Robert ‘Bob’ Maxwell
On Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, Robert Lee Maxwell, of Lucas Drive, Beckley, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House, following a short illness. He was 74 years of age.
Known affectionately as “Bob,” Robert was born on Dec. 19, 1933, at Charleston, the son of the late Gertrude Maxwell. Robert was raised by his grandmother, Laura.
He spent his childhood at Walton. A graduate of Walton High School, he excelled in playing basketball. Robert entered the U.S. Navy where he served his country for 19 years. Traveling extensively throughout his naval career, his duty stations were in Maryland, California, Guam, Japan, Kentucky, Virginia, Turkey, England, Scotland, and Florida. He held the rank of Communications Technician Chief upon his retirement. Pursuing a degree at the University of West Florida, and graduating Cum Laude, Robert then began a career with the U.S. Department of Labor as a wage and hour compliance officer, retiring from the Beckley office in 1990.
An avid golfer, Robert was of the Christian faith.
In addition to his family, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Betty Louise Stacher Maxwell, on Dec. 12, 2002.
Robert was the beloved father of Angela Laura Abrahamson and her husband David of Springfield, Va., and James Lee Maxwell and his wife Kim of Clifftop, and the doting grandfather of Ryan, Alex, and Kyle Abrahamson, and Catherine and Edan Maxwell.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 11 a.m., at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Gordon Ross officiating. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, where Robert will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.

Barbara Tolliver
INDIAN CREEK — Barbara Tolliver, 52, of Indian Creek, passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Tolliver family.
Robert B. Weis
LANARK — Robert B. Weis, 50, of Lanark, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 23, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 23, 1958, to Rudell and the late Jack Weis of Piney View.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, camping, and fishing. He took pride in his masonry work before becoming disabled.
Those left to cherish his memories are two daughters, Sheena Weis and Rachel Dove and husband Tommy of Lanark; former wife, Sharon Weis-Champ of Oak Hill; a grandson that he dearly loved, Taylor Dove; a brother, Danny Weis and wife Sherri of Danese; three sisters, Shirley Avis and husband Junior of Danese, Vella Vest and husband Bill of Cool Ridge, and Lois Ewing and husband Dennis of Piney View; a companion of 12 years, Janet Ransom, and daughter, Jaimee O’Neal and husband Mike of Lanark, and their daughter, Jada; six nephews; four nieces; nine great-nephews; seven great-nieces; and numerous friends.
Preceding him in death in addition to his father was a brother, Jack (Budgie) Weis.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at the Stanaford New Beginnings Christian Church, with Pastor Lonnie Greer officiating. Burial will follow at the Weis Family Cemetery in Maplewood.
Friends may gather with the family one hour prior to the service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
