WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Sam G. Carman, 80, of Worthington, Ohio, formerly of Beckley, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, after a short illness, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeneanne.

Sam is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Yvonne (David) Pruett of Umatilla, Fla., Pam Weber of Greensboro, N.C., Lou Ann Carman of Columbus, Ohio, J. Kim (Jeanne) Croker of Cardington, Ohio, Greg (Diana) Carman of Grapevine, Texas, and Jeneanne (Wayne) Adkins of Dublin, Ohio; grandchildren, Lisa Pruett, Kelly (Don) Welsh, Joshua (Chavala) Tweedy, David Pruett, Megan (Tom) Filippi, James Lang and Madison Adkins; great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Devin, and Tyler Welsh and Jacob Tweedy; and many nieces and nephews.

He worked 38 years with A&P Tea Company and seven years at Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority. He was past president of the Capital City Sam’s Camping Club and current president of his condo association.

Family and friends called 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St., Worthington, Ohio 43085.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m., Thursday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 614 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley, W.Va. 25801. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, W.Va.

UNION — Billy G. Deaver, 82, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at the Greenbrier Valley Hospital in Ronceverte.

Mr. Deaver was born Nov. 24, 1925, at Huntington, W.Va., the son of the late Clifford E. and Natella Leap Deaver.

Mr. Deaver was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a U.S. Navy Reservist during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired geologist with Exxon and was a former member of the Union Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mona Lou Deaver, of Union; a son, Dan Deaver of Waukesha, WI; a daughter, Marianna Grimm of Gap Mills; two grandchildren, Trista and Trace Deaver; and two stepgrandchildren, Tyler and Travis Willing.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home Chapel in Union, with the Rev. Pamela Eliason officiating.

R. Geraldine Smith Gosney, 74, of Coal City, W.Va., passed away Aug. 28, 2008, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born Jan. 29, 1934, in Coal City, to the late Robert and Rhoda Blevins Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry D. Gosney; a baby daughter, Cara; and sister, Helma Acord.

Survivors include her children, David Bower of Winston-Salem, N.C., Sherry Weidensall of Norfolk, Va., and Tara (Ronald) Gosney-Konieczny of Woodland Park, CO; stepson, Wally Bower of Madison, W.Va.; sisters, Anna Mae Malone of Indiana and Carol Zarycki of Ohio; brother, Harry Smith of Michigan; grandchildren, Shawn Wheeler, Harry and Wayne Bower, Maxine Kelley and her father, Paul Kelley.

Cora Elizabeth Farley Hatfield, 91, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at her home following a long illness.

Born at McCarr, Ky., on Aug. 1, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William Hibbard Farley and Hattie Mae Jenkins Farley.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Truth Assembly Ministries at Midway, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Hatfield; a son, Jerry Michael Hatfield; a daughter, Betty J. Milam; two brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald Hatfield and wife, Nollie, of Kopperston, Hibbard “Hibby” Hatfield and wife, Darlene, of Midway and Dennis J. HINTON — Georgia Grace Young Honaker, 99, of 214 Miller Ave., Hinton, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation at Hilldale following a long illness.

Born Oct. 4, 1908, at Bertha, she was the daughter of the late Walter B. and Ollie Blankenship Young.

Grace was a homemaker and a 65-year member of the Bellepoint Baptist Church in Hinton. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and was a lifelong resident of Summers County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Opie B. Honaker, in 1977; a brother, Guy Young; a sister, Lola Sizemore; and a son-in-law, Bob J. Maddy.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Mae Maddy of Hinton; two granddaughters, Ann Jacobs of Venice, Fla., and Cathy Richmond and husband, Johnnie, of Wayside; four great-grandchildren, Michael Smith, Jennifer Sisson, John Richmond and Allison Leighann Richmond; and two great-great- grandchildren, John and Alexis.

MAXWELTON — Juanita Teel King, 87, passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at her home after a long illness.

Born Feb. 28, 1921, at Concho, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Homer F. and Sadie E. Cobb Teel.

Mrs. King was a lifelong resident of the Lewisburg area, member of the Church of Christ of Lewisburg, a 1938 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Russell King in 1994; and daughter, Katherine Rebecca (Becky) King in 2001.

Survivors include three daughters, Rosemary Daniel and husband, Walter of Fairmont, Susan Wilkerson of Aripeka, Fla. and Linda Zoltowski and husband, John of Westboro, Mass.; two sons, Russell King and wife, Marsha of Lewisburg, and Tommy King of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Marie Shot and Margaret Thomson, both of Beckley; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with the Rev. Eugene Clemons officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg.

Jenny Lee Vass Lyons, age 56, of 707 Maxwell Hill Road, Beckley, WV, died Sunday, August 31, 2008, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a sudden illness.

