ferrell Sr. for 36 wonderful years. She is also survived by a daughter, Lisa Ferrell-Kesterson and husband, Larry, of Mount Nebo; two sons, R.D. Ferrell and wife, April, of Saturday Road, Jeremy Ferrell and wife, Gina, of Layland; five beautiful grandchildren, Garrett, Gracie, Grant, Grayson and Griffin … Nanny’s precious G-Babies; two brothers, Charles Bryant and wife, Debbie, of Lookout, Clyde Legg and wife, Lynnette, of Saturday Road, two sisters; Pam Pollock and husband, John, of Jetersville, Va., Glenna Legg of Ansted; along with numerous family members and friends.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and “Nanny,” a seamstress, a homemaker and a member of Russellville Baptist Church. She will be sadly missed.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Shir-ley Hellms officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor.

John Arnold Grevillius Sr., 84, of Asbury and Alderson, W.Va., passed away, Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Heartland of Rainelle, Rainelle, W.Va.

Marshall Andrew ‘Andy’ Grogg
Marshall Andrew “Andy” Grogg, 54, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va., due to complications after surgery.
Andy was born Jan. 30, 1954, in Charleston, W.Va., to Gwen and Kenneth Grogg.
He was a graduate of Mullens High School, Potomac State College and Glenville State College. He was longtime educator and football coach. He had taught most recently in Kanawha and Greenbrier counties. He was currently serving as an assistant football coach under his brother, Wyoming East head coach Kevin Grogg. Andy had a love for football and he enjoyed coaching his son, Thad. His family was his life.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Virgil and Ernestine Grogg; and maternal grandparents, Ray and Freda Griffith.
Surviving the family members are parents, Gwen and Kenneth of Beckley; wife, LeeAnn of Lewisburg; children, Ashley and Thad of Charleston, Liza of Lewisburg; stepson, Thaxton Peyatte of Lewisburg; brother, Kevin (Becky) of Mullens; niece, Mallory Green of Mullens; nephew, Justin of Beckley; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Service will be noon Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Adeb Khalil officiating, with an eulogy by Byron Dean. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.
Friends may call 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until time of the service Friday.
Pallbearers will be his close personal friends.

Leona Hodge Hall
RICHMOND, Va. — Leona Hodge Hall, 79, formerly of Beaverdam, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Hall; mother and father, Elbert and Nina Williams Hodge; and a brother, Emerson Hodge.
She is survived by a son, Gregory Alan Hall; two brothers, Glenn and Richard Hodge; and four sisters, Orzuida Hodge Hurd, Sylvia Rosenshine, Cloteile Belveal and Doris Miller; and her loving pet, Manny.
Mrs. Hall retired as a secretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture after 31 years of service.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Nelsen Funeral Homes Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va., where a service will be 7 p.m. today.

Mary Ellen Maddy Hill
LINDSIDE — Mary Ellen Maddy Hill of Coulter’s Chapel near Lindside, Monroe County, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the age of 97 years, eight months and 14days. Except for a brief residence in Wadsworth, Ohio, she was a lifelong resident of Monroe County, living within six miles of her birthplace at Greenville.
She was a homemaker and member of the former Coulter’s Chapel and current Lindside United Methodist Churches. She was active in the Adult Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, AARP, and did voluntary work at the Springfield Care Center for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Maude Broyles Maddy and Luther Richard Maddy; as well as her five siblings, Eula Hazel, William Richard, John Christopher, George Skaggs Maddy and an unnamed infant brother. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Hill, in November 1985, after a marriage of 57 years; son-in-law, Charles H. Aliff; and grandchildren, Dorothy Jean Hill Shafer and Gary Wayne Hill.
She is survived by her four children, including Glen R. Hill and wife, Katherine Pence Hill, of Lindside, Rebecca R. Hill Aliff of Salem, Va., William J. Hill of Greenbelt, Md., and Martha A. Hill, of Roseville, Minn. She is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with the Rev. Carl W. Mouser officiating. Entombment will follow at Birchlawn Abby Mausoleum, Pearisburg, Va., with Denny Carter, Dustin Carter, J.D. Harvey, Heath Hill, Jarrod Hill and Sam Shires serving as pallbearers.

Charles Everett Miller Jr.
GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — Charles Everett Miller Jr., 84, of Gallipolis, formerly of South Charleston, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Arbors of Gallipolis after a long illness.
Charlie was a World War II veteran, serving in General George Patton’s Third Army. He was a machine gun sergeant, surviving many battles, including the historic Battle of the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for bravery. After his military service, he returned home to his wife and new baby and began a long career as a foreman at FMC Corporation. He was the commander of the World War II 87th Infantry 50th anniversary reunion. Charlie was the founder of Little Creek Park in South Charleston and served on the building committee for Lakewood Church of God. He was a member of South Charleston Lodge No. 168 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and Beni Kedem Temple, Charleston. His world flags that were donated to Bob Anderson line the South Charleston Memorial Ice Rink at Southridge.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Miller Sr.; mother, Orpha Miller; daughter, Brenda Arlden; and son, Charles E. Miller III.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean A. Miller; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Carl Speck; sisters, Betty Gay Legg and Beaulah Smith; grandchildren, Melissa and Stan McDaniel, Tamra, Tucker, Curtis and Karen Wilson; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A service to honor the life of Charles E. Miller Jr. will be 1 p.m. Friday at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with the Rev. Gary Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
Family and friends will visit 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

