Grant G. Burnside Jr.

Grant G. Burnside Jr., age 61, of Beckley, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the Beckley VA Medical Center, following a long illness.

Born on June 18, 1947, at Clifton Forge, Va., he was the son of Beatrice Spangler Burnside of Craigsville, Va., and the late Grant G. Burnside Sr.

Mr. Burnside was a disabled coal miner and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He had made his home on Curtis Avenue in Beckley for 30 years, and was a member of the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Burnside was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Sue Blackburn Burnside; daughters, Melissa Ann Bassett of Taneytown, Md., and Cathy Lynn Wingrove and husband Randy of Crab Orchard, W.Va.; a sister, Victoria Smiley of Craigsville, Va.; and six grandchildren, Chad Jason Bassett, Kylie Nicole Bassett, Summer Presley Bassett, Shannon Deniese Wingrove, MacKenzie Lynn Wingrove, and Brandy Sue Wingrove.

Committal services and entombment will be held at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity, W.Va., on Tuesday, at 1 p.m., with Chaplain Mark Iobst and Chaplain Robert Wendel officiating.

Friends may call at the mausoleum one hour prior to services.

Military rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.

Eula Clemens

Eula Clemens, 98, of Beckley, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born Jan. 10, 1910, in Pineville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late William and Clementine Ball Calloway.

Mrs. Clemens was an owner/operator of the Beckley Open Air Theater, Stotesbury Theater, and Helen Theater. She was a member of the Beckley Regular Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Women of the Moose, and was a Pink Lady at Raleigh General Hospital. Eula loved caring for her family and she enjoyed playing cards and bingo.

She was preceded in death by a son, Earl Clemens; and a daughter, Florence Candler.

Survivors include a son, Jack Douglas Clemens and wife Helen of Beckley; a daughter, Patty Dacal and husband Woody of Beckley; grandchildren, Linda Baumgartner and husband Ron, Jackie Clemens and wife Patty, Lisa Word and husband Jay, Perry Dacal and wife Vicky, Greg Dacal and wife Trena, Janie Fansler and husband Stan, Johnny, Bobby, and Nancy Candler; and great-grandchildren, Matthew Word, Stephen Word, Tabitha Dacal, Taylor Dacal, Tig Dacal, Hunter Fansler, Kacee Fansler, and Ashley Clemens.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at the United Methodist Temple, with Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to service on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Jack Clemens Jr., Perry Dacal, Greg Dacal, Stan Fansler, Jay Word, Matthew Word, Stephen Word, and David Love. Honorary pallbearers will be Tig Dacal and Hunter Fansler.

Russell Bee Gadd

TRUE — Russell Bee Gadd, 81, of True, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the VA Medical Center in Beckley, following a long illness.

He was born Jan. 25, 1927, at Bertha in Summers County, to the late Noah and Beatrice Gore Gadd.

Russell was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired Tool and Die Maker for Remington Rand Corporation in Marietta, Ohio. He was a former member of the Parkersburg Masonic Lodge and was currently a member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62 A.F. & A.M.

An avid outdoorsman who particularly enjoyed deer hunting and fishing, Russell loved life and, although he was retired, he never quit working. He was of the Baptist Faith and enjoyed gospel music.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Virginia Farley Gadd at home; a daughter, Caroline Powell and husband J.C. of Charleston; a grandson, Talbot Powell of Charleston; three brothers, including his twin, Robert Gadd and wife Ennis of Elgood, Lotus Gadd of Frederick, Md., and Rhodolphus Gadd of Athens; six sisters, Dorothy Epling of Hilldale, Daisy Jones of Beckley, Vada Igo of Charleston, Nadine McClaughlin of Weirton, Zula Patterson of Bluefield, and Anna Faye Werney of Virginia; a special nephew, Jason Epling and wife Shirley of Hilldale; a special friend, Mike Griffith; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Russell’s life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, with Pastor Jim Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens at Princeton.

Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Dorothy Irene Graham

BRADLEY — Dorothy Irene Graham, age 73, of Bradley, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born June 26, 1935, she was the daughter of Garnett Burnett Holliday and the late James Holliday.

Mrs. Graham was a member of the Bradley Baptist Church and was a volunteer at Sherwood Lake. She was also a member of AARP. She was a former employee of Joe Jimpalo Meat Packing, Richmond Laundry, and Beckley Manufacturing and was a homemaker.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Patty Ballard.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 46 years, Bobby G. Graham of Bradley; her mother, Garnett Holliday; two daughters, Rita K. Hess and husband Luke of Bradley and Anita E. Underwood and husband Douglas of Crow; three grandchildren, Tiffany and Nicholas Underwood of Crow, and Luke Hess II of Bradley; three sisters, Carol Martin and husband Toby of Bradley, Betty James and husband Richard of High Point, N.C., and Teresa Windsor and husband Jerry of Bradley; six brothers, Billy Holliday and wife Sue and Tommy Holliday and wife Jane, all of Bradley, Paul Holliday and wife Jane of Virginia, Joe Holliday and wife Marybeth of Virginia, Richard Holliday and wife Lois of Ohio, and Bobby Holliday and wife Ellen of Forest Hill; special camping friends, Ban and Mary Kees; camping friends, Dorothy Wilson, Rossie and Elaine Wilson II and family, Cecil and Patty Wilson and family, Dave and Ann Nelson and family, Raymond and Sherry Rouzee and family, Paul and Judy McNair and family, Ron and Elaine Withrow, and many more.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at 2 p.m., at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Michael Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Lisa Marie Holstein

PACKS BRANCH — Lisa Marie Holstein, age 42, of Packs Branch, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division, following a long illness.

Born on Nov. 25, 1965, at Elyria, Ohio, she was the daughter of Steve L. Holstein and Sharon Williams Holstein of Packs Branch, W.Va.

Lisa was a former retail salesperson, and attended the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church. She is a child of the King. She also had attended Beckley College.

Other than her parents, survivors include her daughter, Kristen Roberts, and her companion, Nicholas Logan, of Mount Hope, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Alyssa Logan; Lisa’s former husband, Craig Roberts of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; brothers, David Holstein and his wife Lisa of Beckley, W.Va., and their children, Zachary, Savannah, Emma Grace, and Ethan Holstein, a special niece and David’s daughter from a previous marriage, Jennifer Leonard and her husband Travis and their son, Cason of Kansas, Steve Franklin Holstein and wife Jill of Wheeling, W.Va., and Jamie Holstein and wife Jennifer of Beckley, W.Va., and their children, Tyler and Austin Holstein, both of Beckley, W.Va.; many uncles, aunts, friends, and extended family; Lisa’s lifelong best friend, Kimberly Menei Ferrell of Chesapeake, W.Va.; and her special friend, Sam Pack of North Carolina.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church at Bradley, W.Va., with Pastor Wayne Peters officiating. Burial will follow at the Dock Lively Cemetery at Long Branch, W.Va.

Friends may call at the church two hours prior to services.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Sheila Elizabeth ‘Pee Wee’ Johnson Hubert

Sheila Elizabeth “Pee Wee” Johnson Hubert, age 62, of Shady Spring, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born Oct. 23, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Effie Basham Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Hubert; three sisters, Ramona Davenport, Leona Carlson, and Shelby O’Connor; brothers, Elwood, Stephen, Glendale Ray, David E., and Monty Dwight Johnson; and an infant brother, Delano Johnson.

Mrs. Hubert was a former employee of Beckett Gas Company and was of the Baptist faith. She was also a volunteer at the VA Hospital in Beckley.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Alan Hubert, and significant other, John Hissett, of Russell Township, Ohio; daughter, Tina Heaton and husband Brian of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren, Shawna, Amber, and Drake Heaton; two sisters, Zivia Powers and Drema Pack and husband Glen; a brother, Gerald Johnson and wife Gale; and her caregivers, Charlene, Robin, and Joe.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at 10 a.m., at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Chaplain Mark Iobst officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Stansbury Morton

QUARRYVILLE, Pa. — Mary Stansbury Morton, 88, died at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Quarryville, on Wednesday, July 9, 2008.