Born on August 10, 1952 at Beckley, WV, she was the daughter of the late Elsworth M. and Frances L. Bolt Vass of MacArthur, WV.

Mrs. Lyons was a 1970 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a 1971 graduate of the Beckley Beauty School. She was a Baptist and was a member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Mrs. Lyons was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County. Mrs. Lyons was also a member of the Scarlet Royals of The Red Hat Society. Her love of life was spending precious moments with the love of her life, her husband, Larry; her precious love of her littl angel, Brianna; her love for Kimberly and Larry Jr.; and also the love she so desired for her only grandchild, her grandson, Tyler Lyons. She was a homemaker and the last member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Lyons was preceded in death by a brother, Elsworth Jr. in 1944; a sister, Janet Lee Vass Rakes in December 2001; a nephew, Bobby Lee Lane II, February 2007; and her maternal grandmother, Rebecca Jane Sarver Bolt in 1981.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 37 years, Larry; three precious children that she loved with all her heart, two daughters, Brianna Meredith Lyons at home and Kimberly Ann Lyons Thombs and her husband Ronnie of Oak Hill, WV, and a son, Larry Lynn Lyons, Jr. of Beckley, WV; a grandson, Tyler Lyons of Beckley; a nephew, Kevin W. McVey of Los Angeles, Calif.; a niece, Sherry Stables of Princeton, WV; a great niece, Ashley “Nikki” Lane; and four great nephews, Brian and Jeffery Lane, and Christopher and Brandon Stables.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon today, Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Pastor Michael King officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Beckley.

Charles Edward Meadows



Charles Edward Meadows, age 88, of Beckley, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.

Born on Feb. 7, 1920, at Blue Jay, W.Va., he was the son of the late Willie Meadows and Ocie Mae Lilly Meadows.

Mr. Meadows was a retired equipment operator for the City of Beckley with over 20 years of service. He was the former owner and operator of Meadows Construction Co. in the Asphalt business.

Mr. Meadows was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Sprague Freewill Baptist Church. He had made his home in the Beaver and Beckley areas for most of his life and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer and Paul Meadows; by sisters, Loretta Mitchell, Juanita Redden, and Dollie Green.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Annie Stump Meadows; daughters, Wanda Richmond of Birmingham, Ala., Joann Wiggins and husband, Larry of Pell City, Ala., and Sheria Harrington of Daniels; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Ernest Calfee Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Dottie Jean Dunn Miles



MAXWELTON — Dottie Jean (Dunn) Miles died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville on Aug. 29, 2008 from complications of lung cancer and chemotherapy.

She was born on September 11, 1944 in Maxwelton, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late Norman and Mabel Dunn.

She was a retired, dedicated teacher for 30 years in the Greenbrier County School System, spending most of that time as a fourth grade teacher at Frankford Elementary School.

Dottie is survived by her husband, Otis; son, Russell Miles and wife, Lisa of Columbia, Md.; granddaughter Jessica Miles of Columbia, Md.; and brothers, Billy Ray Dunn, Lee Dunn and Jerry Dunn. Dottie’s death leaves a great empty place in the hearts of her family and friends.

She was a lifelong member of Clifton Presbyterian Church as well as a member of the Choir, Women of the Church, and a Sunday School teacher.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at Clifton Presbyterian Church at Maxwelton with Rev. Janice Johnson officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donations of sympathy can be made to the Memorial Fund at Clifton Presbyterian Church.

Ann was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Vernon Gibson; a son, Lucas Paul Gibson in 1989; father, Jack Lee Davis; maternal grandparents, Byrl and Myrl Westfall; and paternal grandparents, Walter and Madelline Davis.

She leaves behind daughters, Mandy Beth Brown and husband, Travis of Florida, and Maggie Ann Gardner and husband, Dan of Charleston; sons, Jacob Anthony Minnich and wife, Tara of Gassaway and Richard Andrew Minnich and Amber Nicole Dyer of Gassaway; mother, Marjorie Westfall Davis of Exchange; sisters, Martha Davis Cook of Charleston, Sandra Davis Gibson of Herold, Jackie Sue Davis Salizar of Beckley; brother, Roland Davis of Exchange; seven grandchildren, Cassidy Rae Brown, Emily Rose Brown, Katie Reese Brown, Heidi Midkiff, Chloe Midkiff, Kurt Minnich and Brayden Minnich.

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — Sally L. Mitchell, 58, of Spotsylvania, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Mitchell was the owner of the antique store Way Back When.

Rev. Clemma Fuson Pugh



On Sunday, August 31, 2008, after a life dedicated to spreading the good news of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, Rev. Clemma Fuson Pugh went to see her Savior, “Face to Face.” She was in her 82nd year.