FAIRLEA — Angela Rose “Ki Ki” Ott, 40, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness.
Born Aug. 28, 1968, at Hinton, she was the daughter of Hobert and Anna Rose Thompson Adkins of Meadow Creek.
Mrs. Ott had been a resident of Fairlea for two years and was formerly of Meadow Creek, attended the ARP Church of Fairlea and was an accountant for Gail Mason.
Survivors include her parents; her husband, Daniel Page Ott II of Fairlea; a brother, Jay Adkins and wife, Pam, of Huntington; nieces and nephews, Will and Delaney Adkins of Huntington, Jared and Ella Ott of Kernersville, N.C., Suzanne and Elaine Roggenkamp of Indianola, Neb., Mackenzie and Justin Hylton of Fairlea.

Bobby Pate
Bobby Ray Pate, 66, of Beckley died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in a Hill Top Care Center following an extended short illness.
Born Jan. 26, 1942, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Lacy and Ann Mae Hunt Pate.
Mr. Pate was a self-employed carpenter and of the Baptist faith. Prior to his declining health, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to flee markets.
Survivors include his daughter, Crystal Meininger and husband, James, of Beckley; his grandson, Christopher; two sisters, Wanda Williams and husband, Anthony, of Midway and Jean Moneypenny and husband, Lane, of Jane Lew; stepdaughters, Lena Smith and her children, Chad and Erica, and Mary Burleson and her children, Ashton and Jonathan; two step-great-grandchildren, Ethan and Tyler Smith; nephews, Ryan and Nicholas Williams; and nieces, Pat Foley, Norma Blevins and Diana Miser. In addition, he was survived by a host of friends.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Melvin Jamison officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Margaret Bazzie Shamblin
Margaret Bazzie Shamblin, 95, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Beckley ARH following a short illness.
Born May 15, 1913, at Pineville, she was the eldest daughter of the late Laura Cooper Bazzie and Camillo Bazzie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Shamblin; six brothers, John, Ernest, Amigero, Everett, Carl and Gene Bazzie; and a sister, Mae Sunderland.
Those left to cherish her memory include a brother, Howard Bazzie of Princeton; three sisters, Ann Johnson of Piney View, Catherine Brandi of Long Island, N.Y., Vestal Cavanaugh of Orange, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
At the early age of 16, Margaret unselfishly devoted her life to raising her younger brothers and sisters taking turns with her sister, Mae going to school to complete her education and graduated from Pineville High School. She also unselfishly took in four young nieces and nephews for 2 1/2 years while her sister-in-law was hospitalized with TB. Margaret had no children of her own, but fully accepted responsibilities and loved and cared for all of them as if they were her own.
Margaret married her husband, Leonard and they resided in Benton Harbor, Mich. She worked in an office supply store and returned to WV in 1976. Mrs. Shamblin was a homemaker and also worked for the Raleigh County Public Library for several years. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Piney View Baptist Church.
She was loved by many and will be sadly missed by all.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2008 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Cecil Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.
Joe Adams, Dick Hansen, Douglas Brandi, Buddy Bazzie, Tommy Bazzie and Tony Bazzie will be serving as pallbearers.

