Harold Junior Adkins II



HINTON — Harold Junior (Jack) Adkins II, 31, of 305 Maple St., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at his home following a sudden illness.

Born Aug. 13, 1977, in Hinton, he was the son of Harold J. Sr. and Betty Jane Kesner Adkins of Hinton.

Jack was an avid fisherman and loved to play the guitar. Jack was of the Holiness faith and was a lifelong resident of Summers County.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Carl Junior and Croney Ellen Adkins, and his maternal grandparents, William “Bill” and Nina Parker Kesner.

Besides his parents, Jack is survived by six sisters, Carolyn Adkins and companion David Sears of North Carolina, Kathy Harvey of Jumping Branch, Bonnie Cook and companion Gene Lee Mills II of Brooks, and Rebecca Yopp, Jeannie Adkins and Betty Jean Adkins, all of Hinton; two brothers, David Adkins and wife Gayla of Greenville, and Russell Adkins of Hinton; two uncles, three aunts, five nephews, seven nieces, five great-nephews, and two great-nieces also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Rev. Ray Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Adkins Cemetery at Hilltop.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Beverly Ann Bennett, 50, of Beckley, formerly of Bud Mountain, passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008.

Graveside service and burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Morgan Cemetery, Bud Mountain. Friends may call one hour earlier at the cemetery.

Paul Joseph Buckner



OAK HILL — Paul Joseph Buckner, 49, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at C.A.M.C. General Hospital, Charleston.

Born Dec. 19, 1958, at Oak Hill, the son of the late Haymond Buckner and Freda Tucker Buckner.

Paul had worked for the Mizzelle Roofing Company and was of the Holiness faith.

He was preceded in death by brothers, William “Billy” Buckner, Rhondes Withrow, Earl Withrow, and a sister, Connie Slesinki.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Debra Hall of Oak Hill; a son, Paul Jeremiah Buckner; daughters, Ashley Nichole Hall, Jessica Lynn Hall, Brittiany Gail Hall, all of Oak Hill; granddaughter, Aireyona Walton; brothers, Haymond “Jabo” Buckner and wife, Pam, of Powelton, Ray Buckner and wife, Judy, of Niles, Ohio, Mark Buckner and wife, Judy, of Pulaski, Va., and Jimmy Withrow of Charleston; sisters, Dottie McMillion of Oak Hill, Charlotte Fleming of LeHigh Acres, Fla., Diane Snyder and husband, David, of Kincaid, Debbie Buckner of Scarbro, Ella Mae Comer and husband, Charles, of Mount Hope, Carmel Campbell and husband, Roger, of Belle, Gladys Sears and husband, Lester, of Rich Creek, Va., Mildred Joyce Edwards and husband, Roy, of Indiana, and Mary Sue Wolf and husband, Doug, of Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. (today) Friday with the Rev. Jack Long officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family will receive friends from noon until time of the service (today) Friday at the funeral home.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Mr. Anthony W. Callaway, 68, of Hempstead, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at the Carl Burnette Funeral Home Chapel, 456 S. Franklin Ave., Hempstead, NY 11550.

Ruth Marie Adkins Gillian



Ruth Marie Adkins Gillian, 72, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at the SunBridge Pine Lodge Extended Care Center following a long illness.

Emma Jane Hedrick Irons



Emma Jane Hedrick Irons, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at her home in Lewisburg.

Born April 9, 1921, in Sinks Grove, Monroe County, she was the daughter of the late Everette Lee and Ora Loxie Scott Hedrick.

A graduate of Union High School, Mrs. Irons enjoyed working at the Federal Prison Camp in Alderson and many local retail establishments including several antique shops. She was an elder and member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, where she was honored as a lifetime member of the Women of the Church, having served as president. Additionally, she was active in her circle and dedicated much of her time to the development and management of the Americana Thrift Shop. She had served as president of the Valley Trails Garden Club, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a charter member of Chapter V P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Mrs. Irons embraced the challenge of the Great Commission by donating thousands of Bibles to Third World countries through the American Bible Society over the course of 50-plus years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Jackson Irons; her son, Dr. James Edward Irons; a grandson, Jeffrey Glenn Morrison; two brothers, Alvon and Charles Hedrick; and one sister, Lois Harding.

Survivors include her daughter, Wanda Irons Dolan of Lewisburg; her daughter-in-law, Ann Clay Irons of Farmville, Va.; her sister, Ora Lee Hastings of Indianapolis, Ind.; and four grandchildren, James Edward Irons Jr. and wife, Ellen, of Callaway, Va., Dr. Mary Jane Irons of Charlottesville, Va., John Walter Morrison of Lewisburg, and Jennifer Morrison Bias and husband, Rodney, of Winston-Salem, N.C. She was also the proud great-grandma to Ashley Elizabeth Irons and Kristen Michelle Irons of Callaway, Va., and Zachary Hunter Bias, Jacob Brody Bias and Molly Elizabeth Bias of Winston-Salem, N.C. Mrs. Irons is also survived by 16 nieces, seven nephews and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, with Dr. Dexter Taylor and Dr. William C. Hedrick officiating. Burial will precede the memorial service at Rosewood Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Bible Society, c/o Old Stone Presbyterian Church, 200 Church St., Lewisburg, WV 24901.

McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of the arrangements.

DIXIE — Barbara J. Nottingham, 68, of Nicholas County, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge. Burial will be in the Johnston Family Cemetery, Dutch Ridge.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Sunday at the funeral home.

MOUNT HOPE — Doris Lee Shumate Tolliver, 62, of Mount Hope, formerly of Ravencliff, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at the Pine Grove Church, Ravencliff. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until service time at the church. Doris will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