Born Clemma Mae Lilly at Whitby on Oct. 21, 1925, she was the seventh of 13 children born to the late Everett Jackson and Myrtha Blanche Keffer Lilly. Brothers, Orlan, Osborne, Fred and Dewey Lilly and sisters, Paula Todaro and Kathryn Worley Jarrell also preceded her in death.

Clemma was raised at Coal City, where she attended school until the 8th grade. In 1942 she married Jess Fuson and settled in Eccles. To this union was born her three devoted children, who will forever cherish her memory, Phyllis Camden and her husband, Bob of Beaver, Barbara Fraley and her husband, Bill and Jess Fuson Jr., all of Eccles. Clemma was the beloved grandmother of Rhonda Beheler and her husband, Tim, Renee Lawrence and her husband, Lee, Billy Ray Fraley Jr., Lisa Fuson and Kristy Fuson.

Clemma began ministering in Raleigh County and was licensed to preach by the Church of God of Cleveland, Tenn. in 1952. Her pastorates were at Bolt Church of God from 1954 through 1958 and the Glen White Church of God from 1962 until her retirement in 1990. Rev. Pugh continued to serve the Glen White church as an active member until her passing this past Sunday. Jess her beloved husband and devoted father of her children, was a mainstay in her ministry supporting her in all endeavors. Jess died in August of 1977.

A person who loved life and people, Clemma always led an active life. In 1979, she was blessed to marry a second time to James Pugh of Eccles, a widower with nine children. This union would blend the Fuson and Pugh families of which all would become close friends.

Clemma was the dear step mother of Jim Pugh of Fairdale; Cynthia Bennett and her husband Danny of Eccles; Rev. Randall Pugh and his wife Carol of Fairdale; David Pugh and his wife Faye Ann of Surveyor: Mark Pugh and his wife Tina of Eccles; Greg Pugh of Beckley; Frankie Pugh and his wife Brenda of Chesterfield, Virginia; and Kevin Pugh and his wife Kerri of Beckley. The Pugh and Fuson families would endure the loss of James’s precious son, Johnny in August of 1999. Clemma was the kind step grandmother of Brian Bennett, Beth Lafferty and her husband Steve; Frankie Pugh Jr., and his wife Tiffany; Angie Skulte and her husband Jason; Matt Pugh, Brittany Pugh, Peggy Bissell and her husband Michael; Jarred Pugh, Steven Pugh, Leslie Mikkilineni and her husband Raj; Phillip Pugh; Sydney Pugh, Emma Pugh and Kandace Pugh. James Pugh died in October of 2000.

From these families, thirteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren have been born.

Clemma had a deep fondness for the Lilly family. This past Friday, August 29th, she attended the wedding of her great great niece and had a wonderful visit with her surviving siblings and their extended families. She was the fond sister of Clayton Lilly and his wife Gloria of Ellison Ridge; Paul Lilly and Bob Lilly and his wife Ginny all of Coal City; Norma Meadows of Glen White; Louise Ward and her husband Cecil of Coal City and Emogene White and her husband Earl of Gardendale, Alabama; many nieces and nephews also survive, along with her church family and countless friends.

On Thursday at 1 p.m. we will celebrate Rev. Clemma’s home going at the Glen White Church of God with Rev.’s Jesse A. Farley and Randall Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may call Wednesday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Billy Ray Fraley Jr., River Braswell, Lee Lawrence, Tim Beheler, Jermy and Brandon Sauls.

Virginia Prince Thompson, 86, of Shady Spring, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was born June 28, 1922, in Eccles, and was the daughter of the late Henry and Willa Gunter Godby. She was also preceded in death by a grandson Thomas Andrew Prince and her husbands James A. Prince and Racine O. Thompson.

She was a retired secretary with the United Mine Workers. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and attended the Open Door Church of Shady Spring.

She is survived by two sons: James Raymond Prince of Shady Spring and Paul Randolph Prince of Waynesboro, Va.; four grandchildren: Jimmy Prince of Fairdale, Susan Boggs of Daniels, Danny Prince of Blacksburg, Va. and Ryan Prince of Waynesboro; she also had seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008 in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Beckley.

Friends may call 2 p.m. until time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

The family request that donations of sympathy be made to Gideons International, c/o Mr. A.K. Walker, 517 Orchard Avenue, Beckley, WV 25801.

Mary Sue Vest, age 59, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008.

She was the beloved daughter of the late I.F. and Mabel.

Dear sister of Barbara (Tim) Campbell. Proud aunt of Jason (Marisa) and Neill (Lori) Campbell and great aunt of George, Foster, Spencer and Alice Victoria.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Road (four blocks E of Woodward), Royal Oak, MI 48067.