Jonathan Andrew Thompson
Cherished Son, Beloved Brother, Outstanding Uncle, Faithful Friend … mere words cannot describe the impact this man’s life had on those fortunate enough to know and love him.
Jonathan Andrew Thompson, known to family and close friends as “Johnny”, 22 of Charleston and Ghent, W.Va., passed peacefully at home Sunday, August 31, 2008.
Born March 5, 1986 in Beckley, W.Va., he was the son of Pat and Patricia Thompson. Johnny was born with a single ventricle heart and faced many obstacles during his childhood and into adolescence. Despite the restrictions his condition caused, his childhood was one of many wonderful memories. The most memorable experiences were with his three older brothers, who kept his life “eventful” ... to say the least!
On October 28, 2001, at the age of 15, he received a long awaited heart transplant. Within days a remarkable transformation took place and Jonathan now had a new lease on life! Jonathan has been and will continue to be an inspiration to all those who have experienced the pleasure of knowing and loving him.
He graduated from Riverside High School in 2004. Jonathan went on to attend West Virginia University of Montgomery as a Civil Engineering major. He recently completed an internship with the Department of Transportation and had plans to begin a career there upon graduation. A career as a civil engineer was only second to his hopes of being invited to join the Professional Golf Association.
Jonathan enjoyed many outdoor activities: hunting, fishing, kayaking, and four-wheeling. He had a special love for his car as most young men of his age do. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family; he especially looked forward to annual hunting and fishing trips with his dad and brothers.
He is predeceased by his grandparents, John and Dixie Thompson of Ghent and Ove Andersen of Lakewood, N.J.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Thompson of Shady Spring, W.Va.; father, Pat Thompson and his wife Kelli of Charleston; grandparents, Rita Andersen of Lakewood, N.J., Margaret Ashworth of Beckley, Dan and Mary Ratliff of Charleston brothers, Patrick Thompson of White Oak, Christopher Thompson and his wife Amy of Belle, Joshua Thompson and his wife Amanda of Midway; sisters, Jacqueline and Amanda Guy of Beckley, and Haileah Light of Charleston; nieces, Morgan Lester, Rhianna Ratliff and Lillian Thompson; nephews, Addison Thompson, Tyler Lester and Robert Hurd; and special friends, Doctors William Neil, Larry Rhoades, and Barbara Gus of Morgantown; Dr. Timothy Hoffman of Columbus, Ohio.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2008, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden with the Rev. John McDonough officiating and the committal service will be held 3 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Jonathan’s family and friends will gather for the visitation one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Revelle Moore Tyus
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — On Tuesday, September 2, 2008, Mrs. Revelle Moore Tyus of E. Chicago, Ind., formerly of Beckley, W.Va., answered the call of her heavenly father.
Born February 14, 1935 in Slab Fork, W.Va. to the late Charlie and Ethel Strickland Moore, she was a graduate of Stratton High School.
Revelle retired from St. Catherine’s Hospital after many years of service. She was a member in good standing at St. Mark’s AME Church, E. Chicago, IN.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Tyus; one brother, Samuel Moore and two sisters, Vergie Manning and Helen Moore.

Anna Lee Ubeda
Anna Lee Ubeda, age 89, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in Lake Placid, Fla., following an extended illness.
Born July 13, 1919, at Rush Run, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Vince L. and Hallie Snuffer Shumate.
Mrs. Ubeda was a member of First Christian Church in Beckley. She was a great cook and homemaker who was always dedicated to her family and friends. She enjoyed her lifelong hobby of scrapbooking and photographically recording each family member’s life. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Ubeda Jr. in 2002; grandson, Frankie Lee Ubeda Jr.; sisters, Mary Rose Parsons, Eloise Broome and her husband, Junior, Helen Slemp and her husband, Tom; brothers, Vince L. Shumate Jr. and his wife, Imogene, William Richard Shumate and his wife, Wilma J.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Frankie Lee Ubeda and his wife, Antje of Lake Placid, Fla.; her daughter, Alegria A. Katona and her husband, Mark of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren, Terri A. Elliott and her husband, Larry of Chesapeake, Va., Darice R. Ubeda of Glendale, Ariz., Karen Ubeda Williams and her husband, Corey of Aurora, Colo., Nicole Ubeda Trimble of Lake Placid, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Terris Ubeda Beckwith of Las Vegas, Nev., Ayla JoAnn Elliott of Chesapeake, Va., Alexis Trimble of Lake Placid, Fla.; great-great-grandchildren, Travis Bryce Beckwith of Las Vegas, Nev.; 20 nieces and nephews, and numerous other family and friends.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, 1901 South Kanawha St., Beckley, with the Rev. Donald R. Snyder officiating.
Visitation will be between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. before the funeral. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum on Harper Road in Beckley.
Active and Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Katona, Larry Elliott, Kevin Elkins, Bill Shumate, Tommy Aguirre, James Vincent Shumate, Darrell Bird, James Lee Broome, Corey Williams and Angelo Gonzalez.

Hazel Anna VanBuren
RONCEVERTE — Hazel Anna VanBuren, 93, of Ronceverte, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea.
Born January 11, 1915, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Ada Anna Mae Carnifix Massie.
She was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte and was a member of the First Church of God in Ronceverte. She had been a Sunday School teacher for many years and had held various offices in the church and women’s group. She was a life member of the Women of the Church of God. She retired from the Greenbrier Manor and previously worked at Mountain State Poultry Plant and Thompson’s Meat Market.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 59 years, Ruben Lawson VanBuren, in 1990; infant daughter, Elreta Mae VanBuren; son, Richard Lewis VanBuren; granddaughters, Karen Sue Handley and Kathy Lynn VanBuren; sisters, Christeen Campbell, Catherine Sams and Mildred Fisher; brothers, Layton, Claude, Milton, James, Robert, Aulbry, Frank and Forest Massie.
Survivors include three sons, Norman (Peggy) VanBuren and Elbert (Barbara) VanBuren of Ronceverte, Marvin (Rita) VanBuren of Lewisburg; three daughters, Anna Gail O’Brien, Elsie Dolores (William) Hoylman and Betty Marie Hoylman all of Ronceverte; daughter-in-law, Connie VanBuren, of Beckley; sister, Leona Brown of Ronceverte; brother, Roy Massie of Ronceverte; 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 5, at the First Church of God in Ronceverte with Rev. Robert Hefner Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. (today) Thursday, September 4, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte.