Mary was born in Morgantown on May 8, 1920; she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ada Stansbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Morton and brothers, Harry, Bill, Bud, Bunk and Sam.

She is survived by her brother Jim and her sister Pat and her four sons and her grandchildren: Paul Wailes Morton and his wife Carolee, son Ben and daughter Emily of East Greenwich, R.I.; Charles Stansbury Morton and his wife Sharon, sons Chris and Adam and daughter Elizabeth of Fayetteville and Myrtle Beach S.C.; D. Holmes Morton M.D. and his wife Caroline, daughters Mary and Sarah and son Paul of Strasburg, Pa., and Frank H. Morton and his wife Karen, sons Taj and Kit of Philamouth, Ore.

Mary was a homemaker and a golfer, having won the White Oak Country Club Women’s Championship in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1969 and 1971. Mary participated in the State Women’s Amateur tournament and was Chairman of the Tournament Rules Committee for many years. Mary was an avid watercolor painter and was known for her Chinese renderings which were sold and shown in local art shows around Beckley for many years.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, W.Va., on Aug. 28, 2008. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Morton home, 212 W. Maple Ave. in Fayetteville, following the service. A private burial service will be at the End of the Trail Cemetery at Sam Black Church in Greenbrier County later that same day.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for the loving and wonderful care they gave to our mother the last months of her life.

Delano Ray Pack

Delano Ray Pack, 73, of Beckley, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, following a short illness.

Born June 14, 1935, at Streeter, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ester and Ora Belle Cooper Pack.

He was a retired foreman for the W.Va. Division of Highways, a member of the West Raleigh Baptist Church, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry and Gary Pack.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Eileen Ransom Pack; stepdaughters, Daria Farmer and husband Arlie of North Carolina, Dora Richmond and husband Roger of Shady Spring, and Laverne Jones and husband Jack of Shady Spring; a stepson, Welton Lilly and wife Pat of Shady Spring; sisters, Wanda Adkins and husband Velmer of Norton, Ohio, Helen Black and husband James of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Charlotte Carrow and husband Gary of Litchfield, Ohio; brothers, Phillip “Kenny” Pack and wife Judy of Carslile, Ky., and Stanley Pack and wife Sherrilyn of Milton, Tenn.; 11 stepgrandchildren; and 37 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Cleve Allen and Rev. Delmas Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the John Pack-William Vest Cemetery at Streeter, W.Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Hugh L. Waycaster

BUCKHANNON — Hugh L. Waycaster, 101, of Buckhannon, formerly of Allen Junction, beloved grandfather, teacher, counselor, and best friend, went home to be with his Savior on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 2 a.m., at his granddaughter’s home in Buckhannon where he had resided for the past 14 years. His granddaughters were with him at the time of his passing.

Born April 11, 1907, at Roan Mountain, Tenn., he was the son of the late Isaac and Amanda (Calhoune) Waycaster.

Mr. Waycaster was a retired coal miner, member of U.M.W.A., a devoted Christian, and the patriarch of his family.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dollie Sluder Waycaster; a son, Donald Waycaster; two sisters and four brothers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren, Donna Sue Wilson and her husband Mickey of North Carolina, Mary Ann Walser and her husband Donnie of North Carolina, Naomi Kay Garcia and her husband Pete of Buckhannon, Brenda Waycaster of Allen Junction, Debra Miller and her husband Justin of Covel, Cathy Jett of Allen Junction, and Donald Waycaster Jr. of Pennsylvania; 23 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 12 noon Tuesday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with Rev. J.L. Riffe officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Timothy Hugh Shrewsbury, Lewis Shrewsbury Jr., Eric Garcia, Delano Shrewsbury, David Shrewsbury, and Mark Wilson.
